First we take Steskia, then we take…

“It’s not enough!”

It was Aslak shouting. He’d been at it for a while. All throughout dinner actually. He had started out reasonable enough, but things escalated quickly. It was a kind tribute speech to the team at first. How proud he was of all their accomplishments so far. It had been fairly otherworldly, these days in Adaikes. They were on a roll, no doubt about it. You can never be completely sure about there being some sort of baseball deity, but the start of the International Slam sure made it seem likely. Because it wouldn’t really make sense otherwise. Anyways, it started out nicely, and people were feeling good about themselves. That guy with the biretta had even brought his harmonica and was really looking forward to show off his skills. But Aslak wouldn’t shut up. He rarely did when he first got started. They were used to it, but now things had really gotten out of hand.

“This is just peanuts, peanuts I tell you! The Slam? That’s just the beginning. My plan for this team is nothing less than world domination! After we pulverize anyone who dares step up against us here and leave nothing but ashes behind, we are going straight to the World Baseball Classic and we are going strike fear into the hearts of those that would even dream about…”

Aslak stopped abruptly. One of the infielders had her hand up. He usually responded to raised hands, something they’d learned to take advantage of quickly. Aslak nodded to her and waved his hands as a clear indication of annoyance.

“I think we need to cool it a bit, Aslak. We’re all very happy about how well we’ve done, but let’s not go all crazy. We’ve played well, yes, but we’ve also been incredibly lucky. No, like really, ridiculously lucky.”

Aslak shook his head. “No, luck has nothing to do with it. This destiny manifested. It is known. And we’re not stopping until we’re at the very top of global baseball because…”

He stopped again. Another hand in the air. It was the guy with the murdered cat. His name was Jerry, by the way, and he played outfield by the third base on occasion. Never one of the strongest player, but he had a nice disposition and was well-liked.

“You know nations compete in the World Baseball Classic, right? Like, not friendship associations.”

Aslak stood in silence. But only for a while. He wasn’t quite at that point where he started drifting off. This was just a minor inconvenience.

“So we become a nation! We secede from the Union and establish ourselves as the Republic of Segeltorp. If the Union is stuck in its old ways and can’t see the light and purity of our mission, we’ll have to create our own destiny! And if those fat cats down in Port Kejm even think twice about bringing us back into the fold I will personally lead…”

He stopped talking again. No raised hands this time, just a kick in the leg from Lars. Aslak turned around and looked at his old friend. “Aslak, this is just like that time when were kids and we built that fort, and you got so caught up in how great it was you just wanted to keep expanding it, secede from the Union, and use it as a base for waging war on the central government. It’s enough already. People want dessert.”

Aslak looked at Lisa, and she nodded. “He’s right Aslak. Cool it. Focus on the next game. And let people have their Semifreddos. Ok?”

Aslak cleared his throat and looked at his friends. “Focus on the here and now? Like that mindfulness lady said?”

Lisa and Lars nodded.

International Baseball Slam XVI EVERYTHING Thread

Postby Zaambate Te Ahaa » Sat Mar 12, 2022 8:16 pm

Match Day 4 had been something of an anxiety for many in Zaambate Té áà, let alone the Excellencies as they filed in to begin the game. It was seen as the defining moment. A solid enough performance here would secure their spot in the IBS going forward, but just as easily it could pitch their placement into jeopardy. They wore their home uniforms this time, and perhaps it was the confidence of this that fueled their performance that day. A creamy white uniform pinstriped with black, with a sand-gold cap to top their heads in the morning sun. Many watching and listening at home would later say their home uniform was the true cause of the miracle they were about to witness.

Few were so excited as the Nkolé himself, the soon to be king of Aháà, when the Excellencies scored run after run, hit after hit in a blowout performance. He watched on with his brother and sister, his military adviser, and several nobles, and he cheered with Tíusepo as time and again the Excellences earned a point. Indeed the performance was so good that celebrations at the royal palace carried on well after the final game of the day had concluded. The performance lifted a weight off the shoulders of a nation of dreamers, and of all the team as well.

Tíusepo's life felt completed when he received the phone call for his review that night. As he began his call with his guild liaison, he took his new favorite perch in a chair by his hotel window, overlooking the passersby. "Coming to you live, it is Tíusepo, and if you don't know me, soon you will love me." He answered the call, legs crossed as he smiled ear to ear, ready for the praises being heeped upon him, not even questioning that it was a male voice addressing him this time. He didn't think to ask for a name, nor did he think to enquire about the woman who was his liaison for the past three calls. It all passed Tíusepo by as a blur, as sudden and as reliable as the cars driving below his window. All he cared about was already taken care of; no matter who it was on the other end of the line, they were more than satisfied with his performance.

