The hypocrisy stupidity is strong with the Lib Dems.

Fixed. My fix also explains the lack of Hydrogen and the inclusion of Hybrid on that list.

We could have totally different parties in Parliament by them. Hopefully the BNP isn't one of them.

There are so many easier routes to take in the pursuit of lower carbon emissions than banning all fossil fuelled cars and trucks...

However, most of them involve radical changes in electrical generation and possibly a lot of nuclear power which isn't exactly popular at this time.

Changes in electricity generation are and forever will be much less radical than changes to what fuel goes into vehicles. By 2040, most of the coal and gas powerplants in the UK will be due for decommission or overhaul which makes it even easier to change over to renewables and nuclear power. The fact that many people are opposed to nuclear power is not an excuse not to develop it unless we decide fallacies are worth taking into consideration. People need to get over their irrational fear of nuclear power and look towards it as a genuine alternative. Removing coal and gas power from the grid will probably eliminate anywhere between three to four times as much CO2 emissions as making every car and truck electrically powered.

Petroleum and oil-based products are still the best fuel we have for cars and will likely be synthetically developed long after peak oil is reached. Granted cars need to become greener, but removing oil completely from the equation is not the best answer for the conundrum of climate change.

Of course those NIMBY (Not in my back yard) types will be trying their hardest to keep the nuclear power out of usage.

Good for them, good luck with that. I can see fossil fuel consumption drop greatly, but to eliminate it seems unlikely in 27 years.

Doesn't surprise me. Any chance the UK could at some point get a party that doesn't want to ban everything?

A waste of resources. Usage of fossil fuel autos will automatically drop a lot by 2040. We should focus on creating incentives to switch over earlier, not punishing those who don't.

Petrol tax exemption, reduced prices for green cars, incentives to green tech research?

Those are some incentives, aye. Helping fund nationwide electric charging infrastructure is a good idea, too.

I would guess countries like the UK and Japan are much better suited to having electric cars anyway, compared to Canada or Russia for example. Small so you can easily put the infrastructure in place. A combination of nuclear power and electric cars would seem like a sensible arrangement, though the Lib Dems would also need to drop their opposition to nuclear power.

I would hate to see classic cars driven from the roads, there should always be room for a bit of diversity.

You mean, British Lib Dems want to put a date by which we will either have to ban fossil fuels, or far more likely get to 2035 and be like
"Well shit, that isn't going to happen because we set an arbitrary date and then acted as though it was progress and then did something else for a while and suddenly deadlines. Better move the arbitrary deadline back a decade. That'll fix the problem of the deadline."

Why don't we, oh I dunno, agree that using fossil fuel autos is a pretty shitty thing to do and agree that we should get rid of it ASAP whenever we're able to make a little progress.

Stupid targets like this will only push back the date we achieve that.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

I think this idea is stupid and unnecessary because in 2040 most cars would be electric or would polutte less than now.

Also, the entire world will apparently reach peak oil production in the middle of this century.

Well, the USA has individually reached peak oil production in the 70s. Not the same for other oil producing countries.
