National Under-21 Squad
No less than twenty-one of this young hopeful squad are graduates of one of the two academy systems, Langemark-Poelkapelle or Académie Altafrique, with only vice captain Benjamin Desnoyer and Oumar N'Diaye emerging outside the 'school system'. Manager Ijendu Kambinachi has chosen a fairly experienced squad of home-based players, although like many top Zenegalese players before them, most of this group will undoubtedly seek opportunities abroad in the future. Several key players who Kambinachi would certainly have picked are unavailable with the impending World Cuppet approaching, most notably highly-rated young strike pair Bonnaya and Onouha Zulu, now blazing a trail at Arçon in Saugeais where they are undoubtedly receiving a valuable education. Top young keeper Oscar Igwebuike and winger Ojiofor Yobachi also go to the Cuppet, as does young Starblaydi midfielder and naturalised Zenegalesi Mobi Chiabutu, who has publicly stated he was disppointed to miss the opportunity to return to his homeland to demonstrate what the Starblaydi national team missed out on.
Meanwhile, looking at those included in the tour, a number of names jump out as potential stars in the making, most notably the Cité Castor central defensive pairing of Onouha Paré and Malick Samb, along with Mohamed Ameachi, the captain and winner of a World Cuppet medal, providing Kambinachi with a selection headache at the back. Attacking left winger Christian Diop has already established himself as first choice wide man for his club, Kaba Garage, while up front, Jesús Taghdissi and Chiganu Enyinnaya, both at Galoya-Galere, look more than adequate replacements for the missing Arçon pair.

Expect the Balafons to play an optimistic attacking formation, to exploit mercilessly the oft-held stereotype of naïve altafriquan enthusiasm – this will be most evident in giving away a large number of cynical fouls and hoping not to get booked, pleading naïve altafriquan enthusiastic innocence. Commentators will be guilty of exclaiming “they do love their football in Zenega, but,” - and there is always a 'but' after the patronising opening, and then a chuckle, and then - “they're not so keen on defending, are they Ron?” But the Balafons will defend quite happily, and kick teams all over the park when not in possession, with a smile on their face. Attacking when in possession, strong in the tackle, likely to accumulate yellows and reds, happy – they really do like their football, Ron – but no mugs. Also not very good, never likely to compete in a world cup.”
The squad
Starters in bold
Kanayo, GK, age 20, club Cap-Cayor. A graduate of Langemark-Poelkapelle Academy and a surprise omission from the first team squad for the World Cuppet, a promising keeper much fancied to become national number one in time.
Emile Kpatinde, GK, 19, Facé Vitality. A graduate of Académie Altafrique and a classic eccentric, is already starter at his club where he has enjoyed a strained relationship with the home fans, who don't fancy him.
Chike Nwokeocha. GK, 20, Kaba Garage. Also from Altafrique, graduating the year before, Nwokeocha won a Next Gen title in Erathore.
Noë Chinwemma, DL, 20, Zaire-74. A graduate of Langemark-Poelkapelle, one of only two players selected from the fading giants of Zaire-74, where he has broken through the senior ranks. Disappointed to be overlooked for the captain's armband.
Sopulu Chidalu, DL, 20, Dhara Lions. Altafrique graduate and Next Gen champion, Chidalu surprised everyone by signing for the unfashionable Lions, but it seems a wise move, Chidalu instantly winning a starting spot and the admiration of the fans.
Romuald Yaovi, DR, 19, Cap-Cayor. Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate and a real star in the making. Very definitely looking to move abroad after the tournament, and has his eye on a big switch to a top league.
Abazu Onochie, DR, 20, St. Louis. A surprise inclusion, although Onochie won a Next Gen medal in Erathore with Académie Altafrique, he has not so far lived up to his potential and has struggled to break through at St. Louis.
Onuoha Paré, DC, 20, Cité Castor. An absolute certain bet for a long and successful career as international defender, the Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate is commonly referred to as the 'next Abdoulaye Bocandé'. Alreadyhas a league title medal.
Mohamed Amaechi, DC, 19, Galoya-Galere. Captain. Académie Altafrique graduate, it seems like Amaechi has been around forever, winning a Next Gen medal and even featuring in the last World Cuppet.
