Again I ask why not make all housing something only the rich can afford. Push all those other people out.

The issue is not people affording it. The issue is that a lot of renters will just make condos out of existing apartments, or will otherwise try to circumvent rent control.

Rent control is just not sustainable from an economic standpoint, let alone practical for the situation of high rent.

I'd prefer abolishing antidevelopment laws and spreading mutliuse zoning, but those don't sound as catchy as rent control unfortunately.

Oh, come now. I live in a rural community that's fairly poor, but I wouldn't call us unsafe. Petty crime's a little high, but that's all.

I think rural is a key word there.

lmao it's not even that they are building new "luxury condos".

They merely changed the form of "leasing" or ownership if you will. Instead of leasing apartments they are selling vertical real estate. It's more profitable under a rent control scheme. Which is in part what has pushed out a lot of people from the Bay Area.

They're still the same ol' buildings, all that changes is the owners got pissy about being told how much to charge and changed the form of ownership to give a big giant "fuck you" to SF.

And ask again whether you read what is posted. Rent control doesn't fix the issue and in fact makes it worse; removing rent control results in lower rents and more housing. Rent control only benefits the wealthy as well.

Egh. It's neither a good thing or a bad thing, it just is. It can in fact be detrimental in other parts of the nation tho.

Right now we are seeing Californians coming to Texas and driving up the house values thru the roof because they don't understand the concept of "your dollar over here carries a third more weight than in your shithole you just came out of". Same thing in Nevada, where your dollar gets you far more than in Texas I think.

Because it's irrelevant to the matter at hand; personal anecdotes do not constitute objective information, particularly when the economic research on the matter has reached the conclusion already on the policy.

That's a trend I've noticed within my state, people moving out of Boston and driving up the cost of living in a westwardly expanding sphere of fuck the poor. It's gotten rather annoying actually.

How much of it is actually the evil greedy landlord with a monacle trying to squeeze more cash out of the poor tenants and how much of it is because the landlord has increasing costs across the board and has to cover them somehow?

So why do you hate the poor? Why do you support greedy landlords and rich professionals looking down on peasants?

The landlord has a right to try to get more dough. If you are able to get people to pay a higher prices, then why keep your prices lower? Simple supply and command.

Not entirely. When values go up, taxes go up, and when taxes go up to the point that the people who are already living there can't anymore, that pushes them out. So the middle class and the wealthy get nice safe communities and the poorer residents(many of whom are minorities, and I'm not accusing anyone of racism, merely stating an established fact) get thrown out onto the streets or into worse neighbourhoods.

Why do we keep building luxary eyesores like 432 Park avenue and then have the audacity to wonder why there is a housing shortage? those rich professionals should have to live in average apartment like everyone else and not some supertall ugly glass box.