"I remember I got back to the dugout, and we all started hugging and praying." Recounted Pelor Dan in an interview with an independant journalist moments after the match. "We really did what we hoped for tonight, which was play a truly exceptional game, and create a wide gap in between us and Oscioru on the board." Now it would take a disastrous game for the Excellencies and a perfect game for the team from Oscioru to upend their spot in the tournament, but Pelor Dan was quick to emphasize that they were still going to treat their match with the Cassedeigua U18's with the utmost of care. "We are here to stick it out for the long hall. Comfort will never make us complacent."

After 3 consecutive wins, Dotivia City suffered its first defeat. Our club wasn't play their best game but they are still at the top two in the group.
Today, the team from TJUN-ia was better than our young baseball players.

Batter Up!: So Far, So Good...Definitely

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Mar 13, 2022 6:40 am

After an 11-run classic saw Yolande Sirapui's debut be overshadowed by 8 of our runs, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21 were 3-0 and certainly felt like a different team compared to their debut tournament 2 years ago. Maybe it's that experience that has made this team feel different or maybe Vojtěch Heyrovský had worked some sort of magic with these players and had managed to turn this team into a force through his own means...or maybe it was a bit of both, no one can be sure. This team certainly does feel like one that could be something either here in the Battin' Jags but for now, they had the business of trying to win this group to deal with and a huge step towards that goal would be winning game 4 at Triumph Stadium against the also-undefeated BC Dotivija City U18 from Dotivija in our final group game without the DH in place.

Perthdoches, United Adaikes certainly came out to watch this important contest and they certainly wouldn't be disappointed. This game would be very tight from the start as both starters, Nikolina Lauš and Maddison "Missy" Jembembe, certainly wanted this win and were willing to fight 'til the very end for that dream to come true. The first 7, yes seven, innings of this contest were a deep stalemate where only 1 batter from each lineup, Ante Burufić in the 2nd and Anastasia Mykvinich in the 5th, would make it on base. It certainly was a tight one and once the 8th arrived, this entire ballgame would be thrown wide open as Mara Dumbović hit a solo bomb out of the park in the bottom of the 8th to give BCDC U18 the lead. But we weren't just going to give up after all of that effort and the table would be both turned and crushed in the top of the 9th as Santino Fenatti hit a Grand Slam out of the stadium to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 advantage. Jembembe did the rest and somehow, the Cubs won to go to 4-0 and put the top seed in the group into our hands for now.

Winning that game felt very good indeed, a sign that this team is growing in confidence before our very eyes, and now we had only 1 more group game to play. They would be the Dreamcliff Blizzard, a representative team from the Huron League. We in TJUN-ia have great respect for the Huron, as well as other Native American and First Nations peoples, and we will certainly enter this contest looking to respect their customs and their beliefs. But in terms of the game, we will play them like everyone else and try to do something we certainly didn't think was possible. GO CUBS GO!

It was a battlefield. The cabin of the ship was filled with Pirate corpses. On the ground, on tables, lying, twisted bodies on chairs, drooling, snorting.

Bottles of beverages everywhere. The parrot Prof eating some peanuts, sitting on the ships cat, who was sleeping on Wasnogoods sprawled out body.

Smutje came in, staring at the mess and looking for the captain. He found her with her head resting on a wooden leg on her couch.

“Captain”, he flustered quietly, after he had been able to step over his comrades to come close to her.

She slowly opened an eye. Closing it again.
“Y’arrr good kid, keeping it quiet”, she said.
“What is it?”

“I see you celebrated our victory all very well together..”, Smutje started.

“Why weren’t ye with us?”, Cherry asked quietly, her eyes still closed.

“My allergy against alcohol and so you told me to keep watch, you remember, captain?”, he explained.

“Oh, yes. What is it? Are we getting attacked?”

“No. But, I thought, there is one game left and we should train before the match against San Isidro…”, he began.

The captain grunted.
“We deserve a rest. We train after the next game again.”

“But shouldn’t we make some tactical plans, batting orders, line-up..”

Cherry waved with her hand. She looked with one eye at him.

“I tell you what. You make’s all this plans and I tell ye before the match if they’s arrr good. In some hours. Can ye do that?”

“Yes, of course”, Smutje said happy and exited quietly.

George freed his wooden leg carefully from the captains body.
“Are ye really letting him make the line-up?”, he asked yawning.

She rolled herself around on the couch, seizing a bottle as new cushion, eyes still closed.
“It’s our last match in the group rounds, that doesn’t matter much. We arrrr already first, so I don’t care”, she mumbled, falling asleep again.

INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL SLAM XVI -UNITED ADAIKES

NEPTUNE TARU IN THE AMONG TOP 16

VIDA SRŠEN : Dear viewers, welcome to the show dedicated to baseball.
When we talk about baseball in our country, of course, the first thing that comes to our mind is the champion of the country or, better said, the multiple champion of the country, Optima Alt Oka.
But when it comes to an international competition then it is definitely a united team of players from the domestic league, BLP (baseball league players) Neptune Taru U21.
This team has been successfully competing in IBS competitions for several years and achieved the best result at IBS XIII. In that competition, Naptun Taru, the then generation, played the conference finals, they were among the top four teams.
They have already played in the quarterfinals next season. At the fifteenth edition of the IBS competition of our team, there were no political situations in our country. But Neptune Tara is back this season and is back in the top 16.
This is also our best club representative at international competitions from our country. Not even football, basketball and handball clubs have had such results.
So let’s go a little bit into history and look at the results and statistics of our young players.

