You do realise that without the Suez Canal, you can't move your navy inside our outside the Mediterranean from East Africa, Asia, or the Middle East without having to go around all of Africa right?

I can easily force my way through that canal, or pay for military access. Egypt from 1949-1960 had a very weak military, (at least weaker than the British Military) so I could just occupy it.

The Suez canal is the single most important asset the british have... by far. i cannot express in words how important it is to maintaining a global british empire, if you lose access you are fucked. You want to sell it off thats one thing, but you NEED access

According to how I'm deploying it: there are a total of 150,000 troops and 1,000 tanks in Africa. 35,000 troops and 250 tanks heading by sea to the Suez Canal, about 15,000 troops in a military base 10 miles to the southwest of Cairo, 80,000 troops and 600 tanks in Libya, and 30,000 troops and 150 tanks dispersed in the South. This will be it until I find some actual numbers on British forces in Africa in 1949

you have the defenders advantage plus an army much better trained and full of veterans. You have an advantage in armor, technology and offshore battleship support. The egyptians would be slaughtered

There are some counters to a few of these factors: Armor: I would have to hold the cities of Port Said and Suez, making armored support near-ineffective
Defensive: I would have to spread my forces along both sides of the canal, as they control the mainland and the Sinai Peninsula. With only 35,000 troops in the area, I would be stretched near thin.
Naval Support: Danger close= don't fire, plus we won't cause civilian casualties in Port Said and Suez. Meaning that these 2 cities would have only naval air support.
