WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 40- The Colossal Follow Up

Happy Birthday, World Baseball Classic! At 40, you are officially an old sporting competition.

The nation of Cassadaigua is honored to have the opportunity to host this event. In the last Classic, several nations, including ourselves, returned for what was dubbed the Colossal Champions Cup. After a fun competition, how many of those champions would follow up their return for a second appearance in World Baseball Classic 40? All of them! They are just some of the 48 total nations who are going to step up to the plate for this Classic.

Who are these 48?

48- Siroy (Puppet of Maklohi Vai)

Are you planning to dominate this competition, but what to know exactly how to go about it?

First: Create a roster. This will get you a roster bonus. Not all rosters get the same bonus, though, as some are made to be real fancy and look like a ton of time and effort was spent in preparing it. They will get the higher roster bonus. But, if all you want to do is list a bunch of names, you will still get something.

Then: Roleplay, roleplay, roleplay. You can have success here as a first time nation, but you have to work for it, too.

Within the roster, many people also provide descriptive information about their home stadiums. Half of your qualifying games will be played within your country, and this a great chance to showcase your venues to the world.

IMPORTANT: When creating a roster, you should include the following information and the specific corresponding answer for your nation. This is important, because the person who roleplays the game first is the one who determines how a score is arrived at (assuming they have roleplayed a game summary). The answers to these questions are whether or not they are able to do the following things concerning your nation.

RP Permissions:
Choose my run-scorers: Yes/No
Choose my lineup: Yes/No
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Yes/No
Godmod scoring events: Yes/No
RP injuries to my players: Yes/No
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes/No
Eject my players: Yes/No
DH used at home: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No
Other Info:

What they mean:
Choose my run-scorers: Can the opponent decide who scored for your team. Note that this includes ONLY how you’re individual players may have played, on an individual level. If you’re opponent says their starting pitcher struck out 15 of your hitters in their 1-0 win, then that is fine regardless of your answer, because it is a direct individual fact about the performances of their pitcher. If you answered no here, and they then said a particular batter struck out four times, then and only then do they violate this permission. Moral of the story, saying no here gives you control over how your players play, only. Not how the opponent’s players play. Most users answer yes to this.

Choose my lineup: Allows the opponent to determine any old lineup for your team. Most teams will include a lineup, and set this permission as no, and to follow their lineup. However, if you don’t really care, feel free to say yes.

Follow my Pitching Rotation: Same general idea as Choose my lineup, but with the rotation. Tip: Always check your opponent’s RP for their prior game to see if they declared a starting pitcher for your game, as well.

Godmod Scoring Events: This allows your opponent to be very specific, in complete detail, about your runs scored.

RP Injuries to your players: Answer accordingly. Some nations will include a caveat here that they are allowed, but only to say a play was hurt and nothing else, so that they can be the one to determine what happened.

Godmod Injuries: Taking the above to the next level. Can they do whatever they want in regards to injuries. Answer accordingly.

DH Used at home: Whether or not we use the DH is determined by the home team. (Much like it is in Major League Baseball). Here you are saying whether or not the DH is used when you are home.

Eject My Players: Can they eject your players? Some nations will include a caveat here as well that “for every one you eject your team, you can eject one/two/or more on mine.”

Godmod Other Events: We get silly on NS Sports. You have to have fun once in a while, after all. What this is asking if is the opponent can RP something completely crazy and unrealistic about the game, such as “the catcher put a spell on the basestealer as they were running, to make them fall.” or, “The pitched ball became invisible, so the batter had no hope.”, or even “Space aliens invaded, and decided they liked our flag better, so they helped our team with their significantly advanced technology”. If this kind of fun is for you, then put yes. If not, then put no. If you’re open to it, but don’t want to be completely caught off-guard, a message to say “telegram me your idea first” is common.

Other Info: Is there other information about your team you want us to know about? This is usually about a team’s playing style. A nation with an aggressive playing style may say they always look to take the extra base, and want to steal a lot of bases. A nation that wants to have their team to be explosive may want to say they score most runs via the long ball. Or, it could be to say something about your pitchers, like to never have a starter go more then 5 innings.

WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 40
TRAVEL GUIDE

Are you coming to Cassadaigua to enjoy the World Baseball Classic? Great! Here’s what you will need to know.

1) Where is Cassadaigua? How do I get there?

Cassadaigua is located in the region of Rushmore, and more specifically south-central Rushmore.

The best recommendation to get here is to fly in, unless you are from nearby in Rushmore, you may just want to drive or take a train. All Cassadagan cities have a major airport, and the nation has an advanced rail system as well. If you insisted on traveling by sea, there are some easily attainable port cities to make it very convenient, but we suggest flying in.

2) Will I be safe? What is crime like?

Cassadaigua is no more or no less safe then any other nation. Some consider our crime rates to be a little high, but law enforcement and a general security presence will be very apparent and will protect you. Things still get seedy in the Grande Mountain area from time to time, but our security will try their best to keep the men's rights protests to a minimum.

3) Tell me more about your female-dominated society. Are male tourists safe?

Cassadaigua’s society is different then what is seen throughout most of the world. In our nation, the female is the dominant gender and is superior to the male. This should not be surprising if you have followed our own national sport teams in even the slightest of ways. There are some groups who feel that men are greatly oppressed in our nation, but that is not really the case. If you are a man, and you are visiting Cassadaigua, as long as you are aware of our somewhat different culture, you should not have a tough time fitting in. After all, Cassadagan men that play by the rules here and respect their role can be very successful themselves. As long as you respect our culture, you should be fine while you are here. If you act disrespectful, then don’t be surprised if you are soon put in your place. You are expected to follow all Cassadagan laws, even if it is not a law in your own country,

4) I’ve been to nations that have talking ponies, or banned cars, or taxes on every little thing. Should I expect anything like this?

Cassadagans love horses, but there are no talking ponies here. At least not that we know of. If we have any sentient immigrants from nations like Equestrian States, they keep a very low profile. Cars are very much a way of life, and our taxes aren’t anything out of the ordinary, and if anything are a little lower then average. Cassadaigua is modern, economic powerhouse. There are no unusual factors associated with the country, other then the gender differences.

Socially, Cassadaigua is open to members of all faiths, and we respect your right to worship your respective deity in the way you see fit; or to not worship one at all. Homosexuality is accepted in the country, though we can’t promise that some random drunk in the stands or on the streets won’t make offensive comments.

As far as drinking is concerned, the legal age is 18, though many get away with underage drinking as it is not as aggressively policed as it may be in other lands. However, do not drink and drive. If you are caught, you will have a greater jail sentence then you might be expecting, and if you kill anyone by drunk driving, you will receive the death penalty.

Smoking anywhere in public is banned, but legal in your own home. This applies to both cigarettes and marijuana. All other recreational drugs are banned.

5) Where will the games be? Tell me about the cities, please.

Games will be held in Concord Heights, Brattleboro, Grande Mountain, Rutland, Winchester, New Lakeland, Victoriaville, and Starksville.

Concord Heights- This is the nation capital, and the city has hosted many international championships before, including the World Baseball Classic 18 title series. You’ll find the city in northeast Cassadaigua, and there are plenty of things to do while here. We won’t get into all of them, because if its on your mind, simply put, its in Concord Heights. Within the city, you will find the most traditional Cassadagan citizens; the ones least likely to be listening to MEN (Male Equality Now) or any other of men’s rights messages. The University of Concord Heights is the nation’s most accredited higher learning institution, but if you want to leave Cassadaigua looking better to impress people at home, check out Concord Heights Beauty School for all kind of tips on looking your best, and museums dedicated specifically to the ultimate in vanity.