When we look at these really impressive numbers, we can conclude that our league is working very well and well with young people.
namely until this competition, Neptune Taru achieved 21 victories and recorded 13 defeats.
But let's actually look at that statistic as well.

In the round of 16 or among the top 16 teams, Neptune Tara will have to play against San Isidro Labrador Jornaleroos. It will be a very interesting match and we hope that our young players will win.

Disgruntled tennis players and communal dining secret behind unexpected baseball success, says coach
By: Ken Skokel

The final results of the group stage of the International Baseball Slam are in. After five games the Segeltorp Association of Friends are undefeated and close Group A as the undisputed nr. 1.

This is odd. And awkward. Because we all expected them to fail miserably. Few of us even knew that there’d be a Union team down there. Honestly, few of us had even heard of this Slam. But when word reached us, it was reasonable to assume that this motley company of northerners would bring shame on the Union. Not only by participating in the game of baseball - which is bad enough in and of itself - but also by being crushed mercilessly and making fools of themselves.

It’s safe to say that’s not what happened. I imagine we were all surprised when that first report came in about these ‘Corsairs’ winning the opening game. But so what. Even a blind hen will find some corn now and then. But those reports kept on coming, and they all spoke of the same events. One by one the other teams of Group A fell prey to the Corsairs rapiers. It would seem like the blind hen has developed her other senses, and despite being exceptionally unfit for survival in a world she really doesn’t belong to, she has found a way.

They’re in the final 16 now. Just think about that for a moment. One more win, and they’ll be playing in the quarterfinals. And closing the group stage at nr. 1 they’re also in a favorable round of 16 position, going up against the nr. 4 from Group D. It’s a team called the Lower Pottsylvania Platypuses, and while I don’t know much about them, I do know that they’ve lost more games then they’ve won so far. Can the Segeltorp Association of Friends pull off another win? How far can they go? How do we feel about that? Why are they excelling in this weird game?

So many questions. So many, in fact, that I decided it’s time to stop speculating and go straight to the source. I managed to track down the phone number for team manager, association president and starting pitcher (the guy who throws the ball to the one hitting the ball, but in a way making it difficult for the hitter to hit), Aslak Torp. He didn’t have all the answers, but he had a few ideas.

PKS: Hello Aslak, thanks for speaking with us. I guess congratulations are in order.

Aslak: Thank you, thank you. Greats days for Union baseball.

PKS: Yes, about that. Because that’s not really a thing, is it? Union baseball? That’s two words that have pretty much never been uttered together since time immemorial. What’s the deal here, really?

Aslak: Well, you know, just because it’s never been there doesn’t mean it wasn’t there, like out there, existing. We just grabbed it and got it safely from out there to down here.

PKS: …

Aslak: Hello?

PKS: Sorry, my mind imploded for a second there. But Aslak, what’s the deal with your track record? I mean, you’re winning against teams from places where baseball is a prominent sport. How is that possible?

Aslak: We’ve had a great run, yeah. I mean, there’s a lot of reasons and things coming together, but one thing that’s been important to us has been getting the folks from the tennis scene. Having a solid lineup of batters is key, and these guys have really put in a lot of effort there. And it shows. They’re hitting that ball like there’s no tomorrow. So, shout-out to Ecpatia TK for letting them use their courts and ball machines for practice. Really great.

PKS: Ok, I see. But are you aware that Ecpatia TK has categorically denied any involvement in these preparations?

Aslak: Well, no, ok. Yeah, I mean, I guess it hasn’t been sanctioned in any official capacity maybe. More of a cloak-and-dagger operation I guess. Still, that’s been key for us.

PKS: Who are these tennis players?

Aslak: Well, there’s a bunch. You’ve got Birgitte, Nikolaj, Jakob. And a few others. Great people

PKS: Birgitte Bringebær? Nikolaj Vollen? Jakob Alner? What, you scoured the north for wash-ups and rejects?

Aslak: Well, I don’t know anything about that. I just know they’re great batters.

PKS: Anything else? It can’t all be underachieving ex-tennis players?

Aslak: Well, we’re a real team. We play ball as a team, but it doesn’t stop there. We’re living the team.

PKS: What does that mean?

Aslak: You know, we eat all our meals together, for example. We do tours and stuff together when we’re not playing. We all live together in a fairly small place. We are not only a team. We are the team.

PKS: So you’re a cult, basically?

Aslak: No, no. Not at all. I’ve been in cults, this is nothing like that.

PKS: Right. Well, thanks for your time, Aslak. And good luck against the Platypuses.

