The multiverse is versatile. For every universe snuffed out by catastrophic temporal paradoxes, two almost identical universes appear to continue the timelines.

That makes sense.

The Liberal nightmare is finally here; soon it will be possible to get guns en masse without a background check in the 21st century- this does not bode well. Quite frankly this is terrible, nobody is going to be safer from this. If anything, more people who shouldn't have guns (because they would use it to shoot innocents) are going to get them. But it was only a matter of time, and since you can't legislate the internet into submission basically nothing can be done- short of another Great Firewall. What I am more interested in: can you 3D print a panic room?

America's new motto will be "Get a gun or you deserve to die, hippy!"

With your hyperbole I thought that your stance was that this was always the case.

People could get them in made before. Just have a tool shop.

1. That solves nothing unless you can prove that those versions are going to be safe and reliable as well. Which again means you need some sort of safety regulations like you have for the regular firearms industry.

2. The sort of people that want something that looks the part but does not function or feel the same way can just print out an empty shell or buy a toy gun or a deactivated one already. I don't see your proposal getting much traction with them (due to increased cost) or the other kind that want a shooting gun that feels the way it should either.
Although you might see a market for printouts of empty shells with some minimal functionality for those people.

I should have elaborated, I see. The idea is to make these prints more safe by making them less complex than the original. Sturdiness through simplicity, so to speak. It probably also makes it easier to put the parts together.

I know exactly what you meant. But the point is that by doing so you are fundamentally changing how the thing works mechanically to the point that it becomes functionally different for the user. Fundamentally there is nothing stopping you from making a simple blowback SMG and putting it inside a shell that looks like an MP-5 or STG or AK. But who is this going to be for?

- The people that want to have that firearm won't want that. They want the real thing that shoots and feels like the real thing.
- The people that just want something that looks the part wont' want it either because it's more expensive than just the shell without the gun parts.
- The people that just want a fun thing to shoot don't care how you dress it up as and will rather buy a custom 3D gun that's been engineered from the ground up to be a fun shooter.
- The people that want a gun to shoot people dead with and don't care about any of the above will just buy a black market gun for cheaper than this thing.
- The people that want a gun for home defense will just buy a gun from the store, any gun and won't want to pay a premium to get it 3D printed to look like a special fancy thing.

And in any place where buying firearms legitimately is illegal 3D printing them will be illegal as well. So this all only applies to the rest.

Fundamentally it boils down to this. Would you like to own a supercar? Of course. But would you want to own a Trabant with the bodywork of a supercar put on?

The first point is the best one. The whole reason people are hopping on this train is because it could negate gun control almost entirely as long as you have an internet connection.

Not all gun control is bad tbh.

Actually there is. And it's the same one you use to regulate the production of home made firearms in general. You regulate the distribution of blueprints and finished products. A competent craftsmen with a minimal gunsmiths shop can produce any number of lethal weapons including assault rifles. But if you make it illegal to do so, restrict the distribution of actual blueprints he needs to get working and restrict his ability to sell his work he probably won't.

And the probably is key here because laws are not binary. No law is ever going to eliminate something forbidden. Just like no software is ever going to make your computer truly virus safe. They just serve to make it much less likely to happen.

Just don't let this fall into the wrong hands.

Not to mention the technical chinks in the armor that need to be addressed (reliability being one) before 3D Printed Guns becomes the norm.

They'll newer be the norm.

3D printing is expensive, slow and generally a bad way to build things compared to other methods. It's just that some of those other methods are so expensive to start with that they only make sense if you are building large numbers of items. So the big players in the firearms industry won't ever be producing 3d printed guns to sell because they are already producing in bulk or intend to produce in bulk and can save more money by using those other methods.

The only place where 3D printing is going to be big is prototyping and various small scale limited production things like your average back yard fool that prints him self an unsafe AK clone that blows up in his arms.
