Will increased funding change the class management and character of these public networks? No. That is my argument, just in case it's been too hard to follow.

I'd like proof that only rich, white urbanites consume NPR and PBS.

Why would I do that? I never said "only".

Yeah, you did:

Bakery Hill wrote:PBS and NPR only gets watched by rich urban white people.

Forgive my initial hyperbole, I am a rash and impulsive man. You'll find thereafter I used more accurate wording.

But if you'd like some data?

What we can see is this. Among local stations, viewership is diverse. But these stations don't seem to be watched by many people unfortunately, here's where I'd put the money. Among PBS as a whole however, things get a bit more mayo. This pat on the back page is ridiculously elitist, here's a few choics figures, that paint quite the picture.

PBS viewers are 45% more likely to be in grad school. They're 34% more likely to buy tickets to the opera, the ballet and classical concerts. 18% more likely to watch art films. 73% more likely to have donated over $1000 to a non profit in the last six months. 74% more likely to go horseback riding. 78% more likely to spend $1000 to $2,499 on computer equipment online. 24% more likely to be involved in the business purchase of network related products. 38% more likely to check stock quotes online multiple times a day. 31% more likely to have an investment portfolio of between a million and half a million dollars.

NPR is far worse.

According to 2009, NPR statistics, about 20.9 million listeners tune into NPR each week. According to 2015 figures, 87% of the NPR terrestrial public radio audience and 67% of the NPR podcast audience is white. According to the 2012 Pew Research Center 2012 News Consumption Survey, NPR listeners tend to be highly educated, with 54% of regular listeners being college graduates and 21% having some college. NPR's audience is almost exactly average in terms of the sex of listeners (49% male, 51% female). NPR listeners have higher incomes than average (the 2012 Pew study showed that 43% earn over $75,000, 27% earn between $30,000 and $75,000)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPR#Audience
http://www.people-press.org/2012/09/27/ ... audiences/

You will see that the audience last year for member stations that run NPR's news programs—the closest proxy publicly available for the shows themselves—was 5 percent African-American, 6 percent Latino and 5 percent Asian-American. For blacks and Latinos, this is less than half their proportion in the nation's adult population. Not so good, seen that way.

PBS makes more than enough money on its own.

Agreed, Elmo has his merchandise and some stations stop showing documentaries and air British dramas and crime shows.

Well let's be honest. Those severe rural people make up a small percentage of the population, so they are hardly top priority for anyone.

And even if they where the cause, wouldn't you want them to be insignificant?

When it comes down to a few votes on whether or not some one will win, say a swing state like Ohio, no. But other wise, not really.

So much for the blue wall, but then again anything with a name like that will come crashing down. The Solid South is probably just as good an example.

Democrats Unveil 324 Million New Slogans To Appeal To Each U.S. Resident Individually

WASHINGTON—In an effort to rebrand the struggling party after a poor showing in the 2016 elections and to win over voters ahead of next year’s midterms, the Democratic National Committee on Monday unveiled 324 million new slogans to appeal to each United States resident individually. “We’re going to let Americans know that we’re fighting for each of them specifically with tailored slogans such as ‘A Better Construction Job For Brian’ and ‘Improving Schools For Your 9-Year-Old Twins Chloe And Sara,’” explained DNC chair Tom Perez, adding that the party sought to connect with more Americans by placing the customized slogans on postcards and door-hanger advertisements personally addressed to every inhabitant of the U.S. “From ‘Better Healthcare For Bill Webber’s Diabetes’ to ‘Mallory, We’ll Put That New Addition On Your House,’ to ‘We Can Probably Get You Five Minutes With Mark Ruffalo, Janice Marcott Of Cheyenne, Wyoming,’ our new party slogans have been carefully calibrated to narrowly focus on the issues each particular voter cares about most.” At press time, the DNC had already botched the rollout and sent bumper stickers with “Lowering Child Support For Ted” to all 324 million Americans.

I wouldn't call Vermont or Hawaii "severe" rural.

Vermont has a similar population as Alaska. Now look at the size of them on a map and think about how much more sparsely populated Alaska must be to have a comparable population.

Vermont is rural in the sense that most people live in small towns, but it's not one of those places where you can drive hundreds of miles without passing a city. Most people, if not the whole state, are within 100 miles of Burlington or Barre/Montpelier. The interstates don't generally need those signs warning people "Next gas 50 miles" or whatever because it's not very far between towns.

AFAIK, Hawaii is a similar situation, but with less ice cream and maple syrup, more volcanoes and pineapples.

I didn't claim Vermont or Hawaii were rural, I was making fun of Gauthier's claim that Clinton lost because the electoral college favors small states.
