"For what reason have we come into the cold lands of Septentronia Daugorauthon?"

A pale skinned, black eyed man looked back at his comrade. The two had secured logging at a hotel in this strange foreign city, and it was clear that his companion was not taking well to it. Daugorauthon himself was not very fond of the cold lands that they had been sent to, but you can't no refuse orders from the top.

"As I told you before, the VSC wishes for us to provide "protection" for the national hockey team. There is some concern from the members that they will face protesters in their upcoming game against Dancougar. I think the fears are completed unfounded, but with Tobias gone and Lady Orome depressed, the paranoid Senate is running the show. We don't have many options if we refuse this assignment now do we?"

Glennlairon Vanmin was your typical elf, unlike Daugorauthon. He stood at a perfect five foot ten inches, weighed roughly one hundred fifty pounds, and had a peach tone compared to the near white of his companion. He also had shoulder length golden blonde hair and hazel eyes that reflected the depth of wisdom one accumulates over thousands of years of living, a far cry from the placid, somewhat menacing jet black eyes and hair of Daugorauthon. To any outsider, they seemed total opposites, with one reflecting what you expected from your typical Vanorian elf, while the other looked like more menacing and calculating creature that had deviated somewhere along the genetic line of the elves. Despite that, the duo appeared to be close companions, as each started to move around the room.

"I suppose we don't. It is not as if the Military Council would have any reason why they would need us right now, and with General Duke's unexplained fanaticism when it comes to the sports of the country, I suppose it should have been expected. Still, I dislike the fact that it had to be a cold place like Septentronia. Never have been one for the cold."

"Nor I good friend, nor I. In fact, I have yet to meet more than a handful of our countrymen who enjoy the cold. When considering our normal habitat, it makes all the more sense that we would not be flattered with the prospects of spending an elongated period of time in a place such as this. However, one has to wonder then how this team of ours performs so well in these competitions, and consequently, why their clubs perform well in the international tournaments. Logic would obviously say that peoples of a more cool native habitat would obviously be the more acclimated people to compete and succeed in a sport such a this."

"Perhaps you have been spending to much time with the officers Daugorauthon, you're starting to lose focus on the task at hand. Remember, we're here for the protection of the team, not to have a pihilosophical debate as to why the sport has become a success with our people. Remember the teachings of Danarth "The task at hand is the one that bears most attention. Follow it completely, and keep your mind from wandering. A divided mind is one that overlooks details and makes the mistake." Have you already forgotten your time at the Academy?"

"Nay, it's just that it is an odd occurrence that one would not expect to find within our species. Be that as it may, Danarth's words hold true regardless, even if this is not a true military assignment."

    The New Cleethorpes Enquirer
Räikkönen declares team to "ready to go", shrugs off baguette incident

Excitement in Quintessence of Dust is building before the first knockout round of the 9th World Cup of Hockey in Septentrionia, as the team sealed qualification thanks to a 7-2 butchering of 15th seeds Quakmybush, and saw rivals Toyur lose to Valanora. Despite being unranked newcomers, and the country's habitually terrible performance in all other sporting tournaments (including the ongoing football World Cup, where the national team racked up their worst ever start as they watched their hockey colleagues shoot goal after goal on television) many home fans had harboured muted hopes of "doing a Cassadaigua", yielding mixed results: the team qualified - but will now have to play Cassadaigua to advance further.

The two countries have had a brief but relatively eventful sporting rivalry in recent years, perhaps beginning with the Dagan team's triumph in the Winter Olympics in Kelssek, where they outpaced the highly fancied Quodite women on the slopes. Several meetings in international football ensued, and a couple of close baseball games at the 11th WBC. The stakes and history should add tension to the encounter, and coach Teuvo Räikkönen has been quick to stress that his players will pull no punches in the contact, after reading blog posts written by members of the Dagan squad complaining after the light hitting seen early in the group stages between teams with little rivalry.

After Sebestyen Szöllôsi scored twice against Quakmybush to quash any concerns about his health after bizarre pre-match comments, and with Alexei Kantola returning from suspension, the squad will be able to field a full strength side, although it is as yet unknown whether John Romkema or Edvard Bošnik will start in goal. Zack Sundqvist also improved his chances of time on ice after featuring in an unusual double: he scored two goals, and then celebrated as his sister Marina scored two (football) goals later a day later against Peisandros. He was named Kumquat of the Game while she was given the qPick Player of the Game Award.

