The Winds of Change
Will your empire stand the test of time?
Image

OP: The Federation of Democratic Regions

IC

"History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon."-Napoleon Bonaparte

The year is 1816. Across the whole of Ausozera, mighty empires rule over their realms while smaller nations struggle to stay afloat. Ships from the age of sail cruise the high seas, battling each other with the cannon and broadside while armies armed with muskets rule the land. Peace is a stranger to this land, as brutal conflicts and regime changes are a regular occurrence. The people are beginning to learn of democratic ideas, clamoring for reforms or taking up arms in revolution against the established monarchies of old. Domestic unrest does nothing to stop the conflict, with the Unified Isles undertaking preparations for the proud nations of Esgonia and Ratte while the splintered states that make up the present day Union of Autocratic Empires feud constantly.

To the west stands the once isolated Free Asian Ports, now a trade empire with a powerful fleet of warships. She stands surrounded by her larger neighbors, Esgonia and the warring Unionist states. Eragida is a shadow of its former self, lacking the power it used to claim while the splintered Unionist states are more concerned with the destruction of each other to care for international affairs. The nation of Ratte stands on proud Germanic military tradition and the blood of fallen patriots. Threatened by the Unified Isles, an island nation ruled by a skilled military leader, Ratte faces a conflict that could very well lead to its destruction. In the far north stand brutal empires on the frozen continent of Helsa, built on brutal military traditions. Disagreements threaten to set the continent ablaze with conflict, guaranteed to be devastating.

Welcome to The Winds of Change, a roleplay based in the Napoleonic era. The roleplay will largely focus on military matters and conflict over diplomacy but will include a little bit of everything.

Name of Country: The Unified Kingdom of the Isles
Head of State: HM Horatio I "The Usurper"
Population: ~35.000.000 Inhabitants
GDP: ~1 Trillion Isle'ish Ducats
Size and Quality of Army: [Specific Manpower will be provided at a later point for reasons]. The Royal Isle'ish Army is relatively young, but experienced from their recently ended Civil War. What they lack in is decent equipment, making especially there Artillery quite inferior to others.

The IRA fields 76 Line Infantry Regiments; 33 Fusilier Regiments and 33 Rifles Regiments (Although the equipment of the Rifle Regiments makes them more Fusiliers than anything), each between 1 and 6 Battalions of ~740 Men, although practical manpower shortages make them closer to 310-550 Soldiers. Infantry Brigades are always composed out of 6 Battalions, for a total of 1.850-3.300 Soldiers. (Like most Armies of its time, the IRA doesn't has standing units above the Regimental Level yet)

The Isle'ish Cavalry composes out of 125 Regiments, the vast majority (67) of which are Light Cavalry. 32 are Heavy Cavalry, and 26 are designated Dragoon Regiments (Although many Light or Heavy Cavalry Regiments are Dragoons in all but name). Each Regiment fields (theoretically) 5 Squadrons of ~250 Soldiers, for a total Regimental Size of 1.250 Soldiers. In practice, manpower shortages and logistical strains lead to most Cavalry Regiments fielding only ~550 Soldiers. A Cavalry Brigade has between 2 and 4 Regiments, making for a size between 1.100 and 2.200 Soldiers. The entire Cavalry Corps fields 68.750 Soldiers.

The Isle'ish Artillery is probably the most neglected out of all Arms. The Isle'ish only have one Artillery Regiment, which fulfils only Staff Purposes though and is practically divided into 112 Standing Batteries of usually 6 Guns. Currently, the Royal Army has 46 Horse Artillery Batteries; 18 Light Artillery Batteries; 44 Heavy Artillery Batteries; and 4 Siege Artillery Battery, for a total 670 Artillery Pieces. The Artillery Regiment itself has about 7.600 Personnel, with an additional 3.600 Personnel in the Royal Train Regiment and 670 Personnel in the Royal Engineer Regiment, but of which are administratively under the Artillery Regiment.

