Manticore is a naval close-in weapon system (CIWS) designed by SDI Armament Systems which is designed to engage high speed, sea skimming anti-ship missiles, aircraft, small surface crafts, helicopters and surface mines. The entire Manticore system has a height of 4.5 meters (7.0 meters including deck penetration) and requires a 5.5 meter diameter working circle of clear deck, 2.5 meters of deck intrusion, 440 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz, and 115 VAC, 60 Hz electrical power from the ship's electrical system, a heading input from the ship's navigation system, and a saltwater coolant line delivering 150 litres per minute at 2.0 bar pressure.

The Manticore CIWS uses an SDI MK 315 cannon, an externally powered rotary cannon with eight rotating barrels which fires 35 x 250 mm cased telescoped (CT) ammunition at a selectable rate of fire of either 4,000 or 8,000 RPM. The gun's eight barrels are each 315 centimeters long and employ an electroplated chromium finish on their interior bore surface to improve their resistance to saltwater corrosion. The entire barrel cluster also includes a barrel brace and a muzzle restraint to increase the barrel stiffness and reduce projectile dispersion. The gun has twelve linkless chambers which are passed between co-located ammunition rammer and receiver sprockets using a series of rollers and cam paths. Both rammer and receiver sprockets are driven by a 100 kW external hydraulic drive motor and rotate at either 500 RPM or 1,000 RPM (for 4,000 or 8,000 RPM fire rates). Rounds enter the gun from the linkless feed system where a rammer actuated by a cam track rams the round into a chamber on the rammer sprocket, ejecting the spent case in the chamber in the process. The ejected case is transferred to a spent casing ejection chute which uses the centrifugual force of the spinning rotor assembly to eject the case out the gun. The chamber with the fresh round is then passed from the ramming sprocket to the receiver sprocket using a set of chamber rollers and cam paths. The receiver sprocket has eight pockets and retains the gun's eight barrels and their respective firing pin assemblies, chamber seals, and support bearings. After being passed to the receiver sprocket each chamber is then rotated by the receiver sprocket into the battery position (approximately 3:00 when looking at the front of the gun) where the a spring loaded firing pin cocked by a wobble plate is dropped and the round fired. Each cavity in the receiver sprocket has both forward and aft seals which upon the chamber pressure from firing expand into cavities locate between the barrel and chamber and chamber and breech.

The 35 x 250 mm cased telescoped ammunition consists of a plastic case 50 mm in diameter and 250 mm in length which contains an aft molded propellant grain, a forward molded grain that houses the 35 mm telescoped projectile, a black powder booster charge, and a primer. The complete AM233 MPDS-T (Missile Piercing Discarding Sabot - Tracer) round intended for use with the gun weighs 1,900 grams and and contains a 550 gram projectile and 525 grams of single base IM propellant. The round is designed for a chamber pressure of 4,500 bar and develops a muzzle velocity of 1,500 m/s. The 550 gram projectile consisting of a 340 gram depleted uranium (DU) alloy sub-caliber penetrator surrounded by a discarding nylon sabot which with a a muzzle velocity of 1,500 m/s can penetrate 110 mm of RHA at a distance of 1,500 meters.

Manticore has both a Ku band (13.4-14 GHz) MTI search radar and a Ku band (15.7-17.7 GHz) pulse-doppler fire control radar. The Ku band moving target indication (MTI) mode search radar consists of a four-plate back-to-back solid-state antenna assembly that rotates at 90 revolutions per minute and continuously searches from the horizon up to the vertical and provides detection, identification, and prioritization of incoming targets. The search radar begins tracking targets at range of 20 kilometers and uses high range resolution (HRR) automatic target recognition (ATR) to identify threats using an onboard library of target signatures which are then prioritized using a programmable threat logic algorithm which determines whether or not to engage a target and the priority of engagement. The system is nominally designed to ignore outbound targets and to only engage targets within a certain pre-programmed minimum and maximum speed limit.

The fire control system will prioritize the first six inbound threats it sees and hand them over to the fire control radar at range of around 10 kilometers and will then begin to engage them at a range of 3 to 4 kilometers. When the system makes a decision to engage a target the 2D target track from the search radar is then handed over to the the fire control radar which tracks the target and opens fire when the target is within range. After opening fire the fire control radar will track both the target and the the outgoing stream and projectiles and using a closed loop tracking algorithm will adjust the gun's electric drives to steer the projectile stream onto the target. The system will keep firing until the target disappears from the radar or if there is an abrupt change in target speed and direction indicating a target breakup. Once a target has been deemed successfully engaged the system will move onto the next priority target or will cease firing and enter standby mode where the system will continue searching for threats.

For engaging surface targets including small surface craft and mines the Manticore is also equipped with an electro-optical sensor suite containing a thermal imager, television camera, and laser rangefinder. The electro-optical suite consists of a 1280 x 1024 pixel midwave IR (3–5 µm) thermal imager with 0.92° to 30.0°horizontal field-of-view and 30x continuous optical zoom, 1920 x 1080 pixel CCD daylight television camera with 64x continuous optical zoom, and an Nd:YAG OPO-shifted 1.54 μm eye-safe laser rangefinder with 50 m to 40 km range and <1 meter accuracy. The electro-optical system features automatic tracking of up to four simultaneous targets, automatic sector surveillance, simultaneous TV and IR tracking and sensor fusion, and recording capability.
