The International Baseball Slam is a minor baseball tournament between two World Baseball Classic tournaments. It is also a wonderful opportunity for new nations to roleplay in baseball tournaments in preparation for their participation in the World Baseball Classic.

When daylight savings time is implemented on March 13, 2022, only the American time will have its cut-off time pushed to the next hour, from 7 PM to 8 PM ET, for the last matchday of the Group Stage and the whole duration of the Playoffs. Other time zones will have the same cut-off time.

‘The Corsairs’

Roster

‘The Corsairs’ are a ragtag collection of middle-aged friends and acquaintances hailing from the city of Segeltorp on the northern coast of The Prosaic Union of Gnejs. Founded early in 2022, they’re without any experience whatsoever, apart from an intense series of practice sessions during February. Most of the members are starting to get a grasp of the rules and potential strategies of the game, while some have opted to not get bogged down with such details and rather just focus on their specific tasks (like ‘hit the ball and run from diamond to diamond until you reach the little upside-down house’). They are most likely the most amateurish of all teams competing in the international slam.

Aslak Torp manages and coaches the team, mainly based on videos he’s seen online. He is also the main pitcher and President of the Segeltorp Association of Friends.

BASEBALL ASSOCIATION SREDNJACI

International Baseball Slam XVI

DR Srednjaci do not have a strong league but send their young team to try their luck. The Srednjaci is a young country, although the young one in NS sports has notable results.
Handball, basketball, athletics, wolleyball, hockey and winter sports are very popular. However, with the development of the economy, other sports are also developing, such as tennis, water sports, gymnastics, baseball, football and archery.
Srednjaci is a democratic country with liberal principles towards society and the economy.
Two years ago, in the northern region of Northern Slavonia, a referendum decided to join the Srednjaci. This will make baseball even more competitive with players from that region.
Baseball is still in its infancy, 28 clubs are divided into two professional leagues.
The first league consists of 10 clubs and the champion is the baseball club Optima from Alt Loka, a small place near the town of Kula.
The other 18 clubs are divided into the second league North and the second league South.
Many foreign coaches and players are helping to develop baseball in the country and are increasingly popularizing it among children.
The largest "Jarun" baseball stadium is located in the city of Kula.

Buccaneer Pirates

After winning the Sea Masters, the Buccaneer Pirates were chosen to represent Kriegiersien in the 16th IBS. They are a bunch of Pirates who, if they don’t plunder, play Baseball.
Their strengths are trick throws, hitting the ball and stealing bases. Running is not.

Prof
Is actually the parrot and mascot of the team. But he can talk and is always good for a comment.

Ever positive and coming with a great hitting streak.

Is it really IBS time already? Yeah?! OK! The time had finally come for the 16th International Baseball Slam and you all know what that means...the Battin' Cubs are back! The Battin' Cubs, TJUN-ia's U21 Baseball Team, only managed to win one of their 4 games in their debut tournament over in Hannasea, but this team was created for the sake of development above everything else and so getting results was always going to be on the back burner. Now, the fun heads to the United Adaikes and this time, the feeling is most certainly different.

The personnel has seen a few changes as three of our players moved up the Senior side and three 15-year-olds. Stefan von Shültz gave way to Khin Marlar Tun, Anna Builler for Zingisa Mtyanda and Jason McRae by Yolande Sirapui, who moves up both Missy Jembembe and Kimi Holvanen in the 3-person pitching corp. The other change came right at the top as the Heyrovský brothers came in to take charge of running the team. Both hailing from Nové Čechy in the NAU, the older in Vojtěch is the main man and the one with all the power while the younger Josef is using his skills in data management to find the best successors and calculate the best game plan for any given game. With 5 players on the way out after our final pitch and the Top 4 in our group of 6 making the playoffs, the aim now is simple: Game 6 or bust.

Roster

Unusually, the Cricketers will be represented by a squad of just 15 players. This is because they have an inordinately large number of two-way players, thus reducing the need for a specialist armbarn. And not at all because they’re a cricket roster who got lost on their way and ended up at a baseball tournament.

Catcher: Arjuna Kayal (Bats L/Throws R)
A bat-first guy who’s undersized for a catcher. Has excellent framing and won’t let many wild pitches past, but has a catastrophically weak arm to second, and can be stolen on virtually at will. With the bat he’s an entertaining swashbuckler who’ll go hard at the ball, not always with great success.

Reserve catcher/relief pitcher: Taremekedzwa Mubako (L/R)
A more reliable catcher, with a better arm too, but a much weaker bat, so much so that he can’t really be played at all as anything but an emergency backup. Given the short tournament he should be expected to feature only as a pinch-hitter/sub. He can also pitch, throwing both a mid-80s fastball, and some breaking stuff.

First base: Aasim Wazir (R/L)
Aasim looms, hengelike, at first, immobile and a very poor fielder. Can snag the odd web gem but is hopeless when moving off the bag. His elegant batting somewhat makes up for this: not a slim man, he can put some serious power into his big hits, but can also stroke line drives to all parts. Shambolic at running the bases.

Second base: Malinbongwe Thando (R/R)
A small, quick, natural athlete who’s lightning fast to the ball, chasing down flyballs, diving for line drives, and haring in to grab slow rollers. Quick underhand flick throws and snappy sidearm stuff. He’s a pretty weak hitter without very much power, though, although he is quite fast on the basepaths. As a pitcher he’s certainly no power pitcher but can throw an inning or two if needed.