Stadium Dimensions (in feet from home plate): LF- 355 LCF- 375 CF- 405 RCF- 375 RF- 355
Capacity: 72,000

Brattleboro- The most rapidly growing city in Cassadaigua recently topped Grande Mountain in terms of population. Brattleboro sits immediately alongside the border between us and Sicoutimont. The technological age is what has caused the rise of this city, thanks in large part to the prestigious Brattleboro Technical Institute. Graduates remained committed to the area, and are since having families of their own. Overall, there is a younger demographic here, age wise, and that coupled with the name of the city has led to others to call its residents “Brats”.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 346 LCF- 352 CF- 369 RCF- 360 RF- 352 (walls are 12-feet high in all but CF. There, it is 16 feet)
Capacity: 70,000

Grande Mountain- Another large city, there has been some controversy in Grande Mountain lately. Most of that pertains to the local university, and you should be safe as long as you mind your own business. It is expected that there will be protests, but since its not really a baseball issue, maybe it won’t be bad. Lets cross our fingers. Purchasing added insurance on your rental car is highly recommended.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 350 LCF- 390 CF- 412 RCF- 382 RF- 354
Capacity: 65,000

Rutland- A port city in southeastern Cassadaigua, Rutland sometimes gets lost in the shuffle with the other cities in tournaments like this. It could use a bit of a makeover, but local officials have concentrated efforts on the port itself, and as such the rest of the city could appear ignored. It is true that many are migrating out of Rutland because of this, and it’s possible that it might not appear as a host city much longer.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 330 LCF- 372 CF- 404 RCF- 379 RF- 346
Capacity: 54,000

Winchester- The anti-Brattleboro in that while Brattleboro is a younger city, demographically, Winchester is a place that a lot of retired people have migrated too, to get away from big city life. In the process, they created a big city themselves, but you’ll notice that this city doesn’t have same kind of pizzazz as others. You’ll find more bingo halls then bars in the city, and residents only agree to allow the city to be used for international events because of the money you’ll bring in to the city. So that they can gamble it away playing bingo.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 339 LCF- 368 CF- 400 RCF- 363 RF- 333
Capacity: 58,000

New Lakeland- If you want to enjoy Cassadaigua and go to a city with the most gender equality, then New Lakeland is the spot for you. The reason is, that this used to be a city in Secristan before Cassadaigua took it over, therefore its origins aren’t the same. As time has gone by, Cassadagan lifestyle has begun to take it over, but there many relics of its history still prevalent on the streets. It’s the most capitalist city in the country, but given that origin, that shouldn’t be a surprise.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 370 LCF- 402 CF- 420 RCF- 390 RF- 345
Capacity: 88,000

Starksville- Like Brattleboro, this is a growing city, and it’s also beginning to replace Rutland as being the nations top port city, given that it’s closer to Concord Heights then Rutland may be. It’s a great spot for beaches and nightlife, though doesn’t have a lot of history to go with it.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 347 LCF- 370 CF- 411 RCF- 373 RF- 356
Capacity: 60,000

Victoriavile- As the most populous city in Southwestern Cassadaigua, Victoriaville again returns as a host city to give Dagans living in this area some close games to travel too. There’s nothing really wrong with the city, it’s just not as big as the others.

Stadium Dimensions: LF- 326 LCF- 361 CF- 399 RCF- 370 RF- 322
Capacity: 55,000

Tennish National Baseball Team

Nickname: Metros, due to being based in Tallow, Tenburg’s largest city

Baseball, although not nearly as popular in Tenburg as association football, auto racing, hockey, or even gridiron football, has a cult following throughout the country. The competition is always close, and a multitude of elite-level pitchers and hitters have made their way into the top series, the NBL. Up until Tenburg’s invitation to the World Baseball Classic—its first sporting invitation in history—baseball had been her best-kept secret. Now, suddenly, the awkward step-child of Tennish sport has become its darling.

Jack Lynch stood stoic in the batter’s box, cigarette hanging from his mouth and sending smoke up his nose, which he huffed away as he raised his bat. It swirled around in the air slowly, like a flag in a calm breeze, before swinging hard at a breaking curveball.

He missed it again.

“Fuck…you,” Jack grumbled, lowering his sunglasses to glare as James Cullen offered a shit-eating grin. Jack always swung at that one. Mark threw his curveball the way most guys threw fastballs. “It’s called an off-speed pitch, y’know, fuck, one’s them’s gonna take yer arm with it someday.”

“Long as it happens after the Classic, I don’t care.”

“Fair enough.” Jack readied himself for another pitch. This one was subtler, breaking further in front of him than before, right into where he preferred to swing. He blasted it up over James’ head and into the ionosphere, and everyone watched as it disappeared out of view when coming near a white, fluffy cloud.

“Yea, see, that’s what’ll happen to ye if yer arm goes,” commented catcher Aidan Murphy, to a few laughs.

K.C. O’Brien, a man much older than any of the others here, whipped out his phone to read a text. “Hate to break up the shenanigans, fellas,” he said, his low voice catching everyone’s attention, “But the trucks are here to load up gear, which means we need to be goin’.”

Jack tossed the old bat away, dropped his cigarette next to the plate and stepped on it. “Right, off we go to… wherever this place is. Cassa-somethin’.”

Cassadaigua. The host nation of the 40th World Baseball Classic. No one here wanted to admit it, but just about everyone had butterflies in their stomachs whenever they saw themselves being talked about on TNSN. They had never received much recognition from their nation before; only when an international body recognized them did the spotlight suddenly shift to them--not that anybody was complaining about their new-found popularity, of course; it was fantastic. But how long would it be until they played their final out in the Classic and it would all disappear again?

Tenburg isn’t exactly baseball country.

All Darmeni home games will be played at Royal Ballpark, capacity 40,000, located in Scott City. The stadium is home to Royal BC.

Darmeni Baseball Style
Offensively, the top of the order has one job and one job only: get on base and stay on base. Contact hitting is the name of the game for those three, as they look to give the cleanup hitter plenty of opportunities for RBI's. For the cleanup hitter, hitting the ball as far as possible will be the most likely course of action, though having men on base while trailing will cause a more conservative approach to be taken. For the remaining batters, the hit and run, as well as conventional base stealing will be utilized. At any point where there are two outs in an inning, hitting for the fences will be likely. In other words, "Go BIG or go home."

Defensively, things will be fairly conventional, with defensive shifts occurring perhaps once every ten games and an extra man being brought into the infield perhaps once per tournament.

And finally, pitching. Strike zone, strike zone, strike zone. Throwing outside of the strike zone is highly frowned upon in Darmeni baseball, so pitch counts will likely always be in favor of the pitcher. That being said, expect a great deal of variance in pitch types, with most pitchers having four or five different pitch types in their repertoire. Some even have as many as seven. Also, Darmeni baseball fans love a good Eephus. Also, no intentional walks, ever. We ain't scared of no one.

Also, you may be wondering why many of the younger players are all switch hitters. In Darmen, all players are taught to bat with both hands, and many continue to do so until their mid to late twenties, when they finally make a decision on how they will bat.

"Elgenstad National Baseball Team"
St. Rita's Parochial Institution for Secondary Education and Baseball

Elgenstad, lacking a professional baseball league, is being represented by the team from St. Rita's Parochial Institution for Secondary Education and Baseball, otherwise known as SRPISEB or simply St. Rita's. This will be the second consecutive Classic in which the school has represented the country. St. Rita's is a high school of dubious repute on the western edge of Byen, Elgenstad's capital. The school has often been accused of putting the baseball before education, but has somehow avoided being shut down. The first starting pitcher, Osvald Olsen, is also the manager and coach of the team. Given the young ages of the players on the team, every member of the pitching staff except Olsen has a hard limit of 60 pitches per game.

