How about you just take myths to be what they are: myths?
Many cultures are aware that their mythologies are myths, that their legends are legends, that their sacred stories are stories. Their myths themselves are intended and used as teaching stories that guide individual behaviour in ways that support the individual and the community, not as metaphysical speculation.
Why can't you just use thy myths like such cultures do?

There are in Single-celled organisms inside a clump of dirt?

Those organisms are not considered the dirt. They live on & within the dirt.

Those who authored the gospels and developed the Bible into its current form did not hold these beliefs; anything conforming the Bible to modern science is simply an admission to the ever-receding ignorance incident to theology.

That's not true at all:

1) I was not discussing Paul or anything about the Gospels, they are as meaningless Biblically to me as Harry Potter is.
2) God gave humans understanding, and it is in our capacity to understand the way he has created us.

You weren't discussing Paul nor the gospels because you're not even speaking about Christianity, this much is clear.

I now understand now why Darwin thought religion to be nothing more than a primitive defense mechanism, for people of your logic must have troubled him as well.

It had to be illegally, because the USSR had state atheism and considered all religious individuals to be uneducated sub-humans.

The USSR never outlawed religion, though it did pursue anti-religious policies.
Was baptism actually illegal?

Which perfectly explains why they mass-published Leo Tolstoy, oh wai-

Would you like to embarrass yourself further? USSR Government believed that religion is "Opium of the Masses", but they didn't think that religious people were sub-humans, or uneducated. They viewed, rather incorrectly, religion as opium, and viewed religious people as addicts; but one can be an addict, and be an educated human being, like the fictional Dr. Gregory House. Also, Praying was allowed in the Red Army during WWII.

It was not illegal to be Orthodox in the former Soviet Union, but the Orthodox Church was effectively controlled by the Communist Party until Glasnost.

Yeah, but it was kind of illegal, like driving 80 MPH on the freeway in the US :P

Officially illegal, unofficially, few actually cared :P

I encourage you to read more about religion in the Soviet Union, because you're as assertive as you are foolish. This can start you off, I hope:
Sakwa, Richard (2008), Putin: Russia’s choice (2nd ed.), Abingdon, Oxfordshire: Routledge, ISBN 0-203-93193-9
http://books.google.com/books?id=R0PrjC ... &q&f=false

Also, your entire section about religion being opium is misguided. Karl Marx once wrote in an unpublished diary entry that religion is an opium, among many other things--nothing more.
I've researched Karl Marx and the USSR extensively; to me, it's clear you must have received them only by word-of-mouth.
Additionally, there were re-education programs intended primarily for religious people. Clearly, as you would have it, this means nothing about how the USSR felt about the education of pious individuals.
