EVENTS IN CASSADAIGUA CAUSE SOME CONCERN

Last night, there was a disturbing story out of Grande Mountain, Cassadaigua of a mass shooting at a Men’s Rights protest. Additionally, there was significant automobile vandalism that took place, and we have heard that three vehicles were set ablaze, and that cars belonged to people protesting. Here in Newmanistan, as a nation that formerly bordered Cassadaigua in One Big Island before each of us went our separate regional ways, it’s a reminder of the corruption that exists in that country. It’s a nation that should be great, and for the most part it is. It is an economic powerhouse, a sporting powerhouse, with a royal family that has been very successful but for the most part, compassionate, if you are among the right gender. But they just have this problem, which they have never been able to get rid of. On one hand, it’s nation to look up to if you are woman. There is no better example of a nation that proves that a woman can do everything that a man can do in life. On the other hand, these instances of sexism happen too frequently.

Male Equality Now, as we remember it, is a men’s rights organization that wants to do the right thing, and wants to do it peacefully. It seemed as though they were making some progress when we last remembered, but a Cassadagan press release suggested that the nation was becoming concerned with international male influences and that is a reason why they pulled out of everything in sports, and perhaps other things. With the nation hosting an event like this, it would seem to be a logical time for Male Equality Now, or MEN, to stage some protests to remind the world of the corruption in Cassadaigua. From what we’ve been told, that’s all that was happening in Grande Mountain. None of the violence was created by the protestors, and instead it was instigated by a group of female college students. As of right now, the shooter got away, perhaps able to easily blend into the crowd during a moment of panic.

How Queen Cassie and Cassadagan law enforcement respond to this is critical. There is no nation in the world that can completely control the actions of all of its citizens. Tragedies like this happen, and it does not mean it was endorsed by the government. Now law enforcement must move quickly, and find the shooter and bring them to justice. As for the world, we will all await to hear how the nation will ensure that this will not happen again. Are traveling fan bases safe? I think so. Historically from what I recall there is never an issue in that regard but I may be wrong. We’ll reserve judgement right now.

Otherwise, there was some baseball played! We are now 24 games into the thirty game season, and if you are from Schiltzberg, you can already make your plans. Of course, they were anyway, and didn’t need to wait to make sure they qualified. A few other nations are on the cusp, including the Rockets who have a magic number of one. With a 3-2 record against Zwangzug and all games close, that is not a tiebreaker we can say we have in the bag, so we’ll still need to get that “1". I’m sure we will. The battle for second is going to be interesting, and that MD30 game between us and Zwangzug could be critical for our opponents.

Financial Stability in the Stallhaven Companies' League

The end of the first season of the Stallhaven Companies' League was a spectacular one, albeit that it has left the organisation of the League with some points to follow up on. The League was the first attempt to pay players for their hard work in showcasing excellent baseball in our region, and it took off with five teams, all from different cities in Stallhaven. The Minnegheniss Miners, Cirelbourne Steelers, Heightilleseigh, Smeltwyck Skippers and Silvergouw Company. The good points:
1) Supporters of all five clubs showed up numerously to their respective teams and stadiums. The Steelers and Skippers especially, and all five in general, boasted good attendance figures that show that the league has a future in Stallhaven.
2) The salaries are good. They are not so high as to place an insurmountable burden on the clubs, so that the clubs will continue to attract players and play on the highest level for years to come, but also not so low that players have to place another job above baseball to afford their monthly dues.
3) The level of play is high. It might not be so high as some games, where entire cities can call upon their best players to show up, but it is certainly better than earlier attempts at setting up a league. Most of all, this is probably the highest standard of play that can be reached without making irresponsible choices that could jeopardise the upcoming seasons of the SCL.

For some things that can be improved on:
1) There is only a small pool of talent that the league calls on. Talent from other regions in Ko-oren is largely ignored, and even players from Stallhaven are not always valued. Players from cities that aren't represented, are not easy to find regardless of skill. On top of this, as teams are tied to just one company in every city, not all players are free to join these teams. Teams will have to act independently from their mother companies in order to flourish.
2) Minnegheniss and Heightilleseigh are small town clubs, that might hinder the development of the league in the long run. The companies that they harbour, are relatively small and therefore cannot always compete with the larger entities.

The first season of the league was very well-organised compared to some attempts that we have seen in recent years. Attempts where the organisation either wanted to pay players themselves, or tried to apply to governments to pay the players, hoping that the revenue of the league would, in turn, pay the municipalities' money back. That only went to plan in one case out of eight teams that commenced play that year. Therefore, we are absolutely in favour of a second season of the SCL. The Steelers and Skippers will likely be the flagship teams of the league, pulling ahead of Silvergouw, Minnegheniss and Heightilleseigh. Silvergouw is the clear third here, unless they can find untapped resources. The organisation has already announced that some of these resources are fair game for next season:
1) There will not be a restriction on the origin of players. Stallhaveners will no longer be protected in every roster, and some of the good fielding of the Tarrashall could fall to the SCL. Simultaneously, Sytherans from all over Ko-oren will be available for hire, as will the Gehrennan players. This carries an extra effect, as the players that attract new fans to the games in their regions, will now be monopolised by the SCL, which might stifle development in Tarrashall and Gehrenna, and that might eventually cut interest in baseball.
2) Every team will spend a certain amount of money, never larger than a certain percentage of their income, on player wages. This way, every team will spend as much as can be safely spent on loans, with no risk of teams going under.
3) There will be a system in place to ensure that every team that commences the season, will be able to finish it. Last season, due to some irregularities, weather and other problems, some matches were skipped altogether which led to an uneven table. Every team will play as many games as the other teams, ensuring an even competition.

