CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION BEGINS
Mambo Munashe Ngonidzashe gives a speech to open the convention's proceedings

Gondo Chikwava | 1 OCTOBER, 2019 14:43 | PORT FITZHUBERT, RWIZIKURU

After months of preparation for the constitutional convention at the University of Rwizikuru, all the delegates, including those appointed by the previous Mambo and current Baba wa Mambo, and those elected on the sixteenth of September by the Mambo's loyal subjects have arrived, and the constitutional convention officially opened by the reigning Mambo at 2 o' clock this afternoon.

Munashe Ngonidzashe said that "nearly fifty-five years ago, my grandfather, Izibongo Ngonidzashe decided to establish the modern-day Rwizikuran monarchy. For all this time, my loyal subjects have lacked meaningful say and meaningful representation in the governance of our country, which has significantly hindered our nation's capacity for development, and has made our nation prey to the scourge of corruption."

"The decision made by the Baba waMambo on the twelfth of August to establish a constitutional convention, was, in a way, a start to addressing the problems that the Rwizikuran nation faces, and to ensure that my loyal subjects will be more involved in Rwizikuran politics," Munashe said. "And I am glad to be presiding over this body, to help oversee the development of a new constitution, which shall be given the task to avoid the Scylla of a Euclean-style government, and the Carybdis of absolutism which has greatly harmed our nation."

"This is where we will take a middle path," Munashe declared. "While this course may be perilous, we believe that by maintaining the monarch, and some of the traditional structures that have been put in place, it will guarantee continuity, while by adopting some elements of an Euclean-style governmental system, we can ensure that all Rwizikurans will have a greater say in the operations of our nation. If we can accomplish these two things, then we will have a solid foundation for the creation of a 21st century Rwizikuran monarchy: one where the corruption of past monarchs will be a thing of the past."

"We will make sure that this process will be completed, even if it means we have to sacrifice our holidays, so it can be done both fast, and right," Munashe concluded. "By God's will, we will have this constitution done by June, and then the Basic Law shall be repealed, and new national elections can be called."

Following the applause, Munashe Ngonidzashe said that "now, it is time to start offering your suggestions for how this document will come to be, for we all come from different walks of life: as chiefs, as landlords, as officials for intergovernmental organizations, as teachers, and as homemakers. Together, we can accomplish a better Rwizikuru."

GAULLICA'S POSITION SOLIDIFIED AS RWIZIKURU IS ALL BUT ELIMINATED.
Varne: "Gaullica's place is almost secured, and we're sure and without a doubt our next match will be a victory."

Gaullican fans were caught in a spur of patriotism and the spirit of the game at a 4-1 victory over Rwizikuru.

Alikianos, Piraea

Gaullica presented a strong showing at Independence Stadium in Alikianos, where their second match come in as sigh of relief. Securing a victory against Rwizikuru has kept Gaullica in the race as Ordennya secured a similar needed victory over the Celestial Isles, the team that had the most points in the Seventh Group before Saturday.

Roland Varne, Gaullica's manager, praised the team's "dedication to the game and the desire to do their nation proud. The Group of Sixteen, and more, is ours! We have a reputation to uphold as the reigning champions, of course." The initial draw against Ordennya proved a large morale shock for the fans at home and the team, who had expected -- perhaps over confidently -- that it would be a breeze. Varne did comment that the experience was 'humbling', but praised the 'good football' played.

Max Sartre scored a goal at the nine minute mark, followed by Baptiste Verninac at the twenty-two minute mark. In the sixty-first minute, Sikarudzi Croome managed to score a goal placing the match at a manageable 2-1 for the Crusaders. Rwizikuru was unable to capitalise on this goal, as Sartre scored another goal for the Crusaders a mere three minutes later, and then Jean-Noël Pascal scored with just seconds left to go. The resulting 4-1 victory soundly placed Gaullica at second in the group table.

Sartre, in a post-match press conference, said he was "loving playing the game" and declared that "without the team, [he] wouldn't have scored those goals.'" When asked if he would have liked to score a hat-trick over his brace, he replied "Of course, but I'd rather my team score -- and they did. Bless up Verninac and Pascal."

The conduct of Gustave Vaugrenard has also been praised by the fans and by the press, who has only conceded two goals in two matches, but was successful in stopping numerous Rwizikuran counter-attacks. He saved three other shots on target, guaranteeing his team the victory. "I'm just doing what I have to do. I wish no goal would be conceded. But I'm giving it my all and as long as the fans understand that, I'm more than happy."

Gaullica's next match comes against the Celestial Isles, who she'd have to defeat in order to secure a place in the Group of Sixteen. This is of course not the only avenue in which it can be achieved; if Ordennya secures a surprising loss against the Rwizikuran team -- it could go down to goal difference.

CdM 2019: Etrurian Ultras threaten violence if team fails to progress
Legione Nera and the Lione have threatened to riot if Etruria falls out of the Cup this weekend

Following the tense and nail-bitingly close loss to Narozalica last week, the make-or-break game against Amilia is set to be pivotal in more ways than one. Following the loss to Narozalica, Etruria’s infamous “Ultras” have taken to social media, vowing to “tear the place down” if Etruria fails to proceed to the next stage.
Image
Etrurian fans conducted the "Solarian Salute" when Narozalica was awarded its game-winning penalty,
prompting wide criticism.

In a Coupe de Mond that is already been marred by fan violence, the threat of Etrurian Ultras “ripping up the town” will be met with trepidation among match organisers. It is estimated at least 5,000 of the 15,000 strong Etrurian fan contingent are members of Ultras back home. A majority of whom, hail from the Legione Nera of S.S Solaria and the Lione di San Marco of San Marco-Poveglia. Both Ultra groups are renowned internationally, for their violence and their connections to the Tribune Movement.

Legione Nera’s official social media pages have been flooded with provocative posts, videos and images. In one post, the group said, “our loss to Narozalica is the same as the Marolevs spitting on the graves of every dead Etrurian.” Another re-posted by senior Tribune Movement officials read, “Marolevs want to take our country, and we will stop them. They want to win the Cup; we will stop them.”

After it emerged that for Etruria to proceed to the next stage, Narozalica would need to beat Hennehouwe, Legione Nera began an onslaught against the small northern Euclean country. A series of videos, reportedly produced by the far-right in the country, showed supposed migrants committing crimes and vandalising property, with L.N posting alongside them, “this is the country that we need to lose, its s**t already, so God willing.”

The Lione ultras also attacked Hennehouwe and its team, one post read, “this country has the morals of a street whore and the potential of a rat carrying the plague. Their team should go home now and let a real team and real country progress!”

With the vital matches approaching, both Ultras have gone into overdrive, with Legione Nera threatening violence if Etruria fails to progress, “if we don’t move onto the next stage, the Legion is going to unleash hell. It is not acceptable for a master of the sport to be rigged to lose by the hosts.” The Lione posted, “we have a difficult group, no doubt formulated on purpose by two countries who hate Etruria too much.”

Even non-Ultra fans have been brash on social media, with several popular posts including, “any other Etrurian realised the hosts are two countries who have a weird hatred for Etruria? Considering this group, I wonder…” and, “both these countries claim issues with Etruria for whatever reason, they host and organise. Our group is stacked against us. Coincidence?”

So concerned are some, that Etruria’s FEGC has issued a warning to Etrurian fans, to “not engage in hooliganism and to avoid any instance of hooliganism. This behaviour is not acceptable at international events and will not be tolerated by this association.”

Etruria’s record this Cup has come under intense fire, with many media outlets, right-leaning, unfairly pinning the blame on the two half-Marolevic defenders, Josip Jedvaj and Nikola Skoric. Telegrafo Solariano sparked controversy after it published an editorial claiming both players were “failing in defence because they wanted to see foreign national teams proceeded at the expense of their country.” Another editorial, by the Osservatore Nazionale poured further scorn saying, “it is telling that the full Carinthian, Novalian and Vespasian players are doing their best, those who’s heritage is mixed with peoples from the West aren’t. This may well be something to worry about.”

Etruria’s draw with Hennehouwe at the Cup’s start though less damaging than the loss to Narozalica, resulted in vitriolic grief among the Ultra fans. Etruria’s team played excellently, dominating the Hennish team, but through sloppy attacks and more often, sheer bad luck, failed to capitalise on their repeated attacks on the Hennish goal. The Ultras screamed on social media that the team was “completely f******g useless!”, according to one known Ultra.

The game against Narozalica, which currently leads Group 8, pitted two of the biggest football powerhouses against one another and saw a match marred by dirty tackles and aggressive fan behaviour. The Etrurian fans resorted to insulting chants, with their use of the “Vaffanculo Barbari”; which translates as “f***k off Barbarians” is a common Vespasian slur against Marolevic peoples, used in football, being a predominant fixture of the game. Both teams played excellently, but a late-game penalty awarded to Narozalica due to an illegal tackle by Josip Jedvaj opened the floodgates of attacks on him and Skoric. Not only did the penalty give Narozalica its win, but it unleashed the kind of Ultra behaviour that often brings disrepute upon Etrurian football.

Both Legione Nera and the Lione have dark histories in Etruria. Both stand as the oldest ultra-groups in the country, and are known to engage in hooliganism and violence, which on 14 occasions since 1980, led to murder trials. Both groups have also had suspected ties to organised crime, though since, their primary claim to fames have been overt ties to the Tribune Movement. In both the 2016 and 2018 elections, the two Ultra groups were accused of attacking opposition party activists in the street. Three Legione Nera members were sentenced to prison for an arson attack on a Democratic Alternative office in Turania in 2018.

Foreign Minister Gianfranco Galizia has posted images of himself with members of both Ultras, while President Francesco Carcattera has a framed letter from Legione Nera members praising his leadership and the Tribune Movement’s politics.

Op-Ed: The Som Capaços Party is the political Dark Horse to watch
The government has been spending most of its time since 1989 attempting to dissuade the citizens of Nuxica from voting the center-right 'Conservative Union Party' (PUC) into government, but the seemingly overwhelming fear of a PUC-majority government is misplaced. Som Capaços is on the rise, the 2020 elections draw ever closer, and no one in the establishment seems prepared.

The Moderate wing of the National Worker's Party, originally known as the 'Palliceros,' were given an inch by the interim government of General Amèric Capllonc, the last leader of the 'New Order' regime and the moderate who oversaw the Nuxican transition to democracy, in the December elections following the 1989 Dahlia Revolution. The economy was in poor shape, with inflation and unemployment beginning to skyrocket. The regime's numerous overseas engagements, many of whom were two decades in length, had been draining government coffers. Tensions between the military and civil authorities had been simmering since May of that year, when the military reinstated the full powers of the legislature and judiciary "with martial oversight," with the legislature pulling farther and farther away from the wishes of the junta. Josep Del Clos, aide to Gen. Capllonc, said it succinctly in an 1990 interview with L'Observador: "the regime fell long before the Revolution. After [the death of Gen. Màrius Forniele] the structure may have remained, but the regime was no more." Given that inch, Palliceros -- now the Moderate National Worker's Party -- took a mile.

