With nearly all votes counted, Gabriel Boric is elected 36th President of Chile

Turnout was 53%, higher than in the first round and up from the 2017 runoff.

Congrats to Gabriel Boric and to the people of Chile was that great victory ! Now I hope he'll do what he was elected to do, and not become a do-nothing centrist like Michele Bachelet was, or that might be the doom of Chilean left, there are only that many times you break people's hope before they give up on voting completely.

Gabriel has a long time history as a dedicated left-wing activist, so I doubt he would go the way of Michelle Bachelet. Still, three cheers for Gabriel's landslide victory, and hopefully this will finally mark a break with Pinochetism, once and for all.

The BBC has somehow found a Pinochet to ask about the election result in Chile.

Well, it's the third step towards the final break. The final step will come next year when the new Ninth Constitution is voted on.

That's good - but now we have to see if it leads to real action or if it remains a purely symbolic proclamation.

It's not all that difficult actually. I remember reading somewhere that something like 33% of Chileans continue to have positive attitudes towards Pinochet's regime, especially when it comes to Chile's modern economic system.

It might prove a tall order given all the other problems the Salvadoran government has to juggle.

Still, it's quite amazing that they managed to find a blood relative to Pinochet to interview.

I'm low-key glad we avoided the possibility of Bolsonaro 2: Electric Boogaloo. I'm aware of Boric's history, but I've struggled to find proper sources on his platform.
