Port Hawthorne wins 1-0 over Maklohi Vai
TIMOTHY GURGANU
Maklohi Vai

Port Hawthorne (1-0-1) played its first away game in Maklohi Vai (0-0-2) this morning. Port Hawthorne was progressive from the get go on the fore-check. High concentration of play in the Valan zone. Their defensemen were in and out of the sinbin all game for hooking calls.

Team captain was able to secure the only goal of the game midway through the second period at 12:35.

Due to protests over their win against the Valan they were not permitted to leave the arena until the crowd dissipated. There are unconfirmed reports that the Valan hospitality at the area was superb.

Vlad Krogstad had waited patiently through the first match with Svengarda, well aware that as a full member of the bench, he was unlikely to see any action unless there was a injury in the four lines in front of him. A one one draw was disappointing, sure, but there wasn't much he could do about it.

Until Arvid Holberg started complaining of a collarbone strain in training that week however, and was dropped as a precaution. Franz Pettersen moved up to the first line, young Vladimir Vahatalo was promoted to line two, and the veteran Kirri van Antonsen moved up to line three. Meaning Vlad would get his first appearance on the ice for his nation, slotting into line four with fellow youngsters Dimitar Bech and Sander Turja.

Points come first though, obviously, and he could hardly blame Heliokomman for that, but it certainly wasn't helping that itchy feeling in the base of his back as he fidgeted and waited impatiently for his chance to show the fans just what he could do. Instead, he had to sit and watch the first three lines have their fun. The first period flashed by; Radoslav Invermuir, Rad Nebu, and Mikhail Szmolarek all scored, and the Firs went into the first break in full control of the match.

Towards the end of the second period however, with Vaugania still offering little the in the way of a real threat for the Firs to contend with, Heliokomman made the decision, and the fourth line got their chance. The ice felt good beneath Vlad's blades. He could feel the eyes around him watching, and judging, but far from adding pressure he felt invigorated by them. He thought about taking a moment to absorb the moment, but there was no time. The Vauganian attack broke down, and Maarten Skreig slapped it up towards Dimitar Bech down the left, he pulled it back into the middle for a spinning Sander Turja. Sensing the chance, Vlad skated into space and collected the predictable pass from Sander. He pulled back his stick, and his next memory was of being slammed against the boards by his ecstatic teammates. Vlad Krogstad one, Vaugania nil.

The Daily Sheep

Last night Birolika ended up losing to Qazox in an incredibly run of the mill match, it was a three-one defeat with Mark Pelav taking the only goal of the match for Birolika. However the coaches have commented that it wasn't the complete thrashing they'd expected against Qazox and they did get on the scoreboard; or as the saying goes "Ansram gar korsch" which translates losely as "It wasn't as bad as the we had expected it to be and our situation is still good" so we lost, however we didn't lose too badly and are still halfway up the table. Anyway here goes the match:

In the first period Qazox's Ivan Mzachinov put Qazox ahead as expected. The Birolikan fans stood by and watched with glum foresight as Qazox skated circles around the Birolikan side, it shows as they only had two shots on goal in the first period, one of which was actually a pass which ended up getting stopped by the goalie. However there was one upside of the first period that the second line reappeared, apparently they had gotten as far as the border when they saw a short news story in a greasy cafe that they were being frowned upon by the Birolikan hockey association and they were encouraged to come back before "tan sareker iray" which means before their dinner goes cold (it makes more sense in Birolika.)

In the second period things got off to a poor start with Qazox scoring again, at this point most Birolikans were sat back with their watery beer looking comfortable in their expected misery. However from about the 5th minute of the second period Birolika saw a flurry of activity, they made 8 of their shots in this time up until the end of the period and it resulted in a Mark Pelav goal. The Birolikan fans know when to take advantage of the good points and some were even reported to dance and jump up when they scored. However while Pelav might take the credit for this, youth prospect Artem Rilley from the Canines made three shots which were all close. Rilley is promising because he seems to get around the problem of avoiding physical confrontation by skating faster than his opponents. The second period ended at 2-1 and at the same time so did Birolika's flurry of activity.

