ESSENTIAL BACKGROUND:
Ossidiacqua is a nation coming blinking into the light of the international community. In what seems like mere years ago for most nations, as Oasirica, they sent a team to the Baptism of Fire. Meanwhile, at home, with a terrible disease name la Plaga ravaging the country, the academics of the nation prepared to put up a time wall around the central hospital that would allow medics and scientists on the inside to spend months developing a cure or vaccine for la Plaga, whilst only days passed outside the time wall, allowing the maximum population to be saved. However, it went wrong, and the time wall surrounded the entire nation, cutting off the Baptism of Fire squad. Months passed outside the wall, whilst centuries passed inside it. La Plaga decimated the native population, leaving Djocorangan refugees in the nation untouched and ensuring they became the primary caregivers and nation re-builders. This also means that today, 99.9% of all Acquans are black in skin tone.

The time wall eventually dissipated after 270 years, labelled 'The Pause Time' by those inside the wall, revealing the nation of Ossidiacqua to the world for the first time. It was a much changed place, the weather, land, and cities had all changed, and the genetic heritage of the population had shifted from 99% Oasirican and 1% Other, to 97% Djocorangan and 3% Old Oasirican, and the paragraphs below the roster go some way to explaining some of what has happened as a consequence. You are also encouraged to read the series of RPs written during Oasirica's BoF, as they will provide a lot of back story that informs this complicated nation:

ROSTER AND TACTICS:
So, here is the squad, nicknamed la Renaissance, as put together by manager Yoann Vega ever since the tragic and entirely accidental death of former manager Alessio Cardinale. Vega is assisted by Cardinale's old assistant, Gregorio Di Falco. Last time around, Vega's men achieved what no other Acquan side has ever done, and reached the finals of the World Cup against all odds. Highly unfancied, they scored five goals but failed to win a single point. Despite this huge leap in progress, that side was old, and many have since retired. This new roster therefore contains many players that are making their debuts on the international scene, many from the current golden generation of CA Conquistadores' all conquering club side (and indeed, eight players from the giant Sant'Elia club make up the twenty three, including three in the starting line-up). Despite Conquistadores reaching what is a record high international club ranking, the influx of new players into this squad means the Acquans are not tipped to make a second appearance in the finals.

The Acquan game was cut off from the rest of the multiverse for 270 years, and as such developed a unique flavour and style of its own. Short passes, keeping possession, and running are the key to the majority of play, with Acquan teams keen to instil a sense of duty in their players that leads to any of them being able to play or deputise in any other position during the course of a match. The players are very capable with the ball, and have developed tricks and flicks enough to bamboozle any opponent - way, way ahead of their time as far as the rest of the multiverse is looking at it. However, they have much to learn about the way the rest of the footballing community plays the game, and with the Acquan game developing a far higher tolerance for rough and tumble, even the silkiest of attacking forwards (and in this squad there are four outstanding interchangeable strikers) can find themselves sent off for an illegal tackle that would have been perfectly legal in the Acquan leagues. Therefore, it would be of great help to me if you could RP my team as technically gifted, but tactically naive, and as far as international standards go, incredibly violent. Thank you.

Home Stadium: An archaic stone construction in the centre of Sant'Elia, Il Colosseo. Lit by oil lamps and featuring vast walls of stained glass, it seats 103,450 and is a treasured landmark, being one of the first building built by Acquans following the eradication of la Plaga, as the nation began to reinvent itself during the Pause Time.
Image

Supporters: True to form for a nation whose people are generally scared witless of technology, the Acquans traditionally don't travel in huge numbers. However, that is all to change, and nations preparing themselves to face La Renaissance on the football pitch must now also prepare themselves for the arrival of a fleet of poorly maintained airships that contain scores of rabid Acquan supporters. Airships not being the fastest method of transport however, they may sometimes arrive a bit late. Like, weeks...

Assassins: After he resigned as the Magisterium's mole in the footballing administration to focus on just coaching, then-assistant Yoann Vega was trailed by a score of assassins during WC62 Qualifying on the orders of His Excellency Grand High Cardinal Giocomo Re. Several botched attempts and many dead assassins later, the manager of the national team Alessio Cardinale was tragically killed by an errant crossbow bolt that was intended for Vega, causing a minor scandal in New Montreal States in the process. Now manager of the team, Yoann Vega is likely to continue being a target of the Magisterium and Giocomo Re.

Velasquez: There must always be a Velasquez captaining the national side. It's best not to ask why, its just a thing that has to happen. Having fathered a son aged just twenty, the last captain, Ricardo Velasquez, has finally retired and handed the armband over to his eldest, Emmanuel, already a father himself at the age of just twenty-two.

The land of Oasirica was a large and beautiful one. After suffering the ravages of an unpredictable climate and loss of knowledge during the Pause Time, it has been transformed by the Djocorangan survivors of la Plaga into the Former Oasirican Republic of Ossidiacqua. Consisting of one main island and a handful of surrounding smaller ones, it can be found towards the north-west of the Vatmark region of Rushmore. The capital city of Sant'Elia is by far the biggest conurbation, and it whilst it used to shine with its golden spires and silver domes, it is now a shambolic and chaotic mix of alleyways and squares and piazzas, though the Acquans are making every effort to restore the city to its former glory, even getting the steam powered monorail back up and running, and employing a dirigible courier service.

Clean running water used to flow across the land and around the cities in an extensive network of aqueducts, channels, and canals. The continued eruption of volcanoes in the large Patriarchate of Vul in the east of the country during the Pause Time has affected this however, located over extensive mineral deposits as they were. These deposits included a huge amount of obsidian, obsidian that was distributed through the land in huge quantities, tainting the water, and giving the nation its new name. The water the flows is now nearly jet black in colour, and requires extensive treatment before it can be used as drinking water, leading the Acquans to rely on condensers that extract moisture from the dry air and from boiled off water vats often situated near rivers. These condensers often break, and are fixed by tech-priests who use mainly copycat work and guesses accompanied by some rather frenzied prayer rather than any informed ability to fix and maintain the machines, the knowledge for which died with the rapid spread of la Plaga. The weather is taking longer to recover from the time wall than expected, and the land whilst not particularly hot, is still exceptionally dry. The Oasiricans were a highly educated and cultured race, and the fall and loss of knowledge is embarrassing to the Acquans.

The patriarchate governmental system has moved from the old religion to one offering praise to a mechanical deity of no name, only various titles, with tech-priests and those in the Magisterium holding a high amount of respect. Since the dubious death of the former president, it is the maniacal Grand High Cardinal Giocomo Re who is in charge of the country, supposedly on an interim basis.

Football in Ossidiacqua is the national sport, and support is fanatical, with excitement only increasing in intensity thanks to the recent successful hosting of the Baptism of Fire alongside Iturributa. The Campiocinato continued during the Pause Time as a way to keep spirits up and has been running for 314 seasons as the football league structure in the country, with three divisions, A-Liga, B-Liga, and C-Liga. The league has dominated by the three big Sant'Elia clubs; CA Conquistadores (70 Campiocinatos), Condensadores CD (62), Caballeros CF (60), as well as by Qolo-Qolo (48), of Sant'Antioco. Of the other sides, Internazionale (23), Atletico Sant'Elia (17), Unión Gimignano CF (17), AS Débardeurs Nationale (11), Magisterio AC (9), Académica di Terrabianco (4), RCD San Marco (1), Clube Cobreloa (1), and FC Sommieres Hibernia (1) are the other clubs to have sealed a title so far.

The Astograth National Football Team

Manager - Image Edorta Urrustoy
Edorta Urrustoy, the first Astograthian footballing superstar, has come full circle. In 3 years, the last of his career, he bloomed at Pazhujebi club Juvapanam, won 50 caps and entrenched himself forever in the nation's collective imagination, his position as a classic defensive midfielder being rendered tribute by a number of Olibondeka's most talented players. Working as a pundit after retirement, a bizarre twist of fate led to him becoming legendary Yaforian manager Shaan Magerin's right-hand man at the Bleak Rock national team, and from there he was offered a job at boyhood club Urbizania Wanderers. The rest is history, as they say, having taken them to become the first Astograthian club to lift the UICA Champions' Club.

Now? Now he's been made Olibondeka's manager after Sir James Handel's sacking, following a third failed World Cup qualifying run in a row - a catastrophe not even the most pessimistic could have predicted following at the onset of World Cup 63. His task? Bring the olive-greens back to the top, despite a lacklustre Copa Rushmori. To that end he's mixed things around; this side will feature no defensive midfielders and a more forward approach, with two strikers spearheading an attack at opposites to the more back-minded midfield he used at Urbizania Wanderers. With the international retirement and exclusion of several players, he has also brought in a number of young prospects and other uncapped outsiders... a potentially profitable gamble, and who said you can't win anything with kids anyway?

Starting XI:

#1 - GK – Alarabi Galayarde - Age 30 - Royal Rumiatzi – Uncapped
In a bold move, Urrustoy has responded to the shifts in club form by bringing in Galayarde as starting keeper, only slightly edging the previously first-choice Logegaray. Royal Rumiatzi's number 1 was widely agreed to be the best in last season's First Division and has been a long time waiting for a call-up; to stay there he'll have stiff competition and only a few matches to prove himself worthy.

