But in all seriousness, yes, the state is allowed to aqquire slaves.

Slavery and indentured servitude are legal against criminals and prisoners of war, with government license.

But the slavery doesn't extend to any children born of the slaves.

Slavery is one of the few things that is actually completely illegal in Aeiouia. Although, we do not know why anyone would want to do it. Not only is it barbaric, but we have a post-scarcity economy. Slave labor seems pointless when you have matter replication technologies.

When encountering nations that use slavery, since we are pacifists, we have a policy to peacefully buy as many slaves as possible off of them. Then, grant said slaves total freedom and complete citizenship in our nation. Although it still does not feel right giving funds to slave traders, we refuse to solve problems with violence.

Of course slavery is legal in my nation. It's good for business. Although the new government will probably outlaw it soon.

Yes, but our concept of slavery is much broader than that of others. Slavery is also highly regulated, especially by the Censorate, to prevent abuses. With the exception of one type of slavery (thralldom) everything is voluntary (other choices are offered and generally taken), applies only to the individual and not their family or offspring, and has a set time limit. Most slavery is volunteered for due to an individual's sense of honor (or preference for slavery over imprisonment) rather than a legal requirement.

Thing considered Slavery by Tyrandel:
  • Indentured servitude, one of the four options for criminal punishment. Indentured servants keep their rights to everything but their labor. Abuses of indentured servants are dealt with severely and will result in the service contract be declared void with no further punishment of the criminal/servant. Indentured servants may not leave the country. A contract of indentured servitude may be sold to the State only, nobody else is allowed to purchase it. Attempting to sell the contract instantly voids it.
  • Conscription is another of the options for criminal punishment that can be offered by the State, almost always in times of war. Conscription is considered slavery to the State and though it refers mostly to military conscription, rarely someone may be conscripted for something else. Conscription of non-criminals is rare and most of the military is composed of peasant militias and members of the Martial Noble Houses.
  • Collateral bondage is where someone uses themselves as collateral, usually for a short time and generally for a debt. Informal unenforceable variants are much more common than legally enforceable ones. Informal bondings are usually fulfilled out of honor rather than legal obligation, lasting only a few hours or so, and are more common between members of the nobility than other social classes. Most of them tend to be along the lines of the loser of some challenge or duel having to do something embarrassing for the winner.
  • Thralldom is the taking of personal slaves. It is the closest to the standard concept of slavery, effectively being a limited version of chattel slavery. Thralls have no rights, their offspring are also thralls, can be sold as commodities, and are referred to as an 'it' in all legal documents. Thralldom is also only permitted when directly authorized by the Emperor, the Grand Prince or the Seneschal. It has not been authorized in over 400 years and a declaration of emancipation about 250 years ago freed the last remaining thralls. It is however a theoretical possibility that it would be authorized during a war. Most speculate that the only reason it still exists is to act as a deterrent to hostile actions against Tyrandel. The only real other purpose for it as of now is erotic history stories and kinky roleplay scenarios.

And then there's BDSM. But that's probably not what you're asking about.

Slavery is a widespread and common practice in Rome. Conquered peoples viewed as lesser are often taken as slaves and sold throughout the Empire, where they serve mainly as labourers on privately-owned farms, in mines and the villae of wealthy landowners.

Better educated slaves sometimes serve as tutors and carers to the children of wealthy families. Such slaves are treated better than most.

Slavery is not legal in Gandoor. It was legal from our nation's founding in 1587 until 1783, however it was still uncommon then, due to many laws regulating it, including prohibition on the enslavement of the native people of Gandoor, any citizen of Gandoor, etc.)

In addition to slavery being illegal within Gandoor, our government does not recognize ownership over any other sapient beings and any enslaved person who enters Gandoorese territory is considered free.

Slavery in the Most Serene Republic has been legal since our nation was founded over three thousand years ago. The vast majority of citizens started as slaves. In a way, it is the easiest way to join Kaiserholt. The institution remains a great source of population increase, and we are proud of it.