As proclaimed by Del Clos, the New Order regime was over. With it, the Union of National Prosperity and Progress (UPPN) -- the big-tent political union founded in 1952 in order to give the central government an air of legitimacy -- immediately imploded due to both a lack of legitimate support as well as massive political rifts in policy. The multitude of right-wing political parties that resulted, ranging from center-right to outright Neo-Functionalist, were in utter disarray. The generally liberal and democratic parties, having been essentially beaten into obscurity by the New Order-era Ministry of the Interior, were far too weak to command a decisive majority in the legislature. The final dregs of the regime still clinging to power as members of the National Election Committee had barred the overall National Worker's Party (PON), then led by Adalbert Escarré, from running in the elections.

Escarré, a newly-former guerilla soldier within the insurgency-era Revolutionary Command Council's political wing and a radical revolutionary at heart, vowed to boycott the elections. Many of his supporters, who overall made up a rather small portion of the party, vowed the same. Seeing an opportunity, the Palliceros -- a moderate faction of the PON led by Miquel Pallicer -- decided to break with the party and run as an independent entity. This independent entity, known as the Moderate National Worker's Party, would be allowed to run in the 1990 elections -- should they disavow the Escarritas and the Revolutionary Command Council. They did, creating a rift between the two parties that lasts until the modern day, and were thus allowed to run.

Campaigning on a platform of social democratic values, revitalizing the national health service for all citizens, and making college tuition free for all students, combined with promises of amnesty for many mid and low-level members of the New Order regime, the Moderate National Worker's Party was able to reach out to both moderate leftists as well as moderate centrists and managed to secure a 70 percent majority within the Parliament in the 1990 elections. Miquel Pallicer became the first leftist Prime Minister elected to the office since 1925 (and would serve until 1995) and was able to appoint Governors, pass promised legislation, and cement the authority of the Moderate National Worker's Party in modern Nuxican politics for decades to come.

Following their humiliating defeat in the '95 elections, the scattered members of the began to coalesce and out of the ashes of the UPPN arose the Conservative Union Party (PUC). The PUC would serve as the primary opposition party within Parliament, forming a center-right bulwark which other parties latch onto. For almost two-and-a-half decades following the PUC thus became the biggest threat to the PONM's grip on power, and thus most of the Moderate National Workers' Party attention and messaging was aimed at ensuring that the party's reign would be maintained. For most of that period the Conservative Union Party was able to fill the role of primary opposition party in government, but that is no longer the case. The reason why lies at the feet of one person: Salvador Bassaganyes.

Salvador Bassaganyes i Cortadel has an interesting history, politically speaking, initially a registered member of the Student Union for National Rejuvenation -- the student wing of the UPPN -- since the age of 17, he was also reportedly a member of 'La Joventut,' a quasi-paramilitary militia -- largely a remnant of post-Great War tensions with Chervolesia -- that the New Order regime employed for "national defense and security." Bassaganyes later left both the party and La Joventut following the Dahlia Revolution in 1989. Following this he, by his own account, "began searching in order to find a party which could best serve the people." Politically unaffiliated until 2002, he eventually joined the Moderate National Workers' Party and was elected as an MP for Guadalao East in 2005, thus becoming the youngest Member of Parliament.

His time within the Moderate National Workers' Party was not what most would consider to be the happiest, with Salvador quickly gaining a reputation for being what many within the emerging political establishment as a "bomb-thrower" with a unique brand of politics that fell fairly out of step with the party line. Highly critical of what he saw as the "inability of some sections of the party to meet the demands of the people," Bassaganyes burnished his populist credentials with a strange blend of homegrown nationalism, advocacy for strict law and order policies, and an emphasis on what many would call a new Solarian Catholic ascendancy. These differences placed him quite out of step with the more globally minded, liberal, and largely secular majority within the party. It was thus no surprise that he was quickly relegated to the backbench and effectively frozen out of party participation. He left the party in 2014, citing "intractable and irreconcilable differences between the way the people wish for Nuxica to be, and the future envisioned by 'la classe d’establiment.'"

Bassaganyes founded the 'Som Capaços Party' (PSC) in 2013, largely as a anti-establishment pet project between disaffected members of the social democratic Moderate National Workers' Party, the center-right Conservative Union Party, the environmentalist Green Party, and the defunct nationalist Nuxican League. Its name, a worker’s rights advocacy phrase — Floren for "We are able” — hearkens back to the party's roots in the labor classes. Given the wide range of political ideologies that would have to be contained within the PSC, as well as its controversial frontman, it was not expected to get very far, and was largely discounted by most political scholars and theorists at the time of its founding.

That is not, however, what happened. Instead of becoming yet another minor party, one which would be reabsorbed back into the fold of the parties from which it sprung, the Som Capaços Party (frequently abbreviated as SomCa) instead found a firm foothold within the disaffected masses of Nuxica. In 2015, a mere two years after the party was founded, SomCa gained control of 30 percent of the seats within the parliament. It may not seem like much, but for the first election of a two year old political party, but it is unexpected. Likewise unexpected was the seizure of over 854 local government offices and council positions by the party. This sudden rise of SomCa appears to defy established political conventions; to explain why requires a brief lesson of Nuxican history and why the actions of the New Order regime still have a large impact on the modern-day Nuxican political process, as well as why the actions of the current regime have set SomCa party up to succeed electorally.

The New Order regime, and the Union of National Prosperity and Progress that it spawned in 1952 with the partial resumption of legislative abilities, retained power through an effective yet simple calculus. The simple fact of the matter is that Solarian Catholicism and the Solarian Catholic Church has been entwined within Nuxican culture and, indeed, the fabric of Nuxican society since the Asterian War of Secession. It was Father Alba Recasens, a Catholic priest, who first whipped the laboring masses into a patriotic frenzy with his evangelical rhetoric. The 1764 San Barzicia assembly, wherein the assemblymen voted to join in the Lorcanian rebellion as part of the United Colonies, was opened by the Lord's Prayer and a brief sermon on the Beatitudes. The signatories of the Writ of Dissolution were motivated by religious fervor just as much as much as republicanism or self-governance.

The soldiers who took part in the martial actions of the Christmas Revolution were, largely, Catholic; the revolution occurred with the direct backing of the national Catholic diocese, and Catholic militias known as the Sons of God were direct participants in the 'pacification campaigns' that followed the military action. Likewise, it was an alliance of Catholic Student unions at the University of Sant Picano, Carutagua University, and other post-secondary schools across the nation who led the Dahlia Revolution.

Religion is a crucial part of daily life, and can easily be used to mobilize mass movements within the country. Anyone who fails to recognize this risks being blindsided by a large constituency within the country. Thus it is no surprise that one of the largest groups that the Moderate National Workers' Party, who openly proclaim their secular atheism as a political platform, has largely lost the Catholic vote. It is also no surprise that the percentage of self-described 'active Solarian Catholics' participating in the voting process has dropped precipitously. This is where Som Capaços comes in.

Salvador Bassaganyes has openly stated his desire to implement policies "in line with our Catholic faith." Likewise, he is a self-described "traditionalist," a term that hearkens back to the New Order government and it's proto-functionalist leanings. This essentially amounts to the end of government secularization and the re-enshrinement of the Solarian Catholic Church as the official Church of the Republic of Nuxica, and the re-establishment of Solarian Catholicism as the official religion of the nation. This would also more than likely have an effect on the laws passed by Parliament, the priorities of the Ministry of Education, among many other changes. And the public is ready for this, as a 2018 study found that 65% of self-identified Solarian Catholic reported a desire to "make Solarian Catholicism more central to public life."

Labor is an area where Bassaganyes is making large inroads. This is largely due to the government's "acceptance of political realities," a term that many consider to mean an embrace of neoliberalism, and seeming abandonment of its social democratic values. Since the 2010 election of current Prime Minister Florencio Resende, the government has overseen policies that have increased inequality, seen many jobs and domestic markets vanish, and a decrease in public investment. The economy is growing, this is true, but if most of the population -- what essentially amounts to a precariat class -- has and is not seeing the benefits, then they will become dissatisfied. Given enough time, and the right political opportunity, they will seek to remove them. Given that, according to recent polling, the SomCa Party commands a solid third -- an in some cases second -- place ranking it would seem that Salvador Bassaganyes has given them that opportunity. Advocating for an expansion of welfare, wealth redistribution, investment in the public sector, an expansion of worker's rights, protectionism, and even many policies of environmentalism, the SomCa Party checks off all the boxes for many of today's workers.

SomCa is also positioning itself to be a home for what many political theorists simply call "new nationalism." Taking cues from domestic and international political organizations ranging from the defunct Nuxican League, to the Xiaodong Regeneration Society, the party as an organization loudly proclaims to be the party of "unapologetic Nuxicans." Hearkening back to the days of the New Order regime, Bassaganyes' positions include everything from a "revitalization of the military," to "protection of our economic interests," to "defending and reforming our systems of law and justice," "ensuring truth and virtue in the media," and even "bringing our government into the modern era." All flowery language and high ideals, as who could oppose such actions? But, as with the New Order regime, such magniloquence belies worrisome truths.

Some of SomCa's listed policies include: expanded powers for police and the National Republican Guard gendarmes to operate domestically, a clampdown on media organizations, an expansion of domestic terror and anti-rioting laws to potentially include demonstrators, the resumption of the death penalty, and an increase in government surveillance. It is wholly unsurprising for SomCa to campaign on such ideals; Nuxica is a nation that has dealt with a slow but definite upswing in cartel violence and murder since the end of the New Order regime. Cartels from Marirana routinely cross the border to ply their illicit wares, fueling spin-off branches and rival cartels — like Fills del Sud — and an increasingly violent gang war throughout many parts of the country. The current government’s seeming inability to contain the threat has many Nuxicans dissatisfied and seeking a resumption of law and order. While Bassaganyes has denied accusations of authoritarianism and many in the party have attempt to minimize it, the reality is that policies advocated for would essentially amount to a thinly-veiled resumption of the regime established by Gen. Juan Sebastián García via the Christmas Revolution. The difference being, of course, that this new government would be established via the ballot box -- and it seems incredibly likely that it may.

In the four years since its founding, the Som Capaços Party has seized control of several local positions of government, many of which were held in strongly Worker's Party or Conservative Union Party areas, and gained one-third of its seats. Though the election cycle has not begun, many pollsters have reported a sharp increase in support for the party which -- if carried through into the election -- could see SomCa at least becoming the second largest party within Parliament and the largest in the opposition. In such a position, the party would essentially gain control of the opposition and thus begin steering its collective actions against the government how it sees fit.