#3 - LB - Ekain Ziaurriz - Age 26 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls – 5 caps
Ever so quietly, Ekain Ziaurriz shined at Oyardo FC and won the league with Echegoyan FC, drawing the attention of the rapidly-rising Surtsey. His position was not favoured by Handel, however, and after being repeatedly overlooked is now finally at Olibondeka - and very eager to prove himself, as the latest Astograthian to make headlines in the Divisjon One.

#4 - CB - Yokin Arizmande - Age 30 – Urbizania Wanderers - 103 caps, 3 goals
A product of the Royal Vosaroni Antenelli youth academy in Erathore, Arizmande then spent several successful years at Niccostrato, in keeping with the Erathi custom of teenaged players. Having returned to his homeland, he has solidified himself as one of the leading defenders in the First Division and the national team. At his peak, his play is exquisite, blending physical presence with speed, tactical awareness and fine technical skills - all of which are pushed to the limit by the demanding Urrustoy, at club and now country level.

#2 - CB - Anartz Agirrebenia - Age 27 - Royal Rumiatzi - 34 caps
Having previously been used to cover as sweeper for Arizmande, Agirrebenia has earned himself a big-money transfer to Royal Rumiatzi and a place on the national team's starting lineup. Having operated at the heart of defense for the ultra-defensive Blue Mountain Range since the youth teams, he has especially bred for this very role and occasion. He has the vision, the calm and the technique to carry out the job - on a good day, he and Arizmande are simply impenetrable.

#17 - RB – Kimetz Obonaga - Age 20 - Oyardo FC - 3 caps
The youngest member of the squad, Obonaga is fairly untried at the international level but has rapidly become one of Oyardo's regulars, with a very bright future ahead. Smart, quick and a good passer, he also has the ability to attack down the right flank, though isn't expected to be employed in that capacity.

#7 - LM - Koldobika Benitzaizin - Age 28 - Echegoyan FC - 33 caps
Spirited and combative, Benitzaizin can run, can do so for a good while, and can dribble his way through tight defenses. Crossing isn't his strong point and has held him back before, but Urrustoy has a more incisive approach planned out for him - having the wingers as a direct goal threat should ensure a formidable multi-pronged attack.

#15 - CM – Ikatz Alberro (C) - Age 34 - Ituraitz FC – 115 caps, 11 goals
Alberro has overcome injury troubles to situate himself as one of the all-time great Astograthian players in a position with a long tradition in the nation, guiding Ituraitz FC to unprecedented international glory and earning the Astograthian captain's armband for his trouble after the retirement of Urtzi Galard. He is adept at finding space in thick midfields, whether to stick a pass in or muscle his way through, and in the proud heritage of Olibondeka's new manager he's no stranger to rough tackles. This will be his last World Cup campaign, and he intends to make it a memorable one.

#14 - RM - Gaitzka Ogara - Age 22 - Astograth University - 5 caps
Certainly a gamble, but Urrustoy has an eye for young talent and few are prepared to question his judgement. Especially not when it comes to one of the First Division's most exciting young players, Astograth University's unassuming Gaitzka Ogara. Fast and skilled when dribbling and shooting, he doesn't often think things through, but his inclusion is far more about the drive and unpredictability that Urrustoy needs when going forward.

#8 - AM - Eriz Bakaikoa - Age 31 - Image FC Axel Heiburg – 67 caps, 10 goals
Brought up at the prestigious Haapa-Mechelin academy in Polar Islandstates, Bakaikoa is followed by the Astograthian public at a distance but has quickly become one of the most lauded foreign-based players of all time, winning the Divisjon One multiple times and a number of international trophies including the Champions' Cup, the Cygnus Cup and the Copa de Campeones. He has the weight of a nation on his shoulders and has struggled to live up to expectations; Urrustoy's decreased emphasis on him as the team's fulcrum has allowed him greater freedom of movement and play along the front.

#10 - CF - Ibai Kiriano - Age 23 - Ituraitz FC - 38 caps, 18 goals
One of Handel's few successes, Kiriano has exploded onto the international scene, winning over the hearts and minds of the Astograthian public. Short, barrel-chested and not very smart, but very fast, very skilled in the dribble and extremely deadly. Already a regular on the starting lineup, and more importantly the scoresheet, he is by far the most exciting player on the squad, capable of doing the unexpected and rekindling hope for great things.

#9 - CF - Oskarbi Churin - Age 21 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls - 13 caps, 5 goals
After surprising everybody with prolific showings in the second tier, barely aged 17, Churin repeated his act in the First Division with Athletic Club Rumiatzi and the Polarian league came calling. Fast and physical, his greatest assets are his incredible positioning - expertly beating all but the toughest offside traps - and his unflinching drive once he sets his eyes on goal. One to watch out for.

Substitutes:

#13 - GK – Machin Logegaray - Age 31 - Ituraitz FC – 29 caps, 26 goals against, 11 clean sheets
Despite being relegated to the bench in favour of Galayarde - at least initially - it can't be forgotten that Logegaray was the starting keeper for the most dominant club to ever come out of Astograth - which must've surely made him one of the best in the world in his position. He can be trusted to keep his cool and be a key player for Olibondeka when called upon, but Galayarde's top form holds him back at the moment; a slip-up, though admittedly unlikely, could be his chance for a comeback.

#23 - GK – Zuriko Eliz - Age 25 - Oyardo FC - 2 caps, 2 clean sheets
He isn't a household name by any means, but Zuriko Eliz has carved himself out a little recognition thanks to his performances for the junior national teams and with Ximun Orieta FC, before moving to Oyardo, who continue to surprise in the First Division. With two notable performances in the games he's played, Eliz is one to watch for the future.

#12 - LB – Aitor Bustingorry - Age 30 – Oyardo FC - Uncapped
Bustingorry has made the rounds of the Astograthian league, with several clubs and plenty of experience to his name, but at Oyardo FC he has consolidated himself as a dependable left-back, who isn't expected to set the world on fire at his age but can be relied upon to adequately replace Ziaurriz and bring any desperate situations under control.

#6 - CB - Haitz Maistegi - Age 30 - Astograth University - 37 caps
At club level Maistegi has been instrumental at both Astograth University and Royal Arexa, the latter of which he led to the Cygnus Cup semifinals. At national team level, he has successfully made it as a replacement to retired captain Urtzi Galard, and can be relied to keep things neat at the back; highly talented and roughly equal to Agirrebenia, they can be swapped at any given time.

#16 - CB – Etor Yauregialzo - Age 24 – Ituraitz FC - 11 caps
Raised at the defensively renowned Blue Mountain Range, Yauregialzo stood out enough for Ituraitz FC to lay down the money and bring him over to incorporate into their most dominant squad ever. Smart and quick on his feet, qualities valued by the BMR academy, he is reliable and very eager to show himself to the world.

#19 - RB – Churio Sesma - Age 22 - Gesterlake FC - Uncapped
One of several players that Urrustoy has decided to take his chances with, Sesma has caught the eye of several larger clubs but has remained in his duties in a diligent and fairly low-profile way at Gesterlake. His runs up the wing, especially the off-the-ball movement that allows him to play wonderful one-twos and advance the ball into a very advantageous position, are qualities that may add an interesting variable in case some spice is needed to surprise the opposition.

#22 - LM - Artzeiz Kuartango - Age 22 - East Railway - Uncapped
The very modest East Railways has never had one of its players called up, and neither Kuartango nor his club expected this - which doesn't make any less happy and highlights the great football they have been playing as of late. Though not particularly fast, his talent for the cross sets him apart from Benitzaizin and makes him particularly valuable in matches where a high ball to the strikers is the only way to get it into the net.

#5 - CM – Burutzagi Bidaiyat - Age 28 - Image Edmonton United – 80 caps, 4 goals
Bred at Erathore's Niccostrato, Bidaiyat is a technical-minded midfielder, preferring to dribble and, above all else, pass the ball around like a mindless drone until the opponent makes a grave mistake - as is (or was) the Erathi style. He isn't usually one for getting stuck in the challenge, though being played by Handel as a holding midfielder forced him to become comfortable in the tackle.

#21 - RM - Agozti Ibarran - Age 21 - Athletic Club Olarria - Uncapped
Though devilishly fast - one of the main reasons for his inclusion in the squad - Ibarran is not a great scorer but a great assister, tending to shoot straight at the keeper but capable of taking the ball to the byline and expertly laying it on for someone to smash into the net. Has a lot to learn still, but gaining that sort of experience so he'll be a better player tomorrow is Urrustoy's full intention.

#20 - AM – Luar Dardan - Age 20 - Image Directus – 9 caps, 4 goals
Discarded by Edorta Urrustoy's Urbizania Wanderers in an uncharacteristic bout of short-sightedness, Dardan has set the Euran league on fire with his mazing runs, through-balls and eye for goal. Far more offensive-minded than Bakaikoa and currently reaping all manner of awards as well as a big-money transfer to giants Directus; Urrustoy has recognised his mistake and continues to call him up, meaning to ease him in - though four goals in nine matches, at only twenty, make him an extremely hot prospect.

#18 - CF – Bayarte Pagagartundua - Age 21 - Gortz United – Uncapped
This kid came out of nowhere (or, well, Ximun Orieta FC) to replace Federico Ferreyra at Gortz United and promptly outscored everyone else in the First Division, showing remarkable prowess at scoring in any way possible. In that regard he has been likened to the legendary Dei Ormache - though Ormache never had Pagagartundua's height or physical fitness. He's currently behind Kiriano, Churin and Sagarribay considering the stature of the clubs they play for, but everyone wants to see just what he can do at Olibondeka.

