As Saasd walked into the room, he gave off the Mountainese Kamarsh vibe and one glanced at him made them think of him as strict and militaristic but if you learned more about him, he became more than just a Bala Mantrean. "Hi there everyone." He said in his deep voice. "Im here to bring my existence to life as ambassador from Bala Mantre."

At the appointed hour Sansa stood in the small, packed meeting room.

She ignored everyone: smiling lawyers and bankers tried to be good old boys, under the impression that they were important, by trying to catch her eye; and, much to her amusement, every attending baron and duke nodded absentmindedly, eyes moving up and down like broken clocks every few seconds or so. In spite of the concentrated wealth outside, there were no ornate gilded paintings or obvious signs of wealth other than the quarterly reports on her desk. No purple and white cape was to be worn inside, except for her own. There were no royal decorations, no tailor-made suits, no ceremonial swords, no Vitra Skape chairs. The sun now shone serenely bright through the large, beautiful stained glass windows. Sansa folded her arms behind her back and drew herself to her best height.

Saasd made his way into the room.

The room drew quiet and all heads turned to Sansa. “After hearing the reports of your Excellency’s wonderful arrival,” she said to the ambassador, “I am so pleased to finally meet you. I am Sansa Lovebright.”

The Queen slowly walked towards him. Once in front of him, she smiled and said, “Come, sir, let us sit down, relax, and talk about some of the anticipated trade and investment in Bala Mantre—a mighty empire, rich in gold, yes?”

They saw the ferocity of a soldier in him. He continued, "I was 7 years old when a man who came to Kamarsh my town saw me, pointed and said, "You are in the military now." I enjoyed it but then lost my leg during the War of the Angels in the Battle of Salas. I may have lost it but I managed to capture 9 machine gun nests and destroy 17 without a left leg." He then looked back at them in silence.

Elisabeth had no idea what the Queen would say to Saasd. She was confident in the Queen’s ability to convince him. The Nineteen Countries was a peaceful country that wanted only to engage in trade with other countries and invest in their economies. For Yohannesians in general, common sense neutrality was a key element of national identity. Elisabeth remembered the good times she had with her mother. Before Mother would say good night, she’d always read Elisabeth her bedtime stories. Mother also pestered her with so many confusing questions about the wealth of their country and the importance of a very boring thing called neutrality that, in the end, Elisabeth would tell her to stop.

Elisabeth noticed all the sycophantic lawyers still outside. Her two minders were still answering their questions. She was about to tell an approaching fat banker that she was busy when, as if by chance, Felix showed her an important notification message from the Chancellor. He said, “Nacrad’s incoming ambassador will arrive next week.”

The 37th Christian Democratic Executive Council first started bilateral diplomacy with your government to focus on long-standing agreements between our countries such as cultural exchanges, embassies and trade agreements.

Completion of this talk was time sensitive and there were contentious elements concerning key cultural and political differences which were inevitable and understandable in light of the different economic backgrounds, geopolitical situations, and history between Nacrad and Yohannes. Our negotiators also tried to advance the interests of our respective governments that could potentially limit the breadth and depth of our agreements, so as to avoid violating existing bilateral and multilateral commitments.

In spite of all these hurdles, my Executive Council is pleased with the results achieved from our extensive discussions with your government. We have, furthermore, observed the admirable standard of organisation and statesmanship displayed by your representatives. The talk was completed on schedule with, I believe, a fruitful ending.

I would be happy to recommend your diplomatic and consular corps and hereby express my confidence in the diplomatic practice of your government. The President of the Electoral College has requested me to inform you of her cordial and friendly greetings and her best wishes for the well-being of your country and its people. Sansa sat down. She found Saasd interesting, yet in a somewhat guarded way.

