Malaysia Airlines Plane Incident

Postby Larupia » Fri Mar 07, 2014 6:51 pm

For the whole source: http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/my/en/s ... -site.html
The 2nd Media Statement:
We deeply regret that we have lost all contacts with flight MH370 which departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.41 am earlier this morning bound for Beijing. The aircraft was scheduled to land at Beijing International Airport at 6.30am local Beijing time. Subang Air Traffic Control reported that it lost contact at 2.40am (local Malaysia time) today.

Flight MH370 was operated on a Boeing B777-200 aircraft. The flight was carrying a total number of 239 passengers and crew – comprising 227 passengers (including 2 infants), 12 crew members. The passengers were of 13 different nationalities. Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft. Our team is currently calling the next-of-kin of passengers and crew.

Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilize its full support. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members. The airline will provide regular updates on the situation.

The public may contact +603 7884 1234. For media queries, kindly contact +603 8777 5698/ +603 8787 1276.

Next-of-kin may head to the Support Facility Building at KLIA’s South Support Zone. For directions, call 03 8787 1269.

I seriously hope everyone is alright. The only thing that wasn't mentioned however, was that the plane lost contact (although I have to agree it's obvious the plane's crashed) over Vietnamese Airspace. But other than that, my thoughts are with everyone on and with relation to MH370.

That's a very odd location for an aircraft, particularly a modern one, flying from Malaysia to China to go missing. Crashing during the cruise phase of the flight is very rare indeed.

Some rumors going around that the plane landed safely at Nanning, China. However, this seems to be very unlikely; BBC is reporting that China claimed that it never entered Chinese airspace.

It's not really possible to make any conclusions, but this is eerily similar to early reports of the Air France 447 disaster.

It's cliche, but I'm hoping for the best for these people. If it did crash, I hope that they could at least ditch into water.

Didn't the 777 have problems with ice crystals ending up in a thermal transfer system in the GE engines?

Counterintuitively, a crash-landing is better than ditching at sea.

When you're talking about an airplane crash, the speed and mass involved is great enough that surface tension effectively removes the difference between landing on water and landing on concrete.

Taking into account experienced pilots, they're more capable of adapting to the intricacies of landing on terrain than they are water, what with the varying depths and turbulence of water, and the issue of sustaining life immediately following the crash.

The time it takes to find and recover a plane wreckage is more than enough to drown.

I don't think the terrain in Vietnam (which, apparently, is where contact was lost) is amiable to emergency landings, though...

Although, with water you can at least guarantee clear space to land and come to a stop. Clear, obstruction free land is at a premium generally speaking.

The fact that nothing was heard from the aircraft before it went missing makes me think whatever happened was sudden and that the pilots had no chance to save the plane unfortunately.

I'm confident that there is flat land in 'nam.

Based on the picture, I'm surprised that nobody died.

It was the Rolls-Royce engined model that had the heat exchange flaw. The plane on this flight seems to have RR engines, actually, but the heat exchange was modified after it was discovered (following the British Airways flight 38 crash). Also, I doubt that even if the flawed heat exchanger was installed on the plane in question it would've caused the loss of the airplane if it occurred in cruise at high altitude; a similar incident occurred on another 777, but it was at a sufficient altitude that recovery was a pretty simple matter.

so, this'd be the second fatal 777 accident?

The 777 has certainly not had a good past few months, then...

According to Yahoo News Malaysia;

"UPDATE [12:37]: Tuoi Tre, a leading daily in Vietnam, reports that the Vietnamese Navy has confirmed the plane crashed into the ocean. According to Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of the Region 5, military radar recorded that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 153 miles South of Phu Quoc island."

Doesn't look good.

Damn. This is a bad. Hopefully they ditched successfully although I doubt it. At any rate I look forward to seeing if they can find the flight data recorder to see what exactly happened.

Actually the roof being messed up on Aircraft wrecks is often due less to the crash and more to the Airport Fire trucks. The things have big arms and equipment that smashes into the plane to put out fires. It's pretty cool.
