December 3rd, 1990New Weapon Development
The Department of War is beginning development on a lighter and shorter version of the currently fielded M16A2 Infantry Assault Rifle. The intent is to create a rifle that is easier to carry and limits the strain on the individual soldier as to increase mobility among infantry units. The Department has set aside $6,000,000 for development costs on this new weapon. A competition will be opened to firearm companies across the Confederacy to create and submit a design for this weapon, the best design will be chosen and the company will receive a contract to develop the weapon to further fit Army requirements. The requirements are as follow:
Must be chambered in 5.56x45mm
Must weigh less than 8 lbs (loaded)
Must have a barrel length of 13-16 inches.
Cannot have an overall length that surpasses 35 inches.