Seeing Princess Elisabeth quietly entering the room, Sansa finally opened her folder and gave the ambassador a copy of Parliament’s translation of the bilateral trade report. “Sir,” she began. “What would your Excellency think were I to say that Yohannesian investors have expressed their interest in the Mantrean gold mining industry, and in return, the Yohannesian Government will facilitate the transportation of foreign labour from the Orient to Bala Mantre?”

As the Drudge Desstant approached the diplomatic building, he paused a moment to take in the architecture. A minor hobby of his, Nations architecture, always brought him peace and calm. He kept repeating to himself, Rt Hon Annabelle Thorndon-Stevensonn Chancellor of the Nineteen Countries. When it came time to nock on the ornate door, he was taken aback to the moment he was selected to be a Drudge to other nations, and how scared he was at that time. Finally resolute in his determination to make this work, he knocked.

He paused for any rebuttal. "Lutvikkia wants to enter into this mutual exchange with open arms." He again paused. I see by the terms of agreement you have lowered the tariffs, we thank you. In the interests of mutual exchange, I am authorized to offer absent tariffs. That is to say no tariffs for the first two years. We find that our exports and mutual aid in times of need, provide us with adequate profit to exist." He inclined his upper body to indicate a bow of acceptance. " Further, we are in acceptance of your stepped decline of tariffs to our nation, we will enjoy the symbiotic nature of the exchange."

" And now to your exports, It is under the exchange of ideals and goods that Lutvikkia will purchase any surplus items of a non military nature to supplement your many industry's. Also, in exchange with the permission of your nation, Lutvikkia will send on a regular basis, our populace to the many cities to barter, purchase, and shop with the retail locations, as needed, or seen fit." He turned a Paige of the agreement. "And to that end, Lutvikkia would like to establish a common nature regular flight of civilian aircraft to shuttle said passengers to Yohannes. And will be willing to reciprocate aircraft from Yohannes in return." With the agreement rustling in his hands, he flips several pages. "Ah, yes upon entering into this agreement out aircraft will utilize your aircraft maintenance facilities and purchase fuel, at four dollars above cost, to show mutual faith in this agreement, to last for the first two years, where upon that end the cost will revert to Yohannes standard cost."

"And now to military aid and assistance, with regard to combat assets. Lutvikkia does not enter into military actions, unless lives of innocents are being threatened or lost. However, times may arise when Yohannes will be in need of additional military might for a special cause. In such times Lutvikkia will back Yohannes where and when possible, provided it does not conflict with other Lutvikkian assets or nations. In such cases Lutvikkia will provide non aggression aid, consisting of non combatant removal of peoples from pending combat zones, with medical aid and supplies relief given to all sides." He looked up from his papers to examine the room, and the people there. "We must be clear on these military points, as in the past Lutvikkia has been drawn into conflicts that nearly cost friends and lives. My friends, let us not sign too hastily these documents without fully exploring the benefits and drawbacks in doing so. Also, these negotiations I have here are but a first step in a long line of revisions to a truly mutual symbiotic existence. I thank you for your time in these matters."

It was a rainy day when Princess Elisabeth visited the new construction site.

She went a few days before summer solstice, one week after the embassy application by the Diseran government. It had not taken long for the City Council to know the importance of her building consent application. Disera’s incoming ambassador, Livia Lunaris, would visit the new site on behalf of her country’s government next week. A federation located in Northwestern Verusa, Disera would be the latest trade partner of Yohannes, after the Chuck. Elisabeth knew the importance of making a good first impression.

The first steel skeleton framework had finally been erected this morning. The project engineer, Shaheen Al Haddad, had brought with him his first group of construction workers, twenty of them laughing at each other’s jokes just now; two site managers, smoking next to their cars; and an old land surveyor, Bob, with whom she had a nice conversation with just yesterday. They were waiting for her outside the entrance gate to the site. Elisabeth was happy: they turned up on time, unlike most tradies and their bosses these days.

