Also, being gay isn't some fancy club with "fuck someone of the same sex" as the entry requirement. It's not something you join, it's something you are.

I feel like the reason for this is the history of how America treated the LGBT community before they were publicly accepted by the majority. The growth of social media has allowed LGBT people to communicate with each other without sharing their identity, making it much easier to find acceptance without risking exposing themselves to their local society. I can confirm this from experience, although I don't like to associate myself with the LGBT community because of how the majority of them act.

Yes, many counties had criminal laws against it back in the day. Police would waste their time going after gay bars, etc. a few decades ago.