Shortstop: Alexander Dawson (R/R)
A very slick fielder, albeit one without the strongest arm – as you will see, a recurrent theme with this team. He’s perfectly comfortable making bare-handed plays, sometimes seeming more comfortable doing so than with the glove, and can pull down fierce line drives. But even a routine throw to first taxes him. With the bat he’s a light hitter who sprays it around.

Third base: Aiden Kane (S/R)
Maybe the team’s best fielder, an astonishing athlete who can mix full length dives to snag brutal line drives with speedy scrambles off the bag to bare-hand rolling hoppers. For a third baseperson his arm isn’t exceptionally strong though and he has trouble really zipping it on a line on the long throw to first. Excellent, innovative batter who fouls off a lot, is quick on the bases, and can go yard.

Left fielder: Daisy Arnold (S/R)
A better arm, at least from left. Daisy isn’t the strongest hitter but she’s super fast. She’s really reliable under the flyball and can make most plays in the field. As a batter she’s good when she gets on base, but doesn’t draw enough walks to make up for a lack of real home run power.

Center fielder: Mia Weaving (R/R)
Exceptionally weak arm for a center fielder. She’ll need two cut-off men to reach home plate. Otherwise, Mia is a talented player, who’s speedy, has a good eye for the ball and solid glove, and can hit fairly well albeit without major power.

Right field/relief pitcher: Ashraf Latif (L/L)
While right fielders are usually known as power hitters Ashraf is more of a slap hitter. He can occasionally crank a huge home run that belies his tiny stature, but he’s generally better off trying to put the ball in play. He also has a fairly weak arm, suggesting he’s playing out of position. As a pitcher he can throw with good control and excellent movement, but not too much pace.

Pitcher/outfielder: Darcy McNeil (L/R)
A tall and rangy unit, Darcy isn’t a super quick fireballer, and his upper speed is just the low 90s, which might be tame by international comparison. He’s got a good changeup, though, and excellent control, as well as some variety from changing his arm angle. Prone to balks. Very solid hitter who has as much power as anyone in the lineup.

Pitcher: Ryanard Maidment (R/R)
A pure power pitcher who throws hard. Very unafraid to throw inside and will stare down batters before slamming them between the shoulderblades. A bit erratic. Mid 90s on his fastball, throws some split-finger stuff and a servicable change. Fancies himself a hitter, but that just means he strikes out with extra vigor.

Pitcher: Gul Zaman Mohamadzai (L/L)
A very tall but skinny pitcher who has a decent fastball. His slider has extravagant movement, rumored to be because of doctoring the ball. Wicked 12–6 curve hangs so slow you can practically see the spit glistening on it. Hapless hitter.

Pitcher: Raaid Malik (L/R)
A knuckleballer, Raaid pitchers with extravagant movement that can be as tough for his catcher as the opposing batter. He also has a basic curveball. He’s an entertaining if not wholly competent batter, and a disastrously bad fielder.

Pitcher: Dharmendra Rajkarnakar (L/L)
Another knuckleballer!? Dharmendra has better control but less bite on his knuckleball than Raaid, meaning he can get collared on days when the ball isn’t really moving in the air. He’s a better allround player in terms of batting, where he can get a few hits as a pinch-hitter, and fielder, where he can just about double as a reserve in the field.

Relief pitcher/outfielder: Mahinda Jayaratne (S/R)
A jack-of-all trades who’s an energetic fielder, a capable control pitcher, and an exciting, if slightly erratic, batter. Mahinda’s inventive batting enables him to beat the shift and even hit to the parts of the ground that the fielders didn’t realize were in play, or to strike out in wildly ridiculous fashion. His pitching is possibly underrated, his batting a bit overrated.

An unusual feeling, that's how United Adaikes Baseball Association President Reginald Hope describes United Adaikes hosting the 16th edition of the International Baseball Slam (IBS). The media took his comments on the press interview that convened after the final day of the Review of Plans initiated by the United Adaikes Sports Commission joined by multiple national agencies and private partners for the impending hosting of the IBS in the country.

Hope added, "This will be the third international baseball competition we have joined. In the first two, we were visitors to other host countries. Up to this day, I still can't believe that we are given the privilege to host the second-most prestigious baseball tournament in the world."

United Adaikes Sports Commissioner Pouria Barr has also shared that the country is fully prepared to host the tournament and that minimal changes are left to be implemented to ensure that there will be no disruptions and problems throughout the tournament.

"The President wanted to make sure that all national agencies involved in the planning, preparation, and actual operations, up until the closing ceremonies, are all well-coordinated. President Luke Salazar still amazes me that he scrutinizes even the minute details. From the assignment of national teams to multiple accommodation establishments near their assigned playing venue, the arrival of the coming athletes, the transportation that will take them from the airport to the hotels and their assigned stadiums and back, their security, the security in the airport, in the venues, in their hotels, the whole region of Thraproy, the risks, the assessments, the contingencies, everything has all been planned out," Barr told the press with all confidence.