THE GRAND DUCHY OF SCHILTZBERG
Image
"Deum Super Omnia"

History:
The Grand Duchy of Schiltzberg is an enormous nation that stretches to engulf much of the European continent, and has grown from humble beginnings into being the economic, social, and cultural powerhouse that it is today. In the year 1718, the grand patriot and war hero, whose name was Nicolas Schiltz, was granted a large portion of land for his gallantry in action and his extreme patriotism and courage in the First Javanese War of Succession (1704-1707) by the Luxembourgish Grand Duke. This land became a province of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and was called Schiltzberg. Schiltzberg began to grow in industry and culture, and with the growing ideas of the Enlightenment, Schiltzbergers believed that they deserved to be a sovereign state, which would be independent from Luxembourg. Inspired by the American Revolution, Duke Jean I of Schiltzberg declared Schiltzberg's independence from Luxembourg on March 31, 1781. Luxembourg was in no state of readiness for war, and was forced to recognize Schiltzberg's independence, and Luxembourg's Grand Duke Joseph I signed the treaty to recognize the new Grand Duchy on February 12, 1782. The nation grew industrially very quickly, having an industrial revolution, and it quadrupled in size, gaining territories from its militarily inferior rival of the Holy Roman Empire, which Schiltzberg seemed to be continuously and indefinitely at war with.

In the nineteenth century, Emperor Napoleon of France, which had been an ally of Schiltzberg's before the French Revolution, threatened to declare war on Schiltzberg if it did not submit itself to his rule. Schiltzberg refused, and this led to a French invasion of Schiltzbergian territory. Schiltzberg lashed out against Napoleon's army with an army that was much stronger than the Emperor had anticipated, and Schiltzberg defeated Napoleon, winning crucial battles at Paris and Versailles. Schiltzberg occupied France for seven months and intended on claiming the entire territory of that nation for its own, but hostile Germany its allies were afraid of Schiltzberg becoming too powerful, and threatened to declare war if Schiltzberg claimed land south of the 47th parallel. Schiltzberg claimed all of France north of that latitude line, though it also ceded a large portion of the land to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which had been an ally in the war, and the remaining territory became an independent government known as the Republic of France, which became a close ally of Schiltzberg in many crucial wars.

Late in that century, the German kingdoms began to centralize, making Germany a critical threat to Schiltzberg and all of Europe. In 1914, following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, who was a leader in Germany's ally of Austria-Hungary, the German military broke a twenty year standoff with Schiltzberg and its allies by invading Belgium. The German military was so strong that it overtook the Belgian capital of Brussels after only 72 hours, slaughtering the royal family of Belgium and leaving Belgium and its allies, including Schiltzberg, stunned. Schiltzberg, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Republic of France all declared war on Germany within several days of this happening. The Allies acted fast to prevent the Germans from attacking further nations, and Luxembourg and Great Britain attacked German troops in Belgium, while Schiltzberg and France invaded German territory. The Germans fought back hard, and they were able to push through Belgium into Schiltzbergian territory, forcing Schiltzberg to retreat and defend its own border with Belgium. The Allies signed an agreement with the Russian Empire and the United States of America, and the reinforcements from these nations allowed the Allies to begin to push back the Central Powers, which were led by Germany. The Russians invaded Germany from the east, and the rest of the Allies closed in on Germany from the west, and finally were able to break back into German territory in March of 1916. The German capital was overtaken, and the government was overthrown, as Schiltzberg and its allies won the war in May of 1916. Schiltzberg claimed much of the western German territory, expanding its own empire significantly. Belgium was administered by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in an effort to restore its government, but the natives started a movement to be absorbed into Luxembourg, and a referendum was passed to absorb Belgium into Luxembourg in November of 1919. France, Great Britain were given the imperialist territories of Germany, and Russia was given the part of Germany that has been called Prussia. The Allies created a new, democratic government in Germany, much at the pushing of the United States and France, but much to the dismay of Schiltzberg, which wanted to create a new monarchy, preferably from their own royal family to create an alliance with the Germans. Peace was temporarily gained.

The Germans began to stir again, as they recovered from the horrible war. There was a strong economic depression, and this angered the Germans, who blamed the depression on Schiltzberg. In September of 1939, Germany invaded Schiltzberg and once again started a world war. Italy and Japan joined Germany in its conquest of world domination, as Italy aided Germany in its European and African conquests, and Japan led its own Pacific and Asian conquests. The Allies reassembled, as the Schiltzbergers and every other European nation except for Germany and Italy declared war on the Axis Powers, and the United States declared war on Japan after being attacked in December of 1941. The Germans showed early dominance in the war, gaining a lot of territory very quickly, and Schiltzberg was forced to temporarily move its government to Versailles, which was much farther west from the front line than New Schiltzbierg was. It was a good thing too, because New Schiltzbierg was overtaken, and the Germans claimed "East Schiltzberg" for their own. Schiltzberg was not defeated yet though, as they fought back with their allies and regained the land. Meanwhile, the Americans were fighting bitterly against the Japanese in the Pacific, recapturing island nations that had previously been taken by the Japanese. The Americans got involved in the African conquest after receiving a message from the Republic of Mexico that the Germans had offered Mexico an alliance if it would invade the United States. The Germans were winning the war in Europe, but then made the mistake of provoking Soviet Union, which had previously been known as Russia, and this almost immediately resulted in their beginning to lose ground. They had opened up another front of the war and were unable to maintain their efforts. Captured land was retaken by the allies, who closed in on rivaling Germany, and the Germans surrendered in January of 1944. The Allies were furious that they had allowed the Germans to continue to have a government after the first World War, and this time, they allowed Schiltzberg to annex what remained of German territory, as well as Switzerland and Austria, which had supported the German effort, wiping Germany off the map. The Soviet Union was allowed to annex the German satellite state of Poland, and France was allowed to annex North Italy, while the United Kingdom was given South Italy as an imperial territory. Great Britain later sold this territory to France for money in an alliance treaty. The United States was allowed to keep all of the island nations as its territories, and was also given a great amount of land in Africa that had previously belonged to Germany, but this land was lost to the independence movement over the next decade. The people of Luxembourg voted to be annexed by Schiltzberg in 1948 in a referendum, so this gave Schiltzberg control of most of central Europe.

In the 1950s, Schiltzberg adopted moderate socialism, and was seen as the moderate of European politics, with the Soviet Union as the extreme communist and Great Britain and France as extreme capitalists. It was good to have neutral Schiltzberg separating these powers, and this is what prevented another World War from happening.

In the dawn of the third millennium, many began to question the legitimacy of a monarchy, including Schiltzberg's own leader, Grand Duke Lucas I. On March 31, 2014, Lucas stepped down as Grand Duke and approved a democratic constitution into law that would allow for the election of the head of state, who was the President. This was Schiltzberg's form of government for forty years of relative peace and mediocrity, until a man named James Williams was elected President in 2046. Williams was an extremist who fought to create nationalism in the country and strengthen government in Schiltzberg, in the case of war. He invaded France, which had been Schiltzberg's ally, and won the war because of Schiltzberg's outrageous military spending. In the treaty that ended the war, Schiltzberg annexed all of the Italian Peninsula, greatly increasing its land area. Schiltzberg asserted its dominance, and became an imperial power when its navy invaded several islands off of the coast of Asia. Nationalism was at its peak in Schiltzberg, and Williams was elected to a second term in 1950. He continued his controversial policies in his second term, but received a blind eye from foreign powers, because they feared his military strength. In 1954, Williams was to be removed from office, due to a clause in the constitution that limited a President to two terms. Williams asked for an amendment to be passed that would allow him to serve a third term, but the legislature unanimously voted down this amendment. Williams was outraged, and declared that he would refuse to step down as President. The following day, the congress voted to impeach him, and the Justice Council called for an impeachment trial. WIlliams then had the military assassinate all members of congress and the Justice Council, and declared himself the Emperor of Schiltzberg. Emperor James, as he called himself, declared war on France once again, and invaded. France and all of its allies, including Great Britain and the United States declared war on the rebel government and wished to restore peace in Schiltzberg. The Soviet Union also declared war on Schiltzberg out of fear of invasion. After six months, the government was overthrown, and the Schiltz Dynasty was restored, with Lucas III, grandson of Lucas I, as the new Grand Duke. Now there have been two decades of peace since the ancient government was restored, and most Schiltzbergers live happily in peace.