In the third period things dulled down a bit with Birolika making seven shots during the period, so it wasn't that bad. However Qazox controlled the flow of play and eventually buried the game with Cam Rice taking a penalty shot in the 6th minute of time. The third period wasn't great, but it wasn't bad and didn't result in the desired outcome so said the head coach.

Next game we have Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, who are unranked. Therefore this will be Birolika's best chance at another win along with the Audioslavia game possibly, although I'm sure the fans will settle for a non-embarrassing defeat or draw. When asked about Andossa Se Mitrin Vega Artem Rilley said "Our best chance is to try and score while they're not paying attention, so maybe if we bore them first?"

Current goal tally:

Mark Pelav: 2
John Jacker: 1
Bob Yam: 1
Nate Crash: 1

"Look, I get it. Lots of things can be neither dead nor alive, no one's disputing that."

"Yes, but--"

"We call them "inanimate objects," a hockey puck, a--"

"Why is it always about hockey with you?"

"Because, you promised me we could help the hockey team with this. Which hasn't happened yet, by the way. Did they win?"

"Did they--oh, for crying out loud. Here, look it up yourself, there should be a replay on later tonight."

"A replay? I want to watch it live. And/or not alive. If that's your thing."

"Listen, the point of the cat metaphor is that, until we observe the cat, it can be in some sense both dead and alive."

"Yeah, you're going to have to be more specific on the "in some sense" thing."

"Listen, just--work with me here. Or in Rushmore or wherever the heck else we get dragged to."

"Rushmore?"

"We're visiting Carmadin at some point, aren't we? We'll go to Rushmore."

"Okay, but. Rushmore's kind of big. Is there any place in particular you wanted to go?"

"...Carmadin."

"To see the team."

"Yes."

"Who we can also see play here when we want."

"Yes. Which stadium are they in, by the way?"

"Oh, no one really cares, do they?"

"Well, I don't exactly. But the point stands."

"Wait a minute!"

"Yes?"

"This thought experiment begins with radioactive particles, correct? That might or might not decay over the course of the process?"

"Of course."

"And we wait for enough time that there's a fifty percent chance that the particle will decay, so it's equally likely that it will or won't trigger the poison gas?"

"Right, one half-life."

"Half-life! So we already are talking about things that are half alive and half dead?"

"No. Now go watch your replay."

First period: Trilum 4:27, Borodin 11:50
Second period: Hethgard 10:08, Logle 19:23

WCoH Column: Weatherdon Draws Sicoutimont at Nil; Travels to Mapletish
by Dan Erikson, Sports Editor
MICHAEL VII

Yet again, the Weatherdon team's "iron legs" have failed them, as they tied a game at home, with neither side scoring. The blueline corps held Sicoutimont to only 16 shots, but the offense just didn't seem to happen.

Fans were clearly not pleased with the teams effort, as sections started to open up during the third period. Most of the bars in the Arena District were either quiet, or completely empty, as they did not win a game that everyone wanted to call "easy" or "assured."

With only one point in 2 games, the Weatherdon squad will have to go on a winning streak if they want to qualify for the knockout stage.

Not bad, not good either

ZIKETONIA-Soviet Canuckistan tied the Ziketonians today today advance them to second spot in Group 10, just behind the Valanorans. The first period wasn't an exciting one, both teams making no progress against the other one. However, the second period was a controversial one beginning with a hit from behind on center Heinz Kampf, rendering him unable to play the rest of the game. A couple of minutes later, pandemonium erupted on the arena after a Canuckistani goal which was disallowed by a supposed "kicking motion" by the scoring forward. The game continued with the majority of play in the Ziketonian end with no goals from the Canuckistanis.