The Department of Labor & Employment Secretary Saad Walton also gave updates for the tournament. "Not counting the contributions of our private partners, of which we are very grateful for, and not including the government personnel that will be deployed for this tournament, we have hired 20, 000 Adaikesians that will be placed in multiple sectors and groups to ensure the smooth hosting of the country, from security to hospitality management, as well as those to be assigned in venues, and other Thraproy landmarks and venues related to the tournament."

Public Safety Secretary Aaron Yang also shared that the Department will augment about 30, 000 uniformed personnel from the other regions of the country to all three cities of mainland Thraproy to ensure that there will be adequate personnel for law enforcement, emergency medical services, and other emergency response units.

Transportation Secretary Chantel Carroll and National Security Advisor Marian Proudfoot were also present in the media interview but chose not to answer questions related to the tournament.

In an earlier press release, Press Secretary Vikki Boatwright has shared that the President and the Vice-President [Mel Gaspar], both die-hard baseball fans, will be present in the first matchday of the United Adaikes Hawks against The Aháàng Excellencies from Zaambate Te Ahaa to be played in the Millenium Stadium in the New Thraproy Sports Complex.

"It's a surreal feeling," United Adaikes Hawks captain for the International Baseball Slam 16 Emilia Aritza told the press in a separate interview after the Hawks' open practice in the Springfield University Baseball Field, of which Aritza is also the captain of the collegiate baseball team.

"There are 64 permanent member-universities in the UAAUA, and to be selected as one of the 27 players from about 1, 800 collegiate players in the country to play and represent in the IBS is still a dream-come-true for me. The captaincy is just the cherry on top."

But while players are serious on practice but evident in the interviews that they are so excited to play in the IBS, Hawks manager Wynona Hampton is dead-on in making sure to show their best and make a significant impact in the tournament. "It gives us enormous pressure, as well," Hampton shared, "playing in front of the home crowd, we will make sure to give our best when game time comes."

There were several things that delighted the Nkolé when he awoke that morning. First, the breakfast that the servants lovingly carried out to him; secondly, that with his morning wine, he would discover that not only did the Aháàng Excellencies, a team that represented the very natal stages of organized sports in Zaambate Té Aháà, somehow get the opportunity to participate in the Baseball Slam, but it was almost as though this band of misfits had top billing. They would be among the first teams to play, and they would be playing in prestigious Milennium Stadium against the very hosts of the slam itself. He chose his special finery for the day, and said a prayer as he poured the rest of his wine into the earth by his garden. The Excellencies didn't have to win today (though it'd be quite nice if they did). No, they simply had to do alright, and that was all that the Nkolé hoped for in the end.

And, back in Steskia, that pressure, though minimal it seemed, was mounting. They were among the best Aháà had to offer (on short notice) and they loved baseball, but the Excellencies were under much scrutiny from their home nation. Press releases called them heroes; the first Aháàng sports team to travel abroad in near a century, and their first match of their first competition was in the largest available stadium, against the home team. Their morning started with a light breakfast, and heavy drilling after that. And the pressure was not only on for Barsim de la Rosa, who boasted the fastest ball in Aháà, and Lian Hue, who now tested his catching skills with Barsim, but also for the man called Tíupeo, who came with them.

Tíupeo Èsopole was assigned by the Broadcaster's Guild to deliver entertaining, accurate, and pivotal commentary that would be consumed by what he was assured to be every mBaháàï with a television set, and even many without. He was the first representative of the guild to leave the nation in quite some time, and this meant that the impression he made was not only for the Aháàng at home, but for all the world watching to see. He sat down on the bench where the team would be sitting in a mere matter of hours for the game, and drew meditative breaths. This was his show just as much as it was the Excellencies', and today, all eyes would be glued to them. This was Aháà's first true interaction on the international stage in the modern day, and it needed to be seamless.

It was around five minutes before Tíupeo rose again. Watching theplayers warm up filled him with resolve, and a hunger for pancakes. Shortly, he was joined by the coaches, Narjan Tukh and Nathan Rogers, and even faster were his fears eliminated. Amateur, maybe, but baseball is the most serious profession most of these men knew. If there was anybody who was worth representing Aháà, he was relieved to know that these men were likely the best capable. His job was the easy part, Tukh assured him. All it took was one extremely good or extremely foul play, and all eyes would be off him. Tíupeo and Narjan would depart then, for breakfast, as Rogers continued to coach the team through their drills. It was the biggest day Rogers had known, that many of these men had known. They were here now, and by the gods, they were ready for some baseball.

Getting the gang together for the first time

Early 2022. City of Segeltorp, north coast of Gnejs

It was a cold and crisp morning, as they usually were in the north during winter. It had snowed during the night, and most of everything lay blanketed by a thick layer of white gold. The armada of plow trucks had been at it since the early morning hours, and while they had fought valiantly all across the city and the surrounding areas it was still spots completely cut off and isolated from the world outside their neighborhoods. It largely depends on how busy the roads are, of course, when it comes to what the plow trucks prioritizes. They start plowing when there’s just a hint of snow at the busiest roads and they should be completely accessible two to three hours after it stops snowing. Roads with less traffic will have laxer requirements, and it’s not uncommon with a couple of centimeters of snow left on the road after the snowfall has ended. More severe weather conditions will change the rules a bit, for obvious reasons, where the effort is directed towards securing the main roads until the snow stops falling. It had by no means been an extreme night, but they’d seen a lot of snow. Still, most of the city proper was functioning at about normal.