HOME AWAY

The Grand Duchy of Schiltzberg offers the tournament use of Royal Dome, home of the New Schiltzbierg Grand Dukes of the NBLS, which is owned and paid for by the taxpaying citizens of New Schiltzbierg. The elegant stadium is the only stadium in the NBLS to have a fixed roof, but the elegant stadium is dubbed as "unique" rather than "outdated" for this feature. The stadium was built as Schiltzberg Stadium in 1978, and was host to several teams until it was bought by the NBLS when it was founded in 2000. The name was changed to Royal Dome in 2000. The New Schiltzbierg Grand Dukes have played at Royal Dome since 2000, and the New Schiltzbierg Prime Ministers (now the Presidents) also played there from 2000 to 2012.

The Bulletin: Mae'ao out as manager! While he is the single greatest player in Vaian history, his recent failures at the WBC led to his ouster. Replacing him is a former teammate, and another Vaian great, Arnao. Arnao's hiring has been widely applauded in Maklohi Vai. He is seen as a stable, calm figure who can provide some much needed leadership to the young team. The other big change is with the starting pitching, as the veterans Aonmai Rutulotoa and Uwo have both retired. A pair of young lefties, Rukamo Wilapoturakai and Peter Harrison, will be cycled in to start. No changes in the starting lineup, but this will probably be Koilani Ruputuo's last or second-to-last year with the national team.

History

Combined record
ALL TIME RECORD: 80-63

as Southern Democratic States
ALL TIME RECORD: 56-49
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 32: 6-4
INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL SLAM VIII: 4-5
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 33: 5-5
INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL SLAM IX: 12-7, IBS IX champion
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 37: 13-17
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 38: 16-11

as U.S.A.R.
ALL TIME RECORD: 24-14
WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 39: 24-14, Loss in quarterfinals

After 3 average tournaments, the Southern Bears blossomed in the IBS IX about 4 cycles ago. The Southern Democratic States finished with a 5-3 record for 15 points in group A, tied with Frenline Delpha. Both teams had to play a tie breaker game for seeding. SDS lost the game 6-5 and had the 7th seed. They played against the #2 seed, the Bat Slaves. SDS won the series 2-1 against Gregoryisgodistan. SDS played the semi finals against Abanhfleft Revolution. The Bears lost the first game 9-2 but finally won the series 2-1. The Southern Democratic States was in the final against the United States of Devonta Thundersticks. Devonta won the first game 4-1 and the Bears won the next one 9-4. Devonta won the 3rd game 5-4 and SDS won the next one 3-2. In the 5th and final game of the IBS IX final, the Bears won 4-1!

Then the Southern Bears was missing in action until the team comes back for the XI olympiad as part of the North Eurasian Unified Sporting Team but short of their female players, the Bears didn't qualified with an atrocious 0-4 record. Then, the Southerners finished 4th in group A with a 13-17 record in the World Baseball Classic 37. In the World Baseball Classic 28, the Southern Democratic States had a crazy finish in Bulter Group where 3 teams were tied with 45 points but only two teams advanced to the playoffs. South Yerfilag were the unlucky ones. The Bears faced an unranked team in the round of 16, but this unranked team was Newmanistan who were coming back after being absent for many seasons. Newmanistan beat the SDS in 3 games.

In 2018, every North Eurasian nations (but Pays den haut) united together to form a socialist superstate. The new federation has been named the Union of Socialist Alpine Republics, this federation, composed with 30 socialist republics, inherits SDS's rank. To read more about the "creation" of the U.S.A.R., read this story. In it's first participation in the WBC as the U.S.A.R., the team finished in 1st place in Darmen group with 20 wins and 10 losses. The Bisons played against the infamous Musterfield in the 1st round and our pitchers struck out a lot of batters. The Alpine Union won the series 3-1. In the quarter finals, the Reprezentacja Alpejski lost 3-1 against Ethane.

ABANHFLEFT REVOLUTION
Abanhfleft men's national baseball team

No one even cares about baseball in Abanhfleft anymore. (No, not really. It's just everyone's gotten used to the Revolution underperforming so everyone's just set their bars very, very low.)

Name of nation: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Team name: Abanhfleft Revolution
Nickname: Revolutionaries (common), Revolters (derogatory)
Official history: This will be Abanhfleft's eighth time participating in the World Baseball Classic. It's also probably the eighth time that they'll disappoint.
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +3. Abanhfleft is experimenting with new styles to try and finally get a win in the WBC.

Backup catcher Grammar Enforcement Officer OOA0010 announced his retirement from play in order to become the bench coach and Cheese Police 4827HDKSXZ took his place as backup/defensive replacement. Additionally, center fielder Executioner 9D8AH announced his retirement to become the fielding coach, a newly created position. Prune Farmer IKEALUKA9 will replace him on the roster, but will sit on the bench for now with Navy SuperAdmiral Kurt DeathToSanJoseGuayabal being inserted into the lineup.

Stadium:

Due to the destruction of Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium by Wolfopian terrorists (OOC: actually a Gregoryisgodistani false flag), all home games will be played at Pervert Chaser NAUSJW Ballpark, formerly known as Covello Field, located in District 27, about half a mile from Covello Bay. It was renamed prior to the IBS to honor former pitching coach and pitcher Pervert Chaser NAUSJW who was arrested in New Wolfopolis during the World Baseball Classic for performing his job, castrating and dickapitating Mount Tamobet players competing in the nude. He is currently in Wolfopian prison. The arrest of Pervert Chaser NAUSJW led to Gregoryisgodistan adding New Wolfopolis to the Enemy List, which according to the Gregoryisgodistani government was the impetus for the terrorist attack.

Pervert Chaser NAUSJW Ballpark seats 4,000 fans. Beyond the fence is a small patch of woods. Beyond that are some luxury houses, and beyond that is Covello Bay and the District 27 Marina, where the wealthy dock their personal yachts. The marina also has space for foreign ships to dock. It can hold fairly large ships. Ships with capacities up to 50 people should be able to dock there, possibly more if they are small enough. The marina area is off limits to Gregoryisgodistani commoners, who will be executed if they trespass, but foreigners do not need to worry about that provided they have their papers. Teams can either fly into Lord Almighty Gregory National Airport in the Capital District and travel approximately 600 miles by bus or travel by boat, dock at the marina, and rent a bus to drive about a mile to the stadium. (Walking from the marina is also possible.) Teams traveling by boat should inform the Gregoryisgodistani government as soon as possible so that customs can meet them there and space can be made for their boat. Please include the number of people traveling with you.

RP:

Choose my Lineup No - follow what was posted.
Choose my Runscorers Yes
RP Injuries Yes, one per game.
Godmod Injuries Yes, but note the above restriction.
Follow my Rotation: Yes
Eject my players: Yes, one per game unless you eject a commensurate number of yours. For instance, you can eject three of my players if you eject two of yours. This includes coaches, who can be ejected but count towards the limit. An exception is that you can eject both my manager and my pitcher for throwing at a batter after a warning (as the rules say should happen) and this counts as one ejection.
Godmod other events: Yes, do anything except kill Lord Almighty Gregory, our head of state and official deity. Failed assassinations and fake assassinations using prop heads are fine. However, expect reciprocation. If you kill one of my players, that's fine, but I'm going to kill one of yours. If you don't TG me first to ask which one I'd be ok with killing, I won't TG you first, I'll just kill one, though if you kill a bench player I would kill one of your bench players, not a starter. I will do this WITHOUT CHECKING YOUR RP PERMISSIONS because it is far too complicated to figure out whether we'd both be in violation of each other's RP permissions or whether you made an exception, meaning we're both fine.
Other: If you do an RP involving my country, but do not mention it by name ("Gregoryisgodistan" without any formatting in the middle of the word such as striking "isgod" to make Gregoryisgodistan) TG me to give me a heads up. You do not need to wait for permission, and there is a chance I won't bother to reply. I frequently search for mentions of my nation so I can reply to RP's, but if you don't mention it by name, I can't do that. If for whatever IC reason you refer to my country by some other name (Gregoryisgodistan, Gregoryistan, Gregoryisnotgodistan, "that country with a name so blasphemous I cannot speak it" etc.) that is fine but either mention my country by name in an OOC note or TG me.
Use DH at home: Yes. But we're using official MLB rules, not international rules, so if you have a starting pitcher who is a good hitter, you may bat him instead of a DH, but then you lose your right to a DH for the remainder of the game even if you go to the bullpen. It also means if you move your DH to the field, you have you bat the pitcher for the remainder of the game. Normally, he would bat in the spot of the player who was replaced, but you could always do a double switch. He has to bat somewhere though.