#11 - CF – Zuzen Sagarribay - Age 25 - Image Teva FC – Uncapped
Relatively ignored by the Astograthian media and national team managers, Sagarribay was hastily discarded by Royal Rumiatzi before making his way to the Gordonopian league and one of its best teams - both of which are now among the best in the world. Remarkable in the dribble and in his way of playing in teammates, especially fellow strikers, he has become impossible to leave off the team without explanation.

Bears Armed

‘The Bear-Belles’

National football organisation: ‘Bears Armed Association for Soccer’ (= ‘BAAS’).
(Chairbear: Morra o Barrdenn [Chairbear of Barrdenn Barbariennes S.C.])
National anthem (for sports): ‘The Banner Green And Gold’.
Official supporters' organisation: 'Arri's Furry Army'.

Yes, it still is an all-female team. As I’ve explained before, this is because the main ball-game that's traditionally been played in Bears Armed is actually a form of Rugby, but [for several reasons] the professional league for that sport is all-male and so some of the female players decided that switching to Soccer — and trying to establish a professional league for that sport for themselves instead — might be a viable alternative: They were right, because that professional league was founded shortly after WC44 and so has now been in operation for over an eightSquared of years.

All of the players are actual Ursines (i.e. anthropomorpic, bipedal Bears)], except for any whom I actually specify as being members of other ‘peoples’ instead. The Harr'aynau people are physically human (more-or-less, anyway, although inclined towards heavy builds & hairiness), but are spiritually & culturally Ursine instead.

According to Bears Armed’s timeline, the qualifiers for WC66 take place in 2097-’2098
AD, and the Cup proper in 2099AD: All figures given here for people’s ages and lengths of experience are the values applying in the first of those three years.

Manager & Chief Coach: Darrarlha o GoodSword
(female Ursine, from the Sun Clan; played with the Belles from DBC21 & WC59 through to the final of WC62, primarily as a Lynchpin although she was also capable of substituting into other Defence or Midfield positions, and was their Captain for the latter part of that career; her home team was the Sun Valley Smashers, with whom she filled a similar role and where she was also captain for a while; playing experience = 20 years; age = 48 years, managerial experience = 13 years, starting as Deputy Manager just after WC62 and promoted to her current position after WC63; ambidextrous, fur = blonde; a superlative player, and a good tactician. She wore with pride the same number “26” that her aunt Urrthra o GoodSword — who died heroically in the fighting against the ‘Dead Bears Walking’ — bore through several Cups, which has now been retired in honour of Urrthra’s memory.)

Deputy Manager-&-Coach: Syrrae o Wirrenne
(female ursine, from Clan = Herrchaum; experience = 30 years as a player (with Merlchester Rovers, and from Brevity Cup #1 with the Belles as well, mostly as either left Forward or Centre Forward) followed by 4 years as a deputy coach (also at Merlchester Rovers), appointed to this job after WC65; age = 44, left-pawed, fur = ‘platinum-blonde’; seems to have an [almost?] psychic instinct about where the ball and other players will be next.

Deputy Manager (Admin): Harreethe Sareeen
(female Ursine, from Clan GreyBear; formerly a staff member at BAAS, who was appointed as her predecessor’s assistant in preparation for the ‘qualifiers’ stage of WC63 and then promoted to this position after WC65; her duties include acting as the team’s ‘routemaster’, which means handling all of their travelling arrangements; age = 39, fur = light brown).

Defensive Coach: Lueth’hree Redwood _ Clan = Redwood; playing experience = 30 years; age = 45 years, left-pawed, fur = medium-brown. (She made her international debut in DBC21 and also played in Brevity Cup 2, both of which the Bears won, before the qualifiers for WC60, and then remained in the Belles [primarily as a Left Back] through to the end of WC64; appointed to this job shortly after that. Her home team was River City.)

Attacking Coach: Sarrathrie Sevens
(female ursine, from the Clouded Sun [Free Sept]; experience = 25 years as a player (for mostly for River City, as a versatile Forward), the latter 4 of them doubling as a coach for that club’s ‘youth’ programme, and appointed to this job after WC65; age = 41, ambidextrous, fur = cream; is a incredibly accurate shot, partly because she has very good sight even by human standards, is very accurate agile too. (She actually made her international debut as a member of the Bears’ team for DBC22, although the roster for that squad has never been made widely known, but the qualifiers for WC61 were her first time playing for her country again since then: She’s been verry thoroughly vetted, and seems to have been innocent of any involvement in whatever conspiracy it was that over-rode own BAAS’s plans for that earlier tournament.)

Doctor: Herrath Harrn
(female Brock [i.e. anthropomorphic Badger], from the ‘Brocken Brackh’ nation; age = 36, right-pawed, fur = black & white; hired just before the start of WC65’s qualifiers.)

Physiotherapist: Erra Karrach
(female Ursine, Clan = Kettar-Surra; age = 32, left-pawed, fur = medium-brown & quite short; hired after WC63.)

Chaplain, ‘One Plus Seven’: Urrsulha Nightfall
(female Ursine from the Silver-of-Night; age = mid-50s (?), left-pawed, fur = silvery; assigned to this job, by the Great Medicine Society, just before the qualifiers for WC57.)

Chaplain, Ursion: Ursiosopher Dorr-Surra
(male Ursine, from Clan Redwood; age = 47; left-pawed, fur = medium-brown with traces of chestnut; formerly a deputy chaplain at Bullford University, transferred to this post in preparation for the ‘qualifiers’ stage of WC63 after his predecessor here was appointed to a senior administrative job at the main temple in New Sarrum instead; he has a doctorate in Anthropology, and is a skilled organist who originally was really more interested in [Baroque] music than he was in sports but has developed an interest in football while in this job.)

Security Chief: Commander Halgrimm Harrlh’s-son
(male Ursine, from Clan Thulean; age =44, left-pawed, fur = light brown; seconded from the Confederal Navy, and has considerable experience of dealing with foreigners; appointed to this job in preparation for the ‘qualifiers’ stage of WC63.)

Caterers: Famhwuie Girronty.

Roster

(List of players follows shortly)

___________________________________________________________________________

Style: Offensive, modifier = +4.0… ("A good offence is the best defence"...)
Their usual formation will include a front row of at least 5 (normally arranged as 3 strikers & 2 wingers), with 2 midfielders, 2 backs, and either a ‘Defensive Centre’ (whose starting position would be at the midpoint of an imaginary cross drawn between those other four non-forwards’ positions) or a third midfielder depending on the Manager’s decision before each match.

RP injuries to my players / Godmod injuries to my players / Hand out Yellow cards to my players / Hand out Red cards to my players: Y to all, at least to start with, but remember what I've written here and keep it in limits accordingly... Any serious offences by my players would probably result in injuries to your players, and causing any serious injuries to my players would probably require such obviously-deliberate attacks that your players would get yellow or even red cards as a result too. Don’t kill anybody, or inflict injuries that would be serious enough to end careers, without checking with me & getting my approval (which is unlikely to be granted…) first.
Godmod Other Events: Y, I suppose, at least as long as you do so in an AMUSING way... but please remember that Ursines are fully sapient beings, as much as Humans are, not instinct-driven animals. Oh, and of course female Ursines are not sexually interested in Humans (of either sex), and it's very unlikely that female Harr'ayanau would be either. Please don't have them run amok or outright revert to animality, without checking by TG first, don't make assumptions about their views on politics or religion, and don't do anything that would make more than one of them incapable of playing in their next game...

Kit: This incarnation of the team will normally wear the usual set of designs (from ‘ediraf’) that the Belles have favoured in the past, with the ‘Association’ badges correctly staying ‘BAAS’ rather than [the now obsolete] ‘BAMAS’. See "here" for details. However, unlike the incarnations of this team that you’ve actually seen playing before, they have a set of five stars—one for each World Cup triumph (in their own timeline, and all after WC62…) that the Belles had “already” achieved before the match from which they were brought here.
Bears Armed has traditionally used base-8 arithmetic, for several reasons, and this has affected the set of numbers used for this team’s players: The numbers “10”, “22”, and “26” have been left unassigned out of respect for wearers who went to their deaths as heroines during various conflicts.