Yet the government seems wholly unaware of how precarious its situation really is, with many political operatives still considering the Conservative Union Party to be the biggest threat to the government within Parliament. Perhaps this would have been true in 2015, when Bassaganyes and the SomCa made their election debut, but it is not true anymore. The sooner the government realized this, and behaves accordingly, the better off they will be come 2020.

RWIZIKURU DEFEATS THE ORDENNYANS 3-0
Not enough to save the maVarvi, but the victory will inspire celebrations
Image
The Rwizikuran football team before departing for Piraea

Watida Muchena | 4 OCTOBER, 2019 18:26 | HERSONISSOS, PIRAEA

After the two defeats, with a 1-3 loss to the Yocatullic Wave Warriors, and a 1-4 loss to the Gaullican Crusaders, it has become increasingly obvious that the Rwizikuran maVarvi were eliminated from the Coupe du monde. This has made the recent victory over the Ordennyan side a breath of relief, when Rwizikuru scored 3-0, although this is not enough to save the maVarvi, who were mathematically eliminated after the defeat by Gaullica.

The match began, with the Ordennyans having the upper hand, with the Ordennyans attempting to score a goal at the eleven minute mark. However, this only awakened the fire in the maVarvi, with Tendeka Majange scoring a goal at the twenty-eight minute mark, giving the Rwizikurans an upper hand 1-0. At the fourty-second minute mark, Sikarudzi Croome scored a second goal, with the Rwizikuran maVarvi holding a 2-0 advantage by the end of the first half.

During the second half, the Ordennyans tried desperately to score against the maVarvi, with each attack against the Ordennyans was met with a fierce counterattack by the Ordennyans, and in response, the maVarvi stopped these attacks with substantial effectiveness. Att the eighty-seventh minute, Croome scored the third goal for Rwizikuru, which allowed Rwizikuru to finish the match 3-0 over the Ordennyans.

Following the match, manager Oswald Hallam told reporters that "we have finally redeemed ourselves. After having been mathematically eliminated, over the past week, the maVarvi have been training to try and give this their all. As a result of our efforts, we have managed to counter the assaults made by the Ordennyan national team, and therefore have won a single match."

Hallam said that "while we are disappointed that we will not be advancing into the Group of Sixteen, we are delighted to have made ourselves known, and that over the next four years, we fully intend to train the maVarvi into a fighting force, so we can break out of the group stages in the twentieth edition of the Coupe du monde."

"And God willing, we shall face the Nasanis in 2023," Hallam declared.

BREAKING: PRESIDENT ATWAN AL-TUGHLUQ HAS PASSED AWAY.

Image
Atwan al-Tughluq, a Colonel within the Communal Army,
during a Tsabaran independence day celebration during the days of the
Popular Communalist Regime.
Adunis, Adunis Province - President al-Tughluq, who had led the nation since his election as President in 2005, has passed away, a ministerial spokesman has confirmed. The news comes as a complete surprise to many in Tsabara, as just yesterday the President was seen in 'perfect health' delivering a speech to the nation in Adunis, whereby he congratulated the House of Representatives, the military and 'all the people of Tsabara' for their commitments to the 'basic tenants of civilisation and contract, the wondrous co-social state.'

The 83 year old President had a long and illustrious career in the service of both the Popular Communalist Regime, in which he rose to the rank of colonel within an incredibly secular army. His father, a noted rebel against Gaullican and Estmerish colonial rule, was one of the founders of the 'Desert Vipers', a unit of Badawiyan soldiery who joined up with Gaullican General Norbert Chapelle (known unaffectionally as 'The Last Functionalist') against the Estmerish colonial authorities post the Great War. It was this drive for independence and fighting spirit that his father instilled in him, al-Tughluq stated, on the campaign trail in 2004. "I am a fighter. My father was a fighter. Long have we fought to see a Tsabara that is true and filled with values; not the deranged plays of Euclean Imperialists. Nor the deranged mentality and anti-religious doctrine of the evil Popular Communalists."

Al-Tughluq's presence in Tsabaran politics was one of unrivaled stature. The second (and longest serving) democratically elected President of the Tsabaran Federation, al-Tughluq set the tone for the debates, laws and lives of the people in this country. Parroting the words of Gaullican monarchs, the President had once told President Lévesque of Gaullica that "l'etat c'est moi". No phrase better encapsulates the state of the country after 14 years of his presidency. Tughluq brought about a unity government that had bent to him for these fourteen years, only challenged by Nazim al-Qutayni, but a month ago over the fatal Sfira incident. And even this 'president destroying event' that the Euclean and Asterian medias proclaimed would bring about the downfall of the President, and perhaps escalate supposed infighting, was solved by 'Tsabara's Great Statesman' who announced that the negotiations with the military units in Sfira had 'concluded.' Indeed today saw the second wave of hostages released from the base, as per the negotiated terms between the government and the mutinous soldiers. Alongside opposition leader Aryeh Kahlon, head of the APP, he is seen as a key figure in the transition to democracy from the Communalist Regime.

Ministerial sources have not delved into the specifics of the death of the President, stating that the "official coroner's report" is underway. Speculation has suggested the president's cause of death ranges from a stroke, to a brain hemorrhage, a heart-attack and even some believing it was 'old age.' Skeptics and conspiracy theorists have already begun postulating that the President has been 'assassinated', with some arguing that the far-right of his coalition are behind his death. Many point to the radical Irfanic cleric Sheik Faizad Salah, once a supporter of the President, who recently called him a 'traitor' for negotiating with the soldiers in Sfira. Further still, elements of the right wing of the National Irfanic Party have blamed the supporters of the 'traitor' Nazim al-Qutayni, leader of the Party for Irfanic Democracy, who left the coalition earlier in September.

Nazim al-Qutayni has dismissed these claims as: "incredulous falsehoods" and "slander of the highest degree." He further added that "al-Tughluq was my friend. A mistaken friend, who did his best for this nation and came to his senses, it seems, just before he passed on."

A question remains on the lips of most Tsabarans: "what happens now?" The Constitution on this matter is ambiguous and unclear. In these times of crises, Yahya Al-Aboud, the Prime Minister, has declared to the House of Representatives that he will "assume both roles" as per constitutional tradition. Both Nazim al-Qutayni and Aryeh Kahlon have regarded this move as "one of a dictator" and have called on the Prime Minister to resign, saying the constitution "does not grant him that authority."

Al-Aboud has stressed it is "merely transitional." Yet his actions have left the possibility of a returning government majority close to nil, as al-Qutayni has already explicitly expressed "we shall not compromise with dictators" and refused to enter coalition talks until al-Aboud steps down from both of his roles.

Al-Aboud has not yet commented on this and has focused his commentary today on "the grief that the nation is feeling following the death of its beloved leader. We shall continue to do the noble work that the President set in motion, even if we must change the means and methods in which peace and stability will be achieved."

BREAKING 21 Centrist MPs expelled from Popular Council

Image
The Popular Council erupted into chaos after the announcement with "hardliners" condemning the
"centrists."
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- The Joint Commission for Political Stability has expelled a total of 21 MPs from the Popular Council, it follows the leaking of an email chain detailing the group’s intention to “reach out to Euclea independent of government to keep peaceful relations alive.”

In a shocking and fast-moving morning, the JCPS announced that it had expelled 21 MPs from the Popular Council, after the Dowlat newspaper published leaked emails indicating a plot to engage in private diplomacy.

In accordance to the law, Dowlat passed the email chain to the JCPS and the Union-government for investigation. By 10am Zahedan time, the JCPS had ruled to expel the 21 MPs tagged in the emails.

Their expulsion follows a similar move last week, when 6 “Centrist” MPs were expelled over comments made with regards to the southern protests.

The emails published by Dowlat indicated that the 21 agreed, “the government’s policy toward the Erekat situation and its failure to offer any kind of productive input on the Tsabaran crisis only fuels the dangers of our country’s isolation” said the opening email. The chain read that the 21 agreed to collaborate behind closed doors and reach out to Euclean governments privately and secretly. They seemingly hoped to conduct negotiations urging the EC and Estmere to hold off on isolating Zorasan in exchange for promises that the current “Principilist” government would be removed by the Popular Council.

The emails did not go into detail over how they would remove the Isfandiar-Akbari administration, nor, who they would negotiate with.

In a statement read out to this morning’s session of the Popular Council, the spokesman for the JCPS said, “in light of the publication by Dowlat, the Joint Commission was swift in its decision to expel the 21 MPs from their seats and this house immediately.” The spokesman further explained, “this action will be a clear message to any other member of this house, that the commission will not tolerate extra-political behaviour or antics, nor will it allow members to subvert the executive which is the sole diplomatic actor as certified by the constitution.”

The National Electoral Commission has confirmed the expulsions, but, interestingly has not confirmed dates of elections.

The lack of dates from the NEC has led many commentators to debate whether the union-government may call for a general election, with 27 members expelled within a week.

One government source indicated that the cabinet was pressuring First Minister Farzad Akbari to request the closure of the Popular Council for an election.

“There’s a serious push for an election now, the legislature can’t go on with Centrists and Reformists being expelled every week. Too much plotting is afoot” the source said.

Other rumours circulating around the Popular Council include a push by some Principilists to “tread the constitutional line” by rallying and organising fellow “hardliners” around a singular message for voters. According to some sources, this may well include the creation of a semi-formal political group. Such a move would violate the constitution’s ban on political groups.

According to one MP, at least 36 members of the right-wing caucus have met to discuss forming a group to coalesce around a unified message. Many of these MPs believe that Zorasan is entering a profound period of “danger”, with instability in Tsabara and an aggressive Euclean coalition. The same MP stated that the group would seek the support if not membership, of the State President and First Minister, alongside cabinet ministers.

The Popular Council has descended into outright chaos, as in wake of the announcement, Centrist MPs, alongside those of the Centre-Right openly accused the First Minister of orchestrating a “purge of people who dare say no.”

In his defence, the First Minister decried the accusations saying, “to say I plot and scheme against elected representatives is an insult as far as it is ridiculous. If members treated their duties with the respect they deserve, would any member be expelled?”

Prominent hardliner, Colonel Vahid Namdar also denounced the Centrists, “you get expelled because it is you, who scheme against our country. Let every Zorasani hear your hypocrisy and rejoice in the justice of your expulsion for treason.”

More as the story develops.

WESTBRÜCKEN, WERANIA - In a session in the Reichstag today the government has formally proposed legislation that substantially overhauls and streamlines the welfare system, Der Staatsmann reports.

Introducing three bills to the lower house tonight Social Affairs Minister Simas Nekrošius has stated that the bills - proposed as a "package" series of legalisation designed to be passed simultaneously - intend to "simplify the welfare system whilst increasing its reach in various areas and stripping it back especially for those who can work and refuse to work".

