Baptism of Fire 55 Bid & OOC Chatter

Did you know that if you add up all the numbers between 1 and 10 you get 55?

And 55 BCE (sometime in August), Julius Caesar commanded the first Roman invasion of Britain.

Most importantly however, is that it is the 55th incarnation of the Baptism of Fire which Paradystopia and the Northern Sunrise Islands wish to state their intentions to host.

The first thing you're probably asking yourself is ...
How many more trivial facts do you have regarding the number 55?
Oh ... ermm ... Pokémon number 55 is Golduck. Anything else?
Who are you guys and what makes you think you're capable of running such a tournament?
Good question. Allow us to explain.

Paradystopia has been around the NS sports forums for a while now usually managing to role-play sporting events whilst barely mentioning the sport in question and maintaining a healthy penchant for absurdity. As a scorinator, he runs the IRLCC tournament in rugby league (with The Licentian Isles), has hosted Campionato Esportiva VII (as The Glorious Commune), the athletics events in the Esportivan Festival, the World Badminton Championships III and has a wide collection of domestic leagues in a variety of different sports.
The Northern Sunrise Islands joined NS in mid 2011 and have been active ever since, even during hard times personally and "professionally", always maintaining the common Pokémon roots that came around at the start of the nation with lots of Shout Outs every now and then. As a scorinator, the Sunrise has been responsible for the World Cup of Hockey 22, the first Campionato Esportivano di Campeones and a U-15 World Cup, aside from dozens of leagues every cycle as part of the slightly-popular Heritage Cup.

Satisfied?
Ok, so you're capable of using a scorinator. Care to elaborate on how exactly you plan to scorinate the BoF?
Well ...
... and how do you plan to structure the tournament?
Interrupt much? Sheesh ...

Structure-wise is difficult to say until we have a full compliment of entries. It will be the tried-and-tested group stage and knockout format though. Groups of four or five, top two or so advance to a knockout (with a playoff, if necessary). Obviously, once we're closer to the end of sign-ups we'll announce a considerably less vague version of our proposed format.
Regarding tiebreakers in the group stage, these will be number of wins, goal difference and H2H result. Should the teams remain tied after all these, a tiebreaker match will occur. This will consist of a separately scorinated match in which the other host will individually grade the RPs of the teams in question and scorinate disallowing draws.
For scorination we'll be using the most up-to-date version of xkoranate with the SQIS formula.
Oh, and we'll be allowing style mods between -5 and +5.

What about the RP bonuses? You will be taking RP into consideration won't you?
Why would we do a thing like that?!

Kidding, obviously.

RPs will be graded between 0 and 3 on a completely fluid scale, meaning 2, 1.649 and 0.739235845 are all feasible RP scores (except for 0.739235845, as beyond 3 or 4 decimal places is scarcely relevant but you get the idea). RP will be judged generously but to score a 3 will require something technically perfect; a truly engrossing tale of sheer epic beauty. We are looking for interesting perspectives, creative storylines or just good clean insightful journalism. If we find something enjoyable to read, it will score well. Length will not be taken into account when judging RPs, but be aware that a three sentence paragraph has extremely little chance of receiving a decent score.

I have other questions you haven't answered in your rambling semi-schizophrenic OP. What should I do?

Reply with your question and NSI or I will endeavor to answer it at our earliest convenience

Hang on, just one more thing. Do you have any plans for something extra? You know, a bit of an additional challenge?
We're glad you asked because yes. Yes, we do.

For a bit of fun, there will be a Goal of the Tournament challenge. For between the final and the start of the World Cup, we'll look through the thread to find what we think to be the goals of the tournament, combine them into one neat post and then open it up as a vote for everyone.

Thanks for reading

Why call a tiebreak match a coin flip instead of a tiebreak match?

Awesome bid overall, though. But you only needed 52 more facts for the perfect number...

Working on it!

DID YOU KNOW
...that the 55th reign of the World Heavyweight Championship, with Randy Orton, was the last one of the belt before it was unified with the WWE title?

...that the first reign of Stone Cold Steve Austin with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship lasted 55 days?

...that legendary color wall-breaker Jackie Robinson won his sole World Series in 1955 with the then Brooklyn Dodgers?
Tails... Watch out, you're gonna crash, aaaaah!