Ice hockey's popularity in Quintessence of Dust means there was bitter disappointment when the small Olympic delegation failed to include a team, and participation in the Champions Hockey League has yielded few results of note, but qualification did not proceed as smoothly as many fans had hoped, with only 2 victories in 8 games. Until the unexpected whitewash over Quakmybush, everything hung in balance over Toyur. And the team has been dogged by off-the-rink issues that have at times distracted from preparation. Yet another incident flared up last night, though Räikkönen was quick to dismiss it.

Räikkönen was forced to respond to claims that the Septentrionian police had arrested Teapot centre Ben Gruenwald performing "a lewd act of public indecency" with a baguette while the team was out celebrating the Vanorian victory over Toyur that confirmed qualification. He was released and no charges are expected to be filed, but a small protest organized by pressure group Concerned Bakers For The Preservation Of Public Morals saw the team hotel bombarded by stale baked goods. "No one was hurt, but the croissants did cause some minor structural damage," said the hotel manager. The coach said the incident would not disrupt team preparations, but that he would work with the authorities to ensure the nation's bakeries remained safe in the future.

ICE GIRLS SHOW THEY BELONG

They were written off as a gimmick. Only for ratings and female athletes looked and shook their heads in dismay. While the majority of fans have been supportive of their efforts, they have had to go through far more ridicule then anyone on any other team has had to endure. They have had beer dumped on them during warmups, probably about a hundred different fans over the duration of the tournament toss their phone number over the ice on a piece of scrap paper. But they were here for the same reason that the other 39 nations were. To represent their country and play the game that they have learned to love. Eight wins in eight games later, it is the ladies having the last laugh as they have outplayed teams that should been much better and much stronger then them. They have played smart hockey, having been on 74 power plays during the eight games and only needing to kill off 12 penalties, going a perfect 12-for-12 in that span. There have been some who have criticized that such as Donald Strawberry, a jounalist from an unknown location, “Secristan is a disgrace to hockey! I don’t care how many games they win, they way they go about it sickens me. They have no respect for the game. Back where I was from we’d be hitting those girls so hard they wouldn’t show up for their next game. If they win the World Cup of Hockey something is seriously wrong!” Strawberry’s comments did not bother the team. In fact, most probably didn’t actually hear the words as he said as they were too busy commenting on his terribly colorful pants. Said Ashley T, “Those pants, yeah! I’m going to really listen to what a guy says wearing them!” So what has made the ice girls so good, and able to compete with the best of the world, most of which play professional hockey for a living. Katie W, the forward married to Kelssek’s Harry White tells us, “Harry m'a dit simplement de croire en nous-mêmes et ne pas écouter ce que les gens disent parce que quand on finira par l'emporter, il sera deux fois est la bonne!” In other words, she said something about her husband telling her to just believe in herself and not listen to what people say. Katie is developing a nice French accent, we must admit.

All arrogant, stuck-up, conceded or whatever comments I make in roleplay are always in-character and should not be interpreted as also being the out-of-character attitude of the person controlling the nation. My nation is my attempt to mock people I have to deal with often at work.

"And so, I mean, we've got to be careful about the fact that it's knockouts, and one game off, and we could be out of it altogether," Neville Keanes said, "and we really have to be on our best game every game..."

"Goddamnit, we've run out of beer!" realised Ben Connaught.

"Who are you talking to?" someone yelled at Neville.

"La bière, la bière, il n'y a pas de bière, tabernac, tabernac!!" someone else said.

"Just some TV reporters!" Neville yelled back.

"Can you ask them to get us some beer? We're in no shape to drive and it's cold outside."

"You pussy! It's not even below freezing! Call yourself a Kel-chek!" another voice from deeper inside the room said.

"Hey, I'm from Burnaby, right? Warmest bloody place in the country!"

Wholly discombobulated by the fact that a disorganised drinking session appeared to be the Kelssek team's preparation for a critical phase in the World Cup tournament, the TV reporter was at a loss for words.