Home grounds

1/. Wimbley Stadium:[/b] Located a few miles to the north-north-west of Council Groves (our capital city), to which it is connected by rail as well as by road, this stadium was built from scratch — on part of a former Confederal Army base’s site — shortly before the qualifiers for WC52 began as a replacement for the Bear-Belles original “home” at ‘Plumtrees Park’ which has now been demolished. Its current capacity is approximately 60'000 for Ursines: Fitting about 40’000 humans into the visiting fans' half should be possible, and so that's as many as we'll let into the country. Accommodation for visiting teams & their staffs will be provided in a new hotel, less than a mile away, which has staff who are accustomed to dealing with Humans as well as with Ursines. The various other hotels in that complex and those at Council Groves can now provide about 12’000 rooms at a time, at varying prices, although of course some of those may already have been booked by people who have nothing to do with the Cup. Accommodation (at a fairly basic level) for up to 15’000 supporters will be available, at reasonable prices, in students' residences for the National University’s campus in that city: if any more than all of those facilities put together can house want to attend a match then they’ll have to borrow space in the area’s remaining Army camp instead...
There are still no direct inter-regional flights into Council Groves, so that visitors will have to travel by way of one of our neighbours and then continue onwards by one of the limited number of "local" air-flights or by rail. (People planning to arrive by rail will still have to travel via the nation of Mikitivity, but extra services will be organised on that route...)
This site will be used for most, but not all, of the Belles' matches. (list to be added)

2./ ‘NorthLands National Stadium’: Located at NorthPort, the most cosmopolitan city in The Ursine Northlands, this facility was originally built for use by the 'Northbears' WC49’s qualifiers. Unfortunately the place has since seen rather less use than was originally hoped, but it is still in good condition and will hold about 43’000 Ursines or over 60’000 humans (or, of course, proportionate numbers of a mixture of those two species) because it was deliberately built to be rather larger than 'Plumtrees Park' which was then the Mainland's 'national' stadium…
This site will be used for some of the Belles’ home games (list to be added), and also for some of their friendlies & matches in other Cups during this period as specified separately.
Foreigners coming to this stadium may either travel to the ‘Mainland’ and then continue hence via a set of ancient [& probably magical] ‘Gates’ that link the country’s two sections — completing their journey by either rail or riverboat after that — or take ship directly to NorthPort.

NOTES

Ursines may tend to be a bit less agile & slower to accelerate than humans on average, but this team's members were carefully selected so the gap between them & their opponents in this respect should be narrower than some people might expect. They do tend to have [slightly] poorer eyesight than humans, on the whole (although the members of both Clan Gunnar and the Sun Clan are generally an exception to this rule, and the eyesight of the latter group is actually often at [slightly] better-than-human levels instead), so long-distance passes & shots at goal will tend to be rarer behaviour for them than they are for human teams... but their typical size & strength mean that when they're running with the ball it will probably take a very brave human — as well as a very skilled one — to tackle them successfully (or, at least, one who has reasonable experience of playing against Ursines…), which should balance that factor pretty well. They don’t jump very well, but then they’re generally rather taller than most Human players to start with so they shouldn’t need to jump as often in order to intercept [relatively] high shots...
Ursines are physically robust, of course, which means that they're much less likely than humans are to suffer injuries in falls or collisions. The females of this species are more even-tempered than the males, and the team's members will try to stay on their best behaviour not only in order to do well in this contest but also to impress upon the watching humans that Ursines aren't just "dumb beasts". They will not 'dive', or feign injury in other ways, because suggesting that they could be harmed so easily goes strongly against the grain. ‘Northlanders’ are maybe not quite as "civilised" as the 'Mainlanders'… or, at any rate, that’s the traditional stereotype..
Cold weather should pose no problem to them, even if there's snow or ice on the pitch, but tropical heat might prove awkward...

Unless our hosts at the match in question object, this team's members (including the designated substitutes for the match in question) will perform a [fairly short] ritual that's called the 'harrdiharr' on the pitch just before play begins... This is a traditional war-dance, meant to over-awe opponents, that has come to be a customary prelude for team games as well (similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' 'haka'...). : )
As has now been seen during various tournaments, some of our fans like to take drums — and possibly also 'Urrs-horns' [which are similar to Alpenhorns, cow-horns, or other "musical instruments", too — along to the matches…

The team is accompanied by a number of sapient Ravens, who are there both to gather information about the rival sides and to provide air cover in case of hostile waterfowl.
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

Kinitaria National Football Team
For the 66th World Cup Qualifiers
Image

The impatient Kinitar Football Federation have demanded qualification at the very least as their objective for this World Cup. They're determined for Kinitaria to make themselves into a force in the world game instead of failing at the last hurdle every time.

Manager: Melody Pond (age 36)
Melody Pond guided her Jeru FC team to a World Cup qualification, but has been unable to repeat the feat with Kinitaria. However, a very successful Cup of Harmony campaign, in which Kinitaria reached the semi-finals, has helped win over some of the doubters.
Pond favours attacking play, and is very much in tune with the physical side of the game, a management style which Kinitar fans will be sure to take to. She's known to prefer a laidback, hands-off approach to management which could go either way with regards to some of the egos in the Kinitaria side. Her task is not helped by the retirement of several key players from the squad through age.

Players
After being widely criticised for experimenting with her team's formations in crucial games, it looks like a standard 4-4-2 for Melody. But she's lost some crucial players ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, age forcing some former stars to retire from international football.

1. Jaren Kozak - GK - age 35 - Mi'ato - 4 caps - 0 goals
After being frozen out of the side for so long due to Costin Petran's stranglehold on the no. 1 shirt, the time has come for Kozak to prove his worth in the national team. He's impressed at club level, and that's made him the first-choice keeper for the time being following Petran's retirement. He might not last long himself, though, due to age.

2. Karl Sala - LB - age 34 - Mi'ato - 141 caps - 2 goals
Sala has been an established member of the team right from their first game. An old-fashioned sort of left-back, he aims to make life hard for oncoming attackers, and will always stand his ground, although he's now not as fast as he once was. He has been known to put in some harsh tackles, and this is shown by his disciplinary record, since he's been sent off eight times in his national career.

3. Doran Lupei - CB - age 34 - Litora United - 146 caps - 6 goals (Captain)
The loyal, talented defender is great at marking, sticking closely to his man and breaking up attacks through the middle. He's proven himself to be the anchor of a Kinitar back line which has often been criticised for being fragile, and his performance will likely be crucial if the defence are to stick together and work as a unit. He's earned the captain's armband for both club and country through his loyalty, sticking with Litora United at a time when the club was going into meltdown.

4. Sebastien Sykora - CB - age 35 - AFC Damaciu - 137 caps - 3 goals
Maybe not the most technically gifted of defenders, Sykora has nevertheless established himself as a regular in the national side. He's no stranger to the occasional error, having cost Kinitaria crucial goals on at several occasions in his career, and was part of the Damaciu side which slipped down the league in the latter half of last season. Despite this, he is versatile and can drift into new positions as needed, and he has also been known to notch a few goals himself, mainly headed efforts from corners.

5. Anton Spirlea - RB - age 33 - Mi'ato City - 148 caps - 1 goal
Rounding off the veteran defence is an accomplished team player who is well capable of performing under pressure. Spirlea is known for his excellent distribution of the ball, able to pick out a team-mate and start a counter attack with ease. He never panics when pressed and prefers to play his way out of trouble rather than hoofing the ball upfield. It's very rare to see him make a mistake and if he does have a flaw, it would be that he tends to let his complacency get the better of him.

6. Sergiu Vacarestič - LW - age 32 - Avnani Athletic - 137 caps - 29 goals
Vacarestič is now one of the first names on the teamsheet, despite a shaky start to his Kinitaria career. He is an attacking-minded winger who slots perfectly into Kinitaria's formation, and he's just as likely to cut inside and have a go at goal as well as sending in a cross from the left - preferring to cross early and attempt to beat the offside trap.

7. Samuel Costica - CM - age 29 - Inovita - 52 caps - 7 goals
He's made a strong and consistent impact on the national team since being brought through from the youths in the 62 qualifiers, and now he's been rewarded for years of good service with a spot in the first team and the number seven shirt. Expect him to try to use his pace to beat his marker before spreading the ball out wide to launch an attack. Distribution is definitely one of his strong points.

8. Malen Elkinič - CM - age 23 - Mi'ato - 8 caps - 1 goal
Elkinič broke through into the Mi'ato team recently, providing a spark of life during the team's dismal 3477 season. A product of their youth academy, pace is his strong point, which is something Kinitaria have been lacking in recent years. He's one of the younger players being handed a shining opportunity by the retirement of many of the team's older members.

9. Milan Beskid - CF - age 31 - Universita Tirinthea - 60 caps - 30 goals
The talented striker can finish like no other and functions best with a strike partner to spur him on to greater heights. He's not one for spectacular goals, instead, he's a consistent threat to opposition defences if he gets so much as a sight of goal within the penalty area. He's been handed the number nine shirt for the upcoming campaign, now it's down to him to prove that he deserves to keep it.

10. Navra Kulisev - CF - age 23 - Mi'ato - 5 caps - 0 goals
Pond will have looked at her ageing squad and decided that she needs to plan for the future. That's certainly what she's doing in the form of Kulisev, who is one of the young talents of Kinitaria's Premier Division, and burst onto the scene with three-time champions Mi'ato in recent times. Now, he's been handed the number 10 shirt of Luka Sabčot, which will certainly give him some huge boots to fill.

11. Zenel Halil - RW - age 29 - Mi'ato City - 19 caps - 1 goal
The tricky winger burst into the national consciousness following a run of form - and quite a few goals - in Mi'ato City's title-winning season. Now, after being drafted into the national side, he will be looking for opportunities to make his mark at a higher level. Most observers agree that Halil has a successful career ahead of them, but it remains to be seen if he can live up to the hype.

12. Semil Alčer - GK - age 27 - Universita Tirinthea - 0 caps - 0 goals
Alčer has been brought into the squad to act as an understudy to the new number one, Jaren Kozak. Tirinthea have a tradition of producing some fine goalkeepers, although it is unlikely that Alčer will get a significant run in the first team unless circumstances mandate a change of goalkeeper.