She got out of her car and shut the door. Not bringing her umbrella was a big mistake. Elisabeth could see that the rain would only get harder, and she was starting to get soaked. The construction site was as spacious as building inspectors could manage. The City Council normally would not have approved it this soon, but in this case they did approve it—building consents and permits, Diplomatic Protection Service privileges, and health and safety at work compliance, all within a single week. A normal ratepayer would normally need to wait for a whole month, Elisabeth smiled. Not her though.

“Greetings,” she said, using her most polite and soft tone. “Mr Al Haddad, I hope everything goes as planned?”

Shaheen examined his waterproof drawing plan for a moment before answering curtly. “Your Royal Highness, yes.”

Elisabeth studied him. Shaheen was a highly intelligent and upright Mohammedan, which was a pleasing thing to see. Many populist politicians in Yohannes liked to promote ill-feeling against recent migrants; and that was why she’d not voted for Marion Maréchal-Le Men in 2018. She disliked racism in all its forms. Shaheen’s reply was curt, but he was probably just nervous, Elisabeth thought. “I have seen your amazing work in Gorskia, Mr Al Haddad, and I look forward to seeing you do the same, here.”

Bob had stood by close enough to be able to hear their conversation, and together with the now smiling two site managers, he was eager to join in.

He said, “Back in my day, your Grace, the King would not stand here—with us, tradesmen!”

Elisabeth laughed softly. “Well, there’s a reason the Daily Mail and Women’s Weekly call me the ‘People’s Princess’?”

“Perhaps there is,” said Bob. “Your Grace, I would not want to hold up the construction boys—they are waiting for me over there. An embassy plan will need to be presented to some foreign ambassador next week, after all. Her name, ambassador Olivia? Livia, yes.”

Elisabeth chuckled softly.

“How many political officers will be here,” said Shaheen. “Housed, serving in almost every type of position for the embassy?”

“Well, Mr Al Haddad, from the information I’ve just received, somewhere around twenty: the ambassador herself, three diplomats, four secretaries, three chancellors and their assistants, two visa officers, four public receptionists, two armed protection officers, and one chauffeur to take care of the ambassador’s limousine.”

One of the two site managers spoke up. “Quite a well-paid bunch, aye?” He looked at his construction men, and they laughed with him. “When are we getting our pay rise, Princess?”

Bob rolled his eyes in disbelief. Elisabeth laughed softly. “Well, if you vote for Forest and the Environment in the next general election, sir, you will have your pay rise!”

Until this moment she had maintained her neutrality to the public—to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters, as Father would say—but why couldn’t she do a little bit of politics? Young people were often overlooked by mainstream political candidates. Why not promote the Green Party: the party for young people like herself? The future of our community and the future of our country, Elisabeth thought. The media would have a field day. She could already imagine tomorrow’s news headlines. The thought made her smile. The Princess Diaries: Duchess of East Lindblum to campaign for the Greens on election day!

Shaheen said, “Well, we better get to work, now.” He took a step towards her and bowed. “Your Royal Highness, thank you for the surprise visit.”

Bob smiled. Elisabeth looked at the Mohammedan with mild amusement. “Please, sir,” she said softly. “We don’t bow in this country—well, only to the Emperor, who is elected by the people.”

She looked at the assembled men and paused for a moment, but finally, she decided to say, “As the Bible would say, ‘We are all equal in the sight of God Almighty.’”

Queen Sansa knew the trade bill would be voted on tonight.

Elisabeth had shown her the letter from the Nacradian Embassy. Sansa was sure that if she did not intervene now, the GOP would simply go ahead with their own draft text. They would not want to compromise with the Greens—whom they disliked terribly—nor would they risk angering their loyal voter base by refusing to water down the bill. The opportunistic Marion and her Yohannes First Party would normally refuse to support their coalition partner on the first reading of an important trade bill like this. Sansa knew what that meant: this was her only opportunity to influence the outcome of the reading, and nothing would stand in her way.