Crammed in the nooks of the crooked old stone houses of the area surrounding Fishmonger Square lay that fairly cosy establishment that Clara K used to run all those years until she died for some reason or another. Her son had tried running it for a while, but obviously that slug hadn’t been able to manage it at all and to save the legacy that one uncle steading in the Interior had taken over. A grim man, he had done little to none in regards to attract customers, leaving the place infested with that rancid smell of decaying flesh and wet leaves that often accompanies someone with a true dedication to the Interior way. His pies were good though. Anyways, he tired of city-life, predictably, and it ended up in the hands of a second cousin from down southron way. Nobody likes a southron, of course, but she did the time and made the effort. And that earned her respect. It wasn’t as good as it had been, but it was decent and she had a habit of vacuuming the sofas, which was a nice touch.

There was a big group seated in the inner corner, by the windows overlooking the inside yard. They took up a lot space. More space than what their combined orders made up for, to be honest, but the proprietor didn’t say anything. She was good like that. The core of the group old friends, the outer circles fleeting acquaintances or complete strangers drawn in from posters plastered around the south side.

The one with the big green and lilac mug was Aslak, and he was the leader. At least he was the initiator and driving force. He was the one with a dream, intentions and ambitions. While currently unemployed he had trained as a house painter and decorator with one of the bigger Segeltorp firms, and he once did the interior of the People’s Chamber down in the town hall along with a few other guys. It was fairly well received, but then again all they did was paint it white. He was seated with his back against the windows and had most of the group in front of him. Lars was by his side on the left, and Lisa sat on his right. They’d grown up together, and while many of their old friends had scattered as the years went by, the three of them had stayed close, although it sometimes seemed the reason was mostly a lack of alternatives.

Lars was a fisherman, like his mother and father before him, and so on and so on for generations. He loved the sea but felt sorry for the fish he violently pulled out of the water, knowing what awaited them on the surface. He never ate fish, but was more than willing to gobble down meat of any other kind. A sweet boy, by all accounts, he had grown into a bitter man. Lisa had a cosy job with the city administration. She worked with statistics in a nice art deco type office and always chewed on her glasses when she tried to look busy. She was pretty smart, but nowhere near as smart as she thought she was. She did simple analyses of labour market conditions and developments, and over the years she had developed a severe antipathy towards those on the outside of the workforce and often scolded anyone without a proper job, no matter the reason. Aslak was an exception. She liked animals in general but couldn’t stand cats due to their lazy disposition.

The plan was to put together a team and compete in the International Baseball Slam. It was a crazy plan, seeing as few of those assembled had hardly ever heard of baseball. But crazy plans were Aslak’s driving force. Having concocted - and failed at - plans revolving around everything from reorganizing the city’s waste disposal management to something dangerously close to international terrorism, Aslak felt assured that he had hit gold with this latest plan. He had developed an infatuation with baseball after coming across a video of a game on an online streaming service while doing research for his ongoing project of debunking something about climate change. The game had captivated him, and lit that familiar spark. It would be something completely new, and he would be the one ushering in the Union to this new era of glory. The game seemed fairly similar to Burnball, and every kid could manage that. The rules were slightly different and seemed somewhat more complicated but how hard could it be.

Burnball

A popular kids game, played on fields or in parks. Often a part of the school curriculum in physical education. Rules varies across regions, but the general outline is similar everywhere. There’s two teams that switches batting and field positions. The batters throw or bounce the ball (commonly a tennis ball) when hitting. The baseball position of pitcher does not exist. Batters can often select between two different kinds of wooden bats, a long and slim version (similar to a small baseball bat) or a short and flat version (like a small cricket bat). Beginners usually go for the flat version. The playing field consists of four bases making up a large square. The size varies. The batting team’s mission is to hit the ball within the predetermined eligible area (usually wider than the playing field) and try to make it around all four bases. If the batter can’t get past all bases, they’re allowed to stop at any one of the first three bases. They can then complete their run during the next batter’s turn. Getting across the fourth base awards 1 point (getting past all four at once awards 6 points). Batting rounds are usually timed and the players bat until the time is up and then the teams switch positions. The field team tries to catch the ball and get it back to their designated ‘home boy’. If the batter is caught between bases when the ball reaches the home boy, he or she is ‘burned’ and may not continue to reach the fourth base and collect points. This awards 1 point for the field team. Catching the ball in the air straight from the bat also awards 1 point for the field team and automatically burns the hitter. Catching it with one hand awards 2 points. If the entire batting team is out on bases with no batter left, the entire team is burned, awarding the field team 5 points, and ending the batting round no matter the time left. Teams usually get two batting rounds each.

Aslak clinked his cup and brought the group to silence. “Hey everyone, and thanks for coming. It’s great seeing so many people interested in bringing baseball to the Union and the Union down to Adaikes.” He paused briefly for effect but didn’t get much of a response. “With this meeting we’re officially founding the Segeltorp Association of Friends, and when we’ve filed the minutes of meeting with the city’s sports administration we’ll be eligible for grants, and that’ll go some way to funding this exciting endeavor.”