So there you have it. Old tennis people that couldn’t hack it and cult like behavior. I don’t know about you, but I’m not reassured about this baseball thing. But what about the rest of you? Let’s look at an updated poll. There’s clearly been movement, and if nothing else this Slam has made people aware of baseball. While a fair few have gone the predictable and sensible route, namely concluding that baseball is indeed not a Union game, there’s a disturbing tendency of more people being alright with it. The world might not be completely out of order, but I don’t like where we’re heading.

Batter Up!: Undefeated Cubs? Yes Please!

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Mar 15, 2022 12:39 pm

After late drama got us the win over BCDC's U18s, the Battin' Cubs of TJUN-ia's U21s were now 4-0 and claimed sole possession of 1st in Group D entering the final day - and it certainly felt good. From 1 win in 4 to 4 from 4 here in Perthdoches, Vojtěch Heyrovský was certainly enjoying his first tournament in the saddle and he will certainly leave the United Adaikes with good memories no matter what, but he knew that the job still had to be done - no matter how long it would last.

Our final group game at this IBS would see us play the Dreamcliff Blizzard of the Huron League at Triumph Stadium and while we certainly respected the Huron people and their way of life, we had to best them in this game today...respectfully of course. With the DH in play, we would finally get the debut of Zingisa Mtyanda in this sport while the pitching duel would be Leon Bristol vs v Kimi Holvanen in what could be his final start as a Cub. To be fair to our Huron opponents, they did manage to get 2 runs on the board through Matiss Schroeder and Damien Lambert, but considering both Emile Leveque and Artur Xylander had to get involved on the mound, you can now tell how this game went overall. We managed 8 runs on the day, the 2nd time we've done that in the IBS, and everyone was certainly getting involved. Zingisa Mtyanda's first at-bat was a 3-run bomb and from there we had Martina Andrade de Souza getting 2 and Svetlana Mykvinich getting 3 herself.

5-0 and 1st in the group, not a bad IBS return at all for the Battin' Cubs...but now comes the playoffs, where you've only got one shot to make it all count. Our first playoff game in Battin' Cubs history will be up against The Aháàng Excellencies, a 2-3 club hailing from the nation of Zaambate Te Ahaa. They may look like an easy foe to take down, but playoff baseball is infamous for not going the way you want to go at times and caution will certainly be required. We've finally reached the promised land...now, the Cubs will just go as far as they can. GO CUBS GO!

"Faxala hòna, sports fans, I am here live with the jive #5 Barsim de la Rosa. Barsim, also known to the temple as Barsim-the-Spider, how are we feeling after that tense match with the U18s to bring the qualifiers to an end?" The Excellencies had lost. Their w/l record for the qualifiers was 2/3 but that bothered no one, least of all Barsim, as with an RD of totally even 0, the Aháàng Excellencies had completed their mission in the United Adaikes. All the Aháàng Excellencies had to do was prove the nascent Zaambate Té Aháa was a contender on the international sports stage, and everything from this point on was either icing on the cake or a job well done.

"I feel good." Barsim nodded to the camera. He had pitched a solid game, and he usually did, truly outdoing himself on MD4, but it was simply not to be on MD5. "We will not be allowing this loss to come with us into our next match, against the Cubs. Obviously they have a very impressive streak going so far, but the Excellencies are due our third victory. Four teams are going in at Triumph Stadium, two are walking away, and I feel confidet that we will be among them. We have made the statement, that Aháà is here, and we are fighters."

"Barsim-the-Spider, can I ask what you have been named for? Is it your web of cohesion that you cast on the field in your presence?" Asking about someones title in this way was taboo in Aháàng culture, as it could be seen as rude and presumptuous, even in jest. Neither men, however, missed a beat, though truthfully it did irk Barsim a bit. It was a stunt, Tíu's asking this, and he asked before hand if he could, and he agreed, but it still rubbed Barsim the wrong way.

"No, no. I was dedicated in Ólimpíad's name in recognition for my gymnastic and rock climbing abilities, actually." He nodded again, hands on his hips. "Baseball is more of a hobby." He would wink then, and both men laughed, Barsim for the first time breaking his serious demeanor. "But not one I take lightly."

"And lightly it should not be taken. There it is, from the source, the Aháàng Excellencies will be facing the TJUN-ia Battin' Cubs, at 6 pm at Triumph Stadium in just two days. I'll be there, he'll be there, and all the world will be watching. Stay safe everyone, coming shortly is the weather." A highlight reel would play, then, in place of commercials, mostly of highlights from the last four match days, in honor of the end of the qualifiers.

BC Dotivija City U18 8–2 Araznan Rangers

Young baseball players Dotivija City, won the last match of the group.
Our baseball players were better than Araznan Rangers with a convincing 8-2 result.
Everything went according to the plan of our players. There was great energy on the field and from the beginning it was clear who the better team was. This is a very important victory for our club.
Our young baseball players have achieved enormous success at IBS. Our club will play among the top 16 teams in this competition. This is a far better result than our grim city rival Dotivija City Thunders who failed to pass the group in their performance.

Our young players showed enviable skill and ability to play, and with four wins and one defeat, they won a place among the 16 best teams.
The next opponent will be the Cassadaigua U18s, which finished third in Group A.

Player Profile: Jason Saunders and Doug Rose

Player: Jason Saunders

Team: Yarmouth Steamers (Mancunium Pilots, AAA Maritime League)

Position: Starting pitcher

Scouting Report:

Saunders mostly pitched out of the bullpen at Memorial University and only began starting full-time his senior year. He was probably slightly under-scouted as an amateur and definitely underdeveloped. He was originally drafted by the Eboracum Yeomen and headed to L'Anse-au-Loup of the Labrador League to begin his career. For a month and a half, he showed mid-rotation stuff (91-94 mph), then blew out his elbow and needed Tommy John. His rehab was slow, and he took a while to work back up to full strength once he actually returned. His fastball was down in the 86-88 range when he returned to pitch in the Labrador League for a short while, then still a mediocre 88-90 with average secondary stuff as he took his third (but first full-time) turn in the Labrador League at age 23. Saunders worked on himself a lot over the offseason, and when he arrived at spring training the following year, not only had his peak velocity returned (91-94, touch 96), but he had also added a high-80s cutter that was instantly his best secondary pitch. That was his most-used secondary throughout his first AA TPL campaign, during which Saunders held the velo (he averaged 92) and had a healthy and productive season. What didn't seem to return was the control that he exhibited during his early pro career; he walked six batters per nine at age 24, 25, and 26, which caused Eboracum to release him. Despite the control issues, the Pilots picked him up on a flyer and he pitched not so bad for them this year, only walking about four and a half per nine. Tommy John surgery six years ago can't explain the fact that he's just not able to get the ball over the plate consistently. His stuff is pretty good, including the curveball he has as his third pitch, but not so dominant that he can throw it within the strike zone and not expect to get hit. He has #3/4 starter stuff, but his spotty control and almost nonexistent command means that #5 starter or perhaps middle reliever is his ceiling.

Sample outing: June 17 vs Kings County Planters, 4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 4 BB, 7 K

Four walks in just under five innings? Check. Striking out a third of the batters he faced? Check. Giving up only a couple of hits, but all at the wrong time? Check. Throwing nearly 100 pitches in an incredibly short amount of time? Check. This is the Jekyll-and-Hyde look of Saunders. He has really good swing-and-miss stuff, but he can't get out of his own way. He ran up three-ball counts to two-thirds of the batters he faced in this game, and yet, had held the Planters scoreless on two walks and one hit through four innings. But his fifth inning went like this: flyout, single, walk, walk, strikeout, two-run double, pulled. Had he gotten the final out of the fifth, it would have been manageable. Six baserunners and no runs in five innings is hardly a death sentence. But he did give up that big double. He pitches much better with none on than with men on base, but he walks too many to stay out of the stretch that much. To make it in the bigs, he'll need to show that he can really get the walks under control and get deeper into games.

Player: Doug Rose

Team: Shediac Lobsters (Eboracum Yeomen, AAA Maritime League)

Position: Left field

Scouting report:

Rose lost a year to knee surgery at university, so he was an old senior when he was finally drafted, hitting age 23 during his first pro season. He hit .283/.337/.422 across his first three pro seasons, though he spent the first year and a half of his career in the A Labrador League, originally with Newfield's Hopedale Leviathans. When he moved up to the AA TPL, his overall numbers took a bit of a knock, but not too bad. An old college player who couldn't get out of the Labrador League until year two typically doesn't move up much in the system, but the coaches liked his maturity and effect on his younger teammates, so he continued to have a job. He then spent two years in AAA with Souris, hitting .264/.321/.417, which is solid if entirely unspectacular. Newfield released him, which is when Eboracum picked him up. This year, he slashed .288/.345/.436, which was about as good as he had hit in the Labrador League, but he didn't make the majors because Eboracum's outfielders were healthier than average. He has a balanced and well-timed swing, above-average bat control (though he sometimes sacrifices quality contact in favor of just making contact and his walk rate is merely average), and just shy of average raw power. The physical tools are modest, short of a corner regular, especially given that his knee has caused him to miss at least a few games every season, but he could have some kind of big league utility, for example as the weighted end of a platoon in left. His slugging percentage against right-handers has been about sixty points higher than against lefties, and he's hit more homers against them, although he really has gap-to-gap power more than pure home run pop.

Sample outing: May 18 vs Souris Spuds, 2-4, 2 2B, BB

Five at-bats in this game, zero strikeouts. That's a typical game for Rose, whose career strikeout rate is only about one-in-seven, or well below average. Also good for him is that he walked late in the game against a tough lefty, including spitting on two sliders that just missed the outside corner. Earlier in the game, he pulled a double past the first baseman and whacked one off the left-center field fence, showing off his pop to all fields. However, he also tapped a weak grounder to short on a 1-2 pitch that was probably a ball. Rose can and will protect the plate, but that doesn't always mean he's swinging at the best pitches or making the best contact, only attempting not to strike out. And with runners on the corners and two outs in the sixth, he got an off-speed pitch that a better hitter likely would have pulled, unleashing a lot of power for an extra-base hit or quite possibly a homer. Instead, he didn't quite seem to recognize it in time, instead knocking a somewhat-deep fly ball to center that ended the threat. If he can pull more and tap into more power, that big-league job will get much closer.