13. David Topol - CB - age 26 - Mi'ato - 13 caps - 0 goals
Following an impressive breakthrough in the Premier Division, Topol has earned his place in the national team. He's not the tallest of players, but he makes up for it in determination and technical ability. He's remarkably calm under pressure, and is one for the big games - he'll be desperate to convince Pond to give him a chance to prove himself.

14. Zemir Pavlov - RM - age 21 - AFC Damaciu - 0 caps - 0 goals
Little is known about Pavlov outside of Damaciu, and indeed some have criticised Pond for going with youth ahead of experience in some of her selections for the squad. But he certainly brings plenty of enthusiasm as well as a bit of pace, and is certain to always give 100% every game. That said, he's still very fresh and not used to the rigours of the high-level game.

15. Himo Kazran - CM - age 22 - FC Serenberg - 5 caps - 0 goals
Kazran has impressed for his team, and is currently being chased by some of Kinitaria's top clubs. They obviously rate him highly, and Melody Pond agrees, having drafted him into the national team at short notice following the retirement of Cyril Novak from international play. A strong and bulky midfielder, but often a careless one, he needs some work to hone him into a proper national team player yet.

16. Marko Kuzinov - RB - age 32 - Universita Tirinthea - 6 caps - 0 goals
Uncapped until recently, but he's certainly impressed Pond since, and she will be looking to Kuzinov as a pillar in defense, something which Kinitaria's notoriously leaky back line has lacked in recent years. He's an old-fashioned sort of defender who fits in very well with the traditional Kinitar style of play, and he has the disciplinary record to prove it.

17. Virne Limcič - FW - age 24 - Atletika Vanuku - 0 caps - 0 goals
Having suddenly came to the nation's collective attention through a fantastic spell for his club, Atletika Vanuku, Limcič has been rewarded with a spell in the national team, and will almost certainly be given a chance to show what he can do in the qualifiers. Now, it's down to him to make sure that he doesn't become a one-season wonder.

18. Ciprian Marin - CB - age 31 - East Franz Athletic (PIS) - 62 caps - 7 goals
Another former youth team player who has significantly impressed fans and manager alike since being given a chance in the 62 qualifiers. He stands up to onrushing attackers and uses his strength to win the ball. He has a tendency to dive into rash challenges and still has a lot to learn before becoming an established squad player.

19. Birka Sulemcev - LB - age 26 - AFC Damaciu - 1 cap - 0 goals
The tradition of the Kinitar game is for hard, physical play, and that's definitely what Melody Pond was looking for when she called Sulemcev up to the national side. A real tough left-back, he's known as a dogfighter back at his club for his persistance and constant physical presence in all areas of the game. He's hard but fair in the tackle - unless he gets carried away.

20. Leon Cantacuzino - LM - age 35 - Litora United - 74 caps - 19 goals
Once a superb squad player, Cantacuzino has faded somewhat in recent years. When he plays, he'll be the team's corner taker, since he can swing in a good ball from either the left or the right. He prefers to stay wide, use the flanks and cross from the byline, and he can do this very effectively to slice open an opposing defence. Still Kinitaria's super-sub, in a way. He can change the direction of a game almost single-handedly, but is getting old now.

21. Erekor Finalev - CM - age 20 - Mi'ato City - 0 caps - 0 goals
The youngest member of Pond's squad, Finalev has been included more as a chance for one of Kinitaria's finest young players to gain experience, than as a world-class player who'll dazzle the world. Unlikely to play many games during qualification, if he even features at all.

22. Dalča Nurmanov - FW - age 33 - Fryi Frêndê (FFD) - 33 caps - 8 goals
After being frozen out of the squad for some time, a range of impressive games in the Premier Division brought him back to the squad and secured a big-money move to Farfadillis. He's put in a good claim for a first-team place in some previous matches, and with a run of form in the qualifiers, he could be well on his way to an established squad place.

23. Doriel Azinovič - GK - age 32 - AFC Damaciu - 0 caps - 0 goals
There's no denying that Azinovič is a capable keeper, but... what does a third-choice keeper actually do? I think they're just there to take up space. Moving swiftly on...

Kinitar fans burning flares in a Cup of Harmony game

Kinitar fans are known for their passion. They're also known for burning down a significant portion of the Tricorn Arena in Wight during the Cup of Harmony 53, although the FFK has naturally disavowed all responsibility, and supporters' groups maintain that the shoddy construction of the host stadium was to blame. Either way, lighting flares is a part of fan culture in Kinitaria, and there's always the possibility that a Kinitaria goal will turn the air thick with smoke. During the match, the team are typically roared on by 70,000 home fans screaming themselves hoarse non-stop throughout the game, which creates an intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams - although the fact that the aforementioned flares, among other things, are sometimes thrown at visiting players or fans might also contribute to this. The fights which characterise some of the most fierce club matches, such as the cross-capital derby between hated rivals Mi'ato City and Mi'ato, have yet to make their way to international level, although some say that this is merely because they haven't found the right spark yet. The FFK has been somewhat reluctant to take action against such matters, because "it's all part of the game, isn't it?"

Stadium

Central Stadium, Mi'ato
Capacity 76,000

A purpose-built modern stadium in the centre of Kinitaria's capital, Mi'ato. The Central Stadium hosts all of Kinitaria's home matches. Visiting teams should note that a maximum of 6,000 tickets are made available to away supporters, with seats located in a segregated area in the top of the upper bowl. This is a prime location to throw things at the home fans, however, it's also a prime location to have things thrown back.

The Archregimancy WC66 Roster

First of all, everyone except newbies knows that the Archregimancy is a nation of Eastern Orthodox Christian monks from an alternate reality, right?

Embracing the surge in the rankings brought about by the Archregimancy's squad of ascetic monks in WCs 62-64, the Monastic Football Association is fielding a squad of hard-bitten no-nonsense monks in WC66 in the hope that this will take the squad on to the next level. It's a radical new take no prisoners (either in football or theology) approach designed to show a tough new less forgiving side to the team.

The names of the players probably need little elaboration

Goal:
Fr. Eustathius the Ruthless

Defence:
Fr. Agapius the Unforgiving
Fr. Theopistus the Vengeful
Fr. Michael the Merciless [Cap]
Fr. Theodore the Severe

Midfield:
Fr. Oleg the Hard
Fr. Hilarion the Severe
Fr. Quadratus the Cold
Fr. Demetrius the Unrelenting

Forwards:
Fr. Daniel the Remorseless
Fr. Hypatius the Fierce

Manager/coach:
Fr. Isaac the Forbidding

Formation:
The Archregimancy always plays an orthodox 4-4-2; style modifier +0.

Kit:

See Fr. Seraphim the Occasionally Dangerously Free Thinking Theologian model the Archregimancy's monastic robes!

Image

Note that Fr. Hilarion will, however, never wear more than a loincloth unless required to do so by local laws when playing away from home. Fr. Mark the Goastskin Wearer has been prevailed upon to die his goatskins black so as to minimise confusion - though not to remove the heads.

Team Icon

The team is always accompanied to matches by the Holy Icon of the Mother of God, Bringer of Victory, which is paraded before the team before the match. The Holy Icon looks like:

Tips for footballing visitors to the Archregimancy:

1) Each home match is preceded by the complete Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. Rest assured that this should only require visiting teams, fans, and officials to stand for a mere 2 hours before kickoff. Consider yourselves lucky we don't use the Liturgy of St. Basil. This isn't required or expected at away matches (though it's always hugely appreciated when a host Association/Federation does do so).

2) We control the nature of reality in the Dreamed Realm. This isn't used to cheat - all normal rules of football are strenuously followed - but it does have two major side effects:
A) Any injuries to either team in Archregimancy home matches are immediately healed.
B) No violent or riotous behaviour by visiting fans will be tolerated. Any such behaviour will find those responsible immediately transported back to ordinary physical reality.

3) Direct travel from ordinary physical reality to the Dreamed Realm is impossible. Some 72 hours before your away qualifier in the Archregimancy, a team of monks shall arrive in your home stadium and construct a portal to the Dreamed Realm. You may then use this to travel to the Archregimancy at your leisure.

4) Visiting support is limited to a maximum of 2000 fans (which is twice the number allowed in last Cup).

5) Women are not usually permitted into the Archregimancy. Exceptions will be made for visiting players and properly accredited officials - largely because we have to.

6) Formerly, the Archregimancy made a point of being resentful of being forced to permit atheists, communists, freemasons, assorted heretics and foul excelites into the Archregimancy for home qualifiers. These days the Monastic Football Association tries a little harder to welcome all of the above – though largely in the hope that they might just possibly be open to conversion through a slightly more conciliatory approach.

HOME GROUND

In recognition of the changed nature of the national football team, this cup the Archregimancy will be playing its home matches in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments in the Monastic Republic, the Znamesky Monastery of the vast arboreal taiga.

Image

This particular photograph shows the home dressing room and chapel that forms part of the ground's West Stand (the opposite East Stand is much larger, and is where visitors will be seated); it was also taken on one of the three to four weeks a year when "summer" has temporarily melted the snow (though not necessarily the permafrost). The local monastic community can be expected to also be particularly unwelcoming and hostile during the match - though they can also be relied upon to be polite and hospitable to visitors outside of the 90 minutes of the actual match.

And it will be cold.

And I mean really, really cold.

And remember... Monks don't cheat. Please.

OOC: I realise my team might present a role-playing challenge. Rest assured that once they start playing they'll play just like any other team (though they might be a bit more inclined to pray after scoring), so I have no problem with you treating the team like any other if you don't want to deal with the Orthodox Christian element.

