And no it isn't.

Yes it is. Its a problem in many major cities all they build is luxury apartments that the average person can't afford unless they make 50,000 or more and even that is stretch. Its like they want housing to be for the rich only. There ought to be limits on what you can charge for rent and if that's anti capitalist i really don't care.

It's not just anti-capitalist to support rent controls, it's actively against the interests of the lower income groups. When rent prices are artificially suppressed, it simply isn't profitable to maintain or create new moderate/low income housing. Eventually the rent controls cause the cost of upkeep to overtake the rent income. Landlords would be better off by letting the rent controlled houses lay vacant and decaying than have them occupied by low income residents (as we have seen in places with rent controls). Some landlords get around this by charging an upfront fee when a resident moves in, in order to offset losses from the rent controls. This has the effect of pricing out low income residents who can't afford the upfront fee. The upfront fee, mind you, that is created by the rent control. The rent controls go further by discouraging the construction of new housing. It isn't profitable to create new housing when the prospective revenues for those apartments are low at best and in the negative at worst. Discouraging housing construction would further aggravate a shortage.

In the long run, rent controls create a perpetual housing shortage that further drives up prices in non-controlled buildings and destroys the rent controlled apartments.

Provide a disposable payload for a test launch of an experimental heavy rocket with reusable boosters that’s currently the most powerful in the world? Oh, I’m sorry, you were trying to be rhetorical.

Most states with the highest crime rates are in fact Republican states

Unemployment appears mixed

Also, California has a very average unemployment rate. Like the national average.

Not surprised. I've met people with 100k a year salaries in the bay area who had issues with affording a place even remotely close to their work. Its not surprising people are finding it not worth the expense of living there anymore.

Thermodolia wrote:
Sovaal wrote:But that would Ben about it, maybe a couple lines connecting it to the north east. Anything west of St. Louis is goin g to be too out of the way.

Oh ya. And nobody is advocating for that. You will probably have every big city east of the Mississippi, including Texas, connected by high-speed rail.

And then parts of the west coast will have high speed rail. Everything else will be airplanes. In the future 3-6 hour car trips will probably be replaced with high speed rail.

The US is not getting widepsread high speed rail like that anytime soon. Its been a hard sell in California and I'm skeptical of other states' ability to pay for lines. We all know that the Federal government isn't going to pony up enough cash to pay for them and not every state can afford to offer up nearly 10 billion in bonds.

EDIT: Also regarding Hyperloop, it starts to make a lot more sense once if you look at it not as a company but as a recruiting contest for Space-X engineers. Elon knows he's not going to be building the things on any large scale but damn if he isn't getting a lot of college students who want to work at space-x demonstrating their practical engineering skills.

I have noticed this goofy ass trend in a lot of cities.

Everybody moves to the ghetto because it's trendy, and then the ghetto becomes the rich neighborhood.

The ghetto inhabitants move out to where the rent is cheap, and that then becomes the new ghetto.

And then the rich people move to THAT ghetto and the cycle repeats itself.

My point is, rich people are clearly the main vectors of crime. :ugeek:
