Situation in Adunis deteriorates as Al-Aboud declares martial-law.

Image
The self-declared President has found himself in an increasing volatile scenario in the capital.
Adunis, Adunis Province - The President-Premier has found himself in an increasingly hostile environment, sources close to the government have said. Recent anti-government demonstrations across Adunis turned violent, particularly around Synagoges and Mosques. Police, who were deployed by the government in an attempt to "oversee the peaceful democratic right to protest" began to engage and brawl protesters near the Grand Assembly.

This has prompted the President-Premier, in an address to a mostly empty House of Representatives, to use his executive authority to declare the city of Adunis under a state of martial law. "Remember your curfews. Do not be out by 18:00pm. This is for your own safety. The city must be wrestled back from those who would seek to undermine the authority of this house and the nation."

Protests have entered their seventh day in Adunis. Originally beginning as a reaction to Al-Aboud's consolidation of his political power through his constitutionally ambiguous self-declaration as President, the protests soon turned into support for Nazim al-Qutayni. al-Qutayni was recently declared a criminal and terrorist sympathiser by the government, issuing an arrest warrant for him on Friday.

However, counter-protesters riled up by the warnings issued by Imam Salah. Salah, a radical and closely associated with the political leanings of Al-Aboud's wing of the National Irfanic Party. These counter-protesters disrupted numerous demonstrations, prompting an increase in violence from the anti-government protests. Calamity and confusion broke out in the Tughluq-Kahlon square. The police began breaking up the fights, yet numerous sources on the ground, viral videos and tweets seemed to be implying that several detachments of police officers and riot police proceeded to fight amongst themselves.

Speculation has arisen that the infighting amidst policing groups might be correlated to split loyalties. Nazim al-Qutayni was polled amongst the police-forces as a "popular", "understanding" and "dedicated" champion of their causes. The engagements may have arisen out of a sense of loyalty to the man who they are now legally hunting down for crimes.

More than 18,000 policemen and women are expected to be deployed to Adunis tonight, with an unspecified amount of military personnel. Al-Aboud has threatened the use of force if "demonstrators do not comply with the curfew." Projections indicate a limited number of troop movements, with individuals living in and around Qaa giving reports and testimony of 'heavy fighting' in the area.

Following the news of the declaration of martial law, Le Fédéraliste understands that all members of the APP wrote a joint open-letter to Al-Aboud, resigning their positions as Representatives and "no longer recognising the authority of the Grand Assembly and its leader." Members of the Party for Irfanic Democracy have done the same, yet supposedly independently of the orders of Nazim al-Qutayni whose location is currently unknown.

Three federal agencies abolished by government in single day
The Federal Office for Miruvian Project Investment, Federal Office for Combatting Discrimination and Racism and the Federal Office for Parenthood scrapped.

Federal Minister for Finance, Leandro Laezza has announced that the government will be shutting down three prominent agencies in line with its “financial reordering” of the federal government. The three bodies to be closed are the Federal Office for Miruvian Project Investment, the Federal Office for Combatting Discrimination and Racism and the Federal Office for Parenthood. The move has been denounced by the opposition parties as a “major and sudden blitzkrieg against rights and liberties.”
Image
Foreign Minister Galizia claimed Zorasan seeks to undermine Sotirian Euclea.

In a press conference in Poveglia, Finance Minister Laezza explained, “these three bodies to be dissolved later this month have not only consistently been proven to be deeply inefficient, they have also proved to be a significant waste of resources in terms of talent and experience.” He further said, “these bodies not only wasted money and manpower, but they have been a constant reminder of the leftist excesses since the return of democracy.”

The three bodies combined have a total budget of $3.3 billion, which the government has earmarked for its “Assegni Familiari” program which seeks to give each Etrurian family with one child earning below $15,000 a year, a monthly payment of $500, families with two children and earning below $15,000 can expected to receive $650 a month.

The Federal Office for Miruvian Project Investment consumes the most money, with an annual budget of $2.1 billion. The FOMP was established in 2001 by President Vinko Begovic to “promote and support Miruvian small-businesses, social and community projects.” The FOMP has been under constant criticism and attack by the Tribune Movement since 2012, who have described it as a “criminal racket” and “corruption machine.” Last year, President Francesco Carcaterra attacked the body for “wasting money on politically correct vanity projects.” The dissolution of the FOMP was attacked by the Etrurian-Miruvian Association as “yet more vicious proof of the Tribune Movement’s Vespasian-centric obsessions and racism.”

The Miroslav Stepanovic Foundation, a leading partner of FOMP also criticised the decision saying, “the grounds for closing down FOMP are weak, the Tribune government would better serve itself by being honest, that this is driven by racism and a rejection of the Miruvian community as citizens and members of Etrurian society.”

However, the FOPM has been regularly caught up in corruption scandals since its creation. Two years ago, it was found to have “serious faults in its vetting of projects”, after it was discovered to have funded six community projects that were found to be fronts for Miruvian organised crime.

FOMP’s responsibilities will be transferred to the Federal Ministry for Infrastructure and National Development.

The second body to be dissolved is the Federal Office for Combatting Discrimination and Racism. Established in 2006 by President Urbano Onoforio, it was charged with formulating federal laws and policies aimed at stamping out institutional racism and discrimination. In 2011, President Emiliano Reali extended its mandate to coordinate federal and state governments in working toward equality for LGBT+ and ethnic minorities.
Finance Minister Laezza was less detailed on this point, but defended the decision saying, “when the federal government wishes to focus much of its spending on developing the nation and expanding incomes and standards of living, throwing money into vanity or leftist politically-correct institutions is not appropriate.”

The closure of the Federal Office for Parenthood, a body set up in 1989 to assist women in deciding matters of parenthood, but since evolved to provide emotional and financial support for those seeking abortion services, has sparked the most intense criticism.

The Citizens’ Alliance has described the closure as the “first step of the coming attack on women’s control over their own bodies.” While, Democratic Alternative has called a “move worthy of the obscene past.”
However, Finance Minister Laezza said, “this is an area best suited for health authorities at the local and state levels. Federal involvement is overbearing and wasteful. Any questions of this decision being related to the Government’s position on abortion is irrelevant.”

The Finance Minister’s response has been widely attacked by liberal and leftist parties, with Democratic Alternative describing his words as “a blatant hollow lie.”

He further defended himself when questioned by journalists saying, “I am the Finance minister, matters like these belong to ministries of the social kind. What this government seeks is a budget surplus so that we can invest in the Etrurian people, and not, the wasteful, self-serving projects that enriched the elite. We are serving the people not the likes of you.”

The Serafina Ravelli Foundation, Etruria’s largest lobby group for women attacked the move saying, “the loss of the FOP is a devastating attack on female rights and independence. Ever since 2018, the Tribunes have proved that they have been lying over abortion. We wish to assure them, that we will fight for abortion rights to the bitter end. We cannot return the dangers and ruthlessness of pre-1984 Etruria.”

In 1984, the first democratic government since the military dictatorship legalised abortion across all three states. However, many have criticised successive governments for not enshrining the right in the constitution, which would provide it the necessary “protection.”

However, the decision to abolish the FOP has been applauded across Etruria, with numerous Tribunes celebrating the government’s decision. Vice President Vitoria Vasari said, “I am so happy that the federal office for abortion is gone. Never is it appropriate for the central government to wade into such things.”

Archbishop Renato Schiaparelli, the highest ranking Etrurian clergyman told reporters, “this is the step in the right direction for those of the pro-life disposition. Life must be protected and removing a state-funded means to do otherwise is a good thing.”

SIMIZU: SARTRE "SHOULD'VE BEEN SUSPENDED LONGER" FOR SALUTES
Senrian coach argues IFF failed to "adequately punish" Gaullican player
for performing Xiaodongese military salute repeatedly during CdM match

Image
Katuo Simizu told reporters that Sartre's suspension was "too short to be real punishment".

October 26, 2019 | by Moriyasu Akibahara | Katuo Simizu, head coach for Senria's national soccer team, has stated that the International Football "did not adequately punish" Gaullican striker Max Sartre for repeatedly making a Great War-era Xiaodongese military salute during a Coupe du Monde match on October 12.

Sartre, whose family is of Xiaodongese origin, performed the salute- infamously used by the soldiers responsible for the Senrian Genocide, in which Xiaodong deliberately exterminated more than 12.5 million people- three times during the match. Sartre refused to apologize for his actions, but Gaullica's coach Roland Varne expressed "distaste" with the action, and the IFF responded by suspending Sartre for the following match, which Gaullica lost.

At the time, the Senrian Football Association responded by saying that it "supported" the suspension, and by stating that "celebratory invocation of war crimes and genocide is utterly unacceptable during a sporting event meant to bring the world together". Reaction among Senrian players and fans was intensely negative during and after the match, with Sartre being repeatedly jeered by fans and confronted briefly by goalkeeper Itirou Matura. After the match, Senrian fans protested by refusing to clean up their sections of the stadium, which many had done in previous matches

In some parts of Senria in the following days, some individuals also reportedly burned Gaullican jerseys or flags in protest. Others called for the Senrian government to charge Sartre with genocide denialism, punishable by a fine of up to ¥1,150,000 ($10,000) or imprisonment ranging from three months to ten years; however, the Senrian Ministry of Justice issued a press release shortly thereafter noting that it did not have jurisdiction over Piraea, where the incident occurred.

"Mr. Sartre says that he performed this salute in 'honor', but there is nothing honorable associated with that salute, and to perform it as a celebration represents a deep ignorance, if not callousness and immorality, on his part," Simizu- speaking in a personal capacity- told reporters. "To revel in the murder of millions of innocents- a wound which remains open for many Senrian families today- as a form of celebration is abhorrent."

"The IFF's decision is made, obviously, but suspension for only a single match does not properly address the severity of Sartre's actions, and it is obvious by his unrepentance that the IFF did not adequately punish him," he continued. "He obviously should've been suspended for longer, for five matches at the minimum, and made to issue an apology."

Simizu's remark has garnered support in Senria. Shortly after the remark was made, team captain Sigeru Watanabe said on Twitter that "all members of the national team who I've talked to agree with Coach Simizu's remarks. Punishment was far too lenient in this case." Other individuals on social media similarly praised Simizu's remark; one Twitter user responded to a tweet by Keisi Sinbun reporting the remarks by saying that the IFF was "delinquent" in letting Sartre off the hook. "It's satisfying that Gaullica's elimination was his fault," another added, "but one match is not enough."

Mainiti Sinbun reached out to the Senrian Football Association for comment; a spokesperson for the SFA responded by saying that "Mr. Simizu made his remarks as a private individual, [and therefore] it is not our position to remark upon them". Neither Sartre, nor the Gaullican soccer federation, nor the IFF have responded as of press time.