The second season of the SCL is to start play after the World Baseball Classic.

The team had sat down in the locker, discussed the violence is Cassadaigua, and, thanks mainly to Jack and a few others really not giving a shit, decided not to make any statements or protests of the country that will host the playoffs.

"They won't. Not our place to dictate world politics."

"Seriously. If we make the playoffs, I'm just playing baseball."

"Absolutely. Keep your trap shut, hit bombs."

Jack pulled a flask from his bag and knocked back a swig of vodka. "I'll drink to that." He gave it to Logan.

"Fuckin' a... and just think of the talent. No ugly bastard in the stands!"

"Yea, you gonna scout the talent, Logan?"

"Aye." Logan took a swig for himself and handed the flask back. The two put in their earphones and turned on some music for themselves.

IMPORTANT LLAMANEANS REACT QUICKLY TO DAGAN VIOLENCE

Many important Llamaneans have joined the international community in denouncing yesterday's events in Cassadaigua. After reports of the shooting deaths of six members of MEN, a "meninist" organization in a nation infamous for its lack of gender equality, in Grande Mountain, the Llamanean community wondered how Super-Llamaland's leaders would respond to the attack. And both the Llamanean government and the Llamanean Baseball Association have strongly come out against last night's events, although responses have heavily varied.

In a speech to the Llamanean Congress this morning, President Morgan confirmed that the government always had "fully supported the meninist movement in Cassadaigua", and would continue to support them in a "manner that is nothing but respectful towards the Matriarchy of Cassadaigua." Diplomatic as it sounded, Morgan's actions were nonetheless a direct challenge to the Dagans, and he backed it up by condemning "not only the senseless violence and tragedy of last night, but the lack of action from the government of Cassadaigua." Reports indicate that the government, despite Morgan's interest, have neither entered talks with MEN nor provided them with anything other than moral support. However, with Morgan having a huge influence on the Conservative Party, and with the struggling but still second-largest party in Super-Llamaland, the Liberal Democrats, fully behind gender equality, such actions will likely find favor with the Congress.

The Llamanean government came out very harshly, but Tigers' manager Laurent Mårtensson was as diplomatic as Eden Morgan was fiery. Although Mårtensson personally scheduled a televised press conference to speak on the night's events, he remained apolitical, never even referring to Cassadaigua's government or police forces. The majority of Mårtensson's responses seemed pre-prepared and bland, but the half-Arondic's most important takeaway from the night? "The Tigers are not going to let this distract us from our pursuit of a fourth World Baseball Classic title. Although our government is considering all the options right now, I can personally confirm right now that we will show up to the playoffs no matter what they decide." A strong ending to a vanilla press conference.

The passionate, outspoken, pro-equality Mårtensson going quiet could only be a result of an LBA gag, and indeed, the newly-revamped Llamanean Baseball Association, headed by former WBC Council President Jonathan Fletcher, confirmed that they'd "heavily advised" Mårtensson's running of the press conference. In a separate press conference, Fletcher offered "full support to the people of Cassadaigua, reeling from this senseless tragedy", stayed away from directly mentioning the government or police forces of Cassadaigua, and offered his support to Cassadaigua's delegation to the WBC Council in determining how to react to the night's events. Similarly to Mårtensson, Fletcher immediately rejected "all proposals for the Tigers' boycott of the WBC playoffs. Llamanean baseball has come too far for that." However, aside from offering moral support to MEN, he did take one action. "I have contacted Cassadaigua's baseball association. And I will tell them that Super-Llamaland will strongly request that if they are scheduled to play in Grande Mountain, that their games be relocated to another site."

Three strong responses, all very different, but all of them offered their condolences. The one important Llamanean in baseball who didn't? None other than Hicaña's manager, Alex Cameron, who took a very neutral, even blasé stance on the matter. "It's a distraction," Cameron offered instead, "and the Phoenixes need all of their concentration to even make the playoffs, let alone boycott it." Calls for his removal have erupted across Hicaña for what some protesters have called "A disgustingly selfish, careless stance on recent events", but the government doesn't seem keen on removing their finest-ever baseball manager from his position.

What will Super-Llamaland do to respond to this horrific tragedy? We've gotten some hints from the likes of Mårtensson, Fletcher, and President Eden Morgan, but it's all up in the air. Tigers fans should try their hardest to keep up with the news - if reports of boycotts from other countries are true, then this crisis is just beginning.

Misogynists Incite Violence in Cassadaigua, Pose as Victims

(SP) Male Equality Now (MEN), a Cassadagan misogynist group, incited a riot last night in Grande Mountain, Cassadaigua. After MEN incited a riot and threatened the safety of some college girls in Grande Mountain, one of the girls heroically fired a gun in self-defense. As it turns out, 6 misogynists were killed and 2 more were injured in the violence that they provoked. Prime Minister Sara Poenius released a statement earlier about the attack. "I am saddened to hear of violence in Grande Mountain, Cassadaigua last night. Grande Mountain is one of the great cities of the Cassadagan nation but last night its reputation was blackened when a protest by Male Equality Now, a misogynist organization, turned violent. According to reports from Cassadaigua, 6 were killed and 2 were injured in the violence. As Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saintland, I wish to condemn the violence and send my thoughts and prayers to the people of Grande Mountain. I also urge Cassadagan authorities to take action against hate speech, which often tends to quickly escalate toward violence." - Prime Minister Sara Poenius

Cassadaigua will soon be hosting the World Baseball Classic playoffs. Our own National Team, led by the Three Princesses, led group 3 earlier on in the tournament but remains in strong position as the end of the group stage approaches. Princess Gloria will pitch against Ko-oren tonight just days after her complete game 2 hit shutout of The Lone Star Union, which is currently 3rd in the group. Sanctii pitching has shined in this edition of the WBC so far, allowing just 3.17 runs per game over the course of this WBC. Princess Sophia has also shined in this WBC, hitting her 7th and 8th home runs of the tournament in yesterday's 14 to 1 rout of Siroy. Tonight's game against Ko-oren will be played at Royal Stadium. Tickets are still available and every lady who brings her husband or son dressed in pink will receive a free Princess Gloria bobblehead!