"Ah, don't worry, the hangovers motivate them to hit opponents harder to clear their own heads," Neville Keanes assured him. "Now, you were saying about... something?"

World Cup of Hockey on AGAINST

Summary of Dancougar v Cassadaigua

On the final day of group play, the Wings were once again unable to get past the Dagans, who won comfortably enough 2-0. Justin Willens returned after having two matchdays to concentrate on regaining his form, and while he still picked up the loss, his 29 saves represented an improvement. Not just in save percentage, but in the defense - they gave up 41 shots last time around. Then again, the Dagans might not have been playing at full steam. They didn't need to, since the playoffs weren't on the line. Dancougar just managed to sneak in on a tiebreaker with Ad'ihan, and their reward?

Summary of Dancougar v Valanora

A matchup with the number one team in the world. Well... damn.

Any hope for one of those "miracles on ice" was misplaced, as the elves rolled to a 3-0 lead through one period of play. After Willens let in a fourth goal at 6:39 in the second, he was pulled to try and stop the bleeding. Whether he deserves all the blame for the team's decline in after the first match with Cassadaigua is questionable, since the entire team didn't seem to be playing as fast or as ferocious as they needed to. Perhaps they'd hit the wall much earlier and limped through the rest of the group stage thanks to some real luck. Time will tell for sure.

In the meantime, though, backup Lawrence Sarmiento would close out the second period without allowing a goal in 12 shots faced, and Dancougar would pull one back through team captain Anthony Brancanto. But it was too little too late; Valanora scored a minute into the third and would add a goal in garbage time after the Wings had been physically exhausted. Chad Chudzinski managed to score in response to the first goal, but the result was anything but flattering. A long trip home for the Black Wings, perhaps, but in making the knockout stage in its first attempt, the team hasn't accomplished nothing. They'll be back and gunning for more.

Final Team Stats 1

Leading the way with seven goals was team captain Anthony Brancanto, but they were his only points of the tournament; perhaps if he was able to dish it out as well as linemate Floyd Jacaruso, who led the team with five helpers, the team would have played more balanced hockey. Goalie Justin Willens played respectably all things considered.

Plutoni national ice hockey blog: WCoH 9, First Playoff Round:
Taebreakers not necessary

Plutoni stormed to a 4-0 victory against Taeshan in the playoffs of the World Cup of Ice Hockey, four goals to none. Goshin Delma started things off with an eleventh-minute goal, and Rachelle Conary would add another on the powerplay in the second period. Oli Marean returned to the ice, but he wouldn't be much help. Shrindli Clom scored to close out the second, and Milo Young made it 4-0 in the final period. It is Plutoni's fourth victory by four goals. They will face United Wiedna in the quarterfinals, who upset Secristan in overtime.

Comments:
1. bocky_boy: Is it just me or does the headline look sort of weird?
2. knightryder: complete ripoff, marean should of never been in the box and if it hadn't been for that second goal things would have been totally different.
3. seb: You can make my eyes hurt with these colors and we still don't get our old fonts back?
4. icebaby: Nice job with the predictions there, whiteout.
5. bocky_boy: [2] Eh, Sigurðsson was strict, but he was fair. McCourt got a couple minors too.
6. delayed_miracle: [1] We've never been in the playoffs since this blog went up! Thanks everyone for all the fun in the meantime.
7. icebaby: [5] Careful with the copying-and-pasting of the you-know-whats.
8. seb: ...Wait, United Wiedna? Only unranked team in the quarterfinals? I like what I'm seeing.
You're not a vacuum; you're a black hole!

Re: World Cup of Hockey 9 Everything thread

Postby Plutoni » Wed Jul 08, 2009 8:27 am

In retrospect, it made sense that United Wienda would have started the game attacking. They'd just been through overtime, after all--they didn't necessarily need to return. The goal came only five minutes in, blistering from the left wing. Though she turned away shot after shot, Ella Kolvitt was riding on nervous energy.

At least until Lintsa Tameen tied the game, and Ockans Dervy sent Plutoni ahead.

They weren't quite coasting after that, but riding along comfortably, because it was only Un--

--and then they'd tied it just like that, eleven minutes to play. Eleven stressful minutes, trying to keep their heads clear, focused, ready. Ella was trying, anyway. It didn't seem like all of her teammates felt the stress in the same way. She didn't expect them to.