She was invited to read her submission before the select committee herself. Oral submission by a very important person was a rare thing to see. Usually it was because the submission would deal with sensitive subject matters—such as her embarrassing defeat here last year—and might need an expert’s opinion on estimates of appropriations. Today she was going to invite a senior professor of political economy from the University of Yohannes, if possible. The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Consular Relations between Nacrad and Yohannes would be proposed, to help support important Nacradian business in Yohannes and vice versa.

Sansa sat waiting for the chairman to finish saying his prayers, barely understanding the Old High German words used, trying to formulate her opening statement; then Victor mentioned her name and called on her to issue her ministerial statement submission.

“We aim to eliminate existing tariffs on more than half of this country’s current exports to Nacrad,” Sansa began. “By 2022, this could potentially shave off approximately two hundred million dollars—in annual duty saving—for struggling machinery exporters in Yohannes.” She rose from her seat.

“Who will act as our official export credit agency in Nacrad next year?” Victor asked.

“The Bank of Yohannes will act as our official export credit agency in Nacrad—that is, through its export finance facilities, the bank will support this country’s exports in Nacrad, to provide a range of trade credit insurance and financial guarantees, to give our small and medium-sized exporters more control; and to help them improve cash flow, reducing risks commonly faced by businesses involved in international trade.”

The entire Hiramian delegation was already here, but somehow Margaret seemed to be the Chief Negotiator, despite her short tenure as an ambassador. Margaret had received permission from her government to speak on behalf of Hiramian exporters in Yohannes. Yesterday, she had called Elisabeth’s assistant, Felix, to say she would be a little bit late this morning.

Elisabeth was hoping that Margaret would agree to look at the current investment treaty between Hiramia-Okfew and Yohannes. It was not that she wanted a better deal for Yohannes—in fact, the treaty had eliminated tariffs on at least sixty per cent of Yohannes’ exports to Hiramia, and had levelled the playing field for her country’s electrical machinery exporters. The establishment of a formal agreement at the turn of the century had stimulated trade growth with Hiramia: her country’s two-way trade with Hiramia had more than doubled over the decade, proving that it had helped Yohannesian exporters succeed in the thriving Hiramian market. But the treaty had not helped small and medium-sized enterprises. It was partly because the Christian Democratic Party was a party for big business, which was a shame considering that its confidence-and-supply partner, Forest and the Environment, was a less pro-business party. But, more importantly, she knew in her heart—there was no better time than now to renegotiate the treaty. Ambassador Alexandria shook Elisabeth's hands, and this was the same for the rest of both delegations. Alexandria seemed a little depressed; her daughter just died of a car wreck. She tried to hide that fact, for now, it wasn't essential to the treaty or the convention.

Once the delegations were in the meeting table, Alexandria looked at the treaty and thought about how Yohannes was screwing over it's smaller businesses. She asked Elisabeth the following: "This treaty shouldn't cause issues to the many small businesses in both of our countries. It should have some kind of even playing field for all companies to work with. What do you think about the treaty?".

Margaret was a small business fan, believing in an even playing field for small businesses and big businesses, and she'd grown up in the Okfew portion of Hiramia-Okfew, which is more rural and has more small businesses and farms. The government of Hiram Land gave her the ambassadorship before she was elected as the ambassador for the entire Commonwealth of Hiramia-Okfew simply because they thought she could defend small business and because they thought Yohannes was going to uphold that sentiment.

Head of Mission's background (optional): Born in Sala, she has a Law Degree and a Diploma in Psychology from Carthage University. Diploma in International Studies from the Diplomatic School. She entered the Diplomatic Career in October 1986.
In the Mediterranean region, she held various advisory and coordination responsibilities in matters of Aliens, Asylum and Immigration as Deputy Assistant Director General for Justice and Home Affairs and Assistant Director General for International Legal Cooperation at the Ministry of Justice.
She recently provided support to the D.G of Diplomatic Information and Media at the head of the coordination of Public Diplomacy.