The first thing to play on the Aháàng Sports channel that morning was not the usual highlight reel, or player being interviewed, or even Tíusepo at all, but at approximately three in the morning, for the first time would be aired the first of many adverts, entitled "Faces of Aháà". A young boy, Aháàng, looks out a window into a camera below, being identified only as "Josiã Odolengu, Sânkot', 12". It was his voice that narrated now. "I used to wonder every day when the war would end," he began, in Maxatanga, being dubbed in both Spanish and French variously.

"Since the day I was born it was unsafe out there. I wondered what would possibly stop the fighting, if they started fighting again as soon as the monsoons were over and the volcanoes quiet. Natural events stopped the fighting, but not for long, and monsoon weather is no good for playing with my friends." It cuts to him and two other boys, identified as "Ide' and Ardu Tohang, 13", standing in a rain soaked and otherwise dilapidated basketball court.

"When the fighting finally reached Sânkot', I thought never to see my friends again. And then weeks passed by, and the gunfire died." A clip plays of Jafir al Razid hitting his first homerun in inning one of MD2, and back to the three boys, now passing a baseball between them. "It was not until I saw the Excellencies playing that I believed the world was safe, and that the world would welcome us despite our hardships. It was not until I heard the Excellencies passed to the Round of 16 that I believed I could do it, too." A clip of Barsim striking someone out in MD4 played, and then one of Felu Tasrapi rounding to second on MD5.

"I never believed in myself, and not too much in my nation. But if they can do it, then so can I. They are heroes, but we are all human, and we are Aháàng." It cuts back to the boys, now full on playing baseball with a group of other friends. "We are Zaambate Té Aháà, and we can survive, do, and build anything. We are the faces of a nation." A small blurb would inform everyone this advert was jointly commissioned by the government and the Aháàng Sports Guild, and would continue to air several times, in many languages, throughout the day.

Rupert was holding up his right hand, showing his little finger and sang:

“One little Emu tried to hit the Ball and Uncle Rupert tossed him the ball but...whooosh and the Emu was:”

“Out”, cried the little Toddler on his knees.

Rupert showed his ring finger.

“The second little Emu tried to hit the Ball and Uncle Rupert threw the ball a little faster and whooosh the Emu was:”
“Out!”.

He used the middle finger.

“The third little Emu tried to hit the Ball and Uncle Rupert fling the ball and whoooshhh..”

“OUT!”

It was the turn of the Index finger.

“The fourth little Emu tried to hit the Ball and Uncle Rupert clever tossed the ball and whoooshhh..”

“OUTOUT!”

The thumb was on.

“The fifth little Emu tried to hit the Ball and Uncle Rupert slinged the Ball and whoooshhh..”

“Out!!”

“5 Out. Your uncle was the hero!”

“Now tell him what happened after that.”
Suddenly Macy was standing next to them, grinning.

“He learned to count to five, that must be enough for today”, mumbled Rupert.

Macy leaned forward to the Kid.

“And then Emu number 6 hit the Ball. Whoooosssh.”

“Out!”, cried the kid.

Macy shook her head.
“Nono. But he was running. And then the next Emu hit the ball and was running and then next until Uncle Rupert was whooosh..”

“OUT!!”, laughed the kid, clapping his hands.

“Yes, Uncle Rupert was out and replaced by Aunt Macy. And then we won the match against StrayaRoos.”

Rupert stared at her, angry.
“That is a dumb game, lets play something else.”

“Yes, how about ‘Whack Dotivia’?”, cackled Macy.

“Tomorrow.”

Pre-Quarterfinals Jitters From Connor Pander

Connor Pander walks through currently deserted Pioneer Stadium aimlessly. The only thing running through his mind is the next game against the MCC Cricketers, the first seed in Division B. Pander has been leading the team in batting average, hits, at bats, home runs and doubles, so far in the tourney, and he says the pressure he feels is immense. "I always feel like if I fail, the whole team will. I know it's not true, it's always a team effort, but I can't get it out of my mind that I'm not the only one on the team. I haven't been sleeping, I haven't been eating well, and I can't feel anything but pressure and anxiety. I- I'm scared. I'm honestly scared of losing tonight, I'm scared of not doing well in the draft. My whole life, the whole - like, mentality around sports has been, win at all costs, if you lose, we're disappointed in you. You need to do better, you can never lose again or make a mistake or I'll find new players. Whenever I had an off day, or- if we lost, as a kid, my dad would yell at me, make me stay for another hour, hour and a half, and I'd just have to do wind sprints. My mom- my mom, she was nice to me, she was supportive and one of the few reasons i kept playing. All I want to say to the community back home is, stay safe, I miss you, I'll try my best. Love you Huron!". Pander runs up the 300 level stairs up and down, up and down, trying to work it out of his system. After a while, Pander collapses on a seat, and falls asleep for a while, just to be waken up by his teammate and boyfriend, Riley Phillips. They go back to the village together, with Phillips comforting Pander and consoling him on the way back. Phillips helps Pander get a good night's sleep, get some food in his system, and mentally prepare for the next day. According to Pander, Phillips has "always been a great friend and boyfriend. He's so kind and funny and helpful and has helped me through so much in my life."

