I don't disagree with you there, but why should we put yet another NSA shill on the court? Are we giving up on the 4th Amendment for good?

Even if you believe that, that's why the title of this post refers to the hearings backfiring on the left. Instead of attacking his views or actual actions they ran with a 35y/o allegation with no corroborating evidence.
Time & time again the biggest enemy of the democratic party, is the democratic party.

If there was no corroborating evidence, why wasn't the evidence allowed to find that rather than being so intentionally limited that they couldn't even interview the accuser or accused?

The left totally mishandled this, and instead of being a regular trial, they were screaming at the senators, threatening others, causing a mess, and demotivating the more calmer Democrat voters to keep supporting their party. Not to mention that Trump most likely has more support for his party, and could probably have a successful midterms election. I know this isn't like me to get this political, but I just wanted to get this off my chest.

You mean that thing the Republicans said they were going to do, thus preemptively undermining any sexual assault allegation made against a Democratic candidate?

Maybe the voters want political gridlock.Page wrote:Kavanaugh should have been disqualified on policy alone, the sexual assault allegations were superfluous icing on an already iced cake. Kav might've been disqualified on policy alone, and I certainly wouldn't have minded that. However, the circus that followed, with Avenatti joining in, was unnecessary. It's icing on the cake for genuine leftists, like yourself, but for the other side it was a bridge too far. And the Republicans focused on that, instead of Kav's policies.Western Vale Confederacy wrote:
Excellent proof that most US politicians would basically use the Constitution as a Kleenex if they could.
Indeed.

If voters actually want political deadlock, then they have clearly shown that their beloved republic is worthless as a functioning government.

If you look at all the senators that made the biggest stink, they are all from states where the far greater threat to their seat is from a primary challenge than from centrist voters. The New York Governor's race and current California Senate race show that. And if you look at the list of Democrat Senators, you'll realize there aren't that many people who aren't in that boat.
All of the named senators first priority (other than running for President for some of them) is staying abrasive and angry enough when dealing with the opposition to prevent an opening for a primary challenger. In that sense, there's no way the Kavanaugh hearing has backfired. The hearings have only "backfired" if you believe the Senators behind it had broadening the appeal of leftism as a top tier goal.
The Democratic party has changed a lot since Obama was elected. After 2004 they had a smaller minority but it was made up by > 10 Senators from reliably red states in Presidential elections. That forced leadership to be a little more sensitive to what moderates were feeling, because there were so many individual senators that won races by winning over moderates. If you look at the makeup of the Democratic minority now, there are far far fewer Senators motivated to keep their head down in hearings like this, and a lot of them that are still left are being written off this go around.

If that were true the GOP would be extinct outside of blood red states as they've spent the last decade or so pandering exclusively to their far right base. Moderates are jellyfish, if they're polled or asked about they'll of course blubber the proper answer about how they want civility and conversation back in politics, but when voting time comes, they go out and vote for the assholes who are actually ramming their agenda through by any means necessary, not the guys wringing their hands ineffectually and calling for bipartisanship and compromise.
All that's really happened is after 8 years of extending their hands only to get spit in their faces, followed up by the election of Donald Trump, Democrats finally seem to have caught on to that fact.