With 3 Games Left, it's Now or Never for Mets

Tenburg dropped two of three over the most recent leg, getting blown out by the Land of Land, and losing a close game to Elgenstad, but beating South Yerfilag decisively with a 5-1 victory, just enough to keep Hicana at bay, although just.

These last three games against Hicana, Ethane and Land will be the deciding factor as to whether or not they make the playoffs in Cassadaigua. The game against Hicana is especially crucial when one considers how they are quite literally neck and neck for the second spot, though Tenburg keeps Hicana at bay via it's runs for/against ratio. There are a few different scenarios to see Tenburg into the playoffs, but the simplest is to defeat Hicana, who handed them their first loss of the matchup last time around. Losing to them is also the simplest way to be ousted from the #2 spot, so the final matchup between the two guarantees to be a barn-burner. The game will be at home, in Downtown Tallow, so the atmosphere is certain to be riotous. Lions ace Finbar Fallon will get the start on the mound, against Gabriel Arroyo.

“Meghan’s Mission” Claims Responsibility For Attack

As the nation mourns the loss of six men killed in what had been a peaceful protest in Grande Mountain, a Spacebook Live video surfaced this morning by a previously unknown group that referred to itself as “Meghan’s Mission”, apparently in honor of Meghan Kinson. In the video, a woman dressed completely in black with her face covered by a ski mask, confesses to the shooting, and says that it is the work of her organization. Here is a transcript of the statement made by the unknown female,

“Yesterday, there was some excitement in Grande Mountain as a group of men again acted like whiny little brats that cannot handle what makes Cassadaigua great. They want to make Cassadaigua like everyone else, and that is dangerous for our nation. In the name of Meghan Kinson, who heroically stepped up in the face of this equality movement, only to become a martyr for us; sacrificing her glorious soccer career, I declare that we will fight in her name. We are Meghan’s Mission, and we are not going to let Cassadaigua become like everyone else. We will fight! People don’t need to get shot, and you won’t get shot if you don’t go out and join one of these protests. It is my hope that we will grow and become powerful, and shut down MEN once and for all! They are the people you need to fear!”

“The World Baseball Classic is coming to Cassadaigua very soon. We will have the chance to showcase our great nation to the world, and we want the world to enjoy what we are really all about. We are not just like everyone else! Trust me, if you do not protest against the ways of the nation, you do not have to worry about us. Go to the games, go out, and have fun. Enjoy Cassadaigua. You will only be at risk if you choose to join the protestors.”


Grande Mountain Police are investigating the video and trying to determine as much as they can about it, but are being tight lipped about it. Andrea Hillman, spokeswoman for the GMPD told us, “We take offense to those who are saying that we are not trying. We are doing everything we possibly can, but this was a well organized attack. It takes time. We’re significantly upping our presence in the streets to make sure that there will not be another attack, and we will make sure that this group referenced in the video is eliminated. But it takes time, give us time.”


Queen Cassie II also issued a statement this morning,

“On behalf of the Royal Family, I want to express my extreme condolences to the friends and families of those lost in the senseless tragedy that occurred in Grande Mountain. Over the years, Male Equality Now has been a peaceful group, and I have had many productive conversations with Mr. Gavin (MEN President Patrick I. Gavin). We do not agree on several things, but that has not stopped us from being cordial, or from us stopping their protests and right to express themselves. MEN is not a threat to the country, and those responsible must be brought to justice immediately! I have spoken to the authorities in Grande Mountain, and they tell me they are encouraged with what they know, but do not want to get into specifics.....

I realize that this comes as we begin to celebrate the beginning of the World Baseball Classic. I have had representatives from several delegations express concerns over what happened. I tried to ensure them that we will not allow it again, as security will be escalated to a high level. Typically, at a MEN protest, security is not needed to be that high. But we will change that now, and especially in the areas hosting World Baseball Classic games.

We will investigate whether or not Grande Mountain can be a safe option to host games over the next couple days. All concerns expressed from world leaders or representatives are duly noted. I hope you also understand that you cannot rush to act, because a reaction based on emotion can cause more harm then good in the long run.”


The statement was issued prior to the release of the Spacebook Live video. When the Queen got word of the video, she issued another statement, which is as follows:

“This is the rambling of a deranged lunatic. Whoever she is, and whoever follows her, will swiftly be brought to harsh justice. Anyone with any tips on getting her locked up immediately, please contact the GMPD if you have not already.”

SCHILTZBERGERS PAY TRIBUTE TO FALLEN HEROES

Last night, there was a horrible atrocity in Grande Mountain, Cassadaigua. During a protest for men's rights led by the group MEN, a riot broke out and eight male victims were severely injured by gunshot wounds, six of them fatally, creating a terrible spectacle of violence and terror in Cassadaigua right before the final tournament for the title is about to start in WBC 40. Following the incident, there was a great international outcry of people protesting this terrible shooting. As tragic as it is, the legacy of these six men who died is a resurgence of meninism in their honor and a fight for men's rights in the Cassadaigan community.