Chaos across the country as simultaneous protests against government enter second week.

Image
Individuals have painted themselves in clown or jester make-up, as symbol against the 'Jokers' in government.
Adunis, Adunis Province - Anti-government protests across the country have entered their second week, as pressure mounts on Yayha Al-Aboud to maintain order. The protests began over the President-Premier declaring himself President through a legally uncertain means within the constitution. Planned protests and strikes began on the day, with their continuation and increasing turnout in cities such as Adunis, Qaa, Zahana and others has prompted a police crackdown by the government.

Counter-protests launched by those loyal to the government have seen large-scale civilian-on-civilian violence in numerous urban centres, even as the police tried to set up zones of free protest. Tear gas, batons and even improvised barricades composed of vehicles were used to disperse and direct the crowd at yesterday's rally in Adunis, which saw violence erupt between even police and security forces.

So far, in a gesture he described as respectful to the democratic processes, the President-Premier has dismissed the use of military-grade force, citing that "it hasn't come to that." Many of his critics have decried that Mr. Al-Aboud no longer has control over the military to command them to do his bidding.

Indeed, Mr. Aboud's lack of control over the situation has prompted many of the protesters to adorn themselves in clown masks or white face-paint. The movement is seen to criticise the 'jokers' or 'clowns' in government. Aryeh-Kahlon, who has been participating in the anti-government protests in Adunis, called Aboud a "coward". He would add that "of course he's a clown! He's also a puppet, on strings plucked by radicals, zealots and Zorasan!"

During a televised address to the nation, Al-Aboud decried these brand of protesters as little more than "traitors" with little to no serious demands, merely rioting for the sake of it. He said that these are "people who wanted to watch the world burn."

A video of Nazim al-Qutayni was released online, in which he calls on the protesters to "never give up". He promised that "change was coming" and gave a short laugh, in which he waved it off and expressed that the public "wouldn't understand." His message, in which he calls out Al-Aboud for his "anti-democratic processes" has become a rally-cry and point of hope. Individuals express empathy with Nazim, who is on a government wanted list for 'treason', which many consider to be farcical. It is presumed that the former leader of the PID has fled to a strong PID constituency, such as those in the north of the country.

The infighting seen across protest movements and the general instability they have caused is mirrored almost in the rumours of skirmishes reigniting across the country, split on sectarian and ethnic lines. Several videos that the government has removed due to their 'fearmongering' depicted Atudite units of the army moving through suburbs of Qaa, exchanging fire with a yet unknown enemy. Mr Aboud decried the video as "fake news", explaining its removal as "deterring extremism on the basis of false narratives. Deterring extremism that would have happened because of these videos and movies. Needless extremism, because this isn't happening!"

The protests are expected to continue, as the government has refused to sit down to negotiate. A government spokesperson was rumoured to say that the citizens would need their "incomes soon" and then the crowd should disperse.

A spokesperson for the protesters, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "it wasn't about money. It's about sending a message."

It was announced today by the staff of the Wensley Retirement Home at Nua Taois that Judith Williams died at the age of 107 at 0:35, just a week after celebrating her 107th birthday at the Nua Taois General Hospital from pneumonia. With her death, it also marks the death of the final native speaker of the indigenous Imaguan language, which had been spoken for time immemorial on the islands of Imagua and the Assimas. She outlived her husband, Jack Brown, who died in 1998 at the age of 88, and their only son, Edward Brown, who died in 2001 at the age of 66, and is survived by all three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

The Wensley Retirement Home issued a statement, saying that "she was an active part of our community from when she moved into the Wensley Retirement Home in 1989, and over the years has contributed greatly to the fabric of the home. She will be greatly missed."

The chief of the Native Arucian Association of Imagua and the Assimas, Cecil Dubickas said that Judith Brown had "contributed a lot to the preservation of the indigenous Imaguan language, and helped play a role in ensuring that the Imaguan language can survive in some form today. Thanks to people like her, there are around six hundred people who are learning Imaguan as a second language, and I am confident that the native Imaguan language will one day return to its former glory."

President Edmondo Privitera, upon hearing of the death, ordered that all flags of Imagua and the Assimas be at half-mast, saying that "as the last native speaker of an Imaguan language, Judith Brown has played a pivotal role in ensuring the language's survival, especially after her admission to the Wensley Retirement Home. While there may not be any native speakers of the indigenous Imaguan language anymore, the language has not completely died out yet, and God willing, it will be revived."

A private funeral service is scheduled to take place at Saint Isidore's High Estmerian Church at Nua Taois next Sunday at 1:30 pm, with her surviving family, members of the National Arucian Association of Imagua and the Assimas, and staff and residents at the Wensley Retirement Home being invited to attend the funeral. It will be followed by a public internment in her hometown of Woodhurst, where she will be interred at the Woodhurst Cemetery.

Prime Minister Shuffles Cabinet

Police Minister appointee Stefan Bezuidenhout speaks to media next to Prime Minister Robert Marten.

Prime Minister Robert Marten has given his cabinet a minor reshuffle, bringing two new faces into his cabinet and seeing the departure of Robert van Thys, who was implicated in a coverup involving monitoring arsenic levels in public water bores in Steynland earlier this year.

The Prime Minister said at a conference that the shuffle was primarily about putting some "new blood" in a cabinet that has largely remained unchanged since Marten's election in 2013.
"We've got some very capable ministers," he said. "However we recognise that there is rising talent within the party ranks and therefore it makes sense to bring that talent to the forefront of government."

Questions regarding the departure of former Minister for the Environment, Robert van Thuys, were not answered. However, the Prime Minister did make a short statement on van Thys' demotion from cabinet, saying that he "requested a different role within the government so he can spend more time with family." It is currently not known what that new role in government would be.

Stepping in as replacement for van Thys as Minister for the Environment is Katrina Richardson, who will leave her role as Secretary for Women's Affairs within the Ministry of Social Development to take up this new role as cabinet minister. She will also continue to hold the position of Associate Minister of Health.

Richardson says that she was "excited" about her new portfolio, which will be the first of her political career. The 32 year old, who was once the youngest councilor elected to the General Council at the age of 21 in 2009, said that her decade in the National Council and her roles as associate minister and Secretary for Women's Affairs had prepared her for her role as Minister of the Environment.
"I've been preparing for this role for a good six years," she said. "I think that my hard work as women's secretary has been rewarded."

She said that she would bring a "different vision" for the environment ministry and for Nuvania as a whole. Richardson spent several years during her teens as a volunteer for a local conservation widlife sanctuary near her hometown of Osmaston in northeastern Steynland. She said that she had proposed a plan that would see the government set aside ₲50 million ($6.05 million) per year into a dedicated fund for community environmental groups, among other things. She said that she has the capacity to "make significant and lasting changes" that would benefit all Nuvanians, and felt privileged to be given this role.

The second new face within the Marten government is Stefan Bezuidenhout, who takes over the portfolio of Minister for Police from Steven de Klerk, who resigned from the National Council earlier this week after revealing that he had developed Stage II prostate cancer, and is set to begin treatment next week. Bezuidenhout said that the circumstances involved in his promotion to Cabinet "are very unfortunate" but said he was "privileged to be given such an important portfolio."
"It's very humbling," he said. "I have a lot of work ahead of me as police minister."

Bezuidenhout assumes the portfolio amidst reports that the National Police had been implicated in the 1987 murder of Estmerish journalist Susan Morris, who had been investigating claims of state sanctioned extrajudicial killings by both police officers and an alleged secret special forces unit known as "Task Force 110". There have also been complaints laid to the police ministry from female recruits about bullying and sexual assault within the service. Bezuidenhout said that he would look into the complaints regarding bullying and sexual assault, but did not comment on whether or not an inquiry would take place.

The Prime Minister did not make an announcement for who would replace Katrina Richardson as Secretary for Women's Affairs, stating that it was "too early to decide".

Ousted minister Robert van Thys said that he was "very happy" with his replacement at the Ministry for the Environment, and said that he was familiar with the work done by the wildlife sanctuary near Osmaston. He said he had "every confidence in Richardson".
"I think she'll do a great job," he said. "She's got the experience and the passion to truly make positive change."

van Thys said that he "was not bitter" about being ousted from Cabinet but said that he had requested a lighter workload. He didn't agree with the rumours that it was due to the successful lawsuit against the Ministry of the Environment for inadequate monitoring of arsenic levels in drinking water in Steynland, nor did he believe that accusations of a cover up had resulted in his dismissal.
"I don't think any of those are true," he said. "I was open and honest about what the ministry faced, and what I was being implicated in, and the Prime Minister did not feel that I had let him down in any way." He said that there is a lot of work involved with being a cabinet minister and the lawsuit earlier in the year was "too much" for him to handle.
"My wife had become concerned with the amount of stress and expectations being put on me and so I asked the Prime Minister to put me into a less strenuous role," he said. "It was merely a reassignment."

The two new ministers are expected to start their roles on Thursday this week.

49 MPs to form the "True Way" political movement

Image
Colonel Vahid Namdar MP led the efforts to establish True Way.
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- 49 principilist members of the Popular Council are to form an extra-legislative group according to a statement by Colonel Vahid Namdar MP. The group will be called the True Way and aims to “coalesce like-minded citizens into the patriotic struggle for the defence of the Union from Euclean threats.” The group has reportedly received authorisation from the Constitutional Court despite protests from other MPs.

After months of conjecture and rumour, 49 MPs are to form a “extra-legislative” group dedicated to “uniting the people of Zorasan into one cohesive movement, in the objective of defending the Union.” The new group will seek to attract both politicians and citizens from all sectors of life. The group has reportedly received support from members of the military, clergy and industry according to Colonel Vahid Namdar MP.

The new group’s formation was confirmed at a large-scale event in Zahedan this morning, where Col. Namdar announced the name and aims of the group. In his speech to the other 48 MPs, reporters and possible supporters he said, “this is the day that we take up the sword of security and patriotic defence. Our nation is besieged by the Euclean powers for they fear an Irfanic power on their doorstep.”

He further said, “this new movement will seek the support of all Zorasanis, from the saffron grower to the State President, from the soldier to the First Minister. This movement will seek simply, to unite the people of Zorasan into one cohesive, indivisible front and mass in resistance to the plots and schemes of the Eucleans.”

“The True Way will build the foundations of its movement across union republics and across all communities. The True Way will be found in all four corners of our great Union and by the grace of God, we will bring the nation together and throw back the Eucleans into their morally bankrupt continent” he said further.