We talked to Head Coach George Kino after the game and he had this to say, "Can't complain about this result, a good performance for Prefontaine, two shutouts in a row. We come home tomorrow to a tough opponent, though hopefully we can play extremely well and do well." Tickets are sold out for tomorrow's game at the Sailfish International Airlines Center, however it will be broadcast outside on large screens in Government Square tomorrow and in other places throughout the nation. In other news, the Soviet Quebexicans lost 3-2 to Nopspri to make them last in their pool

Txordin Zubiondo, Audioslavia's player manager, hadn't had a good week. Qazox and Andossa Se Mitrin Vega. Granted, both were formidable opponents in any sporting arena, but the Zezenak had been desperate to come away from their opening encounter with at least a point, and failed. ASMV were a strong team, belying their unranked status in a similar way to how Audioslavia had done, four years ago.

The cameras snapped. Txordin blinked. Another press conference. Txordin had grown to despise them.

"Will you be changing the starting line-up for the next game?" came a voice from beyond the glare.
"No. The lines all know each other, to change things now would be stupid. All we need is a bit of luck, gentlemen. Two difficult games at first, but there's still plenty of time to go."
"Should the Ice Bulls be recruiting a full-time manager? Rather than a player-manager?" came another voice
"No. I like the job and, given time, will come to good"
"Not even if it makes you play better?"
"No. Next question"
"Can I ask a question in Ausque" came another voice, referencing the Auskal language of the home of Txordin - and, indeed, Audioslavian Ice Hockey.
"Uh, yeah. Uh, bai. Galdetu.
"Auskal taldeak jokalari izan behar dela uste duzu? Ez Cazar Auskal jokalari ez kuota bat inposatu herrialdeko gainerako interesatuak saiatuko dela uste duzu?"
Txordin paused. The hack had asked a difficult question that, if he answered this incorrectly, could be construed as a political incident. Auskal independence, and all that.
"No further questions" came the voice of Audioslavian Hockey's press officer, sat to Txordin's left. He stood up. Txordin offered a hurried 'no' to the journalist before being shuffled off the stand, away from the microphones.
"What was that about?" asked Txordin, embarassed at the way he'd been forced to leave the conference. "If I don't answer the question then its going to be make sound like a pro-independence nutter
"The fact that you agreed to answer the question in Ausque is what makes you look like a pro-indie nutter, Txordin" said the PR man.

Port Kostas, Camwood

John Moncrief was the last one into the two suite hotel room, in Port Kostas finest lodging, the Dockport Hotel. It was some half hour past midnight, as he, his wife, and his son stumbled into the lucious hotel room, to hunker down for the night, or at least the couple hours before the flight out to Kingdom of Phoenixia. World Cup season was a hard season for everyone in the Moncrief family.

John clutched his back as he eased his way into the swivel chair stationed at the office-away-fromthe-office set up just past the foyer of the room. It took even more stiffness, soreness, and grunting, to bend down to pull the strong to untie his loafers. Thirty nine and still going strong, he though. Well, kind of.

Jane Moncrief looked on to her struggling husband, in sorrow. She knew how much this game meant to him, he was an idol for little boys Jason's age all over the country. But, how much longer could he do this for. How long could they, the Moncrief family, do this. A handful of seconds later, John Moncrief was in his socks, and he swivelled around to look towards her wife. He knew what was coming, it was inevitable, and he was pretty sure all athletes dealt with this, their spouse begging them to retire; ironically, the spouse of a professional hockey players, was normally the prosecutor for retirement, and the ageing male hero, was the defendant. A plea bargain was always reached, Hockey Players answer to their wives, God, and their coaches - depending on the player, drop the later.

No words were spoken, Jason Moncrief knew, that he was to hop into the shower, and let his parents have another one of their retirement talks. He would lie awake in his room sometimes, completely innocent of the world's temptations, and wonder what it would be like if his Dad was say, an accountant, or a spiffy manager who wore a suit and tie to work everyday, and came back home for every supper. However, those boys didn't have millions of dollars waiting to be inherited, so he guess that life was all about compromise.