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

“One Goal, Only Goal, Win Number Five!”

With two World Baseball Classics in the books, and a ranking now residing in the top 10, there is now only one way this Classic will be considered successful: Win it all!

The bar is no longer low. It is at the highest notch possible.

Let’s start with the technicalities:
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, my lineup is listed here. Use that!
Follow my pitching rotation: Yes. I will normally include upcoming pitchers in my prior RP.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only say they are hurt. I will determine the severity.
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes, on a basis of no more then one more then you eject from your own team.
Godmod other events: No
Use DH at home: Another “Hell no!” here

Additional Information that is very important to me: Newmanistan does not prescribe to the modern day concept of pitch counts determining how long a starting pitcher is kept in for. In fact, pitch counts are not even kept track of outside of curiosity sake. Such count is not displayed on the scoreboard, so if you want to track it for your pitcher, you must do it manually.

– If Newmanistan has given up 2 runs or less and WON, then the starting pitcher has gone all nine innings. No ifs, ands, or buts. This is true even if it would have been a save situation.

– Another Newmanistan trait is aggressive base stealing. Think back to the days of Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson in their primes.

Team Nickname: Rockets
Cultural: Natives of Newmanistan are referred to as Newmanistanians.
Uniforms: Pretty much, think Kansas City Royals with sky blue. Home are sky blue.

Head Coach: Ashley Stevens 57, Loudon Leopards
– Daughter of former Newmanistanian superstar pitcher Jessica Brasfield. Ashley went on to have a fantastic career in her own right, and will do her best to make sure that the Rockets live up to their legendary pitching performances of the past. The Leopards are the dominant pitching team at home. She is honored to be only the second coach ever in Newmanistan baseball history and knows she has big shoes to fill.

Hitting Coach: Chelsea Benjamin, 54, Pocono City Capitals
– Hit for decent power in her playing career, but she had an uncanny knack for being able to make contact. She is studious in observing a player’s mechanics, and can usually pick up on problems quickly to make sure hitting slumps are temporary.

Pitching Coach: Tracianne Conti, 53, Loudon Leopards
– Works with Murphy in Loudon to make sure that everything is perfect with the pitching. Conti is astute on being able to decipher when a pitcher is getting tired, and does not only use a pitch count number to do that. Intelligent on bullpen usage as well.

Starting Rotation:
(The official rotation order will be announced after the group draw to match up our best pitchers against the logical opponent.)

1A) Courtney Duvall, 29, LHP, Loudon Leopards (#22)
– Duvall is a dominant pitcher at home that puts up some amazing numbers. In just four seasons, she has already won the Keisler (Cy Young) Award four times. She is tall, and while she can and will beat you with a fastball, it is her curveball and slider that make her so dominant. A splitter is also part of repertoire. Tossed a perfect game against Musterfield during WBC 39 qualifying. Margaret loves her, as evidenced by us (almost) always getting a favorable scoreline that is conducive for a good start. (May not always be a win, but its starting pitcher friendly a lot).
PITCHES ALL GAMES AGAINST UNION OF SOCIALIST ALPINE REPUBLICS!

1B) Jennifer Hughes, 25, RHP, Jessicaville Millionaires (#42)
– In the last two years, Hughes has developed into a top starting pitcher in the Empire, and was second to Duvall in Keisler Award voting lat year. Hughes has been a part of the World Baseball Classic roster the last two classics, but as a long reliever. With her career absolutely taking off right now, she’s being given much more responsibility.
PITCHES ALL GAMES AGAINST SANDBERG

1C) Breanne Burks, 30, RHP, Tundra Falls Saints (#43)
– Burks has a little bit better fastball then does Duvall. She will come at you aggressively with it quite often. However, just when hitters think that they might get that figured it out, she changes speeds like a true master with a changeup that makes many batters look silly. Her curveball is also something that must be respected. Dropped from 1B, where she was the last two last Classics, to 1C, but that’s more of a testament to Hughes.
PITCHES ALL GAMES AGAINST ZWANGZUG

1D) Jessica Gray, 23, LHP, Putnam Lake Eagles (#28)
– Jessica makes her first appearance on the World Baseball Classic roster. This is a tremendous vote of confidence from coach Stevens to do this, but she has been very impressed with Gray’s composure and compete level. The southpaw loves to throw her curveball and slider, which is similar to how Courtney Duvall wants to get you out, as well. Jessica does not have quite as a good a fastball as Duvall, but relies on the wicked 12-6 break of her breaking pitches.
PITCHES ALL GAMES AGAINST GIM

1E) Kaitlyn Carroll, 27, RHP, Southport Tigers (#36)
– The youngster surprised many in her rookie season by being able to make an immediate impact, and her career has simply taken off. Being the ace in Southport is the real deal, as this is where the Keisler’s played. Carroll gets it done with a sinker, slider, and splitter. Her fastball is average, but her dominance with the breaking pitches makes it better then it really would be otherwise. Dropped from 1C to 1E, as while she is still great, she’s stagnated some lately.
PITCHES ALL GAMES AGAINST KARAMIKO

Bullpen:

Closer) Shannon Spencer, 34, RHP, South Charlotte Condors (#44)
– Like most closers, Spencer will bring the heat. However, a wicked cutter and a splitter mixed in means hitters can’t always think fastball.

Set-up) Meghan Girardi, 30, LHP, Loudon Leopards (#43)
– The closer in Loudon, Girardi is similar to Spencer and will be used in a set-up role for the most part, but could close a game or two or three herself. Could also be used in any standard short relief situation.

Lauren Visconti, 32, LHP, Centralia Cougars (#32)
– Starting pitcher in the last two classics will now come out of the bullpen. Her top pitches are her curveball and her cutter, and she’ll even throw a screwball once in a while. Speaking of screwballs, some say that can also define her, as sometimes she’ll throw at a batter a little more then desired.

Tara McIntyre, 26, RHP, Loudon Leopards (#26)
– Another starting pitcher in the last two classic that comes out of the bullpen. A teammate of Courtney Duvall’s with the Leopards, McIntyre has a high degree of confidence in her ability and will always come right after a batter. She does not mess around with picking corners and challenges them to beat her at her best. Most will fail in doing so. The curveball is her out pitch, but also has a strong fastball and slider.

Hannah Lee, 19, LHP, South Charlotte Condors (#25)
– An up and coming starting pitcher in Newmanistan, who was recently selected #1 overall by South Charlotte. She was so dominant, especially with her fastball and splitter, that most feel great success for her is inevitable. Her main purpose on the team is to get experience, so she is only going to be used in situations where the Rockets have a big lead and want to save a pitcher. In the unlikely event the Rockets have a big deficit, it would be possible then as well.

Kelsey Winkler, 27, LHP, Springfield Thoroughbreds (#40)
– A reliable reliever for mid-inning situations. Normally will be used for 2-3 innings at a time. Could go as much as five.