The 49 MPs were said to have registered the new group with the Constitutional Court last month, as any political movement requires constitutional review, to determine whether it violates the constitution’s clause on the prohibition of political parties. The Court ruled in favour of True Way on Friday, clearing the way for the group’s establishment.

Earlier reports that members of the cabinet had joined True Way proved incorrect, as no member of the central government were present at the launch event.

Surena Al-Kataeb MP, followed Col. Namdar in addressing the hall. She said, “our country is at a crossroads, we face great challenges within and without. Only through the unification of spirit and mind can our nation overcome the trials set before us and emerge stronger. We are on the cusp of achieving what no Irfanic nation has done for centuries, become a great power, with all the status and responsibilities attached.”

Another key figure, Abdolreza Shamshani MP said, “this movement will be the greatest wave of patriotism and revolutionary dedication since the day Mahrdad Ali Sattari and the great Command Cadre seized control of the Shah’s palace in 1950. We will honour our great founding fathers as rally in defence of our country, and then, we will honour God by building him an Irfanic nation worthy of his blessings.”

No senior figure from the government could be reached for comment, however, a brief statement by the First Minister’s office said, “what members of parliament do outside of the legislature is their business and responsibility.”

However, the announcement was met with criticism by some centrist and reformist MPs who described the group as a “deception.”

Mahmoud Ali MP told Dawn News, “This is clearly an effort by the hardliner nationalists under Namdar to deceive the people and the Constitutional Court into allowing the development of a political movement aimed at undermining the progress made in years.”

A group of six MPs have reportedly written a letter to the Parliamentary Office for Anti-Partisan Affairs decrying the move. The letter which was later posted online said, “when a group of the most ideological members of Parliament meet and form a group that is clearly political, it is fair to say that it violates the Parliament’s rules against factions, societies, clubs and groups. The POAPA must not allow this group to be recognised in house.”

Col. Namdar pre-empted criticism during his speech saying, “when news of our endeavours reaches those who would have Zorasan remain prostrate before Euclea, we expect and are ready for the vitriol. This movement will bring their reckoning, we will educate the people of Zorasan of the dangers that they represent, especially in their pro-Euclean outlooks.”

Within two hours of the launch event, a website the True Way was opened to the public. According to its membership section, it claimed that it had already received 1,000 new members, including seven generals, three admirals, sixty clerics and eighty businesspeople, the remainder being ordinary citizens.

True Way will move to establish local offices in each constituency of the Union according to its website, while also establishing ties to the “media, Kholofah and military, to spread the message of patriotic defence.”
The new group comes as the First Minister is to meet with the State President tomorrow morning to request that he dissolve the Popular Council for an election. The First Minister seeks an election to “ask the people to elect a new parliament, one that works for all citizens in wake of 28 members being expelled for failing in their service to Zorasani democracy.”

BREAKING State President orders general election to be held November 14th

Image
File photo: First Minister Farzad Akbari has secured an election from State President Vahid Isfandiar
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- State President Vahid Isfandiar has accepted First Minister Farzad Akbari’s request for a snap election. The head of state sent a letter to the speaker of the Popular Council ordering him to cease business and close the chamber.

An election is to be held on November 14th. First Minister Akbari requested they dissolution of the Popular Council after 28 reformist MPs were expelled several weeks ago for violating parliamentary rules and ethics and undermining social harmony. He said last week, “it cannot be realistic to hold 28 by-elections when so many have betrayed the people’s trust.”

Although the First Minister secured his election, he initially resisted calls for a poll. Days after 21 were expelled from the lower house, he said, “with the country facing the aftermath of one of the longest water shortages, political uncertainty due to the threats of Estmere’s neo-colonial government and the tragic crisis in Tsabara, it would be inappropriate to distract government with an election.”

However, with a lull in tensions with Estmere and the need for a strong government and Parliament in relation to the deepening crisis in Tsabara, the First Minister appears to have given into the pressure of his cabinet. In his address to the popular council this morning, he told lawmakers, “it has become apparent that with the recent expulsions and the growing security crisis, the nation is in need of a strong government and Parliament.”

He confirmed his intentions saying, “as such I will be officially requesting the dissolving of Parliament and an election from the State President today.”

The Popular Council officially dissolves at midnight tonight and with the next poll originally set for March 2020, many of these seats have their candidates vetted, approved and ready to fight.

However, this election will be unlike any other since 2005, when the so-called Saffron Era, a period of reformist dominance between 1990 and 2005, came to a shocking end. The Isfandiar-Akbari administration’s efforts to further reform the economy, while reconstituting old political traditions, nationalism and public Irfanic virtue has enflamed divisions between their Principilist camp and those on the left of Zorasani politics. The Isfandiar-Akbari administration is already declaring this election the “one that defines Zorasan’s place in the world.”

This election will also likely be wildly different due to the emergence of the True Way movement. Formed officially yesterday by 49 right-wing MPs, led by Colonel Vahid Namdar. The group was swift to issue a statement in wake of the State President’s decision saying, “we will rally and aid all candidates and MPs who seek to defend the Union, serve the people and honour God.”

Due to the lack of political parties in Zorasan, its elections are notoriously short, with many historians and commentators describing a Zorasani general election as a “collective study of 580 races held on the same day.” Each MP represents a single-member constituency and the races take a highly localised and personal nature.

Seven regional governments threaten implementing processes of secession if Al-Aboud does not call elections and step-down.

Image
Aryeh Kahlon, leader of the APP and keen opposition leader to Al-Aboud,
announced he was fully behind the states' declaration.
Savyon, Gederot Province - At an emergency meeting of the Atudite People's Party in Savyon, Gederot, Aryeh Kahlon has announced that seven regional governments have put forward an ultimatum to Yayha Al-Aboud: 'Leave, or we will.'

The emergency summit between the party's leaders was called a day ago and already it seems to have reached a clear consensus. The APP controls 9 of the province legislatures, six of which it holds either in a majority or with a coalition. Two of the remaining three are held in minority governments with supply-and-demand agreements with other parties. Adunis, the third, is constitutionally required to hold an Atudite-Irfanic coalition.

The seven provinces that have threatened secession are: Yeruham (APP-PID), Karmiel (APP), Levahim (APP-E&P), Gederot (APP), Masar (APP), Eilat (APP) and Tzoran (APP). The three remaining provinces, Adunis (APP-NIP), Boukhadra (APP-NU) and Netanya (APP-NU-DE) have announced their "immense opposition" to this plan. Adunis, for obvious reasons of instability - but Boukhadra and Netanya have expressed their concerns of "abandonment" in a secession scenario, decrying it as "divisive and extremist". The local governments of both provinces declared that Kahlon was "betraying the principles of the cosocial state."

Mr. Kahlon told his opponent, Yayha Al-Aboud: "the ball is in your court now. We want you to end this farcical charade. Stop pretending the constitution allows you to do this. It does not. Call an election. Leave your appropriated office. Leave, or we will." He would add that: "You are not the president. You have no mandate. No authority. You brandish your political opponents as terrorists, traitors or betrayers. We give you this one chance to preserve the cosocial union. Look around you as protests erupt across this nation, as you worsen the Sfira situation due to your extremism. Call an election and call it now!"

Whilst the slogan "Leave, or we will." has picked up immense steam on social media and as an anti-government slogan, other opponents of the government have decried Kahlon's tactics as "holding the country to ransom." Nazim al-Qutayni called on Kahlon to "meet with [him]" to "further discuss their shared goals", suggesting that he felt secession would not solve the "issues at the heart of Tsabaran society." The Secular Popular Front, widely regarded as the heirs of the Communalist Regime, have stated that secession would "leave countless poor" on either side.

Supporters of the government have called Kahlon out as a "Eucelan traitor" who wants to "destabilise the region for their interests." Others have concluded that "secession" is not permitted under the Tsabaran union, which describes the state as 'one and indivisible.'

The government has yet to officially respond, but members of the National Irfanic Party have called out the suggestion as "more examples of the traitorous nature of the APP", whilst they applauded the legislatures of Boukhadra and Netanya for rejecting Kahlon's plans. They decried him as a "power-hungry blind man, leading assemblies of the blind."

BREAKING Acting President Yahya Aboud declares martial law and suspends constitution

Image
Acting President Yahya Aboud called for unity against "separatists and terrorists"
Adunis, Adunis Province - In response to the threat of secession seven Atudite-majority provinces, President-Premier Yahya Aboud has declared martial law, suspended the constitution and dissolved the Grand Assembly. Addressing the nation, he said, “it is without question our nation faces its greatest challenge. But by being bold and fearless, we will defeat those traitors in our nation, aided and abetted by those outside it and restore Tsabara to peace.”

Following an emergency cabinet meeting last night, this morning, President-Premier Yahya Aboud decided to take the most drastic action afforded to him by the constitution. In an emotional televised address to the country, he said, “in face of the growing terrorist and traitorous threats, I have decided after much discussion with my cabinet, to officially declare martial law across the entire federation. This will also be supported by the immediate suspension of the constitution and dissolution and closure of the Grand Assembly.”

“The federal government will be suspending all state-level administrations and instituting direct control from Adunis. A national curfew will be put in place and a ban on public demonstrations will be enforced as of midnight tonight” he further said.

“This government, as with any Tsabaran government has a duty to protect and maintain the territorial integrity of the nation, when this is threatened it must take whatever action necessary. If there are those among us who seek to divide and destroy our country, to you I say, beware and ready yourselves. We will unite against you and we will destroy you” he threatened, widely accepted as a threat against the Atudite provincial governments who threatened secession yesterday.

With the constitution suspended, all protected rights and laws on law enforcement and liberty have been made void. The President-Premier explained that, “with the suspension of the constitution, we are granted the means and ways to pursue national enemies and threats and deal with them in a manner benefitting the severity of the crisis we find ourselves in.”

With the Grand Assembly closed the status of political parties stands unknown, however, the acting president hinted in his address that parties "engaged against the government and integrity of the nation, will face swift and decesive action." The government had earlier argued that the Atudite People's Party's threat to secede seven provinces broke constitutional law, making it liable for banning.

The acting president however argued that this move would be temporary, “once the situation is calmed, once those who seek to dismember our country are dealt with, the constitution will be restored, martial law lifted. Only once our country is safe, can the rights and liberties we hold dear be restored.”

The acting president then urged for unity saying, “our country has been tested in the past, the bonds that bind us as Tsabarans have remained strong. Now is the time for our bonds to be renewed in face of separatism, terrorism and foreign interference. We cannot allow the arrogant to break up our country and we cannot allow Euclea to weaken us. May our holy land and holy nation stand united and strong and together, we will overcome.”

The government has since announced that as of midnight tonight, all forms of protest will be banned, and army units will be deployed to clear the streets. A curfew of 7.30pm to 6am will be introduced tomorrow, with violations of curfew being punishable by imprisonment. Suspected members of separatist or terrorist groups will be detained without trial for unlimited period.
We will bring more information as it is received.

Today's Updates: 123 Reformist candidates rejected | First Minister Akbari warns "Zorasan will not stand by as Tsabara is consumed."

Image
First Minister Akbari (2nd-R) at the military event today.

123 Reformist MP candidates rejected by JCPS

Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- A total of 123 reformist candidates for the snap election have been rejected by the Joint Commission for Political Stability. The rejections were swiftly followed by the acceptance of replacement candidates within hours of today’s nomination deadline. The decision was met wide criticism after it was revealed the new candidates are members of the True Way movement. However, the government defended the JCPS’ decision due to its “constitutional duties.”

As the election nears its official beginning tomorrow, over 120 candidates were rejected by the JCPS, mere hours before the nomination deadline. The body claimed that the 123 candidates showed a “lengthy and detailed history of undermining social harmony and indicating concerning views that would jeopardise the political stability of the System.”

However, the JCPS reportedly fast-tracked replacement candidates, all of whom are suspected to be candidates endorsed by the True Way movement.

The Office for Democratic Development, an NGO based in Mazdavand, which studies the vetting of political candidates and offers support and advice for aspiring candidates noted that, “the online list produced by the JCPS and National Electoral Council revealed that all 123 rejected candidates were immediately replaced by candidates, who’s bios indicate either membership of the True Way movement or have been endorsed by it.”

The ODD has claimed that the rejections and replacements indicate a significant plot to stack the federal parliament.

“If looked at broadly, what this appears to be is a major establishment wide effort to stack the parliament with ideologically similar individuals, which overt or close links to the True Way. By removing reformist or liberal-minded candidates, voters will have virtually no choice between differing political positions. By stacking the parliament, the military will have a completely pliant and subservient legislature, while also making a hardline ideological government inevitable” it said in an online statement.

True Way has rejected claims it is involved in a “conspiracy”, in a statement posted on social media it said, “True Way seeks to unite society and the state against the clear and present dangers the nation faces. It seeks to do this through democracy and the popular vote. We offer through candidates a clear agenda; we do not need fixes or ploys to succeed.”

The first opinion poll produced since parliament was dissolved shows those aligned with the principilist caucus lead at 44%, while the Left comes second at 24%, Reformists come at 20% and the Moderate Right comes last at 18%.

First Minister: “We will not stand back and watch Tsabara be consumed”

Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- Addressing military commanders at a memorial for the late General Saeed Hashemi, the first minister warned that the situation in Tsabara was “worsening by the day.” He went on to say that, “a Tsabara becoming consumed by violence, would prove to be a vital security threat to the Union and with it, the stability of the country. We will not stand back and watch Tsabara be consumed.”

“We see the foreign hand in this chaos, and it is hard at work” he said, repeating a common attack that foreign nations are provoking and stirring the unrest in the country.

“We have already deployed 18,000 soldiers to the border to maintain security and integrity of our territory. We cannot and will not allow Atudite terrorism or extremism to enter our country and threaten our Union” he said.

The first minister had earlier met with the State President to discuss the situation in Tsabara, after which the Foreign Ministry repeated its call for “restraint and open, honest and clear dialogue between all sides.”

Two days ago, interim president, Yahya Aboud declared martial law across all Tsabara. He also suspended the constitution, shuttered the Tsabaran parliament, and today banned two prominent rival parties, the Atudite People’s Party and the Party for Irfanic Democracy.

Acting President Aboud justified his actions by citing the threat of secession by seven provinces led by the APP. The crisis has led to a widespread embrace of ethnic nationalisms within Tsabara, which has fuelled the disintegration of the central authority.

The constitutional and secessionist crisis began earlier this year with controversial reforms by the late president, Atwan al-Tughluq being met with resistance by the Atudite population. President al-Tughluq sought to reform the country toward a better balance of power and influence, reflecting demographic changes. Since the return of democracy in 1986, Tsabara has been governed under a Confessionalist system, in which major offices of state are divided between the Atudite, Badawiyan and “Sotirian” populations. However, since 2005 this has been steadily reformed out, enabling the Badawiyan population to rightly assume greater control.

By Spring, Atudite ultra-nationalists began to conduct violent attacks against Badawiyan civilians and a terrorist group, the Lions of the Homeland, led by Elazar-Ben Yair, began attacking the military and government property. The crisis escalated significantly in August when Atudite units of the Federal Army attacked and seized the Sfira army base near the city of Qaa. An estimated 180 soldiers were killed, and the remainder taken hostage. President al-Tughluq successfully secured their release following negotiations. He passed away last month, leaving a power-vacuum taken by his prime minister Yahya Aboud.

In the east and south-east, prominent and popular cleric, Sheik Faizan Salah has emerged as the de-facto leader of the Arta Irfanic-Badawiyan population and a vocal supporter of Aboud. He has since gathered around him a sizeable following, owed to his regularly condemnations of Atudite extremism and his calls for economic equality and development. Sheik Salah has warned that, “if Aboud falls, if our government is destroyed by whoever, know that a reckoning will be unleashed.”

Forces loyal to Nazim al-Qutayni overthrow Aboud.

Image
Nazim al-Qutayni addressed the nation from Adunis,
swearing himself in as interim President as he prepares the country for elections.
Adunis, Adunis Province - Military and police forces loyal to the former Minister of the Interior, Nazim al-Qutayni, have seized Adunis from Yayha al-Aboud and his supporters. What some are calling a coup d'état was reported as troop movements earlier this morning by some civilians, with immense confusion causing some in the city to speculate that Aboud had called in reinforcements to wrestle control of the city.

At around 11:47 this morning, minor skirmishes broke out in the city as riot police clashed with forces loyal to al-Aboud. The police have long be speculated and thought of to have loyalty to the former minister, and several officers were seen storming a military suppression of protesters to the aid of the civilians. Several of the officers were seen with PID insignia on their riot shields or vehicles at this time and one officer in particular said that "Aboud was a corrupt pig with no honour. Al-Qutayni and the PID are the only hope for this country to prosper."

Numerous elements of the army and navy were involved in the coup, with armoured brigades driving down the old city's roads for the first time in over forty years. Despite being supposed forces of liberation, many have expressed online the 'horrors' such imagery displays. One commentator wrote that "look how far the nation has fallen". Others have said that "democracy has died in Tsabara." However, supporters of the PID have said this is the army's right as per "the constitution of Tsabara."

General Elyounoussi, a supporter of Nazim al-Qutayni, who was instrumental in the overthrowing of the Aboud regime this morning, addressed the nation in a televised address: "The Constitution of Tsabara was illegally suspended. It is the duty of the army, the vanguard of democracy in this country, to defend it against tyranny and injustice. We have facilitated a return to democracy in this nation and have reverted it from a tyrannical dictatorial oligarchy of Aboud and his wings of the National Irfanic Party to a representative democracy. We have done our part. This is not a coup. Aboud's government was not legitimate. Now the fate of our nation rests in the hands of the people, as acting-President al-Qutayni prepares the nation for elections. Rejoice; for there is no war in Adunis."

By 13:19 the House of Representatives was stormed by combined elements of the police and the military. 23 members of Aboud's National Irfanic Party were injured whilst resisting arrest whilst the fate of Yayha al-Aboud is currently unknown. He was last heard delivering a live-streamed message across the nation at around 13:30, before a combination of small and large arms fire was heard near his vicinity and the stream was cut off.

Whilst numerous engagements continued in the city, including sieges of several military outposts and police stations, the forces loyal to Nazim and the PID declared 'incontestable victory' at 14:03. By 17:00, the fighting in the city was reported to have ended with many of Aboud's forces either having fled or surrendering under promises of amnesty by Nazim's troops.

Nazim al-Qutayni was declared acting president by the military, in accordance with several aspects of the duties of the 'secular vanguard of democracy' that the military upholds. His temporary inauguration was televised, live-streamed and radio'd across the nation. In it, the former Minister of the Interior called on the nation:

"The tyrant and his usurpers have been deposed. There is no longer a suspension of the constitution. Order shall be restored and the cosocial state shall be saved and upheld. There shall no longer be a suppression of protests or a banning of sensible parties that support the Federation. The APP is absolved of the false sins subscribed to it by Yayha al-Aboud. I call on the APP to no longer talk this threat of secession; there is nothing to gain. The strength of the cosocial state rests in our unity. Brother shall no longer spill the blood of brother under the guise of a tyrant aiming to elevate one ethnicity over the other. I call on the nation to lay down its arms. Our Federation is not under threat from within. It is the radicals in Zorasan who wish to destabilise this nation, who have direct benefit in claiming long lost territory in the south. Rally to the Constitution in this time of crisis. Do not let the temptation of those telling you that the grass is greener taint your perceptions, don't let the hate of the 'villain of a different creed' deter you."

The final line of his address was a call for unity and patriotism, as the nation would "go to the polls in a presidential election in due time."

Protests and insurrections have continued across the country however, especially as forces loyal to the Aboud regime rally to his ousting. Some are burning pictures or straw statues of Nazim, calling him an "Atudite lapdog" whilst several Atudite extremists are criticising him as an "Aboud in the shadows." Some have demanded to see "proof of Aboud's life", claiming he was "killed in a power ploy" as several of his ministers have been arrested themselves. Others fled the capital including the deputy premier and minister of defence, who are suspected to have travelled to Zorasan to form a government in exile. Members of the military loyal to Aboud such as General Dajini have retreated due east, to territories with high Badawiyan population and loyalty to the NIR and the firebrand cleric Salah.

Even with the change in government, many of members of the House of Representatives have yet to return. Representatives from the APP, P&E and numerous other parties have expressed their "immense concern" with the "instability of Adunis". Kahlon has stated that "The APP wont sit unti lwe are assured of the legitimacy of the words of Nazim al-Qutayni." Despite this apparent distrust, it is known that several Atudite units of the Tsabaran Army did assist Nazim's loyalists in ousting Yayha al-Aboud.

BREAKING: The Acting President has confirmed in a late night address that his predecessor was indeed killed. "Mr. Aboud did not comply with the surrender demand put forward by the police and soldiers who took control of this city back from him and is reported to have fired back at the troops with his loyalists. From his body two small pistols were recovered. The soldiers, however, were under explicit orders from all of the hierarchy and Generals present to ensure his survival. Due to their failure, they shall be reprimanded. Mr. Aboud's refusal to surrender was not just cause for his death as we intended on giving him a fair trial in compliance with the constitution."

