LU, YFA NO LONGER ON SPEAKING TERMS
STRATENBERG, MYTANIJA -- After an explosive row between manager Lu Jialan and the Yue Football Association, the manager and the FA are reportedly "no longer on speaking terms". This revelation, coming on the eve of the 38th Copa Rushmori, has not seemed to impact Lu's status as Dragons manager. However, what has been described as a "thermonuclear" conflict threatens to upend the progress that Yuezhou has made under the ex-Beian City manager, and greater turmoil may be on the horizon if the discord affects the team's performance.
After being hired to replace Yuan Zilai in the middle of WC87 qualifying, Lu has overseen a meteoric rise up the rankings. While he has been unable to win a knockout match in two tries against Cassadaigua and Græntfjall, he managed to steer the team towards a historic first qualification for WC88, before leading the lowest-ranked team in the World Cup to four unlikely points against Turori and Farfadillis. His novel 3-4-2-1 system, once far away from the tactical mainstream in Yuezhou, has allowed the likes of Liu Huiying and Li Jing to flourish. Yet although he is generally liked by his players despite his frosty demeanor, he's butted heads with the FA since his arrival.
The most recent conflict appears to have stemmed from the FA's decision to send an entirely Rushmori-based team to Mytanija, which Lu vehemently disagreed with behind the scenes. While Lu was reportedly willing to accept a less-than-full-strength side despite his desire to win a major trophy with his nation, he strongly preferred a team with more youth, including the likes of Wan Sheping and Li Jianguo. Instead, he was given an all-Rushmori side that he reportedly viewed as a "useless political stunt" by a government still trying to redeem themselves to Rushmori eyes.
Lu was also scandalized by the YFA's active recruitment of Kang Guilin, then manager of Græntfjall, at a low point during WC88 qualifying. Lu felt disrespected by the FA's pursuit of Kang, and believed this too to be a political act (Kang being the longtime manager of Nangang Royals). Lu reportedly threatened to walk before Yuezhou's qualifying playoff against Abanhfleft, before ultimately deciding to stay and lead the team to the World Cup (a large qualification bonus reportedly didn't hurt). But while it wasn't enough to force him out, it was enough to significantly fray the relationship between him and the FA, which has apparently only gotten worse since.
Lu is unlikely to walk during the Copa Rushmori, as he reportedly still wants a chance at glory with a group of players that he deeply respects. Additionally, the YFA, aware of how tenuous their position is, and knowing that the players mostly back the manager over a deeply controversial FA, are unlikely to dismiss him so close to a major tournament. Still, at a moment when Yue footballing hopes are higher than they've ever been, the wedge driven between the administrators and the manager threatens to revert all the progress that Lu has made.