"The reforms will be designed to ensure that Werania does not slip into a high-welfare, high-tax, low wage economy and maintains its status as a low-welfare, low-tax and high wage economy. They will also reverse long-term demographic trends and underline our support for ordinary Weranian families."

The first of the bills aims to improve living conditions of large families as well as promote larger families in general. Under the new scheme - tentatively named the Family First Initiative - receive a tax-free benefit of €150 per month for the second and any consecutive children until they reach the age of 18. Families are also eligible to receive the benefit for their first child if the family income is under €200 per family member. The Family First Initiative will also apply to all children, not just those born after the introduction of the programme.

The second of the bills aim to combat welfare fraud with new regulations regarding the claiming of welfare payments. Provincial anti-fraud agencies will be placed under the national control of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment which will implement much tougher application processes to dissuade fraud. Those on unemployment or disability welfare will also be requiered to undergo a work capability test with those found capable to work to be placed on workfare programmes and their eligibility for non-work dependent welfare withdrawn. Such capability tests will have to be taken annually in order to continue to apply for welfare.

The third of the bills will remove much of the eligibility of non-EC citizens to apply for welfare with the requirement to apply for any kind of welfare for foreigners being raised from 2 years of work to 5 for non-married couples and 4 for married. Foreigners will also have to have a clean criminal record to apply for welfare and "appropriate" paperwork.

The proposals represent a win for the NKP and a loss for the DA, particularly Nekrošius who described the current welfare system in 2006 as "socialist nonsense" and has expressed a preference for privatising sections of the system. Nevertheless there is broad support for the second and third bills in particular whilst many socially conservative deputies in both parties have strongly pushed for the first bill which was credited as a popular NKP proposal in their election manifesto. Nevertheless Nekrošius has stated that delegating some of the new responsibilities the bills propose to the private sector.

The bills were criticised in the Volkstag by the opposition on various grounds. The Greens criticised the first bill on the grounds it was attempting "social engineering" and that its incentive structure could lead to less women in the workplace, whilst the Modern Centre Party questioned the cost of such a policy. The SRPO have also criticised the second and third bill for "having the possibility of removing millions of people off of vital welfare and impoverishing the country's poorest citizens.[/i]" Ruttish parties have also opposed moves to centralise the welfare system and move power away from the provinces.

Nevertheless preliminary polling suggests all three bills have broad public support. Voting for the bills will begin later in the week.

EUCLEAN GOVERNMENTS RAISE THE ALARM OVER UNEXPECTED DEATH OF TSABARAN PRESIDENT

Image
Relations between Tsabaran and the EC soured under al-Tughluq's as democracy was eroded.
Euclea - Following reports in the Tsabaran press about the sudden and unexpected passing of President Atwan al-Tughluq, a number of top Euclean officials have expressed concern about stability in the troubled Badawiyan nation and the threats facing its democratic institutions.

The 83 year old al-Tugluq has held the office since 2005 and has transformed Tsabara from a secular consociatial federation to what was effectively an Irfanic state. Throughout his tenure he eroded democracy, attacked the country's independent institutions, and ushered in an era of political Irfan, bringing new challenges to a nation built on secularism. His disregard for democracy and its institutions saw Tsabara suspended by the International Council for Democracy, with relations between the democratic world and Tsabara reaching their all time low.

In recent years, the Atudite population, which accounts for nearly one third of the nation's total population, has come under increasing scrutiny and repression by al-Tugluq and his allies. Over the past year a low-level insurgency by Atudite militias has launched, and recently an elite section of the Tsabaran armed forces seized one of the largest military installations in the country after al-Tugluq ordered the army be segregated on religious lines. The standoff lasted nearly a month, but after controversy within his own government and the exit of a key ally he changed course.

The unexpected death of Tsabara's longtime president marks the onset of a growing stage of uncertainty in a nation built around the persona of the so-called "Great Statesman". Conspiracy swirls around the nature of his death, with factions in the country pointing fingers at one another.

Prime Minister Yahya Al-Aboud has announced he plans to temporarily assume the powers of the presidency in addition to his current office. However, this has been criticized by rivals and key figures in Tsabaran politics.

The situation has been described as "deeply concerning" by EC President Alexis Walker. She has been a prominent critic of al-Tugluq and the erosion of democracy in Tsabara, but said that his death could result "in a power vacuum desperate to be filled" if the nation's democratic institutions were "not allowed to perform as designed".

"This is a deeply concerning matter, with a real potential for conflict. The worsening security in Tsabara over the past few months is testament to the volatility we could see".

The Euclean Community and Euclean governments have expressed their alarm over the situation, issuing calls for democracy to be upheld and urging the various factions in Tsabara to work together to prevent conflict.

Estmerish Foreign Secretary Anne Buckett echoed President Walker's sentiments, arguing that the issue of presidential succession"is the greatest threat currently facing Tsabara". The prime minister has gone further, however, warning that the power vacuum that was being created "could be easily filled by Zorasan and its puppets".

"We must remain vigilant, we must safe-guard democracy, and we must ensure that the rogue Zorasani regime does not place a stranglehold around a foreign nation" Reginald Wilton-Smyth said earlier today.

Sylvaine Lambert, the Gaullican Foreign Minister warned that "The Euclean Community, and the world, should be prepared for the fallout of this. We must support the institutions of Tsabaran democracy."

President Walker has announced she plans to hold a meeting of the EC's foreign ministers in Kesselbourg to discuss the situation and to coordinate efforts to "support and uphold the democratic institutions in Tsabara".

Military Deployed As Unrest and Disorder Continues

Two soldiers of the Ground Forces and a member of police patrolling a street in Kramatorsk.

Volosovo, Volosovo Autonomous Commune — As the general anti-government protests enter their 15th consecutive day, the People’s Commissar of Defence Vsevolod Uglichinin announced that the People’s Liberation Army Ground Forces would be deployed to “troublesome” areas in order to “enforce the peace.” Cities to be affected include the capital, Volosovo, Tagerty, Kramatorsk, Endirey, Gvizd, and Detinets.

The deployment of soldiers to major cities signals a change in government response to the protests, which has been uncharacteristically non-confrontational since the protests first started on the September 23rd.

Since the start of the protests on 23 September, an estimated 2,7 million people have continuously taken part and an estimated 5,9 million have participated in them in some capacity. The protests originated as a memorial vigil and commemorative walk for the 18th anniversary of the Kudelinskaya Square protests. As the crowd was moving to the square from the Admiral Tarnovetsky Park, unidentified participants began shouting anti-government slogans. In the following days, the protest grew to over a million people and similar anti-government protests sprung up in other major cities.

A partial crackdown on the protests were initiated on the 9th with key protest organisers Karl Menshchikov and Anastasia Perevyortova being arrested by the Committee for Civil Defence, and the government shutdown of mass media news organisations, the implementation of a nationwide firewall, and the shutdown of social media services for the foreseeable future.

Immediately following the arrests, an emergency session of the Trade Unions’ Congress convened. During the proceedings, the chief representatives of the VAS (public transport), ChPF (educators), ChSS (industrial workers), RRF (students), RJKZ (youth pioneers), and NDS (homemakers) announced they were withdrawing from the Trade Unions’ Congress. Additionally, the VAS, ChPF, and ChSS have issued a general strike until the political demands of the protests have been met.

A set of unified demands were released by Selena Yevtushenkova, a protest organiser and political refugee currently seeking asylum in Cassier, calling for the immediate resignation of Chairman of the Presidium of National Defence Zinoviy Kurdyashov, who has been in power since 1998, Co-Chairwoman of the PND Anninka Zhzhyonova, who was selected in 2009, Co-Premiers of the Trade Unions’ Congress Artemiy Garifullin and Aleksandra Andronikova, and Chairwoman of the Council of People’s Commissars Valka Pozharskaya.

Following the withdrawal of the VAS, ChPF, ChSS, RRF, RJKZ, and NDS, Co-Premiers Garifullin and Andronikova have both resigned. However new a new premier (or premiers should the chief candidate be male) cannot be elected until the dissenting workers’ unions return to the Trade Unions’ Congress. Another side effect of the premiers’ resignations is the suspension of the upcoming People’s Conference. The suspension means that a new legislative agenda cannot be formulated. Some analysts predict that this will lead to further unions withdrawing and a possible collapse of the Trade Unions’ Congress altogether.

Since the call of the general strike last Wednesday, public transport has been in near-complete shutdown in major cities across the country, schools have been closed nationwide, and many factories have been temporarily closed. Goals for the strike largely echo those laid out by the protesters, with an additional caveat of a reorganisation of seat allocation within the Trade Unions’ Congress to better reflect national membership of the dissenting unions.

The strikes and political gridlock have further hurt a recently struggling Chervolesian economy, as the debatable illegal closure of the Arucian Straits by Satucin on 11 September set in motion an economic decline. The combined issues have added fuel to the fire, as many are starting to feel the brunt of the closure. The Chairs of the Economic Planning Committee and People’s Commissar of Economic Affairs have both publicly criticised the government for its inaction in trying to curtail economic decay and the Economic Affairs Commissar went as far as to criticise the Foreign Affairs Commissariat for “playing tough” in the negotiations. People’s Commissar Amalia Cherepanova resigned shortly following her comments were made public.

CAN LES CROISÉS MAKE IT A FIFTH WORLD CUP VICTORY?
Gaullica entered the competition as the reigning World Champions, but can they maintain this prestigious position?

Verlois, Gaullica

'Les Croisés' have entered the Coupe de monde with a strong showing, yet perhaps one that was under-whelming to some fans. When they won in 2015, Roland Varne was held as a managerial hero; a legend and towering manager who led his team to concede no goals in a highly anticipated final against Estmere. The 2-0 victory that saw the Gaullicans add the fourth star to their medal left an impression that Varne's Crusaders would take the next cup by storm as well. The team was young and hopeful, proud and with honour to defend. Varne, a keen mind and stable thinker - not to crack under pressure.

But has is this reality, or a fantasy for the Gaullicans to have in the joint-held Coupe of this year? Indeed, the Crusaders have performed strongly against Rwizikuru and the Celestial Isles. Yet by all statistical accounts these matches were obvious victories. When it came to the only team within Group 7 that posed a semblance of a challenge for the champions, their attacks fell through, their defence circumnavigated and a measly equalised goal was all between that and defeat.

Four times have the Gaullicans won the Coupe de monde: 1951, 1971, 2003 (The Great Victory, as it was called, as Gaullica was the host) and as aforementioned, 2015. Each time with the exception of the last, similar arguments were made: the team was young and strong, potent and willing, with honour to defend. And no consecutive victory was achieved? Can Varne, who's successes across the Gaullican, Estmerish, Weranian and Etrurian leagues be up to snuff? And can the team, who easily breezed through 'simple competition', be ready to face off against a formidable coupe de monde winner in their own right?

