The term 'big' is never fully explained by anyone. I never did understand it.

Its a cliche phrase used to inflate perception of a club (often at the expense of another), that's all. New signings will say it all the time (or "a club with such a proud history"). It sounds good, but is ultimately hollow. Doesn't mean it won't offend rival fans though (it is a major part of the reason I despise Dwight Yorke after all).

I assume once upon a time it actually had meaning, though. Probably along the lines of historical reputation and success... in more modern times its probably more to do with financial factors on the balance of things. In Football Manager, it would be the club's reputation score, presumably.

That all said... I might not agree with Rodgers, but I'd call him a bigger fool if he didn't claim it.

And if you're talking the full history of the clubs, he's got a case. If you look at which of the two has been "bigger" than the other throughout history, I suppose you'd have to say it has been Liverpool, right?

True...sort of. I mean, for the last twenty years, Arsenal have been the more successful club (Liverpool's CL win notwithstanding). The twenty years before that it was pretty clearly Liverpool. But before that it was pretty much honours even.

It's a redundant claim, though. Spurs fans claim their club is bigger than Arsenal. I, of course, would disagree. Really, it's just a stick with which to beat a rival: see Newcastle/Sunderland, the Sheffield clubs, Portsmouth/Southampton (or more likely now, Portsmouth/Bournemouth), Ipswich/Norwich...

I feel sorry for Bristol Rovers. Got relegated two seasons ago, were bottom in November, new manager (old manager and fan favourite) comes in, they get more points than anyone else in League 1 or 2 from when he takes over until April, miss out on the playoffs, real sense of optimism around the club, favourites to go up...

Then lose 4 first team players to long term injury, including their star winger for the whole season. Life's a bitch.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!! Bates is OUT! :)))))))))))))))))

Club statement reads -

“Ken Bates has ceased to be president of Leeds United. Mr Bates will now no longer have any role within the football club.”

Short and fucking sweet :) Guess the new management managed to remove the wool over their eyes.

I am so going to get pissed today :D

Its like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. We're still fucked of course but at least the last remaining bits of the Chelsea cancer has been removed from my club.

I'm happy. If we stay in the Championship another season...I am happy to pay that price to have gotten rid of that horrible horrible excuse of a human being.

I'll be interested to see if the recovery is accelerated or not. Mostly it's not, of course, but very occasionally removing a massive cunt causes an overdrive in forward momentum.

Yeah I might have been a bit premature...seems there is some debate regarding Bates's ownership of Elland Road and Thorpe Arch (training grounds)...

Bugger.

And we just won, 3-2. To make things better our rivals were humiliated on a 3-0 basis.

I'd really like to participate in the conversations here some more, but it's way too eurocentric. Understandable, giving that there is no football outside Europe.

Who do you support ?? There are some regulars in the thread from the States, if you're talking about MLS.

It was more in a sarcastic manner. Compared to my "homeground", that is, south american football and its hijinks, it's like something from another world. And although I quite like the MLS, it has a long way to go.

Quick question: in what light do you guys see FC Porto? It can be something very vague or the first thing that comes to your head.

They're a good Portuguese club. That's the limit of my knowledge.

Those are crap names in England, so why did we feel the need to copy them?

I think we're going for that thing that some films do, where they make a similar sounding film to a blockbuster in the hopes that stupid people will confuse the two. They're maybe hoping that some foreign fans will tune into an exciting Championship match between Raith Rovers and Morton on the understanding that those are English teams because its not as though they've even heard of Kirkcaldy and Greenock let alone know that they're in Scotland.

I like their jerseys. Also, they are better than Sporting, which isn't saying much. Sporting really has gone downhill.

The Brazil is like the distribution center. They have to leave it to go to Porto and Benfica, get put on a shelf, and have a price tag attached. Then you can buy them.

But occasionally teams costumers will buy straight from the source if they really like the product.

Clubs tend to think that buying Brazilian players directly from Brazil is risky. A lot of South American players can't adapt to European football, and it ends up leaving the club at a loss. Porto tends to grab the best youngsters and offers competitive, European football to said players. If they hold up to the challenge, they get bought out for big bucks from richer leagues, and they are (mostly) guaranteed performers.

As a fan, that was enlightening. Thanks guys!
