Volker's head tilted as a flock of parakeets exploded from the pool room, swept across the lobby, and swooshed up the stairs. A moment later, a dull rumble indicated the Building was up to mischief on the second floor - not that anyone but him would notice it. He needn't look further than the mailboxes for the source however. Perching on a mailbox knob, a yellow parakeet carefully peeled the Bela's apartment number from the metal surface to offer to a red parakeet. The bright bird twitched before hocking up a wad of spit.
Ptoo!
The glob landed on the back of the label. The red bird slapped it onto a new mailbox.
Volker rose and shuffled towards the mailboxes. The birds took flight upon his approach. A smile spread across his lips as his eyes scanned the boxes. Demens had apparently added more apartments to the floor. And, given Amanda's love for a corner unit and all its peaceful views, he had made adjustments to keep her happy.