The team believes it is ready. Varne has said numerous times, even here at exclusives with Le Monde, that this coupe is 'again for the taking.' He has stressed that the team is more than capable at achieving a consecutive world cup victory, "becoming historic giants, in a fifth victory for Gaullica. A testament to sporting prowess, fitness and health."

Gaullica will be up against Senria next. Tensions have the possibility of running high. Max Sartre, who's parents were both from Jindao (a Gaullican immigrant father and a Xiadongese woman), actively expressed disappointment in the failings of Xiadong at the cup. His comments were kept in check by the squad, but biases and expectations were there. Already fears have arisen that his playing could heighten tensions between the two groups, or even Gaullica and Senria.

But, perhaps not everything is so bleak. Why cannot this be the team to do what its forebearers have been unable? The captain, Giroud, is a renowned player. Evidenced from not just his conduct, but his style, he is a captain perhaps like none other. And his squad is strong. No substantial injuries have been met by the players yet. All have been well behaved under the ever-watching eye of Roland Varne. Perhaps this time is the time we shall be consecutive winners, after all?

And if not, perhaps the mentality of some interviewed fans is the best to take: "As long as Estmere and Etruria don't win, we've won!" But that's not really true sportsmanship, is it?

Internal security forces were deployed as protesters and police clashed.

Volosovo, Volosovo Autonomous Commune — The protests which have been gripping the country for nearly two and a half weeks have come to climax as reports of armed clashes between protesters and security forces have begun to come in.

Reportedly, the detaining of two students is the catalyst for the violence. At 11.37, two students made an attempt to enter a television station in order to broadcast the demands of the protests when they were arrested by the internal security forces stationed at the building. The remaining protesters gathered around the building demanded the release of the students, where they were subsequently fired upon by the guards, killing two and wounding several others. The protesters around the building responded by storming the building.

As news of the actions of the security forces spread, clashes quickly broke out . Eventually, internal security forces were pushed out by a mixture of local law enforcement, protesters, and military defectors. By 18.00, the entirety of Kudelinskaya Square and the surrounding downtown district was firmly under insurgent control, with barricades erected along the streets into the area.

Fighting and other acts of violence have reportedly spread throughout the city, with the insurgents gaining control of several of the city’s districts. Across the rest of the country, other insurgencies have sprung up in other cities, while in the countryside, People’s Defence Units have overthrown communal governments.

While military units were deployed to cities to quell the protests just two days ago, there have been no reports of military units actively engaging insurgents. In fact, many of the units deployed seem to be unsure whether to engage the insurgents or to openly support them. Fighting between military units and insurgents are believed, so far, to be purely for self-defence.

More as the story develops.

Masalina-Mravinskaya has remained popular with the public for her welfare
and social reforms enacted during her tenure as Commissar from 2015-2017

Volosovo, Chervolesia — In the early hours of Friday, revolutionaries liberated the Trade Unions’ Congress building from the reactionary forces of the Kurdyashov regime.

At 06.30, a mass of unarmed revolutionaries gathered outside the Trade Unions’ Congress building under the belief that prisoners from the protests where temporarily being held there. Without warning, State Protection Authority personnel guarding the building opened fire on the peaceful protesters, wounding seven. Armed revolutionaries and military personnel returned fire. After a brief firefight that left eight dead and 17 wounded, OGZ personnel withdrew from the vicinity.

The attacks and subsequent capture of the Trade Unions’ Congress have caused a near total collapse of the illegal and illegitimate Kurdyashov regime. It is believed that the former Chairman Zinoviy Kurdyashov, Chairwoman Anninka Zhzhyonova, and former Technical Secretary Valka Pozharskaya have fled the country. All three were amongst those called to resign when the protests first started on 20 September. Remaining members of the government, namely the remaining sitting Sovnarkom members, have resigned.

Despite the capture of the building by revolutions, the Trade Unions’ Congress held a second emergency session. In an unexpected move, the representatives of the VAS, ChPF, ChSS, RRF, RJKZ, and NDS, which had all formally withdrawn from the TUC on 7 October, were present. One of the first matters handled during the proceedings was the election of a new premier. Former Co-Premiers Artemiy Garifullin and Aleksandra Andronikova had resigned on 7 October. Following a quick deliberation, Nikolay Lebedintsev, a member of the National Farmers’ Union, was elected, with Sofya Petrashevskaya, chief representative of the Chervolesian Teachers’ Federation, selected as Co-Premier.

Under the guidance of the newly elected premiers, a new Council of People’s Commissars was created, and former People’s Commissar of Social Welfare, and chief representative of the Agricultural and Rural Enterprises Alliance, Vasilissa Masalina-Mravinskaya was chosen as Technical Secretary to resounding applause from the Congress.

Masalina-Mravinskaya served as People’s Commissar of Social Welfare from 2015-2017. During her tenure, she enacted multiple reform policies including a restructuring of the country’s welfare programme, modernisation programmes for communal canteens, laundromats, and creches, and policies to communalise household management as a method to compensate for traditional housework. She was dismissed from the Sovnarkom by former Technical Secretary Pozharskaya and subsequently arrested for promoting capitalism and counter-revolutionary activities. She was released from a work camp in early 2019 in order to appease political protests occurring at the time.

In a speech to the congress, Masalina-Mravinskaya declared the deposing of the Kurdyashov regime as a “victory of the hard working, socialist Chervolesian people over the national functionalist, reactionary, counter revolutionary forces of the Kurdyashov government.”

“This is a great national and democratic victory,” Masalina-Mravinskaya said to resounding applause from the assembled delegates.

“Once more the patriotic forces of socialism have triumphed over national functionalism and reactionaryism. The Kurdyashov regime long abandoned the ideals of socialism, instead preferring to enrich themselves at the expense of the honest workers of Chervolesia. This was not a counter-revolution, but a fight to end bureaucratic despotism, a fight to restore the principles of democracy and socialism, and a fight that the honest Chervolesian revolutionary workers and peasants won.”

After her speech, the technical secretary formally denounced former Chairman Kurdyashov, Chairwoman Zhzhyonova, and Technical Secretary Pozharskaya; declared the dissolution of “the national functionalist” Presidium of National Defence; formally acknowledged that the uprising was not counter-revolutionary in its nature, but was a “third revolution.”

Despite a new government, uncertainty still grips the nation. The forces of the People’s Liberation Army still remain divided and indecisive. Over the last 24 hours, units that had been originally deployed to quell the protests have either withdrawn entirely from the capital, or have joined the revolutionaries. Elsewhere in the country, reports of clashes between People’s Liberation Army Ground Forces units and People’s Defence Units continue to pour in.

Internationally, the country is still in the midst of crisis that appears to be drawing closer and closer to war. The Arucian Straits remain closed to all inbound and outbound Chervolesian shipping. It will remain to be seen whether the new Masalina-Mravinskaya government will return to the negotiating table with Satucin over the return of Mistral captain and first mate. Few, if any, of the protests demanded the two Satucine citizens be released, and many citizens continue to believe the Kurdyashov regime narrative that the Mistral was a Satucine spy vessel. While it may not be the “will of the people,” the continued economic hardship over the straits’ closure may yet force Chervolesia back to the negotiating table.

Zhenya addressed Jindanese press after his diplomatic visit to Rongzhuo.

"Compromise" reached between Jindanese and Xiaodongese governments
Zhenya: "We hope the agreement reaches a satisfactory end for all parties."
Liu Mei reporting from Yanglin, Jindao
October 14, 2019

A compromise has been reached by the governments of Xiaodong and Jindao after Chief Secretary of Jindao Guo Zhenya met Xiaodongese Premier Yuan Xiannan in Rongzhuo.

The so-called "compromise" - as it has been referred to by both parties of the agreement - will see two arrested criminals who originally faced extradition to their home country of Mathrabumi for vandalising the country's embassy back in July will instead be extradited to Xiaodong, granted Xiaodongese citizenship and tried under the Xiaodongese law system.

The two criminals, now named and identified as 33-year-old Akash Gadhe and 29-year-old Shantanu Ekbote, were predicted to face the death penalty if the extradition to their country was successful, but citizens of Jindao took to the streets to protest what they saw as a corrupt and inhumane move by the government of Guo Zhenya, the country's Chief Secretary. The protests continued to snowball into a general anti-Xiaodongese, pro-democratic protest, with some of the organised demonstrations being the largest in history.

On August 12, Zhenya's government officially put the extradition on hold while the protests were dealt with. Since then, the likes of Senria and Estmere, among others, have come out in full support for the Jindanese protesters and their goals, with Senrian Minister of Rites Yumi Takamatu urging Jindanese authorities to "respect to the sacrosanct right to protest".

Since the protests began on July 7, 8 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in instances ranging from civilian violence to tramplings. New Anandpu Avenue in the centre of Shilou has been closed for a majority of the duration of the protests, posing a significant delay to travel around the island's most populated district.

Human rights activists across the world have criticised the move by Zhenya, labelling it akin to "sweeping the problem under the rug" - as one Jindanese writer put - as the criminals are likely to face life imprisonment with slim chance of parole in Xiaodong for their crimes. Some of the largest demonstrations since the start of the protests are predicting to emerge as a result of this agreement, with a petition online garnering over 3 million signatures worldwide calling for the release of the criminals, and a scheduled demonstration on New Anandpu Avenue expected to attract over a million demonstrators - almost a sixth of Jindao's total population.

As a result of the protests, Jindanese independence statistics have changed, with around 43% staying they would support Jindanese independence, a further 50% expressing their intent to remain a part of Xiaodong, with 7% saying they didn't know.

Verlois, Gaullica

As a subcontinent, Bahia is rarely viewed in a positive light. Despite the best efforts of Habasha, it has never been much of a home for democracy or any of the freedoms we Eucleans take for granted. Located in the Northwest of Coius, the region has historically been a fertile growing point for radical ideologies, and while the leftist threat has diminished in recent years the rise of Zorasan and fundamentalist Irfan has cast an ever-growing shadow. It is also a key battleground between the diametrically opposed power blocs of the Rongzhou Strategic Protocol Organisation of the UZIR and Xiaodong and Senria's Council for Mutual Security and Development. Within this storm, there is one nation that seems determined to dance to its own peculiar drum beat. For this article, Le Monde was granted unprecedented access into the nation of contradictions that is Kaiye Tourie.

"The man who gives his mind's reason to ideology is the man who gives his wife to another man", the billboard that overlooked the graceful former colonial market square out the window our hotel in Urafaada loudly proclaimed. This would prove to be emblematic of our time here, with the irony of ideological mantras proclaiming a death to ideology clearly lost upon the regime of one of the world's more repressive nations. Such symbolism and slogans were our first taste of the sheer control of all political expression that would come to characterise the visit.