In Schiltzberg, there was a great outcry and some amount of fear, since Schiltzberg had officially clinched a playoff spot, meaning that their team would definitely be going to Cassadaigua, and their players are all men. Many people have voiced concerns for the safety of the Schiltzbergian players in the upcoming weeks. The Cassadaigan hosting commission has ensured the world that safety is their priority and special security measures will be implemented during the tournament for the protection of the players and their fans. For those planning on actually attending the games, do not let these events prevent you from going. Remember, this is a major event that is being broadcast worldwide, and maximum security measures are being taken for the safety of everyone involved. There have been other terrorist scares in recent WBCs, but never any that actually affected the tournament. Honestly, you would probably be more likely to be killed in a fatal accident on your way to the ballpark than you would be to be killed in a terrorist attack or anything like that. There have also been talks about boycotting, but please don't. Folks, there are already so many things that tear nations apart, but international sports seem to be the one thing that unifies everything. Don't make sporting events like the WBC so political, because that really kills the fun and the unity that is brought on by these games.

Before taking the field in today's game against Free Republics in Royal Dome, a game that resulted in a 4-2 loss, the Schiltzbergers, an all male team, held a tribute for the six fallen Cassadaigan heroes. They introduced a pink patch on the left chests of their jerseys with the number six on it, honoring the six fallen victims. Many of the players and staff have vocally spoken out against the social injustices of the host nation and have called on them to change. The Grand Duke himself spoke out in a press conference.

"Cassadaigua is a great nation. Last year, I had the honor of meeting their queen. They are very good people. Unfortunately, every group of very good people has a smaller group of not so good people that tries to drag it down. The views of those people that committed these great crimes against humanity do not represent the views held by the Cassadaigan community. However, the Cassadaigan government must reject those actions made by these terrorists and must make political changes accordingly. They must recognize those ideals, those rights, those liberties that those six men saw to be worth dying for."

This terrible event has gotten such media coverage mostly due to the fact that a sporting event was held there. This event must not be used as a means of dividing those nations apart, but rather, the emphasis should be on that which the fallen heroes were fighting for. A positive of this horrible event is that hopefully meninism will be better recognized and represented in Cassadaigua, and the legacy of the fallen is that they will not have died in vain, but they will be martyrs for the noble cause that they were fighting for.

3 games remain as Confederates pray that they continue to lead to progress to the top 16.

The Confederates have a 2 game lead over their closet rivals -Anthor- and Scootalove and there goal is to keep that lead.

The Confederates will need to focus on 2 out of 3 wins for a comfortable win. Or 1 win with their rivals falling short of a win. With -Anthor - and Scootalove going up against eachother West Phoenicia can breathe easy that they will slide into the top 16.

Confederate coach Mary Zomdonia has expressed this is quite achievable and she is extremely proud of her team who have slowly started making a name for themselves in the international community.

West Phoenicia's threat of a boycott against Cassadaigua is still on the table, they have not seen enough done to fuel the tension after the deadly protests.

Many of the Confederates have pledged they are willing to attend as long as Cassadaigua as they are allowed to bring along their own private security detail and access to a hotel that is restricted to the public.

Jack watched the TV warily as the newswoman described the shooting in Grande Mountain. It wasn't as clear cut to most of the team as it was even yesterday, but Jack still didn't give a shit. "Hey, maybe if enough teams protest we can get in on default."

The whole team, who had been sitting in silence, laughed.

"Get a first round bye, maybe?"

Dermot wasn't so sure. "I love how we're fixing to walk into a country where men are just totally treated like dogs. What if these Megan's Mission bitches decide to turn on the teams, especially the ones with no women, like us?"

"We beat the shite out of 'em."

Everyone looked at Michael.

"What?"

Jack smirked. "Didn't strike me as the type. I mean I don't disagree."

Everyone else nodded. If there was one guy in the locker whom, upon first glance, no one would want to cross, it was Michael. He stood 6'5", 270, and had arms the size of trucks.

"Mike, we'd be guests in their country. One of us gets in a fight we might get booted," Rory said.

"I'm with Mike," Jack retorted. "Only treat them with respect if they treat us with respect."

"Here, here," Shane agreed.

The rest of the team began nodding and mumbling in agreement.

Match Report: Price, Reed, Russell and McPherson Clear the Way for Victory
Dominant performances from the two pitchers and hitters leads to the team taking two of three wins in this latest match roundup

Vaumort, Anthor(Herald) — This is it boys, we're coming down to our final three matches, and things are starting to definitely heat up even more in our Group Play. After this latest match round up, were we played Somersville, Equestrian States and Bongo Johnson, we managed to hammer home some thoroughly well played victories against the first two, but in the highly strategicly important third match against the Johnson team who is just a few points behind us in fourth, we fell up short in a time where we, honestly, didn't want to and could barely afford to; the results have seen us remain in second, ahead of Scootalove City by a collection of runs, and that's it. Thankfully, we'll be playing them first in this next upcoming roundup, and we absolutely need to win, it's a can't-afford-to-lose situation. Now, let's go over the matches we just finished.

Denzel Price took the mound as we took on the Somersville team on an away game, seeking to rack up his 5th win of the Classic, and early on, that effort looked almost certainly doomed when he gave up a double to centerfield and then a homer to right back-to-back in the third inning; Albert Hough tried to answer the call to score runs and slammed a solo shot blast in the following inning, and Sean McPherson joined him in the sixth with a one-run homerun with two outs, at the bottom of the 6th. Price remained pretty solid until the 7th inning when Adler had him pulled, Bryan Richardson coming in for his 8th relief appearance in this Classic, entering with a solid 1.58 WHIP and 12 K's, this would end up being his longest stretch as he ended up finishing the game, pitching for the next three innings and giving up only a single hit in the 8th, with a combined 6 punchouts and an a sole walk. He even managed to get to take the win after Russell and Greer hit back to back singles, and then Green comes to bat and drives Russell home on a longshot double to the left field wall, a walk-off double to bring the game home for the Thunderheads.