Zaambate Té Aháà, near Nehu Mahi

The International Baseball Slam was the kick that started th Aháàng renaissance, and in a way spurred almost every industry, and it proved necessary to the innovation that the recording industry especially was going through. In order to provide those without televisions the same excitement that their counterparts had, audio devices were set up in the Excellencies' locker room (consentually) to record their reactions pre and post game, a glimpse that only radio listeners would get. As Basaraba pulled his lunch pale from the cooler, he found himself to be one such individual who benefitted from this advance in technology.

"We shut that down. I told you, I told you we were due." This was the first thing he heard, and it caused him to reel back with a type of delight. He swung his legs around the bench and looked, first at the men still working, several men tugging on a rope and standing huddled together to lift a steel gurder into the air. He then turned to three men, all sharing a cigarette nearby him, and shared his toothy grin.

"That's it. That's all." Someone breathed, clearly out of breath on the radio. "That's the quarterfinals ahead of us. Oh, sweetest, winged Niki, we are going to the quarterfinals." A small cheer erupted on the radio, and was mimicked by one at the work site. Here they were, constructing the first real foreign business to set foot in Aháà, bringing the outside in, as they listened to the Excellencies take their culture from the inside to the rest of the world.

"Do you think they will win all the tournament?" One of the smoking men asked, handing the cigarette to Basaraba.

"I barely thought they would beat TJUN-ia. Now, I think they will be winning the next tournament as well." Basaraba took a small drag and passed it to the next man in rotation. "Who knows? Maybe we will be world champions some day soon."

"Its a city sport, for city boys." Foreman Zhigarusa stepped in, looking at the lunching men with a face of complex emotion. "They are all Sânkot' kids, and that is the privilage they get. It is sports for the privilaged, and labor for us."

"Oh, dig a hole, Zhigarusa." Said the man with the cigarette, who then passed it to the foreman. Zhigarusa gestured broadly to the large ditch that had already been dug behind him, and drew attention the workers already leaving. Basaraba turned down the caterwaul of the radio as Tíusepo was wishing everybody a good night, and inquired about the leaving men.

"Yesterday's storm washed out the mountain pass at Tono'Tukhe, and the trucks bringing us the water had to divert back to the town, and there is no more we can do until we get that water. We are taking the rest of the night off, and so on until then next convoy, in a few days." Zhigarusa passed the cigarette. "Come, we will celebrate baseball, if there is no work to celebrate in. I will buy the first two rounds, for everyone but Basaraba."

And as the workers walked arm to shoulder off to the village of Nehu Mahi for a night of heavy drinks, the Aháàng Excellencies walked arm over shoulder to the nearest pub for light drinking. Big things came slowly to the nation of Aháà, but it was always a matter of progress, and progress was always a cause for celebration. "Come back to us in two days time, when the Aháàng Excellencies test their mettle against BLP Neptun Taru. Its hot, its now, and I can't wait to find out-" Tíusepo's excited chatter was cut short as a worker turned the radio off and tucked it into the shed for safe keeping until next they needed it. In the distance, near the mountains, thunder rumbled.

NEPTUNE TARU IN QUARTERFINALS AGAIN

VIDA SRŠEN : Dear viewers, welcome to the show dedicated to baseball.
Dear viewers, we are contacting you with great news from the IBS competition.
Neptun Taru, a U21 team made up of the best baseball players from the domestic league, has re-entered the quarterfinals.
This amazing result just proves that Neptun Taru is one of the strongest names in the IBS competition.
Young baseball players Neptun Taru defeated San Isidro Labrador Jornaleros in the quarterfinals.
Great game from start to finish. From inning to inning Neptune Taru built theirs game and advantage. In the fourth inning, our team did not win a point, the inning was won by San Isidro Labrador Jornaleros, but in the next inning, Naptun Taru won 2-0.
The 6-3 advantage is too big to reach the end.
The final score was 7-5 for our team.

The Unthinkable Thought

The sun was setting over Port Kejm. In the Meridian Quarter most of the government offices were empty, with only a few scattered windows shining a light. One of those windows belonged to the Minister for Culture, Sports and other Charitable Activities (MCSCA).
The MCSCA was sitting at his big oak desk with his back to the windows. In front of him he had his entire team of Director Generals (DG) from the ministry’s departments.