Hundreds of thousands rally against Interim President Nazim al-Qutayni

Image
Hundreds of thousands rallied in Imam Ardashir Park in the southern city of Hitteen.
Hitteen, Qadessiyya Province - Over 300,000 people took to the streets in Hiteen to condemn last week’s coup which saw the overthrow of the National Irfanic Party and the death of acting president, Yahya Aboud. The protests saw many speakers including major figures in the League of the Righteous, which has sought to coalesce anti-Nazim elements in the east and south. The protests come as Acting President Al-Qutayni formed his emergency government and legalised the Atudite People’s Party.

In scenes that will cause concern within Nazim Al-Qutayni’s emergency government, over 300,000 people took to the streets of Sidi Amar to condemn the military action that led to the overthrow of the National Irfanic Party and acting president Yahya Aboud. The city’s Imam Ardashir Park was overflowing with people who waved anti-Nazim and anti-Atudite banners. Large numbers of people also waved the red-white-black banner of Pan-Irfanism, a widespread trend in the predominately Arta Irfanic east and south, as the banner is widely known as a pro-Zorasan symbol.

The protest was organised by the League of the Righteous, the nation-wide Irfanic civil society group, formed by the controversial populist cleric, Sheik Faizan Salah in 2014. The LR was close to the late president Atwan al-Tughluq and many of its members were also politicians with the National Irfanic Party. President al-Tughluq’s premier and the late Yahya Aboud, was a prominent member of the LR, serving as its Under-Secretary for Beytol Relations between 2014 and 2016.

During the mass protest, numerous LR and NIP figures addressed the crowd, while the protesters chanted, “down with Nazim”, “your demise is our victory” and “Adunis for all Irfani.”

Governor of Qadessiyya, Yousef al-Benyan told the crowds, “the blood of our brothers stains the hands of Nazim and his conspirators. The blood of true believers and the servants of God stain the floors and streets of Adunis. Let those butchers know, they are not our leaders.”

The governors of Ain Djasser, Juraynah and Hassani Abdelkrim were also present on stage. Mahmad Saleh (AD), Muqtada Abdelqadr (JR) and Hussein al-Said (HA) each took turns to condemn the new government in Adunis, with Governor Abdelqadr describing Nazim as a “lover of Atudites and a slave to Euclea.” The three governors alongside Governor al-Benyan announced to the crowds that they would be forming an “emergency regional council” to coordinate their provinces’ official response to the coup.

Other speakers included several NIP senators who fled Adunis in wake of the coup, while General Hadir Salah, the former Minister of Defence and hardline opponent of the Lions appeared for the first time since the coup. General Salah is the highest ranking official to survive the coup and holds significant sway over large parts of the Badawiyan sections of the Federal Armed Forces.

He told the crowd, “what happened in Adunis was a crime and an act of war against the destiny of Tsabara. It was a declaration of war against millions of pious and patriotic Badawiyans. If the Lions started it, Nazim and his cowardly allies have escalated it. Now is the time for us to strike back at our enemies”, drawing loud cheers from the audience.

Adding further concern were unconfirmed reports that the governors of Bedjene and Ain Yagout were among the crowd, if confirmed it would mean that the provincial leaders of six provinces were present an anti-government rally.

The climax of the rally came with a speech by Sheik Faizan Salah himself, in which he said, “our beloved President Atwan Al-Tughluq lays dead, slain by those who slay Sotirias. Now, our beloved Premier lays dead, slain by his and our supposed brothers.”

“The pro-imperialist elements of Tsabara have decimated our leaders, they have decimated our movement toward a true Tsabara, one promised to us by God. One promised to us, that if ours would tilt the scales of judgement toward salvation over damnation. They, the Atudites, the Takfiris among us and the Euclean imperialists seek to deny Irfani salvation, but they seek also our oppression and dispossession.

“Our mission is not yet changed, but the ground has changed. We face the greatest threat to our freedoms and liberties as Badawiyans and as Irfani since the Atudites and the Colonists came together to rule as minority dictators. We must resist, we must resist the Atudite, the Takfiri and the Euclean if we are to remain free” he said.

“Nazim al-Qutayni is a murderer and a false idol. He is not my president, he will never be my president and God’s will, he will be thrown out and brought to justice” Sheik Salah further said.

A worrying development

The response by the thousands in the east and south will no doubt ring alarm bells in Adunis. Even as Nazim al-Qutayni rebuilds the presidential office both physically and metaphorically, he now faces significant opposition in large tracts of the country and the population. His decision to authorise allies in the military and law enforcement to violently overthrow Yahya Aboud and the National Irfanic Party has led to a vitriolic debate and a major change in the national crisis.

The unconfirmed reports that six provincial heads, collectively representing half the country and 17.1 million citizens, were present at the rally, alongside major figures from the NIP and Federal Army who fled the capital, will be most troubling. The presence of General Hadir Salah on stage with Sheik Faizan Salah (no relation) will burn in the minds of the acting president’s allies and even those within the Atudite People’s Party. General Salah is holds hefty influence among large parts of the Federal Army, while Sheik Salah has emerged as a major political actor with millions of followers across Badawiyan-Tsabara.

As one Atudite official in the Federal Security Service noted under the condition anonymity, “while the coup may have averted an Atudite breakaway from an NIP-government, its pushed half the country away. Sheik Salah is a dangerous man, his popular, influential and is coalescing equally influential and powerful figures around him. We could see a resumption of violence and chaos, this time led by a broad Badawiyan Irfanic movement.”

Mahmoud Sadr, a close associate of the acting president tweeted, “we praise the bold action against a wannabe dictator, but the man’s death [Yahya Aboud] has only set in motion a new phase in our troubles.”

Another figure close to Al-Qutayni said, “the coup has left the government in complete disarray, we have no idea what is going on in the east. The acting president is aware, and we are working to restore calm across all Tsabara.”

Rebuilding the government and trust

Since the coup last week, acting president Nazim al-Qutayni has moved quickly to “rebuild the government and trust” according to his spokesman. Since the coup, the acting president has called for a government of national unity, legalising the Atudite People’s Party and his own, Party for Irfanic Democracy. He’s appointed key allies to his cabinet, including Atudite and Sotirian technocrats.

Samir Machoun, a Sotirian-Badawiyan has been appointed Minister of Finance, while, Yinon Amir, a former leader of the APP has been appointed Special Advisor, to assist in the development of reforms aiming at restoring and empowering the cosocial system.

This morning, the government announced it was inviting the Atudite Peoples’ Party into discussions to “find a solution to the crisis that has gripped our country. We want to bring peace for elections, we cannot have elections in times of violence. We must come together to find mutually beneficial solutions for our country”, his spokesman told reporters. Acting President al-Qutayni then spent much of the afternoon talking to foreign leaders, assuring them of the situation and calling for their support in his efforts to stabilise Tsabara.

Nazim al-Qutayni before TV cameras yesterday restored the constitution and civil liberties, while announcing, “immediate action will be taken to restore unity to our armed forces and law enforcement. We will not see a repeat of Sfira, because we will come out of this crisis as one nation and one people once again.”

Today, Dalmazio Pasquarello, incumbent Councillor for Guardia Island in the Assiman parochial government has announced his intention to not run for his longtime parochial seat, but instead establish a new political party to run on the federal level.

At a press conference, the sixty-year old Dalmazio Pasquarello said that "for generations, this motherland has been run by elites on Imagua, to the detriment of the people of the Assimas. After having served for nearly three decades as Councillor for Guardia Island, I feel that I have done all I could as part of the parochial government."

"For decades, the people of these islands have felt neglect, as the policies from Cuanstad have centralized power and wealth in the hands of the Estmerophone elites. For too long, we put trust in far-left parties like the DLP and the Nationals, only to see them betray our interests time and time again," Pasquarello declared.

"Thus, I intend to establish the Movement for a New Imagua, one which will respect traditional family values, one which will curb illegal immigration, one which will be tough on crime, and one which will ensure not only an elected Senate, but a fairer voting system than first-past-the-post," Pasquarello announced. "And I am confident that before the 2020 elections, we will be able to find enough people willing to stand up for those values, and have them run in every constituency in the Lesser House."

When asked about the prospects for his party, Pasquarello responded that "people across this country, both in the mainland and on these islands, are sick and tired of the status quo. I am completely confident that we will gain at least five seats in 2020."

More as the story develops.

BREAKING Government of National Unity formed by Interim President

Image
Interim President Nazim al-Qutayni announcing the unity government.
Adunis, Adunis Province - Interim President Nazim al-Qutayni has formed a “national unity government” with the Atudite People’s Party and the Sotirian Democratic Party, to “ease the means of rehabilitating the nation.” The move guarantees the interim government a majority in the Grand Assembly but has provoked wide condemnation from the National Irfanic Party and the League of the Righteous.

In a move aimed at “promoting calm and peace”, interim president Nazim al-Qutayni has successfully secured the backing of the APP and SDP in forming a unity government with his Party for Irfanic Democracy. This was preceded by agreements by National Union, Freedom and Justice, and the People’s Democratic Party to join the new government.

In a meeting with reporters following talks, interim president al-Qutayni said, “today is the first day in the journey toward rebuilding our country, restoring trust and democracy and rebuilding our society. Through this unity government, together, all peoples of Tsabara will move forward to developing a new constitution worthy of our cohabitation.”

He said further, “this unity government will move to ease the situation so that elections can take place. We will work at the same time to draw up a new constitution, one that reinforces our shared rights and ensures that our country is held tighter together.”

Under the agreement, APP leader, Aryeh Kahlon will serve as Interim Deputy President and head a new body tasked with writing a new constitution, while Bechir Helou, the leader of the SDP, will serve as Interim Deputy President and Minister of the Interior. The government is expected to be reshuffled to better represent the parties of the unity government.

Many have welcomed the new development, with several commentators praising the actions of interim president Nazim al-Qutayni since the controversial coup last week.

Former president, Salim Hwari said, “he may well have taken power through violence, which we will come to address in the future, but so far, Nazim al-Qutayni has proven highly adept and successful in bringing some calm to our country.”

Surena Ali, the head of the Tsabara Human Rights Watch also praised the government saying, “at last a leader who works for freedom, liberty and interests of all Tsabarans.”

However, the announcement of the unity government has further enflamed tensions with the Eastern provinces and the League of the Righteous.

In a speech uploaded online, Sheik Faizan Salah condemned the new government saying, “the true face of our enemy has come to view. Takfiris, Atudites and Sotirians united in their pursuit of oppression and tyranny against the Irfani. This false president is only further condemning himself by joining up with enemies of Badawiyans all over.”

