As is man, him, and he. I guess because it's in reference to human and not man. And because English Grammar Nazis hate the singular they as a gender natural term because it's "supposed to be plural" and calling people "it" is rather rude in my opinion.

I've been dubbed the Grammar anti-christ before, and I've never had an issue with the use of the singular guy XD that's perfectly valid. But he and him definitely aren't gender neutral in my opinion.