In the next game, Francis Reed, you know he's been having quite the Classic; a whopping 8-2, 58 strikeouts, and a WHIP that just barely sits at over 1, with an elite .98, ERA around 2.11; he came into this game ready to snipe the heck out of that strike zone and rack up some more K's, which is what's so respectable about him, he doesn't have overwhelming stuff, I mean his fastball barely breaks 97, and his breaking balls are usually in the low to mid 80s, but his control and movement, are second to none within the ABL, and it's what helped him earn Pitcher of the Year this past season, with an incredible 267 strikeouts. His performance in this game against Equestrian States, well, it was one for the history books. He collected his fourth complete game of the Classic, and ended up giving up only a single run off of a solo shot to right field in the 8th, adding an elite 15 strikeouts and only a single walk to his record today as he picked up his 9th win, off of the back of some incredible firepower from the Thunderheads' hitters; McPherson and Hough each hit two home runs, McPherson had to one up and hit a third, Russell went 6-6 today as he powered up 4 RBI's and got himself 3 runs as well. Aitken and Delgado also contributed hits towards the grand slam blasted home by McPherson on his second home run, and the Thunderheads finish their largest win in the Classic yet, 10-1.

The final game, well, it was a demonstration of the problems that the team is still facing, and needs to fix rapidly; they managed to score 13 runs in the previous two games, but then struggle to score a measely two runs this game, all of which would go for naught after Clyde Cherry blows the save, and the game, off of a three-run home run he gives up in the bottom of the 8th; Woodward didn't do terrible, 3 ER's, 7 K's and 7 IP's, it was a solid performance from a starter, that would have earned him the win if he could have gotten some run support. Russell surprisingly only managed a single hit going 1-4, McPherson's bat was oddly quiet after going long three times last night and the only two runs scored comes off of a blast from Hough, and then a base clearing triple from Delgado, who sent home Greer who had hit a double in the previous at bat.

The upcoming games are going to be incredibly critical for the Thunderheads as they seek to earn their first qualification into playoffs in their entire Classic history, and they're going to have some pretty fierce competition as they head into the next matches; Scootalove has to be taken down, and if they could wrack up a solid sweep, take home all three wins and call in some luck, they may even overtake the group leader.

ROCKETS CLINCH GROUP TITLE

Many nations are feeling a sense of urgency as we close out the qualifying portion of the World Baseball Classic. Just three games remain, and many nations are in must win situations. Newmanistan is not one of them, because everything is wrapped up. The Rockets have not only clinched a playoff spot, they have clinched the group title, with a 6-0 record against chief rival Union of Socialist Alpine Republics being the main reason why qualifying was rather easily. In the final head to head matchup, Courtney Duvall, unbelievably, tossed her third friggin’ shutout of qualifying. She pitched complete games in all six games, with the three shutouts. Only six runs, all earned, were scored against her. Duvall will now rest as she awaits what new team she will be pitching against.


Meanwhile, the Rockets domination of the Bison has put the USAR in a precarious situation. They have not been as strong in the second half, and have recently limped to a 15-12 record. One game behind them, is Zwangzug, and they control their own destiny as if they defeat the Bison in MD29, they’d have the head to head tiebreaker on them. Of course, the Zebras would have to win their other two, or hope for as many other losses by the Bison as they lost themselves. The Rockets will feel the effects, as Zwangzug could be in a must win situation against us on the finally matchday of the year. And as if Courtney Duvall hadn’t done enough to annoy the Bisons, coach Ashley Stevens announced some lineup changes for the MD 30 game against Zwangzug. 19-year old Hannah Lee, the phenom with superstar written all over her, has essentially traveled with the team just to get the experience, and has only tossed one inning so far. Stevens declared that Lee will start against Zwangzug. “Hannah’s here to get the international experience, so with everything wrapped up, I think that’s a great shot for her,” Stevens added before stating further lineup changes, “We’ll also be playing a completely different lineup. This will be our lineup.”

Ashley gave me a lineup card, which read as followed, for the MD 30 game.

Into the next games, Scootalove City crushed all resistance and can get into the second spot it deserves.

In the first game, Bastion Rogers, Paul Minus and, Amalthea Beagle nearly fully shut down West Phoencia.

Second game with Bongo Johnson, Amalthea Beagle in the end, and Stan Gagnon at the start helped immensely with making sure Bongo Johnson never had a chance.

The grand slam by Dave 'The King' Haggard will be legendary.

And Zoey Derpus pulled this off in the next game. The only advice I can give them is keep up the momentum. We are so close to the second place and getting to the postseason. We were robbed last time. Let's make sure that never happens again.

"I've got an e-mail here from Erin in Zwischen who asks me what was the hardest part of being the Composite Minister? And what was the best? Thanks, Erin. I know a lot of people will expect me to say something about the time-dilation devices here, and certainly while I've received a lot of blowback once that was made public, I guess the furor has kind of died down. Maybe that coincided with me leaving office, I don't know. So I'd say that the really hardest part was actually those first few weeks, in the aftermath of the Freedom Fighters blowing stuff up, not really being sure if it would happen again or how, or who. At least when I was working behind the scenes I felt confident that taking some measure of action, if sparingly, was the right thing to do. At first I was tentative to do anything at all; I didn't want to make being Zwangzugian something to be ashamed of. I guess the future will say whether or not I got it right.

As for the best, that would just be the little things in Parliament. Breaking ties, and watching how factions reformed from one day to the next as different issues rose to prominence. It kept things from getting too contentious to know that you might have to work with someone you formerly opposed the following week to pass another issue that matters deeply to you, and getting to see how that played out from the inside was pretty amazing. Of course, my decisions could only keep half of them happy, but that comes with the territory!