When analyzing the modern Kaiye Tourienne state, it pays to look at the past. A Gaullican colony transferred to Werania after the war, Kaiye Tourie's independence was achieved by force of arms as much as by the general anti-colonial trend and for several years was ruled by a highly fragile socialist regime. This regime was never able to unite the people behind it, and in 1960 a group of military officers seized power. They were led by Ardachire Touré, a pragmatic and charismatic leader who soon emerged as the head of the new junta. He was determined to eradicate the violence in the streets, which he saw as being the result of extremism and political freedoms. So, doing what any leader would do in the situation, he cracked down. Hard. All political parties were outlawed, as well as all religious groups and unions. His power secured, he began to rebuild Kaiye Tourie as a state "without political divisions". Borrowing from the Rwizikuru model, he instituted a one-party state with strong personal powers for himself. However, he resisted the temptation to go down a socialist or neo-liberal route, and instead embarked Kaiye Tourie on one of the most unique political experiments in the world. He called this new movement "Ngiilism", from the Albori word "Ngiili" meaning "middle".

What is Ngiilism? According to our group's representative from the Rassemblement of the Pan-Bahian Centre (RPBC - the sole legal political party in Kaiye Tourie), it could be described as "The absence of ideology, and the sheer will of a people to come together and pragmatically solve their problems according to the available means". To anyone else, it is best summed up as a strange cocktail of Authoritarianism, Radical Centrism, Pan-Bahian Nationalism, Secularism and even elements of Traditionalism or Communalism, especially on the local level. This materialises into a foreign policy of strict neutrality (Kaiye Tourie took no side in the Nasana-Rwizikuru war, and maintains friendly relations with both the IFDS and COMSED) and a nominal commitment to Bahian unity (though this is strained by distrust for other Bahian nations), a mixed economy with foreign investment and welfare systems (as well as endemic Bahian corruption), and a highly repressed political system at any level above the village level.

In many ways, the experiment could be considered a success. After nearly 60 years, the Ngiilist regime is still in power and has been able to survive without much reform of its core ideological principles (if they can be called as such, the regime would deny it fervently). The economy, while in no means thriving, is one of the strongest in the region and its welfare system in the more developed urban areas is impressive. Despite its ethnic and religious diversity, the state has managed to stay in one piece. Even the neutrality has stayed on board despite the pressures of recent years.

When we spoke to people, both on camera as part of our official reportage and also in as many unofficial contexts as we could, the message was more or less clear. When asked about their thoughts on the political repression, the Kaiye Tourien people simply didn't care. A young farmer named Bobo Unama, when asked by our team whether he would prefer to live in a Euclean state where he would have political freedom, replied that "In Gaullica, everyone is always 'Conservatives this, Social Democrats that'. I have no interest in these games. I just want to grill and live my life. I like it here, where I do not need to worry about things. I am free from your worries and struggles." Indeed, it seemed that while there were the occasional grumbles about policies or shortages of food, the only criticisms of the system itself that we got were from the more westernised and educated young people within Urafaada. As one of these men, who requested his name be left out from fears he would be tracked down, said, The Kaiye Tourien people are cowards. They have no spine to demand to be treated like men, and so they are content to live their lives free from questioning the chains on their ankles. Thinking for yourself is too scary for these people."

Authoritarianism is not a hidden secret here. When we talked to Urafaada Mayor and RPBC stalwart Dorémi Fasollasi, he was quick to justify the virtual lack of press freedom. "If you give the Maarimiong (a local mythological creature, which is said to lead children astray at night and eat them) a horn, he will call many to his destruction. If the village elders keep the horn, it will be them who do the calling." He laughed when we said that if Ngiilism was the way to safety then the people would see this, even if the opposition got to voice critiques, batting this off by saying that "Here in Kaiye Tourie we live in a society that is very paternal. We listen to what we are told."

Is there hope for democracy in Kaiye Tourie? From what we saw, it seems unlikely. The people are just too apathetic to seek to radically overthrow their regime. Is the Ngiilist model a success story? This is harder to answer. While it cannot be hailed as anything of a free society, the regime's claims to progress are justified. Indeed, with the rise of nations actively hostile to Euclea embodied by Zorasan and Xiaodong, perhaps the best we can hope for is for a populace which just doesn't care.

Le Monde's new programme, "Kaiye Tourie, inside the enigma" will be available from the 18th on our website.

IFF RULES FOR SARTRE TO BE SUSPENDED FOR A GAME
The ruling body of football have suspended Max Sartre for a game, threatening a second if he does not apologise for his 'inciting gestures.'

Gaullica's star striker and knight in shining armour for 'Les Croisés', Max Sartre, has been suspended from the upcoming Coupe match against Narozalica, the team has announced. The suspension comes after a 3-1 victory against Senria, where Sartre celebrated each goal of his hat-trick with a salute famously used by the Xiaodongese military. Xiaodong itself was eliminated during the group stages of the Coupe, in part due to Senria.
Mr. Sartre's parents both hailed from Jindao. His father, the son of a Gaullican port authority, and his mother a local Xiaodongese civilian. He described himself as 'a Gaullican from Jindao' in an earlier controversial statement, whereby he also confirmed he could speak Xiaodongese.

The salute in question is famed for its use by the Xiaodongese military. It features an enclosed fist against an open palm. Xiaodong was a member of the Entente during the Great War, and fought Senria in the Southern Coian theatre. Xiaodong also committed genocide against Senrians in occupied territory, due to government plans of ethnic colonisation.

Roland Varne, manager of 'Les Croisés' announced his 'embarrassment' at the way the goals were celebrated. He quickly reprimanded the striker after the match, it was reported, yet he faced some level of criticism for not substituting him earlier in the game. "I was caught up in the thrill of the game" the manager admitted.

A spokesperson for the IFF addressed the issue, stating that: "offensive gestures and celebrations have no place in football." She highlighted that the conduct was "distressing and insensitive to the Senrian fans, who had come to watch the game against a skilled team." She would add that "the IFF has reached the decision for a one-game suspension. We highlight the critical time this has been placed. And furthermore, if Mr. Sartre does not apologise for his remarks we are entertaining a second-game suspension, or perhaps even a suspension from all remaining games in the Coupe if Gaullica get that far."

We were able to interview several Senrian fans during their leaving of the stadium, and one man summed up a feeling that many held: "We expected conduct like this from Xiaodong. Not from Gaullica."

Gaullican fans, conversely, have come from all approaches to the issue. Many, we found particularly those watching at home, were more in favour of the IFF ruling. Several online polls conducted by us revealed that the average home-watcher felt 'it was a disappointing thing to see done in a professional game, by a professional player.' However, fans who travelled to Gibany and Piraea were more defensive. They copied the statements Mr. Sartre had given, that he had a 'right to celebrate' how he liked.

Roland Varne has urged his striker to "apologise", highlighting that following a victory over Narozalica he, the team and Gaullica would need "every able player." Captain Giroud issued similar statements, describing the conduct as "not football" and reiterating the need for a "team united in what makes the game great. That means no racism, sexism or insensitivity to the fans." He would add that footballers were "role models across the world."

As of now, Mr. Sartre has refused to comment on his suspension or whether or not he will indeed apologise for his remarks. His only tweet since the ruling was announced was wishing his teammates a "good game" for their upcoming match against Narozalica. At the moment it is unknown what the verdict of the game will be, and if Mr. Sartre will be blamed for a hypothetical loss against their opponents.

This is not the only instance during the Coupe so far that the IFF has had to have gotten involved in. Earlier during the Coupe, Amathian fans rioted after a loss against Caldia - prompting the IFF to launch an inquiry into their conduct and reprimand the team.

LEAKED WHISTLEBLOWER REPORT ACCUSES LLC AND GOVERNMENT OF 'FALSIFICATION OF RECORDS' REGARDING IGNACI MAICAS BRIDGE REPAIRS

CEO of construction firm Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company, Raimon Sangres I Prudencià.

LISTEN TO THIS STORY 4:42

A whistleblower's statement, reportedly from an employee within the Ministry of Commerce, has surfaced and been delivered to investigative reporters for El Defensor. The statement alleges "gross and flagrant misconduct and corruption" by both mid-and-high level officials within the Moderate National Worker's Party, as well as executives within the Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company construction firm. Additionally, the statement claims that attempts to bring the allegations to light with the Inspector General's Office have been "illegally terminated."

According to the report, Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company has been involved in an act of corruption and collusion with members of the government in the wake of the September 25th bridge collapse in an attempt to cover up misconduct and wrongdoing committed during the 2017 repairs and renovations to the Ignaci Maicas Memorial Bridge in the city of Macusrida.

Per the leaked report, "workers and executives with Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company, along with incumbent government officials, engaged in a precise and deliberate falsification of records over the type, standards, and quality of work done on the Ignaci Maicas Bridge in 2017. Such actions, while not only being highly illegal on their face, also violate government policies on record-keeping and constitute direct collusion with Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company in order to ensure that neither party face wrongdoing for their actions."

The report goes on to state that "in addition to violating national law by falsifying required records, the Inspector General of the Ministry of Commerce has also violated national law by refusing to investigate the allegations presented. Numerous prior attempts to bring the misconduct to light have been suppressed by the Inspector General by preventing access to relevant documents, burying investigative efforts in bureaucratic red tape, and by overall attempting to ensure that the truth not be brought to the people."

The Ignaci Maicas Memorial Bridge was a primary thoroughfare into the industrial city of Macusrida, constructed in 1910 as part of a public works project prior to the global economic depression that same year. The bridge saw damage during both the Nuxican Revolution and the Great War, being repaired in 1950 as well as 1972. The bridge most recently saw repairs done in 2017, when the construction firm Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company won a government contract to renovate and repair the bridge. Since its collapse many citizens, both within the city of Macusrida as well as nationwide, have called into question the quality of the repairs conducted.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, when asked for comment by El Defensor, stated that "the government will not comment on such baseless allegations, printed by a 'yellow-journalist' outfit." The Ministry of Justice, when asked for comment and whether or not they would open an investigation into the matter stated that such options "were not being considered at this time."

1313 Girona Street declined requests for comment.

Members of the Opposition have been vocal over this issue, with Som Capaços Party leader Salvador Bassaganyes calling for a "full and complete investigation into this matter. There are allegations that the government is violating the law in order to cover up for a company's misdeeds. If true, this would mark the most serious political scandal in Nuxican history since the resumption of national democracy. "

Conservative Union Party MP and Leader of the Opposition Julià Sendarrubias was similarly concerned, saying that "the allegations, if true, are damning to the current government. Given the circumstances of the bridge collapse and the unfortunate loss of life it is only right to look into them."