Malick Samb, DC, 19, Cité Castor. Completing the trio of excellent young centre-backs, Samb plays alongside Paré at Cité where he has won a league title medal this past season. The pair have a great partnership understanding. Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate.
Benjamin Desnoyer, DC/DM, 20, Kaba Garage. Vice-Captain. One of the two non-academy players in the squad, Desnoyer has to be the most experienced all-round player. A Southern Cynocephalan refugee, the Port Milne FC youth was signed by Tamarindian top side Astillero in their pomp, and played on loan at Boca de Pozo. Came to Zenega during the Fall of Tamarindia, and has taken Zenegalese nationality.
Christian Diop, AML, 19, Kaba Garage. Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate and potential star, Diop is a commanding and lightning fast winger, one of three Kaba players in the squad.
Orlando Boissard, ML, 20, Kurufana. An Académie Altafrique graduate, Boissard won a Next Gen medal and on his day can be devastating, but is something of an enigma, and can become invisible. Kambinachi will be hoping to get the devastating best out of him, but will settle for consistency.
Jideofor Olaofe, MR, 19, Galoya-Galere. An Académie Altafrique graduate with World Cuppet and Next Gen winners medals, along with two full caps already. A very highly rated youngster who is on the fringes of his Galoya team.
Emile Kinnouvo, AMR, 19, Kurufana. A graduate of Langemark-Poelkapelle and something of a late developer. He only just made the grade at the Academy and there was widespread surprise that he got picked up by a top club. But he broke into the first team last season and hasn't looked back.
Ange Kipré, AMC, 19, Mbour FC. Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate. Undoubtedly gifted, Kipré comes with baggage – a wild temper and a strong eccentric streak. None of the top teams have so far wanted to touch him, and after signing for Fortin, he demanded a move when they were relegated, and has signed for the newly promoted Mbour. Manager Kambinachi has shown great faith to pick him, but will Kipré reward him with the good, the bad, or the ugly?
Okoli M'boma, MC, 20, Galoya-Galere. An Académie Altafrique graduate with a Next Gen title medal, M'boma is the steady to Kipré's unstable, and will no doubt feel a little aggrieved to find himself behind in the pecking order. But he will get his head down and work to win a place at the top table.
Obiuto, MC, 20, Zaire-74. The comedian and Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate may not get much game-time, though an undoubted talent, but is an essential squad member for keeping things light and the squad united. Already much-loved at Zaire-74 for his antics, and likely to become a national icon.
Oumar N'Diaye, AMC/FC, 20, Káhone. Another foreign born player, the naturalised Tashingan is also the other non-academy player, coming through the ranks at Tenge Sugar Works in Tashinga before a move to Káhone where he is first-choice midfielder. Also a useful striker when called upon.
Chiganu Enyinnaya, ST, 19, Galoya-Galere. An Académie Altafrique graduate with a Next Gen title medal, one of a crop of young strikers in Zenega who should do well in their future careers. Enyinna is hoping to emulate the stunning success of Bonnaya and Onouha Zulu at Arçon in Saugeias.
Jesús Taghdissi, ST, 20, Galoya-Galere. Third of the crop of foreign nationals in the team, Taghdissi is a devout moslem from Barbary Salé, although he grew up in Zenega and has come through the Académie Altafrique system. A useful pairing with Enyinnaya, these two have developed a good understanding at club level.
Babacar Diallo, ST, 19, Cap-Cayor. Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate. At a time when striking resources have never been better in Zenega, Diallo remains in the shadow of several more illustrious forwards. But they love him at Cap-Cayor, and given half a chance here, he'll prove why.
Chifo Rapuokwu, ST, 20, Sogobe Embankment. A Langemark-Poelkapelle graduate, Rapuokwu is, in some eyes, still trading on a reputation he carved out for himself at 14 or 15, when he was considered the best of the crop. So far, that potential hasn't materialised, although he is by no means a poor choice. But he's going to have to pull something out of the bag here if he is not to be consigned to history as the nearly boy of Zenegalese football.
Note that home-based players are always keen to move abroad where the income is greater, the money is better, and the salaries are higher. Offers via TG.