Anyway, Rodin-Lous induces a liner to second, and Hansen will spear it, but the damage has been done as Sandberg strike here for three in the fourth...

...I've got an e-mail here from...uh, Erin in Zwischen, and she asks, is there anything you regret or wish you had done differently? It's maybe too soon to say, but perhaps I might have taken in a sports game or two earlier now that I see it's actually not so bad. I think in general things were less catastrophic than I imagined, I don't feel like I have been yanked onto a different path of time dilation that would have prematurely rushed me through my national duties, but maybe that's just me exerting my forceful will, who knows? Then again, maybe I would have had to go schmooze with other heads of state and some of them are really obsessed with making things miserable on the time so I'm glad I missed out on that. Uh, swung on and hit well by Volir-Tas, that will make it all the way to the wall, and his double scores two! It's six-three here in the fifth, and the Zebras are still right back in this thing...

The team gathered in the locker room, the crowd thumping in unison outside and seemingly ready to bring the house down on top of them. The bottles of O’Toole whiskey were passed around in silence, the only noise being heard was the muffled chants of the fans.

Jack waited until everyone had a shot in their hands, standing quietly and gazing at his glass as the foot stomping above shook its contents about. “Right… Gentlemen. It’s been a helluva ride.”

Everyone nodded.

“And…it all comes down to tonight, really. I think we all know that.” He paused, thinking of what to say next. He wasn’t much for speeches when he was sober. “And… I just wanted to say, we’ve been playing our asses off this whole bloody time. I mean, we’ve been tearing this shit apart. I’m proud of what we’ve done; I’m proud of everybody here. And I just wanna say, that no matter what happens here… sure as shit it’s been a pleasure to have played alongside all of you.”

This got a rousing response.

“And… if we don’t make it, I don’t think it can be said that we didn’t fight all the way. And it can’t be said we pulled our punches. It can’t be said that we left anything on the table. And we’ll go back to the League and we’ll play against each other and we’ll get into fights and all that shite, but we had this. If nothing else we had this. We were the first: remember that, boys. We were the first.”

“Hell yea,” Liam said as the team shouted their agreement.

“Alright, so no matter what happens, let’s go out there, let’s slug bombs, let’s slug beer, let’s finish this shite off the way we started, with a fuckin’ bang, yea?”

“Yea!” the team replied at once.

“Slainte, boys.”

“Slainte!” everyone shouted at once, then they knocked back their shots, grabbed their gear and headed out the locker room door.

The hall seemed longer than ever before, the crowd noise growing louder and more deafening with each step in their spiked cleats. The lights grew bright and brighter as they went, until like they jumped out of hyperspace, they arrived at the dugout.

The noise was ear-rattling as Jack took the field, followed by Michael, Shane, Dermot, and the rest. Jack took his place in right field, looking around at the capacity crowd in what was usually an association football stadium. Parts that hadn’t been used for seating for the WBC were now full, and suddenly nearly 50,000 people were screaming drunkenly and jumping around for their home team. Jack’s heart began to flutter as he thought of every baseball game he would play from now on looking like this. He thought of Vivian, and the NBL and how, whether or not they won tonight, they had cemented themselves in the hearts and minds of all of Tenburg.

Tonight…finally… baseball was king.

Alea Iacta Est - Part VI

Thirty minutes before the most important game of the season. Lose against Tenburg, and Hicaña would need a perfect storm of results - two Phoenix wins and two Metro losses - to qualify to the playoffs. Win against Tenburg? Well, with two games to play, such a result would put the Phoenixes in very good shape to make the playoffs for a second straight Classic. It was going to be a challenge. But Alex Cameron never shied away from a challenge.

Well, as long as it related to baseball. But he'd been shying away from a lot of challenges recently. Arturo Salvatore (Alex still didn't know what everyone hated about the guy) was an unpopular figure in Hicaña, and his support of the President of the Sixth Republic of Hicaña wasn't going over very well. He'd been asked many times by his players and members of the media to back down. Maybe a different man and a different manager would've done it. But by supporting Salvatore and gaining his backing, Alex Cameron had become the most powerful man in Hicañan baseball. And that wasn't something he was going to give up.

But that wasn't important now. Everything he'd been working on with Salvatore would be for naught if they lost this game. The Phoenixes had been struggling after the loss of nearly forty percent of their players. But Cameron now had what the HBA had stopped him from having before - a group of players with total loyalty to him. And that was pretty important. Contrary to media reports in Tenburg, he'd reshuffled the rotation so that his ace, Erik Sepulveda, would get the start. Arroyo and Torres would get the next two starts. But he needed his best players against Tenburg.

He handed in his lineup card, ravaged by boycotts and injuries. The Phoenixes were a wounded team, the damage barely papered-over by a legion of Llamanean-based mercenaries. The Hicañans were in disarray. But they had Alex Cameron. His team, his association, his players, his managing. And that would have to be enough.

TIGERS IN SOLID POSITION

There are still three games to play at the World Baseball Classic, but after twenty-seven have been played we have a better idea of who's going through to the playoffs now. Already, seven teams (including our Tigers) have punched their ticket to Cassadaigua, with nine more to be decided in the remaining three games. And for Super-Llamaland, it's an honor that's absolutely deserved. The Tigers have the fifth-most runs scored of any team in the league at 137 (good for roughly five a game), behind Nova Anglicana, Cassadaigua, Newmanistan, and Schiltzberg. Additionally, they've managed to concede an incredible 77 runs, better than any other team in the world bar Schiltzberg. Along with Schiltzberg and Newmanistan, they're one of just three teams to have a sub-3.00 team ERA, indicating dominance on both sides of the game. Offense, pitching, and defense have all been sublime for the Tigers so far - this could be their most complete team since the undefeated campaign of WBC31.

