If all the meaning you can give them is "you live and work to produce more so that you'll be able to live better and work even more" it won't be a very nice place to live in...unless you turn this dedication to material wealth into a real religion, in which case it becomes as "useless" as art.

I personally suck at Art, but to say that it's a waste of time is kind of a stretch. A world without art, is a world without soul.

You can be a productive member of a society, and do some paintings in your free time. You can be an artist and donate back your earnings as well.