THE HOLY EMPIRE WC 66 SQUAD

While the nation took a long break between WCs 7 and 25, the Holy Empire is proud to be one of the only active nations to have participated in WC1.

GK:
The Doctor: A mysterious and somewhat irascible figure who appears to be a frail old man, but with a surprisingly ruthless streak when it comes to stopping opposing goal-scoring opportunities.

DEF:
The Doctor: Impish, mercurial, clever, and a little scruffy; curiously prone to playing along to the Imperial Hymn on his recorder during the pre-match national anthems.

The Doctor: Dapper and patrician grey-haired authoritative central defender;takes a somewhat scientific approach to the art of defence.

The Doctor: Unpredictable and sometimes brooding; while he can be warm and friendly, he combines a surprisingly dark edge with a strong moral code. Overly fond of a long scarf that he'll only remove if the referee point-blank insists.

MID:
The Doctor: Appears to be one of the youngest members of the squad; something of a more reactive player. Inexplicably wears a stick of celery by his collar, and rumoured to prefer cricket to football.

The Doctor: Confident - perhaps overly so - and prone to mood swings; most likely to concede a crucial free kick by an unexpectedly violent attack on an opposing player.

The Doctor: Outwardly somewhat bumbling, he's actually a sly manipulator of central midfield that the opposition underestimate at their peril.

The Doctor: Always ready to seize opportunities and enthusiastically encourage the side onwards; something of the team cheerleader, though he perhaps hasn't been given enough time to fully explore his role.

The Doctor: A confrontational winger who's often remorseful about his past actions on the field of play, especially when they seem to be out of character.

FOR:
The Doctor: Light-hearted, even cheeky, youthful forward who can be surprisingly ruthless when presented with a goal-scoring opportunity. Prone to encouraging the team forward with a cry of "allons-y!"

The Doctor: Another apparently young player who combines enthusiasm with a subtle and manipulative approach to football; more of a playmaker to his fellow-forward Doctor's poacher.

The Doctors take it in turns to act as captain; otherwise they'd spend too much time bickering over the role.

Coaches:

The team coach remains World Cup Hall of Fame legend Juan Tzimisces.

The assistant coach is Starblaydi World Cup Hall of Fame legend Simeone Di Bradini.

The Holy Empire always registers the coaches as players, just in case.

Kit
The squad will wear the famous Imperial Gold and Red, as worn by the Holy Empire since WC1 (home left, change/away right)

Image

Ground
Home matches take place in the jewel-encrusted and gold and platinum-domed Imperial Hippodrome.

Style Modifiers / formation
Frosty football is attacking football. The Holy Empire always plays a 3-5-2 formation using overlapping wingers that turns into 3-3-4 on the counterattack.

OOC'ly, the team uses the maximum attacking style modifier permitted by each cup's hosts.

RP instructions:
Except as described below, knock yourselves out - creative RP is encouraged; especially creative RP that engages with the Doctor(s). If you haven't worked out who the Doctor is by now, you should probably just ignore that side of things.

Please remember that the basic rules for travel to the Archregimancy [see above] also apply to the Holy Empire - you'll need someone to build a portal for you, you can't just fly/walk/drive there. If you want to deal with the malleable reality and non-linear time elements of the Dreamed Realm, and have no prior experience of these, it's probably best to check with me first.

Only I can decide if and when I might choose to field the coaches as players; please don't do this unilaterally.

¡Viva la Revolución!

Sort of. Following a disappointingly middling campaign last time out the services of Éibhear Mac Dónaill and replaced him with the young, daring, stylish, and dashing Rory Dunne. The 33 year old Dunne comes from Sorthern Rovers having guided them to a freescoring title last season. Gone is Ancharmunn's traditional normality of a 4-4-2 for an all out frenzy of a slightly audacious 4-2-4. Ooooh the excitement! Rory Dunne's barmy army!

Gone are the majority of the old guard, whilst in come a number of fresh young players, notably a contingent from H.Ó.C.P. And Kumquat Orchard, traditionally smaller clubs but ones that both played in UICA competition last season. Whilst all the squad can be relied upon to put in an honest shift, the truth is that Dariusz Kaczka is the only player of true quality. Much will rely upon him, yet still the Charmunnry public find it difficult to take to the second-generation Mytanar.

Kjeligsted: The 'Nation'

The Isle of Kjeligsted is a tiny, tiny island to the north of Audioslavia. It is famous for being rather rich, if a little stringent when it comes to lawmaking - the country recently outlawed alcohol, for example, with tobacco rumored to be on the way out as well. Football in Kjeligsted is, like Audioslavia, mostly amateur, but the game lags well behind Tennis, Cricket and Motor-racing on the rather wealthy island. As such, not much is ever expected of the team on the rare occasion they enter the AOCAF Cup.

Kjeligsted's entry into World Cup 66 was the result of a publicity campaign on the island, demanding the nation enter a team into qualifying, especially as one of the stadiums to be used in the finals, the 1927 Arena, is situated on the island. A petition to get the national team automatic entry into the finals tournament was, of course, laughed out of the offices of the WCC.
Style Modifier: -5
Hello! If you are reading this then my tiny island of Kjeligsted has wandered off again. Please put it back in its box. It won't bite.

Sincerely,

Audioslavia.

World Cup 66

Sargossa - 'The Corsairs'

Kit

Home / Away / Keeper
ImageImageImage

Coach

Iarlaith Mag Aonghusa (Sorthern Northland)
Much travelled tactician who coached his homeland to back-to-back World Cup titles. Followed that triumph with successful stints in Saugeais and Taeshan before leading Sargossa to a Copa Rushmori trophy.

Assistant Coaches

Principal coaching staff remain, providing much needed continuity. Meaning Hernán Ojeda holds on to an assistant coach slot while Israel Navarro continues to work with the goalkeepers and Javier Valentín oversees the fitness work.

Talent

GK: 1. Ezequiel Medrán (28) – Sporting San Marquez
Picked out by Tejera, who knows a thing or two about goalkeeping, as one to watch during his tenure in charge at the Estadio Silva. Now first choice for a Sporting side that finished as Liga de Fuego runner’s up.
GK: 13. Armando Abad (23) – Dínamo Maturín
Such is the bend on this lad that there is a growing suspicion that young Armando may actually be partial elastic.
GK: 25. Silvio Romero (31) – Sportivo Cordova
Mr reliable at the back for Sportivo. He’s not showy, he’s not spectacular but everything Silvio does tends to be right.

DR: 2. Cristiano Damían (21) – Astograth University (Astograth)
An eyebrow or two were raised when Astograth University snapped up a little known youngster from Ciudad Soluca. But judging by his performances at the Olympics the ‘Grathi’s have got themselves a bargain.
DRC: 5. Leandro Gonzàlez (32) - El Nacional
Former captain of the Under-21 side who has become an integral member of the senior squad. Became the youngest El Nacional captain in their history.
DLC: 6. Mauro Fernández (30) – Ciudad Soluca
Soluca giants Ciudad may not have had their finest season on record but one thing that did stand out was their defensive solidity. And key to that was the form of this rugged centreback.
DL: 3. Lautaro Formica (31) – Sporting San Marquez
The second son of Marquezian immigrants who couples sound defensive instincts with a wand of a left foot. Often presents a serious goal threat from setpieces. As well as a threat to rows G – N.
DC: 12. Matías Sosa (26) – Liria Prizren (Mytannion)
A free scoring centreback whose temperament has been known to get him in a spot of bother. So he’ll probably feel right at home in Mytannion.
DRC: 14. Guillermo Lucena (20) – Ciudad Soluca
A versatile defender who took full advantage of a minor injury crisis to win and then keep a place in the Ciudad first team squad. Equally adept in the centre and on the right of defence.
DLC: 19. José Toranzo (25) – Perntav Marna TU (Earent)
Can play at both left fallback and in the centre of defence, looking equally accomplished in both positions. Not so recently set out for a new challenge in Earent.
DC: 21: Orlondo Camarena (19) - El Nacional
A highly rated young defender who the coaches in Goza rate very highly. Probably why he’s rated so highly. Gaining valuable experience as part of the squad but not likely to see a huge amount of game time.

DMC: 4. Lucas Ramís (30) – Sporting San Marquez
Key member of a Sporting side looking to re-establish themselves in the Liga de Fuego.
AMR: 7. Javier Jerez (27) – Sporting San Marquez
A diminutive winger with plenty of technique but a willowy frame that struggles to compete with the game’s more physical practitioners.
MC: 8. Rodrigo Defederico (28) – Oyardo FC (Astograth)
Was the most highly prised transfer target of the close season and object of desire for all the nation’s big clubs. But the playmaker turned down the likes of Sporting San Marquez and Ciudad Soluca to make the move to Astograth.
AML: 11. Alejandro Echeverría (34) - Ciudad Soluca
Definitely in the veteran stakes but still able to show that touch of magic to change the course of a match.
AMRC: 15. Rodrigo Hoyos (30) – Sporting San Marquez
‘Hot Rod’ spends a little too much time making headlines for his off field antics for most coaches liking but you can’t argue that the boy has talent. Another key member of Sporting’s strong season.
MLC: 16. Kike Galán (29) – Sporting San Marquez
Miniature midfield dynamo whose influence in the centre often belies his diminutive stature.
AML: 18. Sebastián Canteros (27) - Perntav Marna TU (Earent)
Started life as a striker before the youth coaches at the Ciudad Deportiva decided that such crossing ability was wasted in the centre. Has joined Toranzo in Earent.
DMC: 22. Matías Escobar (26) – Marinos Metropolis (Valladares)
A midfield destroyer who can run all day without breaking a sweat. Consistently good performances in the Liga De Fuego led to a move abroad.
AMLC: 24. Ivan Ávila (26) – Ciudad Soluca
An understudy for Sargossan international Alejandro Echeverría at the Estadio Generalissmo Joaquín Delgado who is starting to show why he’s regarded do highly at his club.

