Plenty of people besides the rich can afford a house. There isn't a shortage of cheap apartments like holy shit. And arbitrarily limiting how much money you can charge for rent just means you're trying to limit the landlord's revenue. And contrary to popular belief not all landlords are millionaire slumlords.

I don't recall saying that. I said slash he money we waste on military equipment we don't need and invest in public housing. I said nothing about getting rid of the military entirely

And public housing has been and always will be a disaster.

I see you're finally getting woke to capitalismAnd public housing has been and always will be a disaster.
There have been failures in public housing because of a lack of proper funding for upkeep and infrastructure. If you half-ass something, of course it's going to fail. Nowadays, the problem is that instead of public housing, it's government-subsidized private housing, which leaves all sorts of room for abuse.
Alternatively, or rather, ideally, turn apartments into housing cooperatives. I live near one, and it works well. Rents are kept much lower than other parts of the city because there's no need to turn a profit margin for a landlord.

I don't know why we can't build more of that.

Everything shouldn't be about making a profit. There is a massive shortage of affordable housing in my city and others.
Housing prices are skyrocketing in many places as well. Many cannot afford to own a home and soon renting will be hard for many as well.