Johm Moncrief didn't say anything, but nodded, and said, "okay," in a hushed voice. There needn't be discussion this time, the couple knew their lines, they knew the debacle, befpore it would happen, so they skipped it. Moncrief opened the lid of what was just another pleasure of being an above-middle-class man: a laptop. It took a couple minutes to start up, a couple minutes to figure out the wireless internet connection, and five or so minutes to right the email. The "To" box said "greg.harrison@enterprisesportsreps.cmw" It took awhile to type, but all he had to type to get his automatic contact book to respond, was "Gre". He used that address enough. Two paragraphs later, and a brief spell check he looked back at his wife with glassy eyes. It was the end of marvellous journey, he knew. By noon, the CBC Sport guys would be going on with their poetry, the end of an epic, the end of dynasty, yada yada yada. What a great trip it has been. A tear streamed down the face of an hero, and he moved his mouse cursor over "SEND" and pushed down on the left button. A career done, a quest completed.

In a hotel room near the InComm Arena at Northern Sunrise Islands...
"SCHOLARS? This must be a joke. Those smug Licentians must be kidding us!" yelled the coach at his own room. "And the fact that we beaten then by sole two goals is just stupidity!"
The coach then proceeded to smoke another cigarette, displeased.
"...Screw them, if we don't get a serious opponent, might as well just let them kill our opponents from now on."

Scholars fall in front of the Stars
The Stars faced a pretty young team of students from Licentiapacisterra in ther second match of Qualifiers. The Stars scored two goals in the start of the first period, when, for some strange reason, the whole team fell down in the ice, and were, supposedly, knocked out. Probably by air. The coach then called the match out by forfeit, mantaing NSI's two goals.

Flames manage nil-nil draw against Kelssek

Although revenge was in the mind of all Yesopalithans today as the Flames took the rink against Kelssek, who defeated the Flames in the Round of Sixteen in the previous World Cup, hosted by Yesopalitha, the result was a nil-nil draw as neither team could score a goal against two capable goalkeepers: Jean-Claude Georges of Kelssek and Adrian Markov of Yesopalitha.

The best chance the Flames had of scoring was in the middle of the second period when they earned a power play. Ralph Emerson's shorthanded shot bounced off the top of the goalposts, and Nevin Barston's attempt to put the rebound in was blocked by Goerges by the very edge of the goalkeeper's stick. That was the closest the Flames ever got to breaching a very solid Kelssek defense.

Fortunately for Yesopalitha, their own defense was spectacular as well. Claire Cordon, Verene Allender, Brent Cohen, and Tyler Cohen were all equally important on checking the Kelssek wingers on every offensive pass they made up the ice. Kelssek did let loose a barrage of shots at the Yesopalithan net, but Markov was at the top of his game, blocking them all.

The result leaves Yesopalitha at the top of the group, tied with Free South Califas as the only teams with a win and a loss. Filopines will be next for the Flames as they look to prove that the last edition's success was not a fluke.

One River, Two Worlds

This is enemy territory. Byfugland. The name makes you shudder. This game is more important than the tournament itself; it's for bragging rights, it's for pride, it's for Zollnando. It's dictator versus dictator, offense versus defense, twins versus clones, Thrilledge versus Byfuglien. The two leaders, lifetime rivals in everything, love to settle it on the ice. And why wouldn't you? It's hockey; it's as violent as you make it, and with these two teams it gets violent and then some.

History between the two nations on the ice is less than pleasant. That slander campaign they ran on Chris Koni was uncalled for and not to mention the robbing of our labs to create clones of the Bryant twins. Can't make good enough hockey players yourself? Plus the best player has a name that even he has trouble pronouncing.

"Traveling to Justinia is always an adventure," said dictator and captain Blastings Thrilledge when asked about the upcoming match in Byfugland, "one usually filled with eggs." Oh the infamous egg incident when ex-Dread Patrick Finn was concussed as the team was assaulted by Justinia natives as they threw eggs at the Dreads as they arrived at the arena. Finn was forced to sit out that game and that injury took years off his career.

As badly as he wants to win this game, Blastings wants to make the game worth a little more than hockey as he called out Byfugland leader Justin Byfuglien at the latest team press conference. "Hey Justin, how about we make this game a little more interesting? Winner gets Zollnando? I like that. No more stupid debates about who owns our river."

In today's game the Dreads faced off against The Gypsies and ended in a scoreless draw as neither team generated too much offense and defensive play was solid on both ends of the ice. Neither goaltender faced twenty-five shots as the Dreads played great defensively and poor on offense, unable to capitalize on any of the three power plays they were given.