Other than the fact that I think you've got your three main tie-breakers backward, I think this is a fine bid and you're both well qualified to make it fun for the new players.

Righty ho Guys.

As we've reached that point in the sign-ups, I guess it's time NSI and myself announce our tournament plan.

As it stands, there are 50 nations who've stated a wish to participate in the BoF and should our bid be chosen, we'd intend to keep it like that and would ask that sign-ups close at this point.

The 50 teams will be divided into ten groups of five (five groups in each nation) and will play a single round-robin. After this, the top team of each group and the 2 best second-placed teams will advance straight into the knockout round. Of the remaining 8 second-placed teams, a single leg playoff will whittle this number down to 4 and give us our final 16. Knockout round, knockout round and knockout round and we're at the final.

Simple.

You forgot the part of the bid where Bonticello automatically qualifies to the Finals

Alrighty, makes good sense to me.

SInce you will have a top 2 second placed teams advance automatically, Will their base nation be a factor? (i.e. One best team from each nation)

I'm afraid I don't follow ...

At the end of the group stage, all second-placed teams will be placed into a table which will calculate their ranking (amongst the second-place finishers) in accordance with our designated tiebreakers. The two teams who fall 1st and 2nd within this table will be awarded the final automatic qualification spots with the other 8 having to fight it out for a place in the round of sixteen.

It doesn't appear that this has been corrected, which would put the current BoF count to 51, thus making numbers that little bit more awkward.

Having just checked Scorpio's post history, it seems that Scorpio posted in both the World Cup 65 and World Cup 67 signup threads, but a search of the relevant World Cup results threads and the relevant BoF threads for "Scorpio" turns up no results. Therefore, it appears that Scorpio is indeed BoF eligible.

How do you intend to handle this situation, since you've now got 51 signups, not 50?

(Underlined and italicised text mine)

Both NSI and myself would like to extend our apologies to Nexxus Drako for having to resort to this, but also our thanks. Having spent a great deal of time on IRC discussing numbers and how to organise a fair group stage for all involved, this was the only feasible option. Things like 13 groups of 4 (52 entrants), 9 groups of 6 (54 entrants) or 11 groups of 5 (55 entrants) were all considered to allow everyone currently signed up a place. Even some bizarre two-tier group stage set-ups (54 entrants: 18 groups of 3, top two advance to 6 groups of 6) were looked at but the numbers proved too cumbersome to provide a coherent tournament.

We're also both aware that we have not yet been chosen as official hosts.

Kid, that's not really the format we're rolling with if we win. We sadly have to cut Yveltal out because of the result being an odd number. I suggested that we had an odd group, but that would cause even more trouble, so we're sticking with this. Anyways, we would run the tournament as said by Para not too long ago.

So, to sum up, no potato-bag racing, no double elimination, no Hell in a Cell play-off, no Billiards Play-off or Three-Way-Footie-Match-in-a-Barbed-Wire-Cage, guys. Just one guy had to be cut and that's it.

Should we win the bid, and Yveltal not get to participate, here's a little homage ...

May I ask why you have chosen to stick with 50? You have reiterated you will but not offered justification.
Also, your logo has disappeared
Also also, a puppet offered to withdraw from the BoF to make way should the 50 team format be used.

Because it sounded more reasonable than to wait for more people to join as we hardly imagined the current status of the sign-ups would allow such possibility.

Para moved it around at Photobucket. He said he would fix that up, but in the meantime.

INSTA BACKUP!

We are aware that Nexxus Drako's puppet gave up so that we could run the tournament without problem if we get to host this event, so... yeah, we know.

Sorted.

Kaldtland signed up after the deadline so their sign-up was never included upon the list meaning their subsequent withdrawal is irrelevant.

Also also also, 50 teams means that 25 teams will play their group stage in each nation, 5 groups of 5, five five, 55, which seems appropriate.

Now someone stop Farf before he goes on another numbers rampage ...

They are also all controlled by the same user.

New Koln is therefore in violation of the World Cup signup rules.

So, with that on mind, let's sum up what will happen now.

Yveltal is allowed back in, like it should be.

The other spot left around will be filled by either Serebro (who Para is already trying to contact) or Kaldtland.

And now I can't yell "All Greek" whenever something really stupid happens.

So then we're kicking both of New Koln's puppets out?
