In 1997, Penang as an opposition stronghold begins fracturing from the Malaysian government, and Johore follows suit. With the government's policies on favoring a specific race being detrimental for the Federation's unity, a crackdown on corruption erupts into a scale of political mud-flinging and scandals.
There were several promises from Singapore, especially if the policies were reformed into a non-communal nation. Pressure from China to enforce a reform, and Singapore's promise to add its economy into Malaysia upon a successful reunion is tempting enough to make a return to 1965, and after a crackdown of corrupt individuals, a large sweep and purge left the Malaysian government weak and fractured, but leadership from the South and the local Sultans managed to hold the Federation together.
With more influence from Singapore's civic policies starting from the south, Malaysia's Malays began to protest, albeit a minority over the years. At 2016, there was still unrest, limited to the Thai Border where Northern Malaysian Rebels and Thai Rebels still worked to enforce a Muslim presence in the Peninsula.
Malaysia has been modernized to a level of 2005 Singapore, utilizing the massive land space and population to run a strong industry and economy. Crime has been lowered through massive crackdowns and nationwide conscription which instilled a sense of discipline in the people. Enforced compulsory education managed to increase the literacy rate.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took over from Goh Chok Tong in 1991, guiding the reunion of the Peninsula with a strong unwavering hand. His policies of neutrality in world affairs was maintained, and a series of events in Malaysia allowed him to force a rejoining of Singapore and Malaysia by proposing tough measures often seen as draconian. However, the measures worked, and after several tough years of reformation and civil unrest in the north, New Malaya became strong under the leadership of Lee and his cabinet which included the traditional Sultans.

Nation Name: The Commonwealth of England
Character Position: Chancellor
Character Name: Eleanor Deckard
Flag of your nation:
One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit:Government Form: Despotic Authoritarian Oligarchy
The earliest origins of the modern nationstate of England can be traced to the early 2000s. Militant Islam had shown itself to the world with the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the English stood mustered alongside their American allies in a state of solidarity not seen since the Second World War. However, this state of affairs was not to last. The Irish Republican Army, emboldened by the success of international terrorism, conducted a series of devestating attacks on the British government and infrastructure. Funded by still unknown outside forces, the IRA battered the English government.
Drastic action became necessary.
With public support at an all-time high, the more xenophobic, nationalist elements of the English fought their way back into power. At the head of the new Nationalist Party was Eleanor Deckard, who campaigned on the promise of bringing the Irish to task for their failure to handle the IRA. In the political climate, she won by a landslide and the Nationalist Party secured the majority of Parliament. While the Nationalists began consolidating their power, the British military went to work on the IRA. At least, until the Irish government bit back. After a series of minor skirmishes, outright conflict began between the two nations in 2009, leading to the total annexation of Ireland into the United Kingdom by 2011. The conflict allowed for the establishmet of a draconian surveillance state, wary of the outside world and controlled with an iron fist by the Nationalist Party.
The conflict in Ireland would lead to the creation of a new English Commonwealth, heralding a fundamental change in English politics. Elections were now dominated by those of the Nationalist Party, and fear-mongering tactics kept the populace under the thumb of a despotic regime that now began to look hungirly towards lesser nations, especially with the dawn of resource scarcity.
ISIS' rise to power in the Middle East and the subsequent refugee crisis brought the Commonwealth into an increased state of xenophobia. Refugees were turned away at the borders, most horrifically with the Glasgow Shootings in March of 2016. The Chancellor barked that it was a sign of the boorish brutality of the Muslim faith, and yet behind closed doors her miltiary advisors worked to keep Middle Eastern oil in the Commonwealth by any means of coercion. It was not uncommon for the Commonwealth to use it's incredible special operations units to topple third world regimes, caring only to ensure that they could maintain their resource base.
As the modern world continues it's uneasy march into the future, the Commonwealth remains a fortress island, fighting the tide of progressive change that seemed to have swept much of the planet.

One paragraph history of your character:5038 - DO NOT REMOVE
Born into a wealthy English-American family, Eleanor Deckard spent much of her life aspiring to the highest levels of government. Years spent at prestigious schools had earned her many friends in the political world, and would eventually lead into her taking a position in the House of Commons. Many more years spent in smoky backrooms helped her worm her way further and further up the political ladder until reaching the highest annals of the newly formed Nationalist Party. At the risk of invoking cliche, that was history.
Now she rules to Commonwealth with an iron first, ensuring the populace is kept under the grasp of the government and corporate interest. Her surveillance policies, while initially contentious, eventually proved useful in not just curbing Islamic terror, but also political dissent. As a matter of fact, it was far easier to fabricate enemies for the police to fight than to handle the ones that really existed. The occasional successful bombing or asssasination was only fuel for her regime. While Parliament still exists to some extent, it's power has been neutered and primarily handed over to the military, who ensure that any civil discourse is violently punished.

I've been discussing with some of the other coops and I'm going to go ahead and deny this.
It's really a matter of there being too many pros and not enough cons. The Alt-History aspect needs to make a little sense, and I can't see this kind of borderline utopian Korean unification as working. Every nation should have some kind of issues it needs to work around, and this just doesn't have any form of internal strife or conflict.
I'd suggest a little reworking for balance, and I'll take another look at it.