Last year we had the Seven Factor, thanks to Dallas, it seems as though we have the EIGHT FACTOR!

-JAGOZA STATE UNIVERSITY

Okay, so now we got a crowd going. Against a small team that we were always supposed to absolutely thrash, and what would be a good chance for Jagozans to get a last gasp look at Michael VII play in Jagoza, given the knockout only schedule in Michael VII, so it was well worth buying tickets. As the home of the Jagoza Yeti team, the Ice Hockey Arena at Jagoza State University, the Blue and Golds came out to play the Republic of the Dallas Stars, in front of a capacity crowd that was off it's rocker. Not too many Dallas fans were out in the stands, but there were a few sporadic fans, not that we're sure where they came from...

So, it was a fun night to visit, and the action started really early, with Line One firing from it's first shift, setting up a couple of scoring chances early, and Line Three getting themselves into a bit of a tussle too, right from the get-go. Eventually, the first of what would eventually be 8 goals, would be scored, and it also came early on, Friedrich Zoller getting credited with the GWG, despite it coming only 5 minutes into the first period, and Mattheus Morkel added another two in the next shift, making for a 3-0 start very early on, all from the high-octane offense of Line One, easily able to capitalise on mistakes, as the Stars really weren't ready for the M7 defense, and they were getting crushed.

After getting up 3-0 early on, it's easy to rattle the goalie, so the goals kept flowing. Flying sharpshooter Alexei Andropov added another goal to his tally, to make it 4-0 to M7 with 4.53 remaining in the 1st Period. By now, the crowd was going nuts, and the game was essentially over already, and we were all wondering when the Mercy Rule would be invoked...

The 2nd Period began just like the 1st did, and there seemed to be no disputing that a runaway win was gonna happen. However, for the first time this campaign, a defenseman scored a goal, with disgruntled and very energetic D-man Gerald Carson scoring from way back at the point, on a blistering slapshot, set up perfectly by the cycling Line Four offense that never stays still and is difficult to mark. Now up 5-0, it was a time for a little break, so Head Coach Mark Tasher chose to take the Timeout allotted to us for the game, and then let Lines Three and Four get on the ice for far longer shifts, to give the young guys experience, and letting the big boys get a bit of rest after playing like madmen all game. Not to be outdone, the other young guy on the team, Kyle Junter, the other Wing on Line Four, came out to score his points, getting a rebound shot from Andropov to go past Stars Goaltender easily for the sixth goal of the game.

Finally, the 3rd Period came around, with a devastating 6-0 score being read on the scoreboard, and a 2nd consecutive shutout on the cards. The match was no longer in doubt, and our Scoring Line were pretty happy to just stay off the ice and enjoy watching some awesome hockey on JSU campus, and able to start celebrating another win already, before the slightly bigger test of Equestrian States, before playing big guns Gyatso-kai, already chalked up as a loss in our books. Gerald Fordt added the 7th on the Powerplay, capitalising on a rare penalty from Dallas Stars last night, in the middle of the 3rd, before Zane Spears added the last one in the final minute, when down 2 men shorthanded, scoring a rare defensive 5-on-3 goal on Dallas. After that, we sort of gave up, and were happy up 8-0 and were just protecting a shutout again, now with 2 wins from 2 games, and 9 goals for, with a surprising ZERO goals against us.

Is this the year of the weirdly named EIGHT factor? Maybe. But this time we don't have Carmadin shoving those conspiracy theories down our throats!