The CEO of Lleixà, Casamitjana, and Company, Raimon Sangres I Prudencià, has denied the allegations as "false and untrue." Echoing a statement given by a company spokesperson in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Sangres declared that "the company's long history of producing good works efficiently speaks, and will speak, for itself."

He declined to comment on whether or not his company would comply with an investigation by either the Ministry of Justice or Parliament, should one be launched.

More on this story as it develops.

AMATHIA BANNED FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL CONTESTS OVER FAN VIOLENCE, IFF WARNS ANY VIOLENCE IS 'UNACCEPTABLE'

Image
The IFF says it is taking fan violence "very seriously".
Alikianos, Piraea - The International Football Federation (IFF) has announced that the Amathian National Football Team will be barred from participating in all international football competitions "indefinitely". The ruling follows a comprehensive review conducted by the IFF and authorities in Piraea following the outbreak of fan violence after Amathia's defeat by Caldia on 28 September.

A spokesperson for the IFF said violence would "never be tolerated in football" and promised the organization was committed to ensuring "matches could go by without incident".

Caldia beat Amathia 3-0 at Alikianos' Independence Stadium. After the loss, violence broke out and a large group of Amathian fans invaded the pitch. Fans tried to overrun security in order to attack the Caldish team, and were intercepted by Amathia's own footballers, some of which were injured. In the stands, Amathian ultras attempted to attack Caldish fans before a crackdown by security. Outside of the stadium, the main groups of Amathian ultras began a riot, causing significant damages to buildings and automobiles nearby. They also began to attack other fans and Piraean law enforcement. Riot police, which had been on call, ended up suppressing them with tear gas and rubber bullets. Hundreds were arrested, charged, and deported from Piraea.

The incident caused an international incident, with both the Caldish and Piraean governments petition the IFF to launch an investigation into the incident. The Amathian government has apologized for the incident and has promised action within its national football association.

Amathia is also being sanctioned by the IFF for racist abuse Caldish centre-forward Yahli Benayoun faced throughout the match. The Amathian football association will have to pay €50,000 in fines. The team is banned from international football until further notice. "Once [the Amathian association] gets its house in order, a conversation between the IFF and Amathia can begin regarding their return to international matches" the IFF spokesperson said.

Looking to prevent further violence, the IFF said it is taking any threats "very seriously" and has warned teams that they face disqualification and bans should their fans act violently following the result of a match.

"Such behavior is entirely unacceptable, it will not be permitted".

Piraean and Gibish authorities have promised to keep peace and protect players, staff, fans, and residents. Police in Alikianos will be on high alert tonight as Etruria faces off with Gibany at Independence Stadium. There are concerns regarding violence from Etrurian ultras, who are well organized and had to travel only a short distance to attend to match. A spokesperson for the Piraean Ministry for Internal Affairs sought to reassure the public, warning that police were on "high alert".

Al-Aboud calls for arrest of Nazim al-Qutayni and dissolution of PID, claiming ties to 'Lions' terrorist group.

Image
Nazim, a vocal critic of the President-Prime Minister, has not been in the capital since Wednesday.
Adunis, Adunis Province - President and Prime Minister Yahya al-Aboud has called for the arrest of opponent Nazim al-Qutayni and the dissolution of the Party for Irfanic Democracy, citing allegations of collaboration with terrorists in an attempt to 'undermine the authority of the elected Tsabaran government.'

Al-Qutayni, who left the Movement for National Rejuvenation over disagreements with the President and a 'circumnavigation of [his] authority' continued his criticism of Tughluq's successor, President al-Aboud. He referred to him as a "constitutional usurper" with "no authority" and declared him to his supporters to be a "fanatic who has dreamt of power and naught-else." Within the session of the House in which al-Aboud declared himself Tughluq's successor as per the constitution - a fact not accepted by any of the opposition parties - Nazim argued that he was "spineless, a puppet of Zahedan and a traitor', adding that his approach to Sfira 'would undo the great works of rapprochement done by the President."

Al-Aboud fired back, arguing that his belief in continued negotiations with the 'terrorists at Sfira' meant an undermining of the authority of the elected government of Adunis. He called al-Qutayni a "man with terrorist sympathies", adding "that is why he resigned." Members of the PID were then escorted out from the House of Representatives after one threw his podium at the Prime Minister.

The hardline against the Sfira mutineers by the government has caused concern across all forms of political, military and civilian life in the Federation. Numerous citizens have expressed concern to their news stations, with several thousand tweeting, texting and phoning 'Le Fédéraliste' to make their voices heard. One user, who wishes to remain anonymous, texted us stating that: "I live in Qaa, and I can hear the gunfire. The shelling. The explosions. The negotiations are over, it is back to fighting now."

Another said: "I fear Sfira will now only be the beginning."

Aryeh Kahlon, leader of the APP, tweeted that "the actions of this farcical government have left many Atudites with little choice. It is now a fight for the right to exist in our country, against a tyrant worse than we feared al-Tughluq could ever be."

The arrest warrant issued for Nazim al-Qutayni has been unsuccessful. The party leader and now symbol of resistance against the government has not been seen in the capital since Wednesday morning. It is speculated he has fled to friendlier territory. He did tweet, however, that "I will not comply with the directives and arrest warrants of a traitor. Let Zorasan come try to arrest me, you filth, for Tsabara is at my side."

Radical Irfanic Cleric Sheik Salah has called on for Nazim to "face justice for his crimes against the Federation." This sentiment has been echoed by many of his followers.

However, noted police chiefs who served under Nazim al-Qutayni during his tenure as the Interior Minister have been stubborn in accepting the orders from the government. One chief belayed the order, apparently granting time for the wanted-man to escape to his safe-zone.

With the increased turmoil across the Federation in reaction to the President-Prime Ministers new approaches to his inherited situations, it is yet unknown if he will be successful in reigning what he called 'troublesome politicians' who have been branded as terrorists. It is also yet unknown where Nazim has disappeared to: if a domestic safe-zone or an international one, none know but he and his close-confidants.

Sheik Salah warns of "plots and schemes" against the government in wake of Al-Qutayni arrest warrant

Image
Sheik Faizan Salah addressing members of the League of the Righteous.
Sidi Amar, Juraynah Province - Sheik Faizan Salah has addressed thousands of supporters in Sidi Amar, where he called on “pious and patriotic citizens” to “hunt down and apprehend the traitor Al-Qutayni.” The popular cleric also denounced the national legislature as a “hindrance to the salvation of Tsabara from the evils and violence of the Lions and Atudite terrorism.”

Addressing supporters in his hometown of Sidi Amar in Juraynah province, the cleric and leader of the League of the Righteous, was stark in his warning, “we are approaching the crossroads, where the breakthrough to ensuring equality, freedom and dignity of all Badawiyans, or the traitors and their Atudite terrorist allies defeat us and consign us to oppression and dispossession.”

He also warned that the government under Yahya Aboud was facing “coordinated forces designed to bring down Tsabara and restore the racist past.” He said further, “the traitors under that Atudite puppet al-Qutayni are working with the Atudite extremists and their Euclean masters to undermine the progress made by our president. Who they killed!”

Since the sudden death of President Atwan al-Tughluq two-weeks ago, the hardliners of the Irfanic Coalition have rallied around Sheik Salah, who was swift to blame both moderates led by Nazim Al-Qutayni and the Atudites for his death. Social media accounts tied to the League of the Righteous have been circulating conspiracy theories and fact-checked lies that President al-Tughluq was eager to avoid granting further concessions, only then to be assassinated by Atudites with moderate support.

In his speech, Sheik Salah further said, “they killed him because the Atudites want to enslave us Badawiyans and pious Irfani, the traitors killed him because al-Qutayni wants power and to sell our soil and labour to the Eucleans. We must resist their plots and schemes; we must be strong and resist” receiving loud cheers from the crowd.

The cleric also reaffirmed his personal and the LR’s support for Yahya Aboud who currently holds both offices of Prime Minister and President, a controversial move that has recently escalated political tensions.

“I offer my personal support and trust in brother Aboud, who has been bold in his actions and rhetoric. I am certain that all brothers and sisters of the League back our leader as he confronts the enemies of Tsabara and progress. Because if he stands alone, we will all be cast down and oppressed” he said.

Sheik Salah emerged as a popular and influential political force in 2014 when and several other mid-ranking clerics formed the League of the Righteous, a colossal charitable organisation that runs soup kitchens, shelters, donation runs, medical care for the poorest and a series of clubs and societies. The LR’s ties to Bonyads in Zorasan has been a source of criticism, especially in 2017 when it was revealed that the LR receives funding from the Imam Ardashir Bonyad for the Dispossessed; a large body with close ties to the Zorasani military.

In 2016, President al-Tughluq formally aligned himself and his National Irfanic Party to the LR, hoping to use its vast network for votes and campaigning. In exchange, the president is believed to have made the push for his more controversial laws rolling back Atudite and minority rights. Many within the Party for Irfanic Democracy, and Nazim al-Qutayni, reportedly found Sheik Salah’s influence over the late president “disturbing.” At least 28 MPs of the NIP are also members of the LR, most of whom constitute the core hardliner faction.

The government’s arrest warrant for Nazim al-Qutayni has escalated the political crisis to all new heights, while unconfirmed reports that pro-government elements of the military are distributing weapons to the League of the Righteous have further enflamed tensions.

The LR dismissed reports of its members being armed or trained by the military as “Eucleo-Atudite propaganda aimed at dividing and destroying our country.”

ABSTERGO INDUSTRIES FOUND GUILTY OF ILLEGALLY DUMPING CHEMICALS FROM OPERATIONS AT PROCESSING REFINERY

Image
Abstergo's illegal dumping operations have caused an estimated £230 million in damages to indigenous lands.
Draynor, Harwich - Petroleum conglomerate Abstergo Industries has been founded guilty of illegally dumping harmful, cancer causing chemicals throughout indigenous lands located in Northern Harwich by the Federal Court of Appeals for Harwich. The multi-billion dollar company, the largest petroleum producer in Sublustria, has faced harsh criticism in the past for ignoring federal regulations concerning pollution and is infamous for its often blatant disregard for indigenous rights.

The Harwich Appeals Court has ordered that Abstergo is to pay a fine of nearly £200 million, as well as disbursements of an estimated £230 million for damages inflicted to indigenous lands as well as to cover the numerous health costs for the thousands who are effected by their illegal activities. According to sources close to the trial, Abstergo has reportedly been dumping fracking waste and dangerous chemicals illegally since 2011. A majority of the waste originates from Abstergo's Draynor petrol refinery, the largest of its kind in Sublustria and the Asterias.