FLC: 9. Gelson Di Santo (26) – Sportivo Soluca
A real find from the Ciudad Soluca academy who was used sparring for both club and country but tends to rise to the opportunity when given it. But he grew tired of being used so sparingly and has since made a controversial move across the capital.
FC: 17. Mariano Estrada (29) – Sporting San Marquez
A familiar figure towards the top of the Liga de Fuego scoring charts. Was seen as something of an untouchable in the squad but the emergence of Ferreyra has changed that.
FC: 17. Federico Ferreyra (27) – Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth)
A penalty area predator who made his name for little Nuevo Onwere before making the move to Astograth. Recently swapped the purple of Gortz Utd for the altogether greener, quite literally, pastures of Urbizania Wanderers.
FRC: 20. Saturnín Quinteros (20) – Ciudad Soluca
Big things are expected of a forward who caught the attention with a seventy four goal season for one of Ciudad’s many youth teams. Since then Quinteros’ development has consisted of two productive seasons on loan in the lower leagues and occasional goal scoring cameos off the bench for Ciudad.
FC: 23. Agustín Caruzzo (30) – Dwile Warriors (Apox)
Top scorer at the Bonilla Arena as Alianza Jucaro squeezed into the Globe Cup qualification places. Has since moved to Apox.

Style
A short passing 4-2-3-1. Probable starting eleven (Listed L to R)
Medrán -- Formica - Sosa - Gonzàlez - Damían -- Escobar - Ramís - - Ávila - Defederico (C) - Hoyos -- Ferreyra

Style Modifier = (+1)

Schedule

Big matches are hosted in our rather fancy Nethertopian built 109,000 capacity Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado in the Sargossan capital of Soluca.

Manager: Currently vacant. Applicants should TG Audioslavia[/pre]

Style Modifier: -1

Audioslavia is an ancient nation, recently having celebrated the 10th OOC anniversary of its inception. The nation originally CTE'd in 2006, was revived briefly in 2007 and 2009, and enjoyed a proper resurgence at the start of 2012, locating itself in Atlantian Oceania indefinitely after IC centuries of rivalries with various nations in the region.

The Audioslavia national side participated in World Cups 4 to 29, made an abortive comeback in World Cup 37, and rejoined the world of international football properly back in World Cup 59. The ancient Audioslavia side qualified for all but one of the World Cups it entered (a young Audioslavia failed during the WC5 qualifying playoffs) and generally maintained a place in top twenty of the world rankings, peaking at #1 during the qualifying phases of World Cups 20 and 21.

Paradoxically, the national team has seen more success in its modern form - a period where quick success is much more difficult to achieve than in the early days. Whereas those early years yielded only the inaugural U21 World Cup and a string of losing finals in the World Cup proper, the modern team won the Baptism of Fire tournament before WC59 and triumphed in the thirty-fifth, thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth installments of the AOCAF Cup. The side have also reached the final of the AOCAF cup on three other occasions, and have reached as far as the semi-finals of the Cup of Harmony.

Modern Audioslavia finally won the World Cup itself in cycle 63, a victory that required a huge amount of luck and some very po-faced, negative football. Audioslavia managed to win the tournament despite going into the qualifiers with a ranking of #53 in the world. Four years later, in World Cup 64, the national side proved that this win, as fortunate as it was, was no flash in the pan when they again took home the World Cup trophy, completing the first ever 'double-double' of winning back-to-back AOCAF and World Cup championships.

Ten Things Audioslavia's football team are famous for:
1: The claret and green striped kits, complete with white pinstripe. They have been like this, with the odd exception, since World Cup 4.
2: Jeremy Jaffacake. The indescribable Jaffacake has been a satellite of the national team - both as sports journalist and member of the FFA - since World Cup 6. It is unwise to cross Jeremy Jaffacake. In fact, it's often unwise to even look at him. Jaffacake is arguably the most infamous character in the entirety of sports RPing. He's certainly the oldest.
3:Choking in major finals. Audioslavia were the record holders for losing the most amount of World Cup finals without a victory, having failed in WCs 12, 19, 20 and 29. When you include modern Audioslavia's travails at the final stage of major tournaments, however, our record now stands at a much more respectable 6-6.
4: Being almost unbeatable in semi-finals. Audioslavia's senior side have a scarily good record in the last four of any competition, and have lost only one semi-final match in thirteen attempts.
5: Off pitch entertainment: A fervent, yet well-behaved support. Audioslavia's fans are generally friendly, enjoy mixing with the locals and are partial to the odd litre of whisky. Not to mention the tabloid antics of one Jeremy Jaffacake.
6: On-pitch anti-entertainment. The Audioslavian national team have always played effective, if uninspiring football. The side are usually solid, with a cautious approach play and a willingness to hold on to possession rather than attempt anything too rash.
7: Building rivalries: Audioslavia count, and have counted, a lot of nations as their 'rivals'. They are, in order of healthiest to most hated: Lemmitania, Karditan, The Inevitable Syndicate, Legalese, New Montreal States, Halfassedstates, Iansisle, Vilita/Turori, Bedistan, Starblaydia, Squornshelous, Rejistania, Total n Utter Insanity, Krytenia U19s, Krytenia U21s, Krytenia 'C'. Krytenia 'B', Them.
8: Audioslavia have had, throughout their history, a disproportionate amount of wingers with names beginning with 'J'.
9: Audioslavia are the first and only team to have been eliminated from the group stage of a World Cup on penalties.
10: Audioslavia is home to Kirola Sportswear, the manufacturers of some of the more... avant garde football strip designs seen around the World Cup.

Audioslavian footballers tend to be a little on the small side compared to modern NS athletes. The average height for a goalkeeper is about 6'0, but centre-halves tend to top out at 5'11 and other outfielders rarely venture higher than 5'9 (although the 'target-man' style strikers tend to be taller, such as the 6'2 Karsten Eiger). All of Audioslavia's players, throughout history, have been human and male. Our players tend to be fairly quick with a lot of stamina and physical fitness, and are proficient at short passing. In general, however, our technique is fairly poor, our forward play is particularly uncreative and our small-ish team tends to struggle against physical teams. Our goals usually come near the end of games as our high stamina wins through. The national side frequently employ players of Audioslavian citizenship/parentage but who are naturalised elsewhere. Current goalkeeper Kajaxo Imaslavii and striker Vucidini Zekani were born in Vilita and play their football over there, and a significant chunk of the squad are taken from Starblaydi high-flyers Cedrus Soundgardia, a team based on Starblaydia's Cedrus Isle, a place with a high percentage of Audioslavian diaspora. Recently, the national side has used players born as far afield as Cafundeu, Taeshan, Turori and Krytenia.

As for the current crop, striker Karsten Eiger is, at 6'2, easily the biggest member of the squad and is used as a target man for the team's five midfielders. Zonnestraal and Mannestraal Jansen are twins, both wingers, both very very fast and with the ability to play with either foot. Elsewhere in midfield, James Courier is the twenty-four year old sensation who's harrying midfield play helped Audioslavia to the last two World Cups, while Garrastazu is a product of Falconwhereveryouare's involvement in professionalising the formerly amateur Audioslavian team Moreazerua and moving them to their league. Zekani is a striker currently being played out on the wing in the national team, and Zerubeltzak is an exciting young prospect plying his trade in the Pazhujeb leagues. In defence, John Ryan is a world-classs centre-half, but the rest of the back four are nothing special. Goalkeeper Imaslavii is a rising star in the Vilitan leagues, currently first choice keeper at the famous Jungle Strike F.C.

Roleplaying permissions: We frown on god-modding if there isn't a sense of humour behind it. Everything else is fine. If you'd like to injure a few players or dish out red cards for a particularly harsh game, go right ahead, go hog wild. Want to injure the entire team in a bus-crash? Fine, but make it good, or suffer the humiliation of having your limbs scattered hither and thither via a blast from my mighty ignore-cannon.

The Inevitable Syndicate National Football Team
For The World Cup 66

Well, the IFA has fallen on some hard times. Stricken with controversy after claims that the IFA had paid off a crack team of GhoulBlasters to caputure the Adherent of the Random Number Gods, Margaret, in order to secure the World Cup 66 bid, the IFA's reputation has gone from bad to worse. That hasn't stopped the team from trying to keep up appearances, with a decent finish in the 2nd Jeremy Jaffacake Jamboree. As one of the host nations, it's up to the national team to set an example for the rest of the sporting world, and try to go for victory against some of the best teams in the sporting world.

There is also a third kit, which is mostly gold, if neither of these is suitable.