In addition to these "Line Corps", the IRA also has four Elite Corps: The Ranger Corps, which fulfils specialized Reconnaissance Roles and currently has six Regiments [Sharpshooters; 1st Rangers; 2nd Rangers; 3rd Rangers; 1st Pathfinders; 2nd Pathfinders], and one Independent Ranger Battalion. Rangers refer to dismounted Deep Reconnaissance Units, while Pathfinders are mounted. The Sharpshooter Regiment is a Headquarter Guard and Messenger Unit. The Grenadier Corps has 16 Grenadier Battalions that form a specialized "Siege Division" which is used during Sieges and other Assault Missions. Both the Grenadier Corps and the Ranger Corps have ~9.000 Soldiers in their Ranks.

The Sapper Regiment fields two Battalions that often operate closely with the Grenadier Corps, and the Royal Engineer Regiment. It contains about 1.100 Soldiers. Last, but not least, the Royal Marine Corps currently has three "Standing Marine Regiments", with the 1st Standing Marine Regiment having three Battalions, and the 2nd and 3rd having two, for a total manpower of ~3.900 Soldiers. These Regiments are often embarked upon larger Battlefleets, but more often march with the Army or provide Security at Harbours.

Size and Quality of Navy: The Isle'ish Royal Navy currently is equipped with:
Ships of the Line (34 Vessels)
- 5x 1st Rate [100 Guns]
- 11x 2nd Rate [90 Guns]
- 18x 3rd Rate [64 Guns]

Heavy Frigates (105 Vessels)
- 38x 4th Rate [50 Guns]
- 67x 5th Rate [32 Guns]

Light Frigates (155 Vessels)
- 80x 6th Rate [28 Guns]
- 75x "7th Rate" [20 Guns]

Unrated Vessels (109 Vessels)
- 64x Sloops [16 Guns]
- 45x Cutters [4 Guns]

Quality wise, the Frigates and Smaller Vessels of the IRN are definitely better than it's Ships-of-the-Line, especially due to the IRN preferring a "Raider-Doctrine" centring more on Trade Interdiction and Harassment than decisive battles. When using these asymmetric forms of combat, the IRN is quite experienced from the Isle'ish Civil War, while no Line Battle has ever been performed by it in its fifteen years of existence.

Head of State: Leifruher Vonehg Frenerh
Population: 55,440,000
GDP: Im not quite sure for this time period.
Size and Quality of Army: 5 Line Infantry Regiments of Donnish Mercenaries for hire, highly disciplined from their cold homeland and experienced in matter of warfare. They are not expected to be the first to retreat, but rather the last and if anything go forward as others go back. Compared to other soldiers of the time or mercenaries, are some of the finest line troops a Country can possibly hire hence they're cost of 1250 Doneres a month (2.10 NSD=1 Donere assuming money is the same in the 19th century.)

Name of Country: Federation of Free Asian Ports

Head of State: Matsuhide Ieyasu

Population: 26,602,111

GDP: ~3 Billion Yan ($1.2 Billion USD)

Size and Quality of Army: The FAP has, for about 100 years, maintained a strict policy of continental neutrality. Although it frequents in trade wars and expeditions, the still rather young nation prefers not to participate in local wars on the continent. The nation's economy simply can't sustain the huge armies required to participate in gargantuan campaigns across the land. As a result, the Federal Army is primarily a defensive force, holding the mountain region surrounding Canton proper. To make up for its small size, the Federal Army is very well trained, forming one of the earliest professional armies in the world. Rather than simply conscript its soldiers, the part of the population between the ages of 18 and 30 are encouraged to enlist in a professional military corps where they are put through basic training, discipline drills, and weapons proficiency programs. In addition, former soldiers whose enlistments have ended frequently join one of the highly respected Samurai Clans, large mercenary armies patriotically loyal to the country that are led by dynastic families of famed Samurai warriors. The Samurai themselves serve extensively in the FAP's military, gaining significant experience in combat and leadership. They, like the forces they lead, are feared as ferocious warriors.

