Welcome to the WorldVision Song Contest — based on the Eurovision Song Contest, WorldVision aims to provide and unite nations from different parts of the world through music.
The WorldVision Song Contest is an outlet where you can showcase the popular, native, alternative and various other genres of music of your nation. As with every contest, there are a few simple rules that you'll need to follow if you wish to participate. If you're new here and want to get to know how things go, read our FAQ/Guide To WorldVision! Or if you are simply looking for the rules, look no further than the rules here:
WorldVision Rulebook
For brief explanations on different aspects and workings of the contest, you can see them here below:
The Handy Guide to WorldVision!
‣ I'm new here, how does this all work?
Welcome! Here at WorldVision, we write our own lyrics to existing songs, and then vote on them! Many of us write performances and background information on the performer as well. This contest is based heavily on the Eurovision Song Contest, so it helps a lot if you're familiar with it! One major difference from it is that the winner doesn't host the next contest- here we have people bid each edition to host the next contest.
‣ That sounds fun! How do I sign up?
Signing up is simple! You can fill out and post the application below, or simply state your interest in joining. If you do use the application, you don't need to fill everything in.
When signing up, please ensure that you post your sign ups independently if you are participating with a puppet nation, and declare to who the puppet belongs to! Do not confirm your puppets solely through your main nation.
Here is a simple and basic template you can fill out for starters, though you are not obligated to do this:
- Code: Select all
Nation Name: Your nation's name goes here.
Participating Broadcaster: Your official broadcaster for WV goes here.
Song Title: The IC Song title goes here.
Artist(s)/Band Name(s): The name of your act goes here.
Tune: The real-life tune you're basing your song on goes here.
‣ How can I host a contest?
In order to host an edition of the song contest, you need to have fully participated at least once before, this is crucial to know how the contest runs and once you've completed your first participation, you may proceed to bid. While you wait, you can look at any of the former or currently proposed bids to learn what make up the elements required to present in order to bid to host the contest, bids may vary in the things they present, but submissions with a lot of presentable content and preparation made beforehand are your key to making a successful bid, so take your time to craft the perfect edition.
If you've signed up before host voting has begun, then you can vote for the host! The bid with the most votes will host the edition. Bids which have not won may be resubmitted again next edition.
You CAN NOT vote in a host election if you have submitted your own bid in the same edition.
‣ How do I write an entry?
Writing an entry is just a bit more work than Alexander Rybak makes it seem. Most of us use an existing song as a tune, which we usually link through YouTube, and rewrite the lyrics to the tune so that they are original — which means that we wrote them ourselves and did not copy the real lyrics (at least 80% should be your own, which is generally easy if you write your own from scratch), lyric translations do not count as original lyrics!
To do well, it's best to write a performance and choose a tune that hasn't been used before - don't be afraid to ask us if you're unsure! In addition, it's always good to look at past contests and learn from the winners and highest placed entries.
If you do post a reservation/placeholder post for your entry, please make sure that you finish it with a completed set of lyrics, along with the name(s) of the performers and the song title. If you don't finish your entry, or you don't declare your withdrawal on the OOC thread beforehand, you may receive a strike, which is explained in the spoiler above this section.
‣ The deadline passed, and there's a mistake in my entry! Can I fix it?
Don't panic! First, check if the review period is still ongoing. The review period is the 12-hour period after the host posts their cutoff (usually in the form of a scoreboard or interval act) on the IC thread. During this window, edits are allowed to lyrics and RP, but new posts are not allowed and entries must have a full set of lyrics before the period begins to enter the contest.
However, if the review period has already passed, things are a little more difficult. It depends on what is required to be edited – if the edit is a simple grammar, spelling, or formatting correction, you can let the Committee know and we'll let you edit your entry. Big alterations – such as substantial alterations to lyrics or changing sections entirely – are not allowed. If we notice that someone has altered their entry too substantially or without prior acknowledgement or approval from the Committee, the entrant will be at risk of being disqualified.
‣ So what comes next? Voting?
Yes, that's right! You may post your votes after the review period ends – exactly 12 hours after the cutoff is posted. Just like in Eurovision, you give 12 points to your favourite entry, then 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and finally 1 point to your next favourite. Please vote on time! The host may choose to close voting after the deadline, but if you do not vote, or have a full vote readily posted on time, you will be disqualified. Unlike posting entries, 'reserving' a spot for your jury points is not permitted.
Next, you do the televote. Here, it means that you fill out the form that is linked by the host or the committee, and rank each entry from 1 to 10, with 1 being worst and 10 being best. Ever since the official implementation of the televote since the 83rd edition of the contest, everyone's televotes will be revealed by the Committee, so you can see the full breakdown of the voting sequence (both televote and jury) after the contest ends. We use a weighting system to calculate the televotes - this will be changed at the discretion of the committee if the number of 0's exceeds 10% of participating nations (this will be done only for those nations with a score of above -10).
‣ Can I enter the contest with puppet nations?
You can! You may enter a second nation, but make sure you confirm that it is yours in the signups! However, with great power comes great responsibility: you can only give a maximum of 5 points to yourself in the jury vote, and together with your main nation you can only give a maximum of 14 jury points to another nation, so please double check before submitting your votes to avoid inadvertently giving a nation too many points than allowed or two sets of points (ex: Country Y giving 7 points AND 2 points to Country X).
‣ I do not feel safe or welcome here. What do I do?
If you are bullied, harassed or intimidated by someone who is participating in the contest, please contact the Committee or the members individually, and we will ensure confidentiality while we take on to analyze your situation. We will confront the individuals in question and take appropriate action on the basis of their actions, if the harassment happens or persists outside of the contest, we recommend you report the individual to NationStates moderators.
‣ I didn't have my question answered! Who or where do I ask?
If you have more questions, you can freely ask in this OOC thread, we also recommend joining the Discord server linked at the top of this post as we can assure more active responses there, or simply telegram the WorldVision Committee. It helps if you add the Committee's individual member names (Carrelie, Elejamie, Malta Comino Gozo, Rugenia, and Ugunnustan) in the "To:" box along with "WorldVision Committee" for better chances of a faster response as some members may reside in farther time zones.
To summarize; be original, fair and don't be a jerk to others and we'll all have fun. If you have any questions or concerns about the contest, entries and so forth, please feel free to telegram the Committee.
Even if you've missed the deadline or aren't participating, feel free to discuss the contest in this thread or post broadcaster commentary in the IC, we do love some good commentary nowadays. Furthermore, you can participate in the RotW vote if you have participated previously and/or are a full member of the IBA. (For this, see the information in the 'televotes' explanation listed above.)
With all that said, welcome to WorldVision!