The first period was over. The team, led by Jean-Luc Desjardins, ran back into the room. The TV was quickly flicked on to Channel22News, the top news channel in Sicoutimont. The lead story in the entire country was Seamus Sinclair's arrest over a false passport. A press conference was being held by first the Sicoutimont Department of International and Foreign Arrests, and HockeySicoutimont. SDIFA explained why he was arrested, and what the bail would be, how long he'd be in jail, and HockeySicoutimont said that they supported Seamus Sinclair through all this, knew his passport was real, and would welcome him back to the team after this. But the team still felt dejected. No-one, not even Coach Nillonier spoke a word during the intermission. The team headed back onto the ice, hearts shattered, and played like it, too. 2 minutes into the 2nd period Soviet Quebixico had a 5 on 3 powerplay. They scored on both to make it 2-0. By the end of the second period, the score was 3-0 in favour of Quebixico. And the fans began to leave, 21,000 of them quickly became 14,000, and Team Sicoutimont couldn't overcome the defecit. Final score, 3-0 Soviet Quebixico. The Sicoutians are still 2nd in the group, with 3 points. They are currently tied with Nopspi and Weatherdon for 2nd, behind Darmen with 5 points. Sicoutimont's next game is against the Darmeni, which will be a tough game for the team, and even tougher without Seamus Sinclair.....

OOC: Sorry for not delivering a decent RP last match, I thought I posted, but didn't, so I had to cover it up that way. Blame my bronchitis.
After the match, the players return to the locker room, where they find their disappointed coach.
"Good job." said the coach, looking the floor.
"But we didn't win... We lost to the home team!" said Sioux, confused.
"...No problem, we still are near the front." the coach said, still looking to the floor.
"We have lost to an unranked team, that is the kind of thing that would get you pissed!" yelled Sioux, angry.
"So what? We lost, boo hoo. There are still more seven matches to go, and considering we got past Falcontitanic IN OUR DEBUT, I'm more surprised than that."
"But we were supposed to win, coach. Just as you keep saying!" said Rougeau, with somewhat of a french tone while speaking.
"...I say this so you guys keep working hard. Newcomers rarely have the kind of luck to enter in the top spot of the world in any sport right on the start. You guys should be happy if we manage to get to the tournament itself." The coach lighted up a cigarette, like usual. "Might as well get used to the worst right away."
Later, in the plane to Port Hawthorne.
O'Shea was looking to a picture he had in a small necklace.
"What did you leave there, man?" said position-colleague Templer.
"Family. An old mother, an old father, two small sisters and Lucky."
"Lucky?"
"Our family dog. Started playing Hockey to have money to feed him. We were very poor back then, but since I got a spot at the Cornhuskers, things have gone our way."
"For real?"
"Yep. They are still poor, I keep sending money to them every month. I wouldn't want to live without them, so that's the way I keep reminding myself there is someone important there."
"If we qualify to the World Cup, I believe that the federation will give us a bonification. You could probably move them from their old place to Darveston."
"Papa ain't leaving his farm, I have to respect the old man's wishes, right?"

DE PLACA
New Look, Same Price!

WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY XIX
We weren't wrong, Maklohi Vai wins 1-0.
The first loss ever of the Northern Sunrise Islands' team happened last night, as at the Amakai Arena, Maklohi Vai beat our Stars for 1 to 0. NSI, the favourite didn't expect the team's accuracy and took a goal right on the start. The Stars tried, mostly with the efforts of Sioux, Mortiise, Sharp, Motta and Blanc, but ended short of the goal. The crowd was pretty pleased with the result, however, frustration is the only word we can give on the status of the Stars following the end of their third match in the Road to Michael VIII.
SUMMARY
FIRST HALF

0:15 - GOAL (MAK) ???????
Following Maklohi Vai's policy, DE PLACA wasn't allowed to divulgate the name of the player who scored, regarding "rights of appearence".

Group Nine Pld W D L GF GA GD Win % Pts

6 Falconwhereveryouare 3 0 1 2 4 11 −7 0.167 1

Now, one position down, NSI's opponent are the Ice Wolves of Port Hawthorne. Port Hawthorne's international ice hockey rank is 71, smaller than the rank of Falconwhereveryouare (32) and Cassadaigua (7), but bigger than Maklohi Vai's, Northern Sunrise Islands' and Licentiapacisterra's (All UR). The match will be at the Capital Sporting-Multiplex, in Port Hawthorne and will vallue for the Matchday 4 of the Qualyfing Round.