But they handled the game as best they could, with no further score. Then into overtime. She was tired, having been on the ice the whole game--but with less skating to do, her legs were as strong as her teammates'. It was her mind that couldn't stay focused. What would they do if the period ended with no score? In the pro leagues, they'd just play another full period, but the international game was different...

Vasuda Hesse dropped back. "Ella!" he mouthed. "Bench!"

"What?" Indignant, she spun her head towards Coach Koff, who was waving her in. It made no sense! Down by one with that little to play in regulation, yes, but in...Oh. Disp Lawklo had suited up, pads and all.

Waiting until the puck was safely at the United end, she whizzed across the ice. "What's this for?" she asked angrily.

"Penalty shootout," said Tlatt. "Lawklo's simply bigger than you are, and can stop more."

Ella tried to be offended, but she felt more confused, like the coach had said something important she was missing. Before she could talk to him, though, overtime had ended. The shootout lay ahead.

Plutoni would shoot first. Nurma Bonx unleashed what appeared to be a bad attempt at a slapshot--the other goalie barely had to move his stick. His compatriot was equally unsuccessful, however, mistiming his final turn and barely sending the puck anywhere near the net.

Lintsa returned confidently (it seemed) to take the second shot. The assistant captain moved diagonally towards the goal before pivoting and charging in. Not surprising enough. No goal.

The next shooter (who happened to come from North Wiedna) performed a series of would-be dekes. Disp patiently waited until the real shot was unleashed and caught it easily. Next came Rachelle Conary. She approached slowly, almost earning a stalling call, before sending a timid shot without enough force to be successful. Fortunately, the underdogs' third shooter did just as poorly. Ella wasn't familiar with penalty shootouts, but she didn't think they were supposed to be like that.

Tristan McCourt was up, his eyes in their usual dance of anger and disdain. He wouldn't throw this away out of spite, would he? Tlatt knew better than to pick somebody...

There he went. He'd started as far away as possible, changing his angle every now and again. It looked almost like a slapshot when he finally release the puck, except for the way his wrists were tensed--that thing had altitude. Just enough to fly over the goalie's shoulder and into the net.

Nerves of a different sort now. Could they hold on? The following shooter was too worried about his team suddenly trailing, and sent an erratic shot. Ackle Blund had a chance to put the game out of reach...and utterly failed to take advantage of it.

The fifth opposing shooter took his time, clearly pinpointing where he wanted to send the puck. It had lots of speed--but Lawklo plucked it out of the air. "Machinelike", any other country would call it. Plutoni was in the semifinals.

And then she realized what had been nagging at her. "Coach," she asked afterwards, "why don't they just make goalies bigger than the net?"

"That would just kill the game."

"What? Is this another thing about how humans can't compete--"

"For Open competition? It wouldn't be much of a game if nobody could score."

She was about to protest, but all of a sudden Samuel Lucent was there. "Hey! You all heard Valanora lost?"

And the same old mix of nerves and hope pushed them forward.
You're not a vacuum; you're a black hole!

Plutoni national ice hockey blog: WCoH 9, Semifinals:
Ps in!

A 2-1 victory over the host nation, Septentrionia, saw Plutoni advance to its first-ever World Cup of Ice Hockey final. Ackle Blund scored first with five minutes remaining in the first period, off a pass from Goshin Delma, and Lintsa Tameen scored in the second period. Alexis Drolet pulled the hosts within one as the second period wound down, but the third was scoreless. The final will be a rematch with group-stage opponents Prux, who beat Kelssek in a shootout, in the Stade du Rivage.

Comments:
1. icebaby: Prux? Well, win or lose, this should be fun. No energy to save for tomorrow...I want action!
2. bocky_boy: Looks like the Stade is a converted international-rules football stadium. Can't tell if this will help either team more, Prux will probably find a way to turn it to their advantage.
3. seb: Legal or not.
4. delayed_miracle: I'm so nervous. Are we going to be liveblogging this one? I'm not sure if I'll be able to stand it...
5. Official_Blog: Good idea. Check back later today for our decision.