The Federal Army possesses 40 Line Infantry Regiments; these are divided into 28 Fusilier regiments and 12 Mountain Infantry regiments. The Mountain Infantry are considered the creme of the Federal Army, being some of the most highly trained soldiers prepared for mountain warfare. Their accuracy in particular is highly valued. The infantry in the Fusilier regiments are armed with the standard Type 1775 musket, a 0.75 caliber muzzle-loading long gun. The infantry in the Mountain regiments are armed with the Ferguson rifle, a 0.65 caliber breech-loading rifle. While revolutionary and expensive, the Sapporo National Armory was commissioned in 1780 to manufacture large quantities of the weapon for the Mountain Infantry, who desired a rifle with significantly more accuracy than a musket while being easy to load as the mountainous terrain surrounding Canton does not easily permit the typical line battle doctrine. Typical manpower of a regiment is approximately 1,200 soldiers. These units are always single-gender (the FAP does allow women to serve as line infantry) and are led by a Colonel.
Image

The Federal Army also includes 10 Cavalry Regiments; these are all light cavalry. Because of the unique terrain of Canton, the effect of cavalry is significantly reduced. Thus, they are not considered as important in the Federal Army as the more famous Mountain Infantry. They are instead used as rapidly deployable forces capable of forming new battle lines in support of the main force. Their high mobility is valued less in the tactical sense and more of the strategic sense. They are armed with carbine variants of the Type 1775 musket along with muzzle-loading pistols. Some officers are allowed to use privately purchased Collier flintlock revolvers, a new type of pistol utilizing multiple firing chambers for an increased rate of fire. They are not considered reliable. Cavalry are also equipped with standard short swords, though officers and particularly affluent enlisted men were allowed to use Samurai swords, should they possess them. They consist of the same number of soldiers and officers as an infantry regiment.

The Federal Army's Artillery Corps consists of 10 regiments. The artillery is considered fairly average, and are armed with standard muzzle loading cannon. A regiment consists of 10 batteries, each with 12 guns for a total of more than 1,200 artillery pieces.

Other specialized units that do not consist of more than a single regiment include the Scouts, Engineers, Senate Guard, and Federal Gendarmerie.

The Marine Corps is a land force considered subordinate to the Navy but otherwise operates as an independent army; it consists of 15 Regiments. The Marines are considered the second most important component of the Portean Armed Forces, being the force that protects warships in port and at sea as well as perform amphibious operations. Their training is debated to be equal to or greater than that of the Mountain Infantry. The Marines are the ultimate raiding force, striking out from Navy warships onto land to take land and town by force of arms nearly unparalleled except in the most elite of other armies. They are armed with the Ferguson rifle and, in smaller quantities, the Hall rifle. The Marines also possess their own cavalry and artillery units, and these are portioned off to Marine forces as needed. The size and organization of their regiments are the same as that of the Federal Army, and units assigned to ships are subordinate to that ship's commander.

Size and Quality of Navy: Being a nation invested in maritime relations, the FAP considers the Navy as easily its most important branch. Though small, the nation relies extensively on free trade in order to survive. Hence, it is of the utmost importance that the FAP win any war that may possibly threaten trade. To that end, the FAP has created a formidable naval fighting force. Though it has yet to peak as the most powerful navy in the world, the Portean Navy is at this time considered among the best. The sailors that man its warships are highly disciplined and steadfast, proud of their heritage as such a powerful naval force. In terms of leadership and skill, the FAP is rarely challenged in its supremacy over the near seas. In addition to such depth of manpower quality, the FAP's arsenal of ships is of the kind that few are able to muster:

Ships-of-the-line: 115 vessels
  • 25x 1st Rate (100+ guns) (including the much-feared Imperious-class, 124 guns)
  • 33x 2nd Rate (90-100 guns)
  • 47x 3rd Rate (60-90 guns)
Frigates: 232 vessels
  • 76x 4th Rate (48-60 guns)
  • 156x 5th Rate (<48 guns)
Schooners: 51 vessels
Gunboats: 95 vessels

Total Warships: 493 vessels
