General Yomamoto died for the cause in the brief war that resulted. Akira was named Supreme Chairman of the Japanese People's Assembly, once North Japan had gained independence. The border between North Japan and South Japan, similar to the Korean situation, has become heavily fortified on both sides. Akira Yomamoto has stated plans to open relations with North Korea and China very soon.

What, exactly, would be the point of that?

In third world countries, that might make sense, but in the wealthier parts of the world, killing the majority of the locals would destroy the very thing that makes a country worth conquering.

EDIT: Iceland, for example, has no natural resources worth mentioning except for some fish (worth almost nothing in the international markets) and cheap energy (literally not possible to take out of the country). Kill the locals, and you lose pretty much all of the country's economic productivity.

History (if changed): The Communist Revolution in China succeeded, but not by as wide a margin, with the communists narrowly achieving victory. The assassination of Mao Zedong later in his rule gave hope to the people that they would one day be free from the oppressive boot of the Chinese Government. Mao was replaced by an "eccentric" leader named Fao Ming Li, who led the unnecessary conquest of Mongolia in what is know known to historians as "The North Chinese Resolution". The Election of a woman to the chairmanship of china 1988 was a huge extreme step in the advancement of Women's rights and other social policy in China, with homosexual union becoming legalized, though not marriage, and ethnic minorities being treated equally under the law. This would eventually lead to the regime's downfall. These acts were despised by the communist majority and the chairwoman, Ho Min Chi, was assassinated by the government communist radicals in 1991, 8 days before the fall of the Soviet Union. One other detail is the extremely strong ties between China and South Korea, who share a mutual hatred of the Japanese, since in this alternate reality the Anti-Japanese sentiment in China never waned, only festered.
The social climate is that of South Korea, and The Chinese are much more involved in world affairs. Reconstruction has mostly succeeded and made Eastern China more overall similar to Hong Kong and Seoul. Western China, however, maintains an air of Old China and communist terrorists still run amok. The major political parties are the Snake, Dragon, and Crane Parties, with several smaller parties also existing.