THE FLIGHT PATTERN- Byfugland's Official Source of Jets Sports

The Battle of Zollnando resulted in a 3-3 tie last night. Byfugland, leading the group heading into the game, fell behind quickly after star goalie Ryan Underhill allowed two goals early in the first period, one by winger Matt Bryant from Blastings Thrilledge, and one on a deflection on a Chris Koni slapshot by grinder Rolf Condren. Heading into the first intermission, the Dreads led 2-0.

The second period saw the most action in terms of fights, as Crusher McPersoncrusher took on Cas Robertallia and brought him to the ice with a devastating right hook. The packed crowd in the nation's capital went ballistic. Coming off the huge fight, Byfugland gained momentum and went on the power play after Casey Bryant was called for hooking. Six minutes into the period and thirty seconds into the power play, defenseman and the superior leader Justin Byfuglien fed it to superstar Vyacheslav Dostoyevski in the slot, who buried the puck top shelf, over the glove of Thrilledge goalie Cory Greenspan.

"Perhaps if [Thrilledge's] citizens weren't so illiterate, they could pronounce my name properly," Dostoyevski joked after the game, in reference to comments made by Blastings Thrilledge earlier in the week.

Later in the second, Byfugland winger and resident enforcer Cliff Soricelli took on rookie Greg Essex, who put up a surprisingly good fight before both players tumbled to the ice simultaneously having landed several good punches. Nearly seconds later, the fight was on between the two leaders- Justin Byfuglien and Blastings Thrilledge. With a crushing right, Byfuglien dragged Thrilledge down to the ice, and the Byfugland crowd roared its approval. By the end of the second period, the score was 2-1 in Thrilledge's favor, but 2-1 in fights for the Jets.

When the puck dropped for the third period, Hank Boudreau's Jets had decided to abandon any reservations and go on the all-out offensive to gain that elusive tying goal. Their lack of a defensive mindset cost them. With the Jets set up cycling the puck in the Dreadlocks' zone, an errant pass by Erik Commodore led to a breakaway by Gunner Smalls, one of Thrilledge's most prolific scorers, who burned Underhill for Thrilledge's third goal. Now, down by two, Byfugland needed to focus all their attention on scoring and not be led into drawing penalties and fighting with the pesky Thrilledge agitators. With five minutes remaining in the period, a 3-on-1 rush led to a brilliant weave-and-pass play that lured Greenspan badly out of position, as Phoenix Holden, Byfugland's best rising star, put one home in the open net, from Fyodor Makarov and Daniel Shelby.

Just over a minute remaining in the third, with Thrilledge desperately trying to stop the onslaught of shots from Byfugland, Boudreau pulled his net minder, and the Jets had a 6-on-5 advantage. They were able to capitalize, as a scrum in front was able to screen Greenspan, and Dostoyevski had his second goal of the night and third of the tournament from the face-off circle to tie the game at 3. Assists went to Justin Byfuglien and Alexandros Ivanov.

The score would remain tied when the final buzzer sounded, and Thrilledge and Byfugland's Battle of Zollnando ended in a stalemate. Despite the Byfugland comeback late, they were outplayed by Thrilledge, and that is largely in part of the stellar play of goalie Cory Greenspan, who over his career has established himself as one of the toughest goalies to score on in the world. Greenspan stopped 43 of 46 shots. Underhill got off to a weak start, allowing two goals in his first four shots faced. He would settle down, though, and finish with 30 saves on 33 shots.

"Thrilledge can talk all they like," captain Justin Byfuglien said after the game. "They can go on and on about how it's their river. But facts are facts. It's our river. We have control. They can wish as hard as they can, but they'll never seize control."

In the Battle of Zollnando, ranging back to WCoH 18, the two squads have been very evenly matched. Thrilledge and Byfugland have each won one match, and now have tied once. Past scores were: 2-1 Thrilledge, 1-0 Byfugland, now 3-3 draw.

A classic game was played by the Vaian team today, with staunch defense that bent but did not break. Players were happy to finally get a win in this tournament, and especially in the third straight 1-0 game. The goal was scored just 15 seconds in the game on a defensive lapse by NSI. The goalscorer could not be determined because of the several bounces it took off of Vaian scorers.