Alyssa Mackey, 29, RHP, Tundra Falls Saints (#48)
– A versatile pitcher that could go as many as five innings, but is generally only going to be looked on in short relief.

Now, let’s meet the offense, shall we?

STARTING LINEUP (Throws/Bats)
1) Hannah Bates- CF (R/S), 28, Putnam Lake Eagles (#8)
– Get your catcher ready, but even then it might not be enough. Bates is a pure contract hitter, and because of her amazing speed, she can turn singles into doubles, and leg out many infield singles. She has a good eye, and that walk you may surrender may soon end up a three base walk. Epitomizes the Newmanistanian legend of aggressive base stealing, and has no worries about stealing third as well. Doesn’t hit homers over the fence, usually, but can get the inside the park variety every now and then.

2) Lexi Alcorn- LF (R/S), 29, Springfield Thoroughbreds (#15)
– So what’s even more of a pain in the neck then having to deal with someone like Bates in the leadoff spot? Having a clone of hers batting second, like Alcorn.

3) Brittany Morgan- 3B (R/S), 33, Olympia Gladiators (#30)
– Morgan is very capable of popping 40 or so HR’s over the fence in a 162-game season at home, but she also maintains a career batting average of .338. Expect her to be driving home those top two often.

4) Mallory Harris- 1B (L/S), 28, Southport Tigers (#27)
– The most dominant offensive player in Newmanistan today. Mallory can get it done in all aspects, hitting for power and average while also providing gold glove caliber defense. Oh, and she’s not afraid to steal a base or two, either. She also knows she’s good, and enjoys showboating. The type of player you love if they are on your team, and hate otherwise.

5) Kayla Carey- SS (R/R), 27, North Charlotte Wildcats (#5)
– Provides amazing defense in the middle of the infield, but also has a career batting average of .352, ranking tops in Newmanistan among active players. Sneaky power, and average 20-25 HR’s in a 162 game season. Speedy on the bases.

6) Stephanie Reynolds- RF (R/S), 21, Pocono City Capitals (#14)

– Making her debut on the team, Reynolds has impressed everyone at home with her power. As a rookie with Pocono City, she pounded out 49 long balls, while maintaining a BA of .318. She also has a great eye, and drew over 100 walks last season. She replaces Kelsey Brandis, the former starter at this position.

7) Michelle Covington- 2B (R/S), 27, Jessicaville Millionaires (#4)
– Known for a high level of swagger and flair, she loves to talk up with the best of them. She can hit too, and is more of an extra base hit threat then a power threat.

8) Hannah Kent- C (R/S), 31, Dover City Mountaineers (#38)
–Hannah's batting average floats around .300, and enough power to respect (15-20 HR's per season). Great defensively.

9) Pitcher

DH When Necessary: Rachel Landry (3B)- A power threat, who misses out in the numbers game at the position to have a chance to start.
Note: When the DH is used, Landry HITS SIXTH. Insert her over Brandis, and then just move the others down one.

Bench:
Rachel Landry- 3B (when DH not used) (#18)
Brianne Yeomans- C (#39)
Christine Hansen- CI (#19)
Lori Brewster- CI (#23)
Sydney Hassler- MI (#21)
Kenzie Magee- MI (#11)
Kelsey Brandis- OF (#7)
Ashley McCabe- OF (#12)
Meghan Streeter- OF (#17)
Jessica Novotny- Utility (#9)

SUPER-LLAMALAND WBC40 ROSTER

Another Classic, another disappointment, and Colin Nittledeen found himself out of a job as soon as the last out of the Tigers’ season was made. Weeks after the Classic ended, the LBA found itself the recipient of millions of dollars of federal funding. Its task: to get the championship back to Super-Llamaland as soon as humanly possible.

And the LBA have delivered. It’s too soon to say whether or not their plan has worked, but they’ve poured a lot of effort into improving the Tigers in the present and in the future. Things are looking up for the Llamaneans - but Margaret has had her way with better teams in the past, and nothing is guaranteed at the WBC.

UNIFORMS "Home" "Away"

Fairly standard uniforms for the Tigers this time. The home uniform is a color-reversed version of the WBC39 homes, with white lettering and gold piping on royal blue. The aways/alternates remain basically the same uniform, with white lettering on a forest green uniforms.

NICKNAME: The Tigers
MANAGER: Laurent Mårtensson
ACHIEVEMENTS: Three WBC championships (28, 30, 31), five finals appearances (28-31, 37), one IBS championship, co-hosts of WBC30
RANK: Fourth (3.83)

PLAYSTYLE:

The Tigers put speed and defense first: their entire starting lineup is at least above-average with the glove, and most are positional standouts. They're a little bit less aggressive on average than one would expect on the basepaths considering most of the players’ speed, but if pitcher or catcher can't hold runners on very well, they won't hesitate to rack up the stolen bases. The team doesn't rely on one single batter to knock in runs; the team is a bit less powerful than others of its caliber, but most players get their fair share of extra-base hits by hitting a disproportionate number of doubles and triples. Pitchers generally excel at pitch command and sequencing, and most manage to get above-average spin and movement on their balls.

The team is noted for their intense study of both analytics and video (which, after recent government investment, has become even more intense), thus making them a bit different from most national teams. This is seen both in team selection and in preparation for games.

STADIA:
Diamond Park (35,000) in western Ruby Falls, home to ABC Ruby, will host matches against Empire of Cats
The Ultradome (39,600), located in the northern city of Emerald Springs, home to BC Northern Emerald, will host matches against Abanhfleft.
Stonehaven (30,000), in the medium-sized city of Dinschria, is home to local club Dinschria Storm and will host matches against Lisander.
Esperansa Field (37,500), in the southern city of Los-Juantos, is the only stadium of the four that did not host WBC30 matches. The park, a newly-constructed stadium on the oceanfront, will host matches against Hothnia.
Tyler Rocke Memorial (43,500) in downtown New Llama City, former host of the WBC30 finals and a number of Baseball Club Championships matches. Will host matches against Cosumar.

INFIELDERS
Sofia RASMUSSEN, #5, 31, C-1B, R/R
2030 season: .377/.445/.586, 22 HR, 89 RBI, 0 SB
Nicolas ROUSSEAU, #6, 28, 1B-LF-RF, L/L
2030 season: .254/.349/.520, 35 HR, 97 RBI, 0 SB
Hector RINALDI, #13, 26, MIF-CF, R/R
2030 season: .322/.354/.482, 14 HR, 70 RBI, 26 SB
Markus WRIGHT, #24, 26, UTIL, S/R
2030 season: .300/.374/.487, 20 HR, 78 RBI, 24 SB
Emery NOVAK, #18, 28, 3B-LF-RF, R/R
2030 season: .297/.355/.480, 27 HR, 99 RBI, 20 SB

Catcher Sofia Rasmussen remains a Llamanean star and arguably the world’s best catcher: one of the team’s leaders, she’s a brilliant pitch-framer and an expert contact hitter (holding the national record for seasonal batting average at a videogame-esque .417) who has found considerable power recently. Nicolas Rousseau, despite his deceiving height of five-nine, is known for both his slugging bat and defensive acumen, and has cemented his spot in the starting lineup of . Up the middle, the team will play the dynamic pairing of Hector Rinaldi, brother of national team footballer Stefan, and former college superstar Markus Wright: with Rinaldi’s trade to Wright’s New Llama Cyclones, the two have become the best double-play combo in the nation, and should continue to star for the national team. Finally, newcomer Emery Novak is known for his diving stops and strong arm at third base, and should hold his own offensively for the Tigers as well.

It’s hard to not like this infield. Sofia Rasmussen is an absolute standout at catcher and the team’s emotional leader - arguably the best in the world. Additionally, the other four players are stars at their respective positions, all offering the speed, defense, and doubles power this team is so known for in droves. This infield will be an excellent core for years to come.