My RP Permissions are pretty chill to be honest.
Pretty much anything goes, I only ask that you let me decide the severity of any injuries you decide to RP for me, please.
Send my players off if you must -- if its a player I really didn't wanna lose for the next game, I'll RP an appeal or something.
Oh and at the risk of sounding a bit "RAWR" ... do not kill any of my players or coaching staff (unless I say go ahead via TG).
Killing fans is okay though. Go nuts with that if you like.

Most likely to...
Score a goal: Kristen Rees or Ezio Grassi
Create that goal: Sergio Estevez or Toby Drummond
Win a free kick: Toby Drummond or Kristen Rees
Take (and score) that free kick: Sergio Estevez
Win a penalty: Ezio Grassi, Toby Drummond or Kristen Rees
Take (and score) that penalty: Toby Drummond or Celia Caporaso
Miss a penalty: Ashley Allen, ironically enough
Score a header off a set piece: Mario Donati
Score an own goal: Mario Donati
Hack an opponent down: George Spencer
Lose their head and get sent off: George Spencer
Commit a professional foul: Zachariah Morgan or Damian Fonseca
Argue with the referee: Leon Donaldson
"Disappear" during a match: Arturo Monte
"Put in a shift": Sergio Estevez or Nicolo Maga
Have an elaborate goal celebration planned out: nobody, the gaffer doesn't approve
Get caught stumbling out of a nightclub: any fringe player, the others have too much to lose
Do charity work: Kristen Rees
Elicit marriage proposals from fans: Marco Soranno

Firstly, the NSWiki page is not complete, but still worth a look...

It's important to note that the team itself generally doesn't consciously defend. They press high up the pitch though and try to win the ball back as quickly as possible, sometimes over-committing, and leaving themselves vulnerable to a swift counterattack. Generally pacy defenders help to alleviate this problem somewhat.

They will also slow down when ahead later in the game, but only so they don't unnecessarily provide opportunities to lose possession and/or concede. This doesn't mean they wont take the opportunity to score if it presents itself, though...

The front line of three is often very flexible, with all three capable of playing in any of the front three roles at any given time. Most of the time, the centre forward/striker will remain the focal point of the team's central attacking, though.

If there is an attacking midfielder on the pitch, they will likely operate as a "false ten" in tandem with a forward dropping deep (like a "false nine"). Effectively they will be most likely to get onto the end of passes in the final third, and thus score goals. On the occasions no specifically named attacking midfielder is used, typically it is an indicator that the manager expects a tighter battle for possession in the midfield zone. In these situations, expect Estevez to push forward more often, while the third midfielder is a more defensively-focused option.

The fullbacks typically overlap a lot -- considering how often the wingers change sides and become "inverted" (i.e. cutting inside the defender on their stronger foot, rather than pulling wide) -- and seem to operate almost as advanced as wingbacks (or even midfielders against considerably weaker teams) a lot of the time, making the system a sort of like a 3-4-3 when Osarius attack, due to Caporaso (usually) dropping deeper to counter against a potential playmaker "in the hole" for the opposition.

Set piece preferences (in order):
Corner kick takers: Whichever wingers/wide forwards are on the pitch
Penalty takers: Toby Drummond or Celia Caporaso first, otherwise Estevez/Grassi
Free kick takers: Sergio Estevez or Ezio Grassi
Long free kicks: Zachariah Morgan, or the goalkeeper (for offsides, really)

You don't have to stick to all of that, though. It just fits in better with the way I intend to RP my team (when I can).

Something that is important to know is that football isnt the number on sport in Osarius. Its second, to GraviBall, though the gap is closing.

Footballers in Osarius are loved if they make tough tackles, because the combative nature of the game is what the majority of fans like most. Very passionate, are Osarian fans, you see. Sooo... basically, if you're not scoring goals or making crunching tackles, the fans generally aren't impressed. That goes for opponents too... Osarian fans always appreciate a good tackle, so they will even applaud opposition players at times (although they will boo their goals, obvs).

The complicated tactical systems used by modern Osarian teams are well-understood by the fans, and a growing football blogging community within Osarius often has in-depth tactical discussion, and regularly posters show great insight. This is thought to be the result of a general increase in coaching quality throughout the nation, which has also contributed heavily to the national team's increased degree of success in recent years.

From time to time I'll make reference to the area a player is from, and when I do, I will try to add an OOC note to explain what it means, because different regions of Osarius have almost entirely different cultures. For example, Tubrissian people's habits and sayings are heavily based on Phoenician/Carthaginian culture and religious beliefs; Islanders -- those from Kyoshiku/Kholanaras Island in the south-west -- have a warrior-centric culture and are quite insular; many Ikutursans worship a malevolent, erisian, serpent deity... and so on.

Manager: Jermain Lewis
If ever a man epitomised the phrase "born leader", it is Jermain Lewis. A recent poll suggested that a not-insignificant 19% of the Osarian population would vote for the national football team manager to become Prime Minister. Proof that his charismatic, commanding presence transcends his sport. Now hurtling toward his sixtieth birthday, it seems all-too recently that he was dominating the midfield for an Osarius side that never realised it's potential, dragging the rest of the team by the scruff of the neck when they underperformed. Expect to see more of the same as manager, except he'll be working from the dugout instead. Having coached at the highest levels with Firewood City and Osarius since retiring, Lewis has amassed a wealth of tactical knowledge that belies his often straightforward approach to most problems. His remarkable grasp of strategy was evident to few throughout his playing career, though in retrospect, the signs were always there. That he has now successfully maintained and built upon the complex tactical system implemented by his predecessors, and has been remarkable astute in his press conferences, should go some way toward convincing any doubters who may remain: this man was born to lead his country, and many are perhaps thankful he was born in a nation with no military aspirations.

Assistant Manager: Elissa Barca-Carthy
As soon as her appointment was announced, the media went into a frenzy. "Di Corradi was his first choice" claimed some, reminding the nation of the long-past animosity between Elissa Barca-Carthy and the national team manager's mentor. Lewis categorically denied these claims, stating that "Elissa is a winner. The only Osarian football manager to win a tournament, in fact. I always wanted her as part of my backroom team, because he experience will be invaluable." Despite her advancing years, Ms. Barca-Carthy doesn't look it, and is still remarkably sharp. While she has a reputation for excellent (wo)man-management, her acid-tongued delivery of criticism is exactly the kind of tough love Lewis believes some of his players will need.

Coaches: Georgina Carsley, Lorenzo Ruiz, Serenity Lewis, Jayson Dhanda, Ayanna Barca-Carthy

Returning from last campaign, the nicely balanced duo of Georgina Carsley's ultra-pragmatism and Lorenzo Ruiz's cultured aestheticism are to be supplemented by more legendary names. Carsley's work with the defence has not gone unnoticed, and Lewis credits her greatly with increasing overall positional discipline and anticipation among his players. Perhaps even moreso, he values the technical development attributed to Lorenzo Ruiz, as he -- much like Geert Bakker, his late mentor at Firewood -- likes his defenders to be comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Joining the non-playing staff for this campaign are three other former Osarius captains. "Super Ayanna" and Serenity Lewis would, under some circumstances, be assumed to have been appointed for nepotic reasons. Not the case here. Widely considered two of the best Osarian players of the past twenty years, regardless of gender, they were apparently a little intimidating to their younger charges at first. Much like Carsley and Ruiz, the two have an interesting dynamic, much like the one they shared -- albeit briefly -- on the pitch. Serenity's energetic, passionate drive is balanced nicely by Ayanna's calm determination.

The addition of Jayson Dhanda is perhaps testament to hard work. Jermain Lewis has surrounded himself, and his team with characters he can trust, and who he feels will best aid the development of his team. Dhanda's reputation as a tireless worker, who rose to captain his nation -- "largely on the back of severe graft" as former Utica boss John Freeman once said -- is perhaps the inspirational final ingredient in Lewis' recipe for victory.

Specialist Coaches: Lana Schroeder (goalkeeping), Claudio Traga (fitness)
Traga's constantly evolving fitness plans are immensely popular within Osarius -- it is estimated that 50% of all gym-goers or fitspos in the country follow one of them -- and his reputation is well-earned. His latest method, "mental fitness training", combines his vast knowledge of physical fitness with principles that he has proven -- to some extent -- to assist in the mental aspect of the game. Schroeder's extensive knowledge of the goalkeeper position, has been well utilised by Jermain Lewis. It's not easy to step up and replace probably the best goalkeeping coach in the country since the legendary Enzo Corradini. Particularly not when you're a woman in a sport dominated by men. Schroeder has had no such trouble, however. Her expertise has commanded respect and attention from the most promising custodians Osarius has to offer, and she no doubt seeks to help them become legends in their own right.

Medical Staff: Dr. Clara Cormega (physiotherapist), Dr. Vite Karusiki (team doctor)
Dr. Cormega has quickly formed a strong rapport with key members of the squad, likely due to her sometimes unorthodox, but always effective methods. After having she has spent the better part of the past decade learning from her predecessor and completing her PhD last autumn, Dr. Cormega has combined her knowledge and experience with that of her husband -- Grasshoppers Turic manager Roberto -- to play a significant role in the minimising of injury within the Osarius camp. In a similar vein, Dr. Karusiki's openness to new ideas and strong familiarity with athletic injuries have proven invaluable traits. The two have a strong working relationship, and having both graduated from Utica University, they share something of a bond. Dr. Karusiki's expertise appear to extend beyond the typical medical doctor's remit, however, as he has taken on something of a counselling role; much like his predecessor.