Anti-government protests have continued across the east, with marches in Hitteen, Sidi Amar, Beit Shajaf and Lazrou.

Interim Premier, Aslan Ocalan issued a statement warning the eastern provincial governments, “while opposition to the change of government is to be expected, no provincial government or group should be confused or doubtful in this government’s commitment to ensuring the territorial integrity or security of the nation.”

However, despite progress made since the coup, in restoring stability to large parts of the country, “large sections of the military have gone dark” according to Federal Army source. Many commanders and officers in the eastern and south-eastern defence sectors are refusing to communicate with military command in Adunis, while there are unconfirmed reports that unit commanders in the east have reportedly met with Sheik Salah.

Another source said, “units loyal to Atwan Al-Tughluq based in the east have gone silent, no one in military command or the government can get hold of officers or even foot soldiers. This is deeply troubling, since despite the political successes, the armed forces are incredibly fractured and divided.”

Concerns over the military’s cohesiveness were deepened this morning following the shooting and killing of Brigadier General Hassan Chaoun, a Sotirian officer based in the north of the country. He was reportedly shot dead by his aide-de-camp, a Major Abdullah al-Nasri. It was later revealed that Major al-Nasri was a regular attendee of League of the Righteous events at his local Beytol.

The military situation has led to calls for a widespread purge of pro-LR officers from the armed forces. Senior member of the PID, Samir Sabbalah told TBN News, “if we cannot secure unity in the armed forces, we all face the threat of insurrection or a counter-coup by extremists. We must remove dangerous officers from the armed forces.”

Oil and gas climb as Tsabaran government lurches
Investors reach for energy futures amid shortage fears
Image
A Montecaran-flagged tanker docks at Tsabara's
largest coastal refinery on Friday.

MONTECARA—Oil and gas futures prices reached a 52-week high Thursday as the political situation in Tsabara, the region's major energy player, remained uncertain. Crude oil was trading at Ł325.17 per barrel when the Borse closed, a 5.6% increase from just last week. Formation of the so-called Government of National Unity by interim president Nazim al-Qutayni seems to have done little to assuage the market's fears that political and military conditions in Tsabara will deteriorate further.

News of the unity government comes amid an exceptionally turbulent month for Tsabara. Seven provinces threatened to secede from the federation on 2 November, including Netanya, which shares a maritime border with Montecara. Then-acting president Yahya Aboud responded by declaring martial law and suspending the constitution on 5 November, prompting forces loyal to al-Qutayni to overthrow him two days later. Aboud was killed in the coup.

Many traders are betting on curtailed supplies and reduced productive capacity in the oil and gas industries heading into 2020. "Oil is not an industry that can make sharp turns," said Ivano Salmeri, a spokesman for Bànca Ultramarìn. "Once capacity is reduced, it it a time-consuming and expensive process to build it back up. There have already been enough interruptions in supply to suggest that it may be months or years before Tsabaran production is back to 100%."

Twin oil and gas pipelines run from Tsabara under Montecara to Florena and the rest of the Euclean Community. They supply nearly all of Montecara's fossil fuels and form the backbone of the energy supply in the eastern EC. If these pipelines were compromised, both Montecara and the EC would face an imminent energy crisis.

The Montecaran ambassador to Tsabara, Paòla Acotati, urged calm and restraint among the belligerent factions at a press conference on Friday morning. "Tsabara is in danger of stumbling into the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet. The Montecaran government supports all efforts made toward establishing a lasting peace," she said.

Concerns Grow Over Lack Of Rain

SHAREImage Image Image Image
Marieke De Bruyn (@MDeBruyn)
29 November (3:00pm)|PIETERSBURG

Image
A man stands in a dusty field in central-west Veld province.

Beachgoers in the north of the country may be enjoying an extended run of settled weather, but farmers in the centre of the country are looking up to the sky with increasing concern, as expected rainfall from the beginning of the wet season has failed to arrive in amounts enough to prevent drought conditions from occurring.

Chris Hughes of the National Meteorological Service (NMD) said that the typically moist winds from the interior of the continent, fed by the annual monsoon on the eastern coast of Asteria Inferior, have failed to materialise due to weaker onshore easterly winds.
"We're seeing a reduced strength in the weather systems that bring with them the rainfall typical of central and southeast Nuvania during the wet season," he said. "This means that what rain does fall will not fall in enough amounts to prevent a drought from occurring." He said that the possibility of the lack of strong easterly winds was an "oscilation" in ocean currents which he said "happens from time to time."
"Ocean currents affect air currents and vice versa," he said. "This means that sometimes they become stronger, and we get more rain, or they become weaker, and we get less."

The potential effects of this reduced rainfall are well known to farmers living in central, northern, and eastern areas of Veld province, which is the most affected by seasonal rainfall patterns. A significant percentage of Nuvania's agricultural output comes from Veld province.

Pieter Duschesne, the Regional President of the National Farmers Association (NBB) of central Veld, said that farmers were aware of the consequences of reduced rainfall and drought conditions, but said that recent tensions in the Arucian Sea had seen reduced prices for agricultural products such as sugar cane, fruit, and meat, which meant that they would be seeing significantly reduced income.
"Prices for many agricultural exports haven't recovered," he said. "Farmers are expecting lower payouts and the possibility of a drought will have them very concerned."

Duschense said that additional costs would be born primarily by cattle farmers, who will faced increased costs to buy and import feed which would reduce the profitability of the many cattle farms that exist in Veld province. He also said that reduction of herd sizes and a lack of demand for live heads would reduce prices, and make selloffs unlikely to make up any shortfalls.
"Weather events like this really have knock on effects for the farmers and the communities they support," he said. "Reduced income for farmers is reduced income for rural towns, and for rural businesses."

Effects of a drought would be felt beyond the rural communities in the Veld, and inside Nuvania's biggest cities. Previous droughts have seen food prices increase substantially for certain food products, such as meat and milk. Food prices increased by 17% during a significant drought between 1988 and 1990, and the last major drought to affect Nuvania in 2009 saw an increase in food prices by five percent.

How a potential drought could affect Nuvanians today is currently unknown. Senior economist Straan Potgeiter with the Central Bank of Nuvania said that potential effects could see a rise in food prices "significantly higher" than recent droughts.
"We've seen international instability and insecurity as a result of the unwillingness of the international community to enforce international maritime law," he said. "Uncertainty has increased prices of imports into Nuvania and this has pushed up the cost of living this year by 15%. With restricted domestic supplies due to a potential drought, price increases could increase to well beyond 30%."

While it would mean very little for those earning Nuvania's highest incomes, the increase in prices could put greater strain on lower income households, including rural households that support Nuvania's agricultural industry, especially indigenous households. The Department of Statistics and National Information of the Ministry of Internal Affairs states that indigenous households had an average income of ₲105,911 (€6,833), or roughly ₲2,030.50 (€131) a week to meet living costs, including food.

Annabelle Van Der Westhuizen, a spokesperson for the National Food Bank, said that prices now are affordable for most low income households. She said that the organisation had not received any additional calls for assistance.

A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture said that they were aware of the situation in Veld province and had ensured enough money would be placed into a relief fund for farmers in the event a drought was declared. It said that approximately ₲42 million (€2.7 million) had been set aside for farmers, and that the government would commit more money to the fund if required.

Meteorologist Chris Hughes said that long term forecasts were reasonably difficult in this respect but said that there were signs a drought could occur as early as January next year.
"Long term we're likely to see a drier December than usual," he said. "Beyond that unless the easterly winds strengthen we could see many areas in Veld and northern Brabantia provinces reach drought status by mid-January." Hughes said that farmers and governments need to prepare now if they are to mitigate any effects.
"We should be acting now, or it could be too late."

NEW BOOK SHOWS RARE INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF EX-KING ELTON II
A close confident of the former king will publish The King and I: My Friendship with Caldia's Troubled King next month.

HRH The Prince Elton, formerly Elton II, has mostly kept a low profile with few public appearances since his abdication in 2010.

SPÁLGLEANN – Just shy of a decade after his abdication, the legacy of Elton II remains a complicated affair. His uneasy reign as King lasted 8 years, 5 months, and 30 days and was one of the shortest in Caldish history. In fact, his reign was so brief it was the shortest since that of John Dejarlais, who usurped the throne from his daughter in 1626. A host of factors contributed to the brevity of Elton II's reign, culminating in his abdication in August 2010. While some of these have been known publicly for a while, a new book by a confident and long-time friend of the former sovereign now known as His Royal Highness the Prince Elton provides a rare insight into the life of the troubled king.

The King and I: My Friendship with Caldia's Troubled King is set to be published in January. Written by Andrew Quinn, the book is a memoir of Quinn's own life and deals extensively with his friendship with Elton II. It begins when the two met while studying at Saint Adomnán's University in the 1950s. Elton is portrayed as the ever-anxious Prince of Ghailles, the heir designate and eldest child of his mother Ellen II. Quinn reflects on Elton's strained relationship with his parents, especially his father Philippe of Sartoux who is described several times by Quinn as "over-bearing". The young prince is shown to be under immense pressure by his parents, and this often came from his father. The Prince of Sartoux longed for his eldest son to succeed his wife on the Caldish throne. In fact, he wished for it so strongly that Ellen II refused to consider any of her other children as heir designate.

Speaking on the late queen, Quinn writes that "Philippe was her blind spot, and to a degree so was Elton or at least who she had hoped Elton would become". He claims this was well known within royal circles, where many had hoped Ellen II would relent and name one of her other children as heir designate. However, she showed no interest in doing so according to royal records, those who knew her, and historians.

This clashed with Elton II's own desires, he longed to become a painter and an art collector and had little interest in matters of state. Quinn reflects that he remembers Elton resenting his time at Saint Adomnán's as he studied government and economics.

"That was all chosen for him, and whoever would be surprised that was the case? The heir designate to the throne would be educated as such, and unfortunately for Elton that meant he had to study the great names of statecraft instead of the great names of Euclean art. It was chosen for him, like so many aspects of his life had been" Quinn writes.

Royal historians corroborate most of Quinn's claims. Letters written by Elton II to his aunt, the Duchess of Bouladuff, were made available after her letters and collections were transferred to the University of Spálgleann's archives. Several of the letters sent to the Duchess, who served as a mentor to the young prince, detail his frustrations while at university.

While the book begins with their encounters at university, Quinn uses that as a way to outline his credentials before delving deeper. In the book, Quinn claims that Elton II had "no interest whatsoever" in marrying.

"As many people our age began to look for love, [Elton] never did. He turned to the arts, to literature for that comfort not to a man or woman".