A man in the back of the group raised his hand. Aslak pointed at him and nodded encouragingly. “So what’s funding the rest of the way?” Aslak cleared his throat and had a sip of his tea before answering. “Well, Association membership comes with dues, of course, and well, yeah.” The man stood up. “So we have to put up cash for this whole thing?” Aslak nodded and cleared his throat again. “Well, yeah. Nothing major, but yeah. Adaikes is far away you know.” The man raised his middle finger and showed it to Aslak at close range before promptly leaving, followed by three or four others. Aslak looked back at his friends, but they just shrugged. So he continued.

“Anyways. Not much to the Association really. Me and Lisa will handle everything with the city, and Lars will get us tickets and stuff when the money’s all good, he knows a guy who’ll give us a fair deal. Equipment is a bit tricker, but I’ve got a contact down south that should be able to score us some bats and stuff. All you really need to think about is getting psyched for playing some ball come march.”

A man with a red beard and biretta raised his hand. Aslak smiled to him and nodded. “What about uniforms and stuff?” Aslak nodded again. “We’ll get proper jerseys at some point, of course. But it’s a tight budget, so for now I was thinking we could all just play in white T-shirt’s and shorts. The game’s usually played with caps, but I don’t think that’s mandatory. But, you know, bring one if you’d like.”

A woman in the back with her hair tied back tightly raised her hand. Aslak nodded to her. “Isn’t whites a bad idea? I mean they’ll like stain instantly and grass stains are really hard to get out, and we don’t even know what the facilities are like, will we be able to wash them properly between games? And besides, do we really wanna spend all our free time washing?” Another man raised his hands and started speaking instantly, “I’m not going to play in sweaty unwashed clothes. Is it really true you can’t wash your clothes in Adaikes? I’m not gonna go to some third-world black hole without electricity and stuff.” Aslak shook his head. “Washing won’t be a problem.”

Another man raised his hand, and like the other one he didn’t wait for permission before speaking. “I say we go for black T-shirts. Stains won’t show as much. Because even if you do wash them, grass stains are a bitch on white tees. I mean, this is known. Black is better. And then we could call ourselves the ‘All Blacks’ or the ‘Black Knights’ or something like that. We need a cool nickname. Something that’ll strike fear into our opponents.”

Aslak clinked his cup again to regain control. When the talking died down, he spoke. “Black’s fine, no problem, we can do black. But we actually already have a name, so that’s taken care off. Now, I was thinking I could just say a few words about the game itself, because…” Aslak stopped speaking due to a large portion the group waving their hands in the air. He nodded to a woman in the front. “What’s the name?” All the other hands dropped, and for the first time everyone looked genuinely interested in Aslak’s response.

He took another sip of tea. “Well, it’s a good one. I’m sure that’s something we will all agree on. We’re ‘The Corsairs’. Yeah, that’s us.” While some people nodded and seemed content, others were shaking their heads violently and exchanging disconcerting glances. The woman in the front belonged to the second group and didn’t waste any time to get up and start speaking again.

“Pirates? You’re suggesting we play as pirates?” Aslak shook his head. “No no, we’re not ‘The Pirates’, we’re ‘The Corsairs’. You know, a gentleman thief. Someone who steals only from the rich, it with charm and charisma. Nothing to do with the sea. A people’s hero kind of character.” Now the woman shook her head. “That’s not what ‘Corsair’ means. It’s another word for pirate.” Aslak smiled and shook his head again. Before he could respond, Lars slapped him lightly on the back to get his attention. Aslak turned around and Lars said “I told you it’s posh for pirate.” Aslak shook his head, this time violently. “It’s a cool name. It’s just the kind of name baseball teams have.” A man stood up and shouted “There’s nothing cool about violating the laws of the sea!” He was met by shouts of approval from parts of the group.

Aslak slammed his hand on the table and screamed for silence. People were spooked by the intensity of his growl and fell silent. “It’s not a posh pirate. It’s a suave and fucking awesome name. And besides, I’ve already included it in our signup. As far as the tournament’s concerned, we’re ‘The Corsairs’ and there’s nothing to be done about it. Ok?”

The man who had shouted last raised his hand. Aslak nodded and gave him a strained smile. “We don’t have play with a pirate logo or anything on us, do we? My cat was killed by pirates and I refuse to wear anything like that.” Aslak sighed heavily. “Well, I was going to offer to illustrate a logo for us, but I guess we can just drop that.” The man nodded in contentment.

They took five. People got up to stretch, get some fresh air or refill their drinks. Aslak got another cup of Lady Grey. He wasn’t having second thoughts, but it wasn’t going as well as he had hoped. He could feel the paper where he had drawn a fucking awesomely charming Corsair bulging in his shirt pocket. The world would never know. When everybody had regained their seats, apart from a trio who never came back from the break, Aslak started explaining a bit more about how the game of baseball was played. He assured them it was not that dissimilar from Burnball, but didn’t get any further than explaining the role of pitcher (which he’d be occupying himself) before hands started going up in the air once again. A man with a shaved head and a rather impressive mustache got to go first.

“I’ve never heard of someone throwing the ball at you when you’re hitting. That’s not how we played burnball as kids.” Aslak nodded and fished out his bag of lady from the cup. “Yeah, it’s kind of like burnball, not identical to. There are differences and this is one. A guy throws the ball and you hit it.” The man looked displeased. “That sounds way more difficult.”