It all starts with run prevention. The Tigers' defense has always been superb, and the introduction of Isak Gunnlaugsson has only made it better. The infielders are all the best at their position, and the outfield is absolutely insane - easily the most athletic outfield in the world, in fact. But a strong defense isn't all you need to keep runs out. You also need top-tier pitching, and the Tigers' pitching has been nothing short of world-class. Justin Zheng has continued to force himself into the argument for the world's best pitcher, throwing two shutouts and a no-hitter in six starts, and he's only going to get better in the playoffs. The 2-4 starters - Gilson-Engen, Wagner, and Wu - have been phenomenal as well, and even fifth starter Axel Florentssen will be a great addition to the bullpen.

The attack is running like a well-oiled machine as well. It all starts with the one-two punch of Markus Wright and Sofia Rasmussen, but the lineup is completely stacked. It follows the Llamanean ideal of speedy contact hitters with enough power to consistently get extra bases, and this lineup indeed oozes athleticism from Wright to eighth hitter Hector Rinaldi. It hasn't been top-tier, but it's been consistently excellent. And that's all this Tigers team should need.

Are there concerns? Sure. The bullpen has had a few hiccups, although they've been very solid overall, and the team has been just 12-6 after a sizzling 9-0 start. But it's hard not to like the Tigers team that superstar manager Laurent Mårtensson has assembled. They've won their last three games, giving the Llamaneans a chance to go into Cassadaigua with a six-game winning streak, and with three games to play, they're one of three teams with the chance to snag the first seed in the playoffs. If they could avoid Schiltzberg and Newmanistan until the finals, it would give them a much better chance to win it all.

But the Tigers are playing as well as ever. And even if they're drawn against a Schiltzberg, Newmanistan, or Nova Anglicana, I think Llamanean fans will be able to expect their team to keep on rolling to that elusive fourth classic.

As the story of events surrounding the WBC's host nation continued to unfold, many thought the Queen of the Tainese isle would retract her statement. A terror group just claimed responsibility for the event Queen Kyou tried to spin onto the protestors, at least to her own citizens.

"I stand by my nation's patriotic offer to send support to the people of Cassadaigua." The Queen did not expand on the fact that the "support" she pledged was to send the Tainese Armed Forces' most highly trained and well armed special forces unit to help defend against those 'extremist protestors'. It didn't help that the unit was also all-female due to a policy that some might exaggerate as sexist.

"Violence should not be the answer", the Queen added. "We hope the populace there can avoid similar situations."

She smiled coldly, eyes never changing expression and said, "Perhaps the protestors could accept that things are not so bad for them. Think of some of the other nations in the multiverse. I hope our two nations can work together for future prosperity. A bright future is ahead for Tai and Cassadaigua."

Meanwhile, the Tainese found themselves the elephant in the room in a four way tie that drew international attention to Group 6. The Gold Sharks held onto the tie until falling to GGS on Match Day 27. The Tai are the "elephant', because everyone is talking about the tie, but not mentioning the Tainese.

It is fitting that GGS knocked the Sharks from the tie. Success against GGS is what boosted the Tai into the battle for the lead. For a short time, the Gold Sharks sat 1st in Group 6. The Tai lost that with a tepid 1-2 3 game stretch. They still managed to fight back into the tie until the last game.

The Sharks fell one game behind with Mount Pleasant. It would all come down to the last 3 game stretch. It was unlikely for the Sharks to pull ahead. It was far from impossible though. The Sharks did once before. Most likely, they used their luck for that run, as well as their energy.

The Tainese have been looking a bit fatigued as the season draws to a close. They'll need to work on conditioning to increase their chances of success next season. They've shown to have a decent team. The Sharks kept up with every team in the Group. Many would have expected GGS and Maklohi Vai to run away with this Group.

Instead, thet've had to scrap with the Tainese, Mount Peasant and Darmen, which has been a slight notch above the previous two teams.

Hinto Sun-Kyo, a famous sports predictionist, came up with his final standings for Group 6.
Maklohi Vai - 1st by 2 wins
Darmen - 2nd behind MKV by 1 win
Mount Pleasant + Tainese - Tied 2 games behind MKV

People across Tai and South Tropical Asiata placed bets in sportsbars and casinos.

The players were focused on taking things inning by inning and closing out the Group Stage in a way that lives up to the season they've had so far.

Home vs. Hicana; BOT 4; 2 OUT; 2-0 Hicana

Jack made sure to pat Dermot on the shoulder as he came back from popping out into left field. He didn’t slug any beer this time as he approached the batter’s box, which seemed to disappoint Hicana’s catcher, Hechavarria.

“No booze tonight?”

“Eh,” Jack replied. He was lost in his thoughts. Conner Curren was at third, just dying to get home. On first, by virtue of a rather goofy play, was Finbar Fallon.

We’re gonna win this fuckin’ game, starting right now, he thought to himself as he readied for the first pitch. It came in the form of a breaker, which Jack swung at and sent fowl to the right. The crowd responded with the traditional reaction for when a footballer missed the net by a mile: “Heeeyyyyyyy!” Jack shook his head quickly and readied for another pitch.

Hicana’s ace, Erik Sepulveda, looked a little flustered suddenly, as he threw a ball way outside. The umpire called “Ball!” and the crowd reacted with the same “Heeeyyyyy!” as before. As Jack readied for the next pitch, he locked eyes with Sepulveda, who, after having to glance away, wound up and sent a pitch way high for ball two. The crowd cheered, and Jack readied himself for another one, stoic, unresponsive to the increased crowd noise.

