What you aren’t understanding is that it didn’t make economic sense to drag to colonies that where halfway across the world to fight a nation that had no overseas colonies to gain.

Using those standards it wouldn't have made economic sense for the UK to join the fight.

Yes they were. Colonies didn't have control over whether or not they could join a war or not. They could control how much they contribute however and there was absolutely zero point in getting directly involved considering that the Colony of NSW was young penal colony and the Cape Colony was only recently obtained and had a number of internal disputes within it with very few British denizens. Had an American ship tried entering their ports however the colonies would have been obligated to fight it and attempt to capture or sink it. Which isn't entirely unreasonable given that the USS Essex was prowling the Pacific targeting British whaling and merchant vessels until it was defeated off the coast of Chile.

I actually really like ballot initiatives. In the *general* sense (some exceptions of course) it looks like when the public gets to vote on a particular issue instead of a particular candidate, they usually make the right decision.

Why ? Usually a lower age (in western societies at least) is meant to accept the reality that teenagers can get pregnant. By allowing marriage you also allow the teen parents to legally act as parents for the offspring.