He also claims that the prince did not marry "in part to spite his father", a claim that has previously been disputed. Elton II never married, but there is no indication this was retaliatory in nature. One biographer of Elton II, Mary Kiley, has argued that the former king never married because he was likely an "aromatic asexual". Such identities were not understood in the 1950s and 1960s when Elton II was expected to marry and likely would have caused confusion among relatives and royal courtiers who did not understand. However, it is important to note Elton II himself has never spoken on the subject and such suspicions remain unconfirmed and speculatory in nature.

The book skips time after detailing Elton's fraught relationship with his siblings. While this is not new information, Quinn offer's a unique perspective on the subject. Elton II had strained relationships with his siblings, especially his sister Princess Margaret and his brother Prince John. The two were media sensations, capturing headlines and hearts alike. Princess Margaret's wedding to the Weranian Kaiser captivated the world and was a highly promoted event. She was sometimes called the People's Princess in the Caldish press in the lead up to her marriage, and her media presence cast a long shadow. Similarly, Prince John became a professional footballer and established a media profile of his own. The two were considered to be much more popular than Elton, who was more reserved and maintained a low profile. Quinn claims this caused tensions within the family, damaging Elton's relationships with his siblings. Notably, however, Quinn writes that Elton continued to have an amicable relationship with his youngest sibling, Prince William. The two were close according to Quinn and William is said to have been supportive of his brother.

This tension eventually culminated in the events that most directly influenced Elton II's decision to abdicate, Quinn claims.

"The media were the ones who set the stage for the disaster that marked the beginning of [Elton II's] reign as king. The gushing love felt for his high profile, popular siblings never existed for him. His low profile made sure of that. When the political crisis engulfed the government, of course it would consume him. It was in many ways his debut in the press".

He is referencing the political crisis that erupted within the government of Niamh Nic Uilliam. The Social Democrats had decided they were finished with their leader, and had replaced her in the run up to the 2002 general election. Against the wishes of her party, she refused to resign as Taoiseach after negotiations with her declared successor, Séamus Ó Faoláin, had soured. Hoping to prevent an early general election amid a political crisis, both Nic Uilliam and the party looked to Ellen II for mediation. As the monarch, she was not only politically neutral but had the constitutional powers of the sovereign. The process was slow and before an agreement could be reached, Ellen II had died in February 2002. Her son took the throne and was faced with his first big test.

The decades of experience his mother had were of no help to the new king. The party argued extensively for the king to dismiss Ni Uillian as Taoiseach and appoint Ó Faoláin. Convinced by their arguments, Elton II dismissed Ni Uillian as Taoiseach in March 2002. He was met with strong criticism from from Ni Uillian, her allies, and the press. This was especially strong among right-wing elements in the press. It quickly became an issue for the 2002 general election.

Elton II was decried as undemocratic by the press and unfit to rule by some commentators. Énna Ó Ceallaigh, the leader of the Liberty Party, said the king's involvement in party infighting was "shocking" and "cause for alarm".

Quinn, who by his own admission had mostly fallen out of touch with Elton II at this point, argues that it was "very likely that the king was deeply hurt by the criticism and perhaps event felt betrayed. His first major act as king was assailed by the country, and it was only made worse by his siblings".

Kaisern Margaret had recently been widowed and Elton II was often juxtaposed to her by the press. Some even began to call for her to replace him as monarch, bringing with her decades of experience and being able to restore the popularity of the monarchy. There is little evidence to indicate that Margaret had any involvement in this media narrative, or that she even wanted to become queen. However, Elton II had yet to name an heir designate and Margaret was heir presumptive.

"A simple abdication would have ended the crisis and allowed him to live the life he long wanted, but I was hardly surprised to see him fight on ahead. It would have been unlike Elton to admit defeat so early" Quinn reflects.

Quinn also argues that press coverage further damaged Elton's relationship with Margaret and influenced his decision to look elsewhere when it became time to name an heir designate. He did so in 2007 after a heart attack. It was around this time that Quinn reconnected with his old friend.

"It was now time, he knew it and told me as such, for him to name a designate. His health had failed him, a stronger betrayal than the press or anyone in his family had ever dealt him. By then, he was old and even bitter. Bitter at the world, bitter at the life he had lived and bitter for having failed to live the life he had always wanted. It was a sorry state to see my old friend in, who had been so vibrant, so passionate, and so thoughtful in his younger years".

In 2007, a statement released on behalf of Elton II confirmed the would name one of his nephews or nieces as his heir apparent "within the year". He chose the eldest child of his youngest brother, Prince William. Laird Kevin was young, but had always been known as a kind child. He was close with his grandmother, Ellen II, and Quinn says it was that kindness and close relationship that influenced Elton's decision.

"His mother was everything for the nation he never could be. Who better, he told me, than to pick one of her beloved grandchildren especially one that had been fortunate enough to have known her so closely".

Quinn also claims that he would not "give the media the satisfaction" of naming either Princess Margaret or Prince John as his heir. This sentiment extended to their children as part of that "sad, horrific bitterness" that Quinn came to see in Elton II. This would result in his 2010 abdication, and the ascension of his nephew to the throne as Kenneth IV. Since then, Elton II has largely avoided publicity as part of a "vanishing act" Quinn claims.

Overall, Quinn's book proves to be an easy and engaging read. It provides a unique perspective on the life of the former king and a rare insight into the decisions he made. However, it is important to note that a lot of Quinn's claims cannot particularly be verified independently. He shares stories that deal intimately with Elton II's thought process, something even the most renowned royal historians and biographers have difficulty portraying credibly. It is important to take that into consideration when reading Quinn's book and mulling over his many claims. St. Ellen's Palace had also declined to comment on the book beyond saying it was "speculatory" and "not a work published by an accredited royal historian, biographer, or author".

Co-Commissar Larion Tyushnyakov (l) met with Satucine Foreign Minister Maximilien Brisebois (r)
over the past week.

Volosovo, Chervolesia — After a four month long saga, the captain and chief mate of the seized Satucine freighter, the Mistral, are set to be repatriated as part of deal with Satucin.

Co-Commissar of Foreign Affairs Larion Tyushnyakov met with his Satucine counterpart, Maximilien Brisebois, over the course of last week. This was the first time that Chervolesia and Satucin have entered talks since 11 September when Satucin unilaterally broke off negotiations with Chervolesia.

Early Monday, it was announced that a deal was reached between the two governments. The deal entails the immediate release of Mistral Captain Henry Souchon and Chief Mate Emmanuel Carrell as well as an acquittal on all charges the two face, including espionage, and the reduction of Chervolesia’s maritime exclusion zone by 50%. In return, Sautcin will recognise the new boundaries of the maritime exclusion zone as part of Chervolesia’s economic exclusion zone and reopen the Arucian Straits to Chervolesian shipping.

The Mistral was seized by the People’s Liberation Army Navy on 30 July, after the ship entered Chervolesian territorial waters. After not answering any of the hails sent by the lead People’s Liberation Army Navy ship, the commanding and political officers of the two vessels voted unanimously to seize the freighter. The ship’s seizure was supported by both the People’s Commissariat of the Navy and the central government.

Following a seven day investigation into the seizure by the Main Intelligence Directorate, it was revealed that the ship was acting as a spy vessel for Satucin. On 6 August, the Judiciary charging Captain Souchon and Chief Mate Carrell with conspiracy to act against the people and republic of Chervolesia. The Satucine government has denied that the Mistral was a spy vessel in the aftermath of the Main Intelligence Directorate report being made public. The refusal of the Satucine government to admit the Mistral was a spy vessel became a sticking point as negotiations continued to fail and relations between Chervolesia and Satucin continued to deteriorate. On 11 September, Satucin withdrew from the negotiations and closed the Arucian Straits to all Chervolesian shipping.

The successful negotiations will largely be viewed as a victory by the two-month-old Post-Kurdyashov government. The nascent Masalina-Mravinskaya government was able to keep the maritime exclusion zone established by Security Directive 2019, albeit in a grossly reduced capacity, and was able to successfully negotiate the reopening of the Arucian Straits.

The straits being reopened to shipping is expected to have an immediate effect on the slumping Chervolesian economy. Their closure on 11 September resulted in the economic productivity for September, October, and November declining by an average of 7.1%, with October seeing the highest drop at 13.9%. The influx of foreign capital and material goods will help ease the burden of drastic and unstable planning and help bring about a sense of normalcy following the October Revolution.

Landmark case frees almost all July Spring protesters charged under the Restoring Order Act

Courthouse of the Supreme Court of Aimilia in Kakzazna

The Supreme Court of Aimilia gave judgment to a number of related cases on Monday. The most important results to come out of this were that over five thousand people prosecuted under the Restoring Order Act have had their prosecutions and sentences quashed, and that certain other sections of the Restoring Order Act have been found invalid, both primarily for inconsistency with the Natural Rights Act which has special paramountcy under the Constitution Act. The Restoring Order Act was passed in August, at the time successfully ending the July Spring, which consisted of various strikes and demonstrations.

Over five thousand people, convicted of or undergoing trial for offences under the Restoring Order Act, are now walking free. While the provisions of the Restoring Order Act mostly still stand, their application was found to be severely restricted by the Supreme Court of Aimilia's judgments yesterday, on Monday. The overwhelming number of convictions under it were found to violate parts of the Natural Rights Act; section 6 guarantees the freedom of movement, which controls on assemblies in public spaces violated. Restrictions on the way protests and communications could be made meanwhile violated section 3, regarding freedom of expression, and authorisations of police actions violated section 2, relating to security of the person. The Natural Rights Act overrides all other laws other than the Constitution Act, according to the Constitution which is the basic law of Aimilia; while the Restoring Order Act purported to override other laws, it was therefore still restricted in its power by the Natural Rights Act, which was passed along with the Constitution to protect human rights at the establishment of the Aimilian Republic.

Section 10 of the Natural Rights Act also guarantees remedies for violations of rights: the determination of the appropriate remedies has been remitted to lower courts, in many cases, by the Supreme Court, which found itself unprecedentedly overwhelmed by the caseload after the July Spring and the Restoring Order Act. However, releases were immediately granted, and it is widely expected that monetary compensation will follow, not only for imprisonment, but for violence and other unauthorised acts not relating to custody which occurred in the carrying out of the Restoring Order Act. For example, in the case brought by ForaPress against the government, damages are being claimed for having to comply and cooperate with government censorship laws.