Lake Tōtaranui, once a popular tourist destination and championed as one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, is now a toxic mass of black sludge and chemicals. Maru Nihoniho, a local resident from Miller's Town just 6 miles away from Lake Tōtaranui, described the court's ruling as "an immense relief." While the injustice and destruction wrought by Abstergo will take years to undo, Nihoniho said it was "sobering" to finally see the corporation brought to justice. She continued, adding that "similar injustices still occur across this country and we must continue to make them right."

The human impact of Abstergo's policies has added also fuel to the fire, with hundreds of local residents reporting increased illnesses, chronic diseases, cancer, and other health issues. Medical records and investigations by the Department of the Environment and Ecological Conservation have found that in some cases entire families have all developed cancer. One such family, the Arahanga's, have been financially ruined by medical debt and hospital visits as a result of the family's poor health.

Women in the local area have also reported increasing infertility problems. Several babies born at St. Helen's Hospital in Miller's Town in recent years possessed a host of health issues, including being born underweight, as well as respiratory and heart complications. Despite a growing list of local accounts and evidence, Abstergo maintains that it was not aware the chemicals were "dangerously toxic," an argument upheld in court by Abstergo's chief lawyer, Dennis Orton.

Abstergo CEO Walter Hendrickson released a short statement responding to the court's ruling, stating that Abstergo was "disappointed" with the results but was a "responsible corporate citizen" and will pay its dues "as is expected of us." He issued a brief apology to those effected, "Abstergo is deeply sorry for the distress and damage that it has inflicted on so many innocent people."

Abstergo's actions have placed an intense spotlight on similar industries, especially influential mining businesses, as indigenous right's activists have begun to organize protests and demand action by Parliament. Opposition leader Gaultier Babineaux called the scandal a "complete disgrace," promising to focus more of the VFL's energy on "promoting the rights of indigenous people's throughout the country." Despite this pledge Babineaux has found himself also in the spotlight of criticism.

The Arateran Right's Association (ARA) recently lambasted the previous VFL government for cutting environmental regulations during the rare earth metal boom in 2007 with the 21st Century Energy Act, which slashed taxes on petroleum, mining, and big tech companies in an effort to boost production and provide economic stimulus during the 2005-2011 Global Recession. ARA Chairperson Ripeka Wharawhara Love responded to Babineaux on Twitter, tweeting that the VFL is "as equally guilty" as the Progressive Republicans for this "environmentally reckless travesty."

Former National Liberal Party leader Gregor McGrath, the first indigenous Arateran to lead a major political party, delivered a series of scathing criticisms to the present and former governments, referring to their combined record on indigenous rights as "complete and utter garbage." Tying together both the Valentirian Federation of Labour and the Progressive Republicans, Mr. McGrath said that "between both parties we have seen a reduction in the quality of life for indigenous peoples. The poverty and unemployment rates amongst Arateran communities are nearly double that of Estmerish and Gaullican communities. Education, voting rights, civil rights, economic opportunities, whatever the metric Araterans and other indigenous peoples have consistently fallen below the national average. Rather than serving this integral Valentirian community they have chosen to side with the special interests and mega corporations. Well to that I say, enough."

McGrath also took to Twitter to voice his frustrations, launching fierce tweets at both the Prime Minister and his party. Calling out PM Bennett for his connections to the fossil fuel industry, Mr. McGrath referred to his energy policies as "ruthless and criminal," imploring the Prime Minister to act with a "shred of integrity" and release a list of companies who have contributed to his personal parliamentary campaign as well as the Progressive Republican National Committee, which oversees all fundraising conducted at the national level.

Campaign finance laws prevent individual contributions of over £25,000, however PRP candidates have been found guilty of receiving large, illegal contributions from the fossil industry in the 2017, 2014, and 2009 general elections. In total nearly 23 Progressive Republican MPs have been charged and prosecuted for exceeding federal campaign spending limits since 2009. Likewise, 12 MPs from the Valentirian Federation of Labour have also been prosecuted since. Political donors and corporations often bypass campaign spending limits and disclosure regulations by a process referred to in Valentir as "sifting" where donations are channelled through more than one entity or individuals. It is cited regularly by political scientists and activists as one of the leading forms of corruption in Valentir.

The ARA, in conjunction with several activist organizations such as the Valentirian Civil Liberties Union (VCLU), the National Indigenous Students' Union (NISU), and the Conservation Society have partnered with the National Liberal and Green parties to organize protests next week, as well as demand that Parliament pass legislation protecting indigenous communities from "corporate greed" and holding "criminal" executives to account for their "intentional damaging of the environment in pursuit of profit." Tens of thousands of climate change and indigenous' rights activists, as well as students and political activists are expected to fuel what could be some of the largest protests in Valentirian history.

Piraean police at the scene in central Alikianos.
Etruria’s flawless defeat of Gibany and entry to the CdM’s semi-finals was tainted yesterday by the murder of Prisco Lombardi in a drunken brawl in Alikianos. His death has led to seven arrests, including three Etrurians, the government has stated that its “confident Piraean authorities will bring those responsible to justice.”

Prisca Lombardi, a 28-year old man from Solaria was killed by a stab-wound to the neck following a bar brawl with Gibish and Amathians. No further details have been provided by Piraean police, but they have launched a murder investigation.

Seven people were arrested at the scene, three Etrurians, two Gibish, one Piraean and one Amathian.

The Etrurian embassy in Piraea confirmed the death of an Etrurian national this afternoon. It has contacted the victim’s family and is providing them the financial and logistical support needed to return their loved one from Piraea.

Prisco Lombardi of Solaria worked at Caviglia Aeronautica’s plant in the city. Colleagues expressed shock and horror at his death on social media, with the company itself saying, “Prisco was a well-liked and productive employee. His teammates have expressed deep loss of someone who they described as kind, friendly and supportive. Caviglia Aeronautica offers its condolences to his family and friends.”

Earlier reports that Mr. Lombardi was a member of S.S Solaria’s infamous Legione Nera ultra was dismissed by his sister Annunziata. In a tweet she said, “many people are saying my brother was a member of an Ultra, this is not true. Ultras are thugs, my brother was kind and decent human being.”

Legione Nera itself used its main twitter account to dismiss the report also, “never has the Black Legion known this man or had this man as a legionary. Though we offer our prayers to his family.”

Foreign Minister Gianfraco Galizia gave a quick statement saying, “in every case that an Etrurian citizen is murdered abroad, the Federal government expects a thorough and detailed investigation. We have confidence that Piraea will deliver justice for this young man.”

FEGC, Etruria’s sporting federation has warned that should the three Etrurians currently under arrest be found to have instigated the brawl, they will be banned from international, regional and domestic games for the rest of their lives.

In an online statement, the body said, “should the three Etrurians currently under arrest in Piraea for the brawl that left one Etrurian dead, be found responsible for the fight, FEGC will issue lifetime bans for them from every international, regional and domestic game. We will not tolerate violence, as ambassadors for this country they should know better.”

More details are expected to emerge in coming days.

AS VIOLENCE MOUNTS, UNEASE AND DISPLEASURE IS FELT WITHIN THE THEOPEFTATOU GOVERNMENT

Image
Police have made several arrests in connection with the death of Prisco Lombardi.
Alikianos, Piraea - The killing of Prisca Lombardi, a 28-year old Etrurian, in a bar brawl last night has placed the government of Maria Theopeftatou in a tricky situation. Lombardi, who was killed last night in a confrontation with a group of Gibish, Amathian, and Piraean nations at a bar in down-town Alikianos, has become the center of a diplomatic scandal with the Etrurian government.

The Etrurian government has denounced the killing, which Prime Minister Theopeftatou said was "vile and senseless". She said that she has ordered the national police force to investigate Lombardi's death.

Police have already made several arrests in relation to the case. Seven suspects were detained by bar security last night and arrested by police. However, two additional arrests were made this morning.

The identities of the suspects have been withheld, but in total three Etrurians, three Piraeans, two Gibish, and one Amathian. Police are investigating whether or not any of those involved, including Lombardi, had any affiliation to football ultras - groups of extremist football fans.

Ultras have caused trouble at this year's Coupe before. Amathian ultras erupted into violence on 28 September after their team was defeated by Caldia. They stormed the pitch to attack to Caldish team and outside of the stadium began a riot that was suppressed by Piraean riot police.

Violence from Amathian and Etrurian ultras has remained a concern since, with threats of violence being made by fans of both teams. Large-scale violence has not been seen again since the Amathia-Caldia match. However, concerns resurfaced before Friday's match at Independence Stadium between Etruria and Gibany. The two nations have a troubled history, intense football cultures, and border Piraea.

On 12 October, three Etrurians assaulted four Gaullicans at a sports bar during the Caldia-Estmere match. All three were arrested and are strongly suspected to have ties to an ultra group. It evoked a strong response from the Etrurian football association, which has promised a lifetime ban for any Etrurian fans who engage in racist chants and abuse.

However, despite these incidents the Coupe has gone on successfully. The government is understood to be mostly pleased with it, but is concerned that violence could quickly become the legacy of this year's competition should another major incident occur.

CHARLES DUMONT BECOMES FIRST WHITE EUCLEAN RECIPIENT OF THE KUZIVA MIDZI MEDAL OF GARAMBURA

Image
President Chiyangwa announced Dumont's knighthood at the Droits de l'homme Day Parade in Mutimukuru.
Mutimukuru, Garambura - Droits de l'homme Day is always a large celebration and festival in Garambura, celebrated on the 22nd of October every year, and marks the heroism of the 5th Governor of Terre-Noire, Charles Dumont, who refused to surrender his position to the national functionalists amidst their seizure of power in 1919. Dumont stood firm to defend the rights of the natives in Garambura, which had increased drastically under Dumont's leadership, and delivered his famous Droits de l'homme ("Rights of Man") speech in Sainte-Germaine on October 20, 1919, protesting against national functionalist takeover - and their views against other races.

Dumont was eventually seized by the national functionalists after his speech and was executed by hanging for treason in Mambiza on October 22, 1919, the date on which the day is celebrated. Naturally, Droits de l'homme Day has come to represent more than Dumont's actions, and has become a sort of mini-independence day celebration, embodying Garamburan liberties and republicanism, but it represents a large milestone in Garamburan history.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of that fateful day, with President Muzukuru Chiyangwa announcing that Charles Dumont is to receive the Kuziva Midzi Medal of Garambura - the highest order of Garambura - posthumously. In his speech, Chiyangwa described Dumont as a key figure who "chopped the wood for Midzi's torch of resistance" and one who "understood the human necessities for liberty and freedom". Dumont's knighthood is somewhat controversial, with leader of the left-wing nationalist party Mouvement pour une Garamboure libre, or Movement for a Free Garambura, condemning the knighthood as "succumbing to the visage of Euclean cooperation".

Despite this, his knighthood as been received well, and joins 27 other recipients of the medal whose portraits are displayed upon the corridors of the Garamburan Congress Building and the Imbayaka.