Carsten RIVIERA, #41, 24, C-1B, S/R
2030 season: .229/.335/.487, 32 HR, 80 RBI, 0 SB
Emily BENGTSSON, #29, 22, MIF-CF, R/R
2030 season: .313/.360/.445, 16 HR, 71 RBI, 30 SB
James HAO, #11, 26, 3B-2B, S/R
2030 season: .299/.341/.425, 6 HR, 40 RBI, 45 SB
Felicia MEI, #33, 23, UTIL, S/R
2030 season: .300/.375/.452, 13 HR, 67 RBI, 28 SB

A fairly standard bench selection, albeit one with only two catchers. Carsten Riviera, a decent defensive catcher who also hit thirty home runs, has superseded the underperforming Neil Trabajen as Catcher of the Future™, while the extra bench spot earned by only taking two catchers has been given to Emily Bengtsson, a promising talent who feels like a younger Markus Wright and can deputize in three positions. With the rise of Emery Novak, James Hao must be wondering what he needs to do to get onto the team if consistent forty-steal seasons won’t cut it, but he’ll be a potent weapon with his contact skills and speed. Finally, Felicia Mei has already broken into Cyclones’ lineup at twenty-three with speed, defense, and very strong plate discipline. The switch-hitting utility player should be able to find playing time this Classic.

OUTFIELDERS

Isak GUNNLAUGSON, #25, 27, OF, R/R
2030 season [Arondic Pro League] .365/.430/.629, 41 HR, 117 RBI, 16 SB
Gudjon FRANDSEN, #28, 24, OF, R/R
2030 season: .307/.360/.444, 9 HR, 62 RBI, 57 SB
Lucien RUSSO, #32, 25, OF, S/R
2030 season: .288/.365/.499, 25 HR, 58 RBI, 20 SB

Arguably the best the Tigers have had in years, the outfield is definitely one of this team’s strengths. Gudjon Frandsen has firmly established himself as the starting center-fielder - he’ll never hit for that much power, but stealing fifty-seven bases and earning a fifth consecutive All-League Defensive First Team award last season will make up for it. And his plate discipline has only improved, with his .307 average last season tying a career high. Meanwhile, Lucien Russo is a physical specimen with unheard-of defensive range, power, and speed. He’s battling a knee injury that derailed the second half of his season, but he should be back to full strength - and he’s just one season removed from a 40-40 campaign. But Frandsen and Russo have been around for a while - the real surprise is Isak Gunnlaugson. Questionably Llamanean (he doesn’t even play in the LBL), Gunnlaugson nevertheless tore up the Arondic baseball league last season and should slot right into Tanya Ericsson’s old role as a power hitter in the heart of the lineup.

Tanya ERICSSON, #26, 35, L/CF, R/R
2030 season: .254/.320/.459, 30 HR, 85 RBI, 1 SB
Megan SJÖBERG, #16, 27, OF, S/R
2030 season: .299/.395/.445, 17 HR, 66 RBI, 30 SB

The decline is finally happening, and this is probably Tanya Ericsson’s last Classic with the Tigers. One of the stars of the WBC35 team, she’ll undoubtedly be missed in the future. In the present, though, her injuries will confine her to DH or pinch-hitting.

Sjöberg is a relatively new name to the Llamanean Baseball League, having spent the first three years of her career up north with the Öslerholm Storm. Her introduction to the LBL was a success though, as she showed the patience, speed, and defensive acumen that made her so coveted as an international free agent. Her versatility and competency will be appreciated.

PITCHERS
note: the Tigers will experiment with starting rotations, likely playing all five for the first fifteen matches, but switch to a four-person rotation (likely demoting the fifth starter to long relief) after the halfway point of the group stage.

Justin ZHENG, #13, 33, R
2030 season: 20-6, 2.15 ERA, 240 IP, 252 K/50 BB

“The Machine” has done it again, winning his third consecutive Magnusson Award for best pitcher with another phenomenal season. Zheng throws a mid-nineties fastball with movement and complements it with a number of decent breaking pitches - curveball, changeup - as well as his legendary slicing 93-mph shuuto, dubbed longdexuanzhuan by fans of his hometown Nandaozhou Sharks. Combined with his ability to outthink hitters, he’s easily the best pitcher the nation has seen in a long time and the undisputed staff ace until his retirement.

Matthias GILSON-ENGEN, #38, 26, R
2030 season: 17-5, 2.21 ERA, 175 IP, 210 K/56 BB

Former national team closer Drew Gilson’s nephew has finally come into his own as a starter. GIlson-Engen has put his injury concerns behind for Kyrinson and grown into his full potential. Can’t quite throw as hard as his uncle, topping out in the mid-90s with his fastball, but couples his speed with an utterly dominant curve and solid changeup. By far the most likely candidate to succeed Zheng as the staff ace.

Madeline WAGNER, #36, 29, R
2030 season: 16-6, 2.94 ERA, 175 IP, 163 K/30 BB

Wagner took an unconventional path to the Llamanean Baseball League, playing in three different countries in two years after leaving college before being drafted first overall by the Surge last season. It seems to have worked: her first season established her as one of the best in the league, and she’s only gone up since. Wagner’s repertoire is fairly straightforward: a mid-90s four-seam fastball, a decent curveball with high spin rates and velocity, a shuuto picked up playing abroad, and a changeup with lots of vertical movement. However, her ability to mix pitches and keep hitters off-balance, pitching to weak contact, is the main reason behind her success.

Natalie WU, #49, 23, L
2030 season: 15-9, 3.10 ERA, 180 IP, 199 K/45 BB

She may play for one of the league’s worst teams, but Natalie Wu is undoubtedly one of Super-Llamaland’s most talented pitchers. Made the number-one draft pick by Northern Emerald last season, Wu made an immediate impact on her team, becoming Emerald’s undisputed ace. There may be some doubts as to how she holds up under pressure, but Wu’s arsenal is one of the team’s best. The lefty can command five different pitches - a low-90s fastball with a lot of movement, a slider, cutter, changeup, and an excellent 12-to-6 curve. Definitely one to watch.

Axel FLORENTSSEN, #17, 25, R
2030 season: 16-11, 3.04 ERA, 200 IP, 229 K/75 BB

A talented - if unpolished - six-five flamethrower, Florentssen has a lot of untapped potential. The Arondesheim native didn’t start playing baseball until he was sixteen, and it shows in his play - despite being able to hit 98 with his fastball and throw a dominant curve, Florentssen still struggles with command. Possibly the least Llamanean pitcher ever to start for the Tigers.

A note: these are their recommended roles, but most of these are elite Llamanean relievers and can fill other roles pretty well. In the Llamanean baseball leagues, roles tend to be flexible. The closer usually isn't the best pitcher - that'd be the fireman. Think Dellin Betances or 2014 Wade Davis - not just limited to the ninth inning, but to the most high-leverage situations. Cameron has continued to modernize his bullpen management, and this could begin to be true for the closer as well. Specialty pitches are marked with an asterisk. The Middle Long reliever will usually be relied on in 5+ out situations (e.g. a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning or something).

