While tavan is a species rather than a racial category, tavans do not divide themselves into ethnic groups. This is not a part of their mindset, and they are baffled by the human distinction between races. A human with dark black skin and a human with hopelessly pale skin are both viewed as humans, and they would hardly think to classify them otherwise if not told the difference by a human.

The primary reason for this is because tavans are quite objectively minded beings and do not like any degree of subjectivity to be recognized. Hence classifying black and white as separate races would leave one wondering why hair color was not equally a factor, and why a man an inch taller than his brother should not be classified as his own race, too.

However, tavans are an ancient race and do have many physical differences, perhaps more extreme than in humans. These include
--eye color ranging from red to white to yellow to pink
--height ranging from three to five feet
--scale color in any shade of green, and some even have grey, brown, blue, or black skin
--scale rings in any color imaginable, however some unhelpful combinations like brown and blue do not exist
--demi color ranging from white to yellow to gray to black.

These factors, especially scale color, tend to be based on habitat, and because most of Tava is forest, most tavans are a shade of green. However some tribes live near oceans or mountains or cliffs or deserts, and while this makes up only a tiny percentage of the population, they do exist.
