DESIGN

The AQ-1 'Devastator' UAV is the result of a change in Freekish military doctrine towards an air, ground, and sea force comprised largely of combat drones. As with the FT6-A1 'Asator' main battle tank, it was determined that fielding larger numbers of smaller, lower cost units would offset and indeed best the global trend of large, expensive military hardware. However, Panopticon Corporation has not skimped on the technology, and the AQ-1 UAV boasts some of the most advanced targeting systems currently in use by AMF.

Designed initially as a reconnaissance aircraft, the AQ-1 was in short order modified in order to carry a variety of payloads for offensive combat operations. The UAV is largely constructed of composite materials to reduce its radar cross section, but is by no means as stealthy as other unmanned aircraft the Empire is introducing. A turbofan engine was chosen to give the AQ-1 a higher speed (but with a loss of range), allowing it to penetrate defended airspace quickly. After initial testing, additional hardpoints were installed to allow the UAV to carry air-to-air missiles currently carried by larger aircraft, allowing the AQ-1 to participate in aerial combat.

ARMAMENT AND AVIONICS

The AQ-1 is first and foremost a reconnaissance tool, and has been outfitted with a multi-spectral targeting system, allowing it to operate day or night and perform a variety of roles. Not only can it provide high resolution and infrared imagery, it can also laser designate targets for air strikes. As with all next generation Freekish military hardware, it comes equipped with the 'Cryocom' IES (Integrated Electronics System), which allows it to network with naval vessels, other aircraft, ground armor, and even infantrymen. Through this combat networking system, the AQ-1 will soon become a workhorse of battlefield intelligence gathering, giving commanders on the ground even more critical information about enemy movements and communications.

However, the 'Devastator' UAV will also play an offensive role as well, and can be outfitted with a variety of air-to-air or ground attack munitions. From medium to short range the AQ-1 can engage light armor and main battle tanks, as well as helicopters and even fixed wing aircraft. It can carry up to 4 laser guided bombs itself, and can lase targets on the ground for friendly aircraft to engage, allowing the AQ-1 to not only attack hostile ground forces, but also aid in SEAD operations.

PROPULSION

Air Tek, the top engine manufacturer in Automagfreek, designed the AG6-2 turbofan especially for the AQ-1. The decision to go with a turbofan instead of a turboprop was the result of much debate, for the former allows the 'Devastator' to travel at greater speeds but does not provide the range and endurance of a turboprop. Panopticon decided on the turbofan because other UAV's currently being fielded (and also under development) are able to operate for long periods of time in purely reconnaissance roles, and thus the AQ-1 would be better suited with a faster engine to bolster its attack abilities.

The announcement comes on the heels of prior reports that FI was nearing bankruptcy despite record sales of the 'Dreadfire' class super dreadnought, which sent their stock plummeting by 15% almost immediately.

Freekish Industries was, until now, a state run corporation tasked initially with providing Automagfreek with exclusive weapons systems, but has in the last year gone public. International sales were strong at first, but with the onset of the economic crisis orders have stalled and forced the company into a difficult situation. Many experts have been left dumbfounded as to why the Great Hall would sign off on such a venture, but inside sources close to Lord Azrael's top economic advisers have confirmed that the Empire has been struggling with the economic fallout of not only the blockade of Gholgoth, but the regional civil war.

Speaking on the floor of the main Freekish Industries factory in St. Freeksburg, Mr. Samoth gave a rousing speech in which he praised his counterpart and painted a bold prediction of the future. Today marks the beginning of a bright new future, a future in which Panopticon will help to shape through innovation.