While the Supreme Court is the court of first instance for cases involving the Natural Rights Act, it has considerable discretion in the running of the court; many of the cases it heard were on appeal, as were many on first instance. A court made up of nine judges, Monday not only saw the most number of cases relating to the constitution or natural rights ever decided in a single day, but also in a single week, and in a single month. In the leadup to the recent judgments, which were scheduled to be given all at once because of the close relations between various cases, there were also reports of government interference with the court system. Some earlier cases this year found against the government for violating the separation of powers as per the Constitution, but those cases carried no penalties and only reversed government actions.

While in academic and professional circles it was generally expected the government would lose many of its cases, the government had been indicating it expected to win, and polling of the population established that they also did not expect much to come of the cases against the government. However, the breadth of the decisions against the government as well as the preliminary nature of the remedies has surprised all, including lower courts which often were somewhat more favourable to the government. Only a few dozen people legally remain in custody under the Restoring Order Act, which was heavily read down to conform with the Natural Rights Act.

Some controls imposed by the police and other parts of the executive, many put in place in response to July but never retracted, have also been overturned. It is been reported that there have been some movements of police, and that people have moved into some areas previously restricted and faced no resistance. However, no comment from the government has yet been forthcoming about compliance with court orders. The Conservative Group who are in power in the Kazbastad have in the past refused to respond to questions as to whether they would comply with court orders, which are a form of law which disobeying can have harsh consequences. The Restoring Order Act was among the first laws passed by the Kazbastad after members mainly from the National Liberals defected to the Conservative Group to give them a majority in their own right; this occurred with fierce resistance from opposition lawmakers, including former National Liberals who were part of the Conservative-led coalition until it broke down in the July Spring.

Sources from within the civil service say that communication from higher ups has yet been patchy, perhaps consistent with their scrambling to find ways to comply with the loss in the lawsuits. The popular reaction, however, seems to have been much quicker, with the anti-government lawyers being celebrated, and crowds coming out spontaneously to party on the streets in parts of the country, not hindered by light rains. Spokespeople from the Party of Labour say that the decisions free the will of the people. However, the Conservative Group has been polling around the same level that it had been when it swept into government in 2015, for the first time in recent history, while the last holdouts from July protests died out several months ago. Professor Zabaznagam from the University of Tagnatambim, lecturer in political science, says that the result may galvanise anti-government sentiment, especially those who lost their jobs in the July Spring, but may not recapture public opinion more broadly with the relatively stable performance of the government since the Spring. They further opine that while the government will be politically hurt, its goal was always to break the momentum of the July Spring, which it has achieved, rather than to permanently hold down public sentiment with the Restoring Order Act. It is too early to say, but the professor suggests the government may still be in a strong position for the general election early next year.

The PKE stock index was slightly trending downwards at time of writing on Tuesday morning, near a 6 month low.

I mean in fact they may have gotten away with it, because they will just have to pay some compensation money now while the popular movement has had its head cut off unless the people get active again. I hope to vote for them again but it is difficult to see how I can after they have done this sort of unreasoned thing. They broke the law for their own benefit? It seems they did, it is only change from the worse from previous governments despite their excellent policies. Very disappointment.

Then-premier Yuan Xiannian with deceased Tsabaran president Atwan
al-Tughluq in Adunis in 2010.

Analysis - Xiaodong's Tsabaran dilemia
Xiaodong's huge interests in the Badawiyan nation are under threat from instability and its own allies
Matthew Cheung reporting from Yanglin, Jindao
December 04, 2019

The death of two presidents, assumption of power of an interim government and threat of succession of Atudite provinces in Tsabara has dominated global headlines. Yet it has had an unexpected effect further south in Coius where the implications of these developments are still being processed.

In 2010, when visiting Adunis, then-premier Yuan Xiannian called the then-incumbent president of Tsabara Atwan al-Tughluq "an icon for a proud Badawiya and a strong Coius". This visit, the first of a Xiaodongese leader since the fall of the Tsabaran socialist regime that ruled the country from 1948 to 1986, was accompanied with a massive effort by Xiaodong to fully integrate Tsabara into Xiaodong's "grand strategy" - a re-direction of global supply lines and economic links from Euclea to southern Coius.

Tsabara had already been a member of the International Forum for Developing States, the cartel of developing countries led by Xiaodong and Zorasan that aims to increase mutual investment mostly in the form of massive infrastructure projects and tariff reduction agreements mainly in the realm of natural resources. Yet in the past decade Xiaodong has expanded its interests in Tsabara - not only is the country now an associate of the Rongzhuo Strategic Protocol Organisation but has also since 2009 received €24 billion in Xiaodongese foreign direct investment, particularly in the natural gas sector. The ultimate aim of a energy pipeline stretching from southern Xiaodong to northern Tsabara seemed to be a realistic possibility, binding a large part of Coius into the Xiao-Zorasani economic bloc and potentially making inroads in southern Euclea.

This huge economic and strategic interest in Tsabara was predicated on the idea that al-Tughluq's mixture of Ifranic populism and political pragmatic would maintain its popularity whilst the Atudite population - oft-criticised due to their former rule as a dominant but repressive minority in the 1930's and 1940's - would gradually either fade in their political power or align with anti-Euclean interests alongside the Ifranic population. In 2014 State Chairman Jiang Zhongyu named Tsabara as one of Xiaodong's most promising allies and that Xiaodong aimed to integrate Tsabara into a "continental system based on respect for sovereignty, prosperity and development".

The recent political developments in Tsabara have thrown this strategy into disarray. Al-Tughluq was Xiaodong's favoured partner - a man who shared Rongzhuo's mixture of anti-colonialism paired with anti-socialism whilst being a tough pragmatist able to maintain power for over 14 years. His death was viewed with alarm in the International Relations ministry who worried al-Tughluq's successor - his bellicose prime minister Yahya al-Aboud - would push the country into destabilisation. Yet even after al-Aboud critic Nazim al-Qutayni was given a warrant for an arrest premier Xi Yao-tong stated that if the procedure was legal under Tsabaran law Xiaodong would not comment on the matter. Sheik Faizan Salah, a hardliner cleric and critic of al-Qutayni, received ample coverage in Xiaodongese media which sought to desperately highlight the popularity of the al-Aboud government. The declaration of martial law in Tsabara was portrayed in the state-owned Xiaodong Observer as an "administrative procedure intended to shore up national unity against Euclean-backed agitators and saboteurs". Protesters were described as "rioters" and Atudite secessionists "colonial terrorists".

In a prepared statement last month Vice-Premier Jiang Shaohong stated that the instability in Tsabara was "motivated by the hand of foreign governments intent on destabilising the region for their own interest", an echo of Zorasani First Minister Farzad Akbari.

The seizure of power by former Interior Minister Nazim al-Qutayni has changed the equation yet again. The Xiaodongese government likely hoped that the new president would seek national reconciliation whilst still cracking down on Atudite separatists. The announcement of a national unity government with the "extremist" Atudite People’s Party (APP) has caused deep mistrust in the new administration in Rongzhuo.

The new situation in Tsabara has deeply split the Xiaodongese government into two camps regarding policy on Tsabara. The first camp are the "intergrationists" who believe first and foremost in the political and economic stability of Tsabara. These politicians prioritise the deep economic investments and ties to Tsabaran policy-makers Xiaodong has cultivated in the last two decades and seek to use this economic leverage to ensure al-Qutayni's government maintains cordial relations with Rongzhuo, seeing him however imperfect as the best source for stability in the troubled country.

The other faction are the "interventionists" who heavily supported the al-Aboud government. Since the announcement of the national unity government and the suspected links Atudite separatists have to Euclean policymakers these politicians have lost faith in al-Qutayni and support Xiaodong and Zorasan to make more bullish moves in ensuring an anti-Euclean government comes to power in Adunis.

Neither Yuan Xiannian nor Xi Yao-tong have played their hand yet, although both are believed to be working closely with Zahedan to formulate a solution. In the meantime the majority of Xiaodongese direct investments in Tsabara have either been put on hold or completely abandoned due to the unfavourable conditions for business in the country since the death of al-Tughluq as well as increased the mechanisms of control over the final use of the credit issued to Adunis. Currently, Xiaodong seems to be reassessing its options and shoring up its economic position in Tsabara to perhaps shape its future direction - but with events moving so fast such a policy may be anachronistic.

2019 Election: largest democratic vote in Zorasani history begins

Image
A woman flashes for the victory sign after casting her vote in a Beytol.

Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- Millions of Zorasanis are expected to cast their ballots today in what will officially be the largest democratic election in the country’s history. With over 110 million registered voters, it will be largest election in the Irfanic world. The last official poll has predicted a landslide victory for principalist candidates, and a victory of the bloc led by First Minister Farzad Akbari.

Polling stations have opened across the entire Union following morning prayers, with Beytols, schools and public buildings throwing their doors open to voters.

The National Electoral Council is expecting high turnout with clear weather and relatively mild temperatures.

This election, called by First Minister Akbari last month following the expulsions of 27 MPs due to “unconstitutional and anti-social behaviour” has been dominated by issues surrounding security, foreign affairs and the economy. The election has also been dominated by the rapid rise of the True Way group.

The emergence of the True Way group two days prior to the dissolution of parliament has dramatically transformed the country’s political environment. Initially led by Colonel Vahid Namdar MP, the news that First Minister Akbari, his entire cabinet and even State President Vahid Isfandiar had joined the True Way saw its legitimacy and reach exceed expectations.

During the early weeks of the election, First Minister Akbari succeeded Col. Namdar as leader of True Way, while every principalist candidate across all constituencies announced membership of the True Way. In several constituencies, more than one candidate announced membership of the True Way. The group by the mid-point of the campaign had began to take the form of a political party, organising and funding candidates, while it became a popular platform with a manifesto and policy list.

Much of the True Way’s campaign has been defined by its vow to “unite the country, through patriotism, faith and a commitment to independence.” The True Way also made much of the ongoing crisis in Tsabara, with senior figures claiming that the crisis to the north would “spread to Zorasan if the country did not rally to its self-defence.”

First Minister Akbari has vowed to “mobilise the nation toward self-defence and economic strength”, vowing to further his reform agenda aimed at promoting enterprise and aspiration. These include a promise to hasten the reform of state-enterprises, while privatising numerous state and local level state-enterprises. He also promised improved access to healthcare for rural regions and a continued strive to end water shortages.

Competing blocs have struggled to resist the rapid rise of True Way, lacking the organisation, resources and unified platform. Reformists have protested against the True Way throughout the election with many claiming the group is unconstitutional as it violates the law against political parties.

Despite the protests, collective polls for blocs or groupings have shown significant support for True Way. The group has received the support of 57.5% of voters on average throughout the campaign period.
If True Way secures the same level of support following today’s vote, it could gain over 495-8 seats of 580 in the Popular Council.

We will keep you updated on our live page.