Team Unbeaten, but struggling
by Meghan Potter, Concord Heights Times

It may have seemed to take forever to get everything organized for the World Cup. After all, nations had about three weeks to declare whether or not they wanted to participate in the competition. Then, it took another round of forever to determine who was going to host it. The initial series of bids was not very impressive, to say the least, and a re-vote was held. Add more time to the clock, please.

Eventually, we got our host, and the nation of Michael VII has proven itself already with a successful World Bowl hosting years ago. Now, if you want to pull out the "ain't that ironic?" card, didn't we wait another forever for that World Bowl to start way back when? With all that waiting, nations didn't get a ton of time to prepare for the beginning of World Cup of Hockey 19. If I were to suggest anything to the organizing committee from Michael VII, it would be to allow for greater time between being named host, and actually beginning the competition. Cassadagan Hockey authorities may have been a little more vocal with their request, but since media coverage of this Cup is not expected to be at the level it may have otherwise been, there was really no use. In some ways, though, it can seem like only a week has gone by since Michael VII became host, but even with that, three games are in the book. And that's after all those forevers of the sign up period.

Coach Courtney Rangen scoffs at the excuse, because she knows better. "These are well conditioned athletes and they are always ready to play. We just haven't had things go our way in these early games. It hasn't been horrid either, and we will hope now we can get better results. People need to stop making excuses for us." However former captain Andrew Preston, who now serves as one of the leaders for MEN (Male Equality Now) disagreed, "Players were antsy to start, then we were delayed, then all of the sudden they were thrown out on the ice. That's not an ideal situation. Little things like this are filed away for future reference when nations bid on things in the future. Other nations need time to prepare."

Sportsnet-The Quebecois Voice for Sports
Quebecois destruction of The Scandinavian Islands gained its first victory
Alain Laviande

Head Coach Logan Beaulieu, have said it in the press conference ahead of the match that his struggling team,Royal Kingdom of Quebec Ice Knights, will destroy the Scandinavian Islands and win. It was heard with much interest, as Ice Knights, whose main players have performed under expectations in their previous 2 matches, were seemed to be in a danger of elimination.
However, his men didn't betray this time, as the Ice Knights have dominated the game, injuring 7 players and won the match with 1-0.

The game started with much fanfare in front of the 18,957 audience in the Colisee de Quebec. The first 3 minutes of the game went slowly, until Dominique Abenaki unleashed his punches on the first-line centre for The Scandinavian Islands, injuring and effectively ended the team captain's WCoH adventure. He was called out for a 20-minute penalty and the game went to the disadvantage for the Ice Knights. However, their gritty and heavily offensive style of playing, which held the Scandinavians to their limits in physicality. This have continued for the first two periods, and the Quebecois, who were at least a class or two above this Unranked nation, have blasted 78 shots against 12.

The game was basically over when Colm Strojovic, a talented sniper, have scored with his slapshot, after managed to trick 3 defensemen from the Scandinavian Islands simultaenously at the 12th minute of the third period.
The Ice Knights, after having so much trouble with winning, seems to find their solution for how to win.

MOSCAWA- The Canuckistanis lost their home opener to Valanora 3-0 today in Moscawa. The game opened with a quick goal from Imenien Lithloth, the Valanoran captain with assists from Rindiruionion Naragalal and Laerbelidon Taltauré at 18:21 of the first. They soon attacked again with a beautiful point shot from Málassnen Mallithar to make it 2-0 at 15:54 of the first. The game continued uneventfully till the end of the game as the red light blazed for the third time with the first Canuckistani goal of the game. Scored by Andrew Pollock off a nice wristshot with a pass from Andre Plamondon-Piquette at 6:55. The Valanorans responded though to make it 3-1 off a breakaway goal by Siastien Mithagamyr to end the game.

Pollock, the sole scorer for the game had this to say, "The Valanorans are always a tough opponent, but we played hard and we didn't lose bad so, overall it was a good game. We face the Estopians tomorrow, so hope we do well and hopefully win." The next game is against the Estopians as previously mentioned and they are currently ranked 5th the group and unranked internationally.