“We’ll, yeah, but you know that’s why I’m so glad we’ve got a lot of people from the tennis crowd back there,” Aslak pointed towards the back of the group, where a group of five or six people lounged at their own table. “I mean you hit moving balls all the time, and this isn’t really that different, right, so I was thinking you’ll be a fine base for our hitters. You know, the balls are similar in size and there’s a lot of running involved, so it’s actually pretty similar to tennis in a way, so you’ll probably do great.”

One of the women from the tennis crowd nodded slowly, before replying, “The stick’s kind of thin though, not like a racquet at all.” Aslak smiled. “That’s true, but you’re used to that serve, right? That’s a hell of a lot faster than a friendly throw from a teammate. That more than makes up for the bat, I’d say.”

A man sitting by the front windows - who wasn’t actually a part of the group at all, but rather just an ordinary comrade stopping by for a slice of blueberry pie - raised his hand. Aslak didn’t catch it at first, but a slap in the back from Lars changed that. The man got up and approached the group. “Actually, the pitcher is not a part of the batting team. On the contrary, they’re one of the most important players on the field team. That’s no friendly throw. No. Their task is to make sure the batter doesn’t hit the ball.” Aslak smiled and waged his finger at the man. “I’m pretty sure you’re wrong there, my friend.” The man with the murdered cat raised his hand, and Aslak waved at him to start speaking. “Actually, he’s right. Look it’s right here,” he said and handed Aslak his phone. Aslak read the encyclopedia article and cursed himself in his mind for not doing that earlier. He must’ve gotten those games he watched all wrong. “Well, ok, looks like you’re right. But still, you know…” Aslak trailed off and started looking a bit lost.

Lisa knew that look. She got up and patted Aslak on the shoulder, before addressing the group. “This just means we need to train harder, to iron out these kinds of things.” She pointed towards the man with the blueberry pie. “Maybe you’d be interested in joining the Association? You seem to have a good grasp of the fundamentals?” The man shook his head. “Nah, baseball sucks.” He resumed enjoying his pie, and Lisa ignored his blatant provocation. “If everyone who’s interested in joining would please sign on the document here, I’d say we’re about done for today. First training session will be on Wednesday at 19.00 in Sailor’s Park. We’ll provide Burnball-equipment, and we’ll look into securing some baseball stuff from Aslak’s man down south as soon as that grant comes in. Any questions?”

The man with the biretta raised his hand. Lisa nodded to him. “It’s January. Sailor’s Park is covered in snow.” Lisa smiled. “It’s ok. I’ve got a guy in the Parks Department. He’ll make sure to plow the field out by the second fountain.” The woman with a strong dislike for pirates raised her hand. Lisa nodded. “You got a ‘guy’. I know what that means. I for one am not comfortable advancing my own interests on the back of rampant municipal corruption.” Lisa shook her head. “It’s not corruption. He’s not gonna do it instead of something else, he’ll do it on top of everything he usually does. It’s a favor.” The woman mumbled something about definitions of corruption but apparently let it slide.

The man with the biretta raised his hand again, and Lisa nodded to him once again. “So, are we doing black t-shirts and shorts on Wednesday? That sounds a bit cold.”

Lisa and Aslak both sighed.

Sarang Oli, an experienced coach from The Sherpa Empire. He coached the Sherpa national team for three Classics about a decade ago, and while he is known to be grumpy at times, he turned this team around, leading them to the final of IBS13 and third place in IBS14, and another second-place finish in IBS15. His style is not too unusual for South Newlandian teams, with usually conservative baserunning and not obsessing over pitch counts. Oli is going to work with the same coaching team as last time, and all of them are trying to finally catch their whale – winning an International Baseball Slam.

Starting pitchers [*strongest (not necessarily most likely) pitch]

Despite the limited number of games, the choice was made to nominate five starting pitchers. Having been on an IBS Roster is a big thing for the players, and the decision was made that five starters and six relievers should have the opportunity to travel to the United Adaikes.

SP1: Lola Marques (RHP, 21) (Elephant Valley United) *Curveball (starts against Buccaneer Pirates)
Marques was selected with the 13th-overall pick in the most recent LPB draft after grading out as a B-graded prospect. She was selected by Elephant Valley United, where she can learn from legendary pitchers like the great Hillary Angelou (Chromatika) and Jacob Conroy. Marques is revered for her locker room skills and crafty off-speed stuff, however, walks tend to be a recurring problem for her.

SP2: Malinda Drake (RHP, 20) (New Llama Cyclones) *Fastball (starts against San Isidro Labrador Jornaleros)
After grading out with a D-rank, Drake was selected 42nd-overall by the New Llama Cyclones. Her strongest pitch is definitely her fastball, however, she tends to be inconsistent, which could be a massive problem with the few games that an international tournament sees.

SP3: Grady Good (LHP, 20) (Vargas City Lions) *Fastball (starts against Super-Llamaland U19s)
Similarly, Good also received a D-grade, and was selected 45th-overall by the Vargas City Lions. He’s similar to Drake in many ways; he also does have a strong fastball. He is, however, also known for setting a school record in errors during his high school career.