Long: Aurelio GOMES, #66, 24, R - fastball, cutter*, changeup
LOOGY: Michael KNUTSEN, #56, 27, L - cutter*, curveball, changeup
Middle Long: Marcus HONG, #58, 29, R - fastball, slider*
Middle: Morgan VELASCO, #60, 30, R - fastball, curveball*, changeup
Middle: James BRENNEMAN, #39, 25, R - fastball, sinker*, slurve
Middle: Brittany ZHEN, #45, 26, R - fastball, slider, changeup*
Middle: Kevin MATHEUS, #47, 32, L - fastball, splitter**, curveball
Closer: Victor NYMAN, #46, 30, R - fastball, splitter*, changeup
Fireman: Jason VAN DIJK, #51, 27, L - fastball**, cutter*, sinker, changeup

Pitching Coach: Evan MASORKA, 55 (Manager, New Llama Wizards)
Hitting Coach: Jake EARNEST, 50 (Hitting coach, Rogers BC)

Strategy Consultant: Wilson VALDEZ, 51 (Director of In-Game Strategy, Öslerholm Storm)

Laurent Mårtensson, the manager behind two of Llamanean baseball’s greatest dynasties, the mid-10s Apple Valley “Invincibles” and the early-twenties New Llama Wizards three-peat, is nothing short of an utter coup by the LFA. Lured out of an early retirement, the half-Arondic mastermind will be expected to build another dynasty with the Tigers. And if anybody can do it, it’s Mårtensson. He’ll be working mostly with ex-manager Colin Nittledeen’s coaching staff, with two important changes - Maddie Polanco, former Tigers star, is the new bench coach, and Emile Castor, Mårtensson’s fellow coach on the championship-winning WBC30 side, have been introduced. On paper, this coaching staff has a lot of starpower on it. It remains to see how they’ll do on the field.

Groups drawn

A new season is about to dawn for our baseball club. Hopefully, this year will be better than last year, where we got tossed out of the post season at the last possible moment.

Group 1:
Bongo Johnson (UR)
-Anthor- (18)
West Phoencia (8)
Somersville (UR)
Equestrian States (UR)
Scootalove City (21)

We are excited to finally see another pony nation to play ball with, however, we will not let that stop us from trying our best to win and move on to the postseason, where we truly belonged last season.

The teams we will need to watch out for are the two other season veterans, West Phoencia and -Anthor-. But I, Chuck Daniel, think this time, we will be victorious. It is time to take back control.

Time for us to rise.

But we should not discount the fresh blood of Somersville, Bongo Johnson and, Equestrian States.

We were fresh blood once too, and they can still win if they try hard.

But, I think we can do this. We will win this time.

SECOND THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM?: HICAÑA WBC40 ROSTER

Every nation takes their own path to the WBC. But perhaps none of these paths have been harder than that of the Society of Hicañans Abroad. Since the Hicañan Civil War broke out, the nation has struggled to return to stability and resolve the underlying tensions that led to the number of conflicts Hicaña has recently been pushed through. With foreign assistance, the Fourth Republic managed to purge itself of President Sandoval's autocratic, far-right regime. Unfortunately, efforts to set up a new government led by Solomon Ervine failed, and Hicaña finally collapsed into non-existence. Now, a number of expatriates are beginning to re-introduce the idea of Hicaña with the Society of Hicañans Abroad, which is beginning to resettle the nation. And the nation's fledgling sports teams could play a vital role in engaging Hicaña.

Just looking at results, WBC39 did an excellent job of doing so, as the Phoenixes somehow scrapped their way into the Round of 16 before falling to Schiltzberg. But the Phoenixes are more dysfunctional than you'd expect, as the baseball team has become the site of a brutal power struggle between superstar manager Alex Cameron and certain factions of the Hicañan Baseball Association. This team has the talent to go far. But they probably won't - unless everything can go right.

Manager: Alex Cameron (formerly of South Falls Athletic and the Llamanean National Team)
Assistant Manager: Hansel Ordoñez (new to managing, a former New Llama Cyclones and Bartolomé Bombers star)

THE ROCKET REPORT

FIVE ALIVE

by Brianne Henry,

The Drive for Five continues with the Rockets perfectly placed into Group 5, while the other four-time champion is stuck on four, as in Group 4. Newmanistan has a rank of 5 plus 5, and will hope that equates to a perfect 10 in the 40th World Baseball Classic. It is always an exciting time of year when one of these Classic get started, as there is always so much anticipation. There are your top teams in each group that everyone expects to do well, but when it is all said and done, history tells us that there will be at least one that fails to make it to the playoffs. Then, there are the unranked teams. They make their first appearance, and we have all been there. Which of these teams will end up soaring up the rankings, because we all need to start somewhere.

The 40th World Baseball Classic will be contested in Cassadaigua. Yes, there was a time where that meant we just had to jump over the border when our nations were each located in One Big Island, but as time has gone by, they ended up settling in Rushmore while we are in Esportiva, so it is now a longer trip for all of us. We are happy to see that they are back into it, as they were persuaded to return for the Colossal Champions Cup in Frenline Delpha, and now they do not want to stay away, and to actually go big with their hosting. It will be the third World Baseball Classic that Cassadaigua has hosted, and we participated in one of them, that being World Baseball Classic 18, where we came up well short of defending our title. We have had a nice rivalry with them in several sports, but no Newmanistanian team has ever won a title in the land of the pink. It’s about as bad as our home performance. Perhaps this year, things can be a lot different. After all, we are at the point now where there is no other end result that would be considered a success then a championship. That’s the way it always used to be, and we know that we are in striking range now.

So, the groups have been drawn, and the tenth-seeded Rockets have such a familiar opponent in the group, that it may be easy to forget that they are not the ones who are the top seed in the group. The top seed is the Union of Socialist Alpine States, who recently won World Bowl 32. On behalf of everyone here at the Rocket Report, I want to congratulate them for winning that title. It’s something that we have never been able to do, of course. They can swing the bats pretty good as well, having jumped up to the #6 overall seeding after a great run last year. We have some history with them, having defeated them when they were previously known as the United Democratic States, in the playoffs. As good as they are, the nation that got everyone’s attention right away when they looked at this group is Zwangzug. They re-emerged for the last Classic as well, and there is no one in Newmanistan who is going to see them as a 35th-ranked team in the world. We see them only as Zwangzug, the champions. Their rich history is something that we all must respect, and you can take that #35 and throw it out the window. It’s as if there is another “pot 1" team in this group.

The pot 3 team in the group, and the one that would theoretically be our biggest obstacle to qualifying (although that bigger obstacle will be Zwangug) is Sandberg. They have achieved their #24 ranking mostly due to showing up for three Classic in a row. While they will pull off some big wins here and there, it is not really an intimidating opponent. For as much tough luck as the Rockets got from the nation drawn from the 4th pot, they may have caught a bit of a break with that one. Ranked one spot better then Sandberg is the host themselves, Cassadaigua. Can you imagine if they were in this group, too? We’ll take Sandberg. Our unranked opposition will be the nations of Karamiko and Gim. We don’t know a whole bunch about them yet, so unless one of them surfaces with a roster and a committed media, those need to be twelve wins. Beating unranked teams was an aggravating achilles heel of this team last year.

When are we playing who, you ask?

MD 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26- Union Of Socialist Alpine Republics (Home MD 6, 16, 26). SP- Courtney Duvall
MD 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27- Karamiko (Home MD 7, 17, 27) SP- Kaitlyn Carroll
MD 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28- Sandberg (Home MD 3, 13, 23) SP- Jennifer Hughes
MD 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, 29- Gim (Home MD 9, 19, 29) SP- Jessica Gray
MD 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30- Zwangug (Home MD 5, 15, 25) SP- Breanne Burks

Coach Ashley Stevens has announced the planned pitching rotation will be as listed above to try and get the Rockets the best results, given the opponents. With a 5-player rotation with this set up, one pitcher can focus on one nation’s roster. Also, all games will be at a different stadium across the Empire, so it will be exciting to have baseball in fifteen different cities, with places like Penthoria and Brighton getting a chance to have the big time at their field for the first time ever. Stevens said that was her idea in a quote, “We go to those places during the season, and they have passionate fans. So instead of having fans in Pocono City get a bunch of games, which leads to them picking the more interesting matchups, this ensures us that we will have a raucous home crowd for every game. For example against Karamiko in Pocono City would not be a highlight. But against Karamiko in Penthoria absolutely will be!” Perhaps that is a good point, and for a nation that struggled to win the games that they were supposed to win in the last Classic, it should certainly fire up the home team.

There is no questioning the vibe going on throughout Newmanistan now. This is exciting. The team knows that number five is out there. And as we see with the group draw, the fives are just getting started.