The pitch came inside and Jack made contact again, sending it right into the dirt in front of him; foul two. He huffed, stepping outside of the batter’s box for a moment to adjust his gloves. Upon stepping back in, he took another ball from Sepulveda and slung it into the dirt. “Damnit,” he growled as he watched Hechavarria throw a new ball to Sepulveda. He then raised his bat again, ready for another.

This one came low and fast, and Jack crushed it foul down the right field line, earning another “Heeeyyyyyy!” The crowd noise increased even more as he readied himself for the next pitch. It also seemed to be getting to Sepulveda, who looked around at the crowd before winding up again.

This pitch came low and inside; so far inside, in fact, that Jack jumped out of the way, watching as it bounced off the catcher’s glove and rolled toward the backstop. “CONOR! COME ON, CONOR!” he roared, waving desperately to his teammate, who scurried in from third to get his team on the board. The audience exploded into a riot around them. Jack rose to his feet, grabbed his bat from the ground, and waited for the Hicanan catcher to return to the box while all his teammates greeted Curren at the dugout with an ice-cold beer. Fallon, meanwhile, had made his way to second in the chaos.

Jack readied himself again, and then clobbered yet another pitch foul down the right field line for another “Heyyyy!” As he stepped out of the batter’s box again, he saw the Hicanan manager, Alex Cameron, come out from the away dugout and speak to Sepulveda. The two conversed for a few moments before Cameron went back to the dugout. Jack stepped into the box again, tapped the clay beneath him twice with the bat, and raised it.

The pitch came with a bit more heat on it, and a little higher than most of the others. Jack threw everything he had behind his swing sending it… FAIR!... down the right field line and over the first baseman’s head. Jack sprinted towards first as the crowd exploded into pandemonium, keeping an eye on the ball as it rolled all the way to the wall, staying right along the line the whole way, the farthest possible spot away from the right fielder as it could be without going foul. Jack rounded first and headed for second, coming across standing up and hopping on the bag emphatically as he finished.

He looked at home plate to see everyone crowding around Fallon. A giant lump overcame his throat, leaving him speechless as he took in the crowd and the score, so he simply raised a fist in the air, holding it up as a not-so-subtle “fuck you” to every pundit, fan, whathaveyou, who said that Tenburg couldn’t make the playoffs as an unranked team.

He had just taken them from 2-0 to 2-2; next, they needed to take the lead.

BOT 6; 1 OUT; 2-2

Jack sat in the dugout next to Michael, the pair clinking together two plastic cups and throwing back the beer within. Jack slugged a big gulp and threw the empty cup away, focusing his attention back to the game. Cameron had pulled Sepulveda after the game had been tied up. Now the reliever looked to put down Shane, who waited patiently for the pitch. He wobbled back and forth as he readied his bat… or maybe that was just Jack’s vision.

The fastball came and the crack of Shane’s bat could have been heard all the way up in Crosskeys. Jack leaped from his seat and watched the ball scream into the left field stands for the go-ahead run. As the rest of the team began howling and screaming with excitement, Jack grabbed two plastic cups, filled each with the “sports drink keg” which was filled with beer, and went to the dugout steps as Shane made his trot. Coming around to home, he was smiling from ear to ear. He shouted something but no one could hear him over the crowd noise. Jack handed him a cup and the two locked arms on the steps, throwing back their cups and chugging their beers whole, to the delight of the crowd, whose noise levels were now shaking the ground beneath the players’ feet.

TOP 9; 2 OUT; 3-2 Tenburg

By this point, Jack was so drunk he couldn’t see straight. He shook his head back and forth to clear the cobwebs as Logan and Conor decided on a pitch. Logan wound up, pitched, and got what Jack thought was a strike. Judging by the crowd reaction, he must have been right.

“C’mon, ye wee shite, let’s end this.”

Logan and the rest of the team could have been melting for all he was seeing. The whole stadium was rocking back and forth. Logan threw another pitch, and Jack heard the distinctive crack of a bat.

And it was heading towards him.

“Shiiiit.”

Jack ran towards where it was coming down, his balance being so far off he threw up in his mouth. He went down on one knee and used both hand to make the out, and the ensuing jolt of noise almost broke his eardrum. He raised his free fist again, pumping it a few times before beginning to jog toward the dugout. As Michael and some others came over to greet them, he waved them off, spewing the vomit in his mouth into the corner of the dugout before dogpiling with his teammates near the mound.

West Phoenicia Celebrates





The West Phoenician Confederates were in full celebration mode today after matches 28, 29 and 30 saw West Phoenicia dominate all three games against their competitors. Continuing their winning steak and allowing them to finish in the number one spot in their group with 22 wins and 8 losses.

West Phoenicia next takes on the nation of Maklohi Vai in the round of 16. West Phoenicia plans to dominate the round of 16 taking out Maklohi Vai out in the first 3 games instead of dragging it out to the best of 5.

Extra practise has been called for batters whilst pitchers have been given a more easy training schedule to allow them to rest before the round of 16.

The Confederates are hoping for simillar results to the World Baseball Classic #39 where they were able to take out teams higher ranking than themselves and making it through to the semi finals where they ended up placing 4th.

The goal is to win the finals a goal team coach Mary Zomdonia says is possible or at least outdo their last results by placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd with such results it will kept them firmly in the top 10 rankings.

The nation of West Phoenicia was in full celebration mode as die hard Confederate fans partied throughout the night after which followed a mad rush for fans to purchase tickets for the games against Maklohi Vai.

Queen Alotta Diesel-Bush who is caring for the nation whilst her husband is away on diplomatic business praised the Confederates for putting West Phoenicia on the sporting map. While she would not be able to attend any of the games she has given her best wishes and has offered prayers to the gods, goddess and animal deities for the Confederates to be successful.