SP4: Wolodymyr King (LHP, 18) (Currently in college) *Slider (starts against Quebec and Shingoryeo U22s)
If he entered LPB now, King would be the tallest (South Newlandian) player in the league. He’s got an overwhelming fastball, but his best piece is his slider, which has enormous movement while still being extremely fast. His generational talent is apparent, and when he ends his college stint to declare for the next LPB draft, he is a likely candidate to go in the first few picks. His inexperience could be a weakness.

SP5: Dianna Rivers (RHP, 19) (Currently in college) *Changeup (starts against Abanhfleft Revolution All-Stars)
Rivers, another pitcher currently playing in college, was also selected by Sarang Oli for her off-speed stuff, however, she is a much more raw prospect, which definitely still needs time to develop.

Relief pitchers

Closer: Samuel Vaughn (RHP, 20) (Ruditown Dachshunds) *Fastball
Vaughn, after grading as a B-ranked prospect, was chosen 14th-overall by the Ruditown Dachshunds. He’s seen as a boom-or-bust type player, with an elite fastball he can pump into the triple-digits on oaccasion; however, if he gets hit, he usually gets crushed.

Set-up: Moriyama Nanako (LHP, 19) (St. Riecarn Saints) *Splitter
The B-graded Nanako was chosen 17th-overall by the St. Riecarn Saints. The southpaw is known to work hard and prepare each opponent extremely carefully. Despite that, she often struggles to get that work onto the field. She notably throws a pretty good Splitter, a fairly rare pitch for South Newlandians.

Primary1: Katherine Peterson (RHP, 19) (New Llama Cyclones) *Fastball
Peterson, considered a C-ranked prospect, was chosen 30th by the New Llama Cyclones. The young right-handed pitcher has a variety of pitches in her arsenal, and while none of them are truly elite, it’s fairly hard to predict what she’ll throw next.

Primary2: Marcia Craig (LHP, 20) (Currently in college) *Curveball
Craig is another player still currently in college, but she’s attraction some attention with her nasty curveball.

Mop-up1: Henrietta Chang (RHP, 21) (Malidridad Mariners) *None
Chang is not actually a very good pitcher, however, she was taken very late in the second-most recent LPB draft by the Malidridad Mariners, and having an LPB contract is better than not having one.

Mop-up2: Guy Cook (LHP, 19) (Currently in college) *Change-up
Cook is cooking up a potentially decent career in college. He’s got solid off-speed stuff, but he’s still going to have to work on the location of his pitches.

Starters in batting order

(2B) Mike Oeland (21, R) (Denison Dynamo)
(Speed: Good | Power: Average | Contact: Good | Fielding: Good)
Oeland was already part of the team that competed at IBS15, back when he was still in college. Since then, he received an A-grade at the draft, leading to being selected 5th-overall and the first South Newlandian selected, joining the Denison Dynamo. He’s a great all-around second baseman, and while he lacks power, he has fantastic plate discipline at his young age, making him a good OBP-leadoff hitter.

(3B) Leo Jiminez (20, R) (Sophie City Monarchs)
(Speed: Bad | Power: Average | Contact: Very Good | Fielding: Good)
Jiminez ascended draft boards after receiving an A-grade, and he was chosen 8th-overall by the Sophie City Monarchs. He might be the best contact hitter in this team, and while he is fairly slow, he is a reliable fielder and great teammate.

(DH) Kelvin Hill (21, L) (Peninsulara Kingfishers)
(Speed: Average | Power: Good | Contact: Average | Fielding: N/A)
Hill is a Kingfisher. He’s also a third baseman by trade. How he ended up here is unclear.

(SS) Vincenzo Beard (21, R) (Sun City Flames)
(Speed: Good | Power: Average | Contact: Very Good | Fielding: Average)
Beard received a B-grade, but fell all the way to the 23rd pick, where the Middle Infielder was picked up by the Sun City Flames. He’s a very reliable contact hitter, but tends to be very impatient, lacking the plate discipline to draw important walks.

(LF) Gena Smith (21, R) (St. Riecarn Saints)
(Speed: Average | Power: Bad | Contact: Average | Fielding: Good)
Smith, a D-ranked prospect, was picked up by the Saints late in the second round, where she now plays as a Left Fielder. She doesn’t have the power you would expect from an outfielder, but she has decent reach and a good arm.

(1B) Vickie Lang (21, R) (New Llama Cyclones)
(Speed: Average | Power: Bad | Contact: Average | Fielding: Bad)
Lang is a third basewoman, however with Jiminez already occupying that spot, she was moved to first by Sarang Oli. This might benefit her, as she never had a particularly good arm to begin with. What she has is great plate discipline, but putting her in at first is a risky move at best.

(CF) Cora Schwartz (21, R) (South Falls Athletics)
(Speed: Very Bad | Power: Average | Contact: Good | Fielding: Bad)
Cora Schwartz was not selected in the first two rounds of the LPB draft and eventually ended up with the A’s. She is almost comically slow, and while she’s an average hitter, the lack of speed still is a liability in Center Field. If she does end up with the ball, she has a cannon of an arm, but she remains a liability.

(RF) Bridgett Klein (20, L) (Currently in college)
(Speed: Bad | Power: Good | Contact: Average | Fielding: Bad)
Klein is a decent outfield talent with a bit of power, but little else. She’s probably not ready to take this big of a step, at least not yet.

