Autism Discussion Thread

Postby Area 6-Z » Sat Feb 02, 2019 1:18 pm

Autism- a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior.

Autism can be a touchy subject for some parents to talk about when a child gets autism it can be both a challenge for parents and the child depending on the spectrum they land on. Kids with autism are also victims of bullying in schools just because they're "different" from the other kids.

Doctors don't know what the cause of this some believe its due to genes or the enviroment the child is growing up in.

I created this thread just to see what are NSG's thoughts on autism like how should parents take care of a autistic child? And should schools do a better job at stomping out bullying against autistic kids?

My Opinion- I understand that having a child with autism can be a challenge for some parents, but that doesn't give the parents the right to give up their child just because they're going to act different from the other children. Parents should always take care of their child no matter if they have a mental disorder or not, parents should treat their autistic child like a normal child.

As for the schools I think some schools are doing great when it comes to stomping out bullying against autistic children. Autistic students should always be respected by their fellow peers and teachers. Other schools however, need lots of work usually when a autistic child is getting bullied most teachers ignore it or they join in on the bullying which wrong in many places. For teacher to mock or bully a autistic child.

Y'know, considering how many of us prowl NSG, I am surprised it took this long for an autism discussion thread to finally emerge, years after my own faded into obscurity.

Maybe we're just not very predisposed to banding together lol

It is worth it, but these type of threads tend to appear once every year or so and evaporate fairly quickly, it's just not something a lot of us talk about all that much. It's not because we're ashamed of it, it's just because we don't see it as that big of a deal.

There's not much of a "culture" developed around it.

Every case is different. I would say, not being a parent, that there's no way I can even venture a guess at how best the parent of a child in the ASD should provide care for said child.

What I can say is that a child with a serious condition like autism should not be the victim of mocking and/or bullying by either peers or adults.

Its not real, the majority of the time. I'd be willing to bet my shed that it is over diagnosed and is rarer than people think. It is only adults freaking out that their kid is unpopular or goes their own path rather than what is expected. In the old days, there wasn't this nonsense about people having one or more "disorders" by default. A stupid person was just seen as stupid or a person got shunned until they started to conform and meet expectations.

Obviously you have no fucking clue as to what goes on, medically, for a child to be diagnosed with autism if this is your shitty answer to the OP.

So you don't think autism is real? That's kinda sad if you believe this.

Parents shouldn't "take care" of an autistic child, that is, not differently than any other kid. Specialists should take care of their problem.

And should schools do a better job at stomping out bullying against autistic kids?

No one bullies my autistic students. Mostly because they are better students than the potential bullies and don't waste time in silly, useless interaction with cretins.

That... that's not how it goes. Science. Check it out. You may be mistaking that with claims that ADD or ADHD are over-diagnosed. Autism is something else entirely.

back in ye olden days we also shunned lepers and didn't sanitize surgical instruments before using them on a new patient.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as a teenager, which has recently (post DSM V) been lumped into Autism Spectrum Disorder. As a child, I know that I was incredibly difficult and probably displayed more on the spectrum as classical autism; but my parents were always supportive and loving, and they did not treat me as if I were a helpless, annoying weirdo. I wouldn't be who I am today without my parent's love and support.

Raising a child in general is a challenge. Autism can make it 100x more difficult. But autistic children are still children, still humans, and they're deserving of love and respect. Sure, they can be frustrating and hard to understand, like any child and more so, but parenthood isn't meant to be easy.

All mental disorders are relativistic, like most everything in life. That doesn't change anything in actuality, however. Autism may be just a word in a sense, but does this change the day-to-day reality of people living with the associated symptoms or their families? It doesn't.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, though -- back to the good ol' days when men were men and women were women. Pepperidge Farms remembers.