He’d called a late-night meeting because he wanted to get something done. It was the midst of preparations for the spring budgetary constraints conference - where the bigger spending picture for next year was going to be chiseled out - and all the DGs were tired and overworked. But you don’t say no when the minister summons you.

The minister banged his desk for silence, even though no one had said a word. “Boys,” he said and then paused for dramatic effect. He always did that, and it was always awkward because all the DGs were women. The minister continued.

“I’ve got two words for you - base and ball - and if you mash it all up and stir like a good old batter, the kind your mama used to make, god I loved those chocolate chip ones growing up, still do, had one this morning actually. They’re not as good from the store, you need a bakery. But that’s not the issue here, this cookie batter is called “baseball”, that’s what you get from mixing the base with the ball. It’s a game, sports, you know the kind of thing we do around here. I didn’t know about this, but Vidar from Fisheries and Coastal Affairs showed me a video when we were waiting in line to get gyros from that immigrant guy on the corner, god I love a good gyro, nothing to start or end the day like a good gyro. I love food that comes served in something you can eat, no need for cutlery or washing up. Anyways he showed me a video of a Union team playing this game down south somewhere and this thing really resonated with me. It’s sticks and balls and big leather gloves. We should be playing it, so I need you to set up a league and get some teams to play in it. With good names, we need good names, that’s almost as important as the sticks and the gloves. They go under the name ‘The Corsairs’ down there, that’s no good, we need something suave that doesn’t offend people. Like ‘The Bobcats’ or the ‘The Foxes’. Everyone loves a fox, accept hens, but we can’t please everybody. So, what’s your plan? Nina, you’re the lead on this.”

He pointed at the DG from the Department for Civil Society and Sports. Nina took a sip from
Her water bottle and looked like she was trying to collect her thoughts.

“Well minister,” she said and placed her bottle back in her bag. “Baseball isn’t really a big sport here. I’m not sure setting up a league right away is the best move. I mean, most people haven’t even heard about baseball.”

The DG from the Department of Cultural Heritage nodded and continued. “Nina is right, minister, baseball has never been a Union game.”

The minister shook his head and waved his arms in the air while responding. “That doesn’t mean anything. I had never heard of a gyro until last Thursday and then I did and now I love them, I eat two or three every day, and this is just the same, people just need to be made aware and then they’ll see, I mean they’ve got funny pants and run around with adorable hardhats; what’s not to love! What about you Kristina, you’re with me on this one right?” He pointed to another one of the women sitting in front him.

She smiled, even though she really felt like she could’ve been spared this meeting, seeing as she was heading the Department of the Performing Arts. “I think you make an excellent point, minister, namely that people could very well be open to new things. But maybe we should start there? Like an awareness campaign or something? Start soft, before thinking about organizing leagues. I mean, this is not my field, but as far as I know we don’t have any national Baseball Association like we do for the other sports?”

Nina nodded and continued. “Yes, Kristina is right. There’s no central body and building those things are usually made from the bottom up, building on popular interest. Besides, setting up a league would require a unanimous seal of approval in a joint cabinet processing meeting, and that would take time to prepare.”

The minister shook his head. “I don’t like it, but you people are usually right when it comes to these technical things and whatnot. What about this awareness thing though, that doesn’t sound very expensive? Yes, a ‘Baseball Awareness Day’. We’ll drape every street and school - schools are important, we’ve got to get them while they’re young - in pictures and flags. And free sticks! We could hand out free sticks and gloves to people. They would like that, nothing like a good stick. It has multiple purposes. Ok, I’m satisfied. Nina, you collaborate with Hannah and her people down at Cultural Heritage to get his thing done. If it’s not a Union game we’ll make it one, now I need to get down to the corner to get a snack, anyone up for gyros? My treat! Big MCSCA is feeling good today!”

The young players of the Dotivija City baseball club achieved the best club result of our sport when it comes to NS competitions.
In the round of 16 IBS competition, our baseball players were better than the Cassadaigua U18s, beating them with result 9-7.
By reaching the quarterfinals, they achieved the historic result of our sport. With this result, we can only measure the chess national team, but in chess we played as a unified team with the Srednjaci team.
To fight in the semifinals, our players will have to pass the next very difficult obstacle and that is Buccaneer Pirates.
This team finished the group competition in first place of their group. In the round of 16 they beat StrayaRoos U18 Young Emus 6-5.
Can our players reach the semifinals? Of course I can, with a game like this Dotivija City can go all the way to the finals.

The game of the IBS eighth finals between the baseball club Dotivija City U18 and Cassadaigua U18s was watched all over the capital. Over 10,000 fans gathered in the main square in Dotivija City and celebrated the historic placement. Dotivija is finally living the sport and baseball is the reason to celebrate.
Dotivija already had one representative at IBS competitions, the main rival, city rival and multiple champion, Dotivija City Thunders.
They, however,, did not have much success, they did not pass the group.