(C) Isidro Short (21, R) (Nikcoro Suns)
(Speed: Bad | Power: Bad | Contact: Bad | Fielding: Good)
Short is the other fielder making a return from the last Slam. The pure defensive catcher was selected late by the Suns in the second-to-last draft, and has been warming their bench since.

International Baseball Slam to begin,

Right now, much of Cassadaigua is focused on the big championship game tonight in Quebec City in the Volleyball World Expo, but there are other sports to talk about as well. Yes, the Copa Rushmori will begin soon, too, but right now I want to talk about the International Baseball Slam, or the IBS for short. Every two years this competition takes place in various countries, and when the Matriarchy has participated, we have sent a juvenile team. This is common in the tournament, but definitely not exclusive, so there will be times that our team of 16 and 17 year olds are playing fully grown adults on the baseball field. This isn’t seen as too much of a problem here, because our top players, when they are 18, are expected to contribute at the professional level.

Yes, collegiate sports exist, but the best players don’t waste their time with that, and go right to the pros. So, all of the 17 year olds that you see on our roster are eligible for the upcoming entry draft, which will take place just a couple months from the conclusion of the IBS. Starting pitcher Caitlyn Sutton is the projected #1 overall pick (to the Fairfax Fire) but the nature of this tournament could lead to other players moving up in the scouting systems. This, of course, is how it is right now. It might not be that much longer.

As we are in the midst of season 104 within the Cassadagan Baseball League, there have been some discussions that the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CBL and the CBLPA (Cassadagan Baseball League Player’s Association) will not necessarily be renewed easily after it expires at the end of the season. The big factor here is what we saw in soccer, where the Cassadagan Soccer Association completely eliminated the entry draft in favor of an academy system. This would allow players between 14-17 to sign up with the respective academies of the parent club. There are a plethora of additional guidelines with this system, and this isn’t the place to get it into that, but it is making the CBLPA push for the same thing to happen in the CBL. Small market CBL teams, such as the Fairfax Fire, claim that they would be absolutely devastated by the elimination of the entry draft, and that they could no longer function competitively. Bigger clubs, like the Concord Heights Royals, are far more eager to bring it on, but they are in the large minority of the CBL teams.

The CBLPA also wants entry level contracts to be shortened from five years to three years. In other words, when a player is drafted by a CBL team, they can sign up to a five year entry level contract, and given that teams provide monetary incentives for the five year deals as opposed to the three year contracts, this is what most players prefer to sign. For a player drafted to the Fire like Caitlyn Sutton probably would be as of right now, this would mean five losing seasons. Fairfax has not fielded a competitive team in a very long time. Then, after the five years, Sutton could sign with another team. The CBLPA wants the maximum length shortened to three years because of the way team’s tie a player’s compensation to the length of the deal. Yes, right now, Sutton could sign a three year deal with the Fire, but she would not get the same average annual value, or anywhere close to it, if she signed a five year deal. If Sutton didn’t sign at all with Fairfax, she also could not sign with another team for five years, thus keeping her out of the league that long unless Fairfax traded her rights. By shortening that to three years, that hold up time would be less. However, the CBLPA also wants players who don’t sign with the team that drafts them to be able to re-enter the draft the following season. That is a hard “no” from the CBL team owners. For clarity, I just used Sutton and Fairfax for example purposes. Sutton is not a member of the Fire, obviously.

Typically, the CBA’s have been renewed without much drama, but it seems like we could be in for a major standoff this time. That’s not going to affect the 17 year olds, but the 16 year olds watching on this team, will be greatly impacted.

The nkolé, it seems, was also watching the match, and he spoke approvingly of your commentary. Excellent touch with the bilingual approach."

"Of course. Entertainment must transcend the linguistic barrier. Did the nkolé reall enjoy it?" He cleared his throat, voice shaking slightly.

There were bolder competitors who performed yet more poorly than the Excellencies, and tomorrow is another day to make our grand comeback. They seemed on par. I think tomorrow will be a better day. Tomorrow we will see similar numbers of viewers, and yet even more the day after regardless. You have my word, and you can give it to your correspondent with the Nkolé as well, even if the Excellencies were not pulling in crowds, which they are," Tíusepo added, raising his glass in a toast to all Aháà. San Isidro Labrador does not have a traditional starter/bullpen division in its pitching staff. Instead, it categorizes pitchers by how many pitches they can throw effectively (100, 80, 50, 30, 15). Generally, as you descend from Cienteros to Quinceros, velocity rises, but control and types of pitches thrown falls.

The two Cienteros will start two of every five games, meaning they will appear in games 1-2, then will start the playoff games if necessary. All other games will be pitched by a mix of other pitchers. Mix and match to your heart's content, but do not use Ochenteros or Quinceros as starters/openers.

Try to end up somewhere between 100-120 pitches unless SIL is really getting beaten up on. Examples include:

Players in San Isidro Labrador prioritize versatility and as such, all can play at least two positions. If you RP first, construct a lineup using any 9 (if using DH) or 8 (if not using DH) players playing any positions.

I only ask that two of the four players who have C or 1B listed as their first position appear at those positions in every game (one C and one 1B). You will notice they are each half of a right/left platoon, so use them accordingly.

I would say try to use the players at their top 4 positions, but have fun if you really want to be wacky. The hitting strengths will give you some idea of where to place them in the lineup.
