OOC: Mostly for the heck of it and to highlight Baizou's convoluted policymaking system. I figured Marxists and Libertarians being in coalition together would be immediately odd and set the tone nicely. It's also some wish-fulfillment; the most unrealistic thing about Baizou might not be the sentient VHS tape, but rather the idea that political factions might 1. be basically sensible, regardless of ideological differences; and 2. set aside their differences in order to work toward a common good.

Why is English Nacrad's main language?

It has 2 main reasons.

1. Nacrad was a British colony from 1579 onwards (1631 for the greatest extent of the colony), and was subject to heavy Anglicization, hence you can see that some place names are English names. Due to the large British population that was sent here, who in turn integrated themselves with the natives, the British influence is exacerbated.

2. Nacrad is home to about 10 different Sinitic groups (OK, just 3 if you want to be brief, but each of the groups have sub-groups) that speak different languages across three language families, namely Cantonese, Hakka and Min-nan. In the Qin Dynasty, while the writing system is unified ("From now on, the world will write the same script"), the pronunciation is not unified. If the federal government wants to not piss off any one of the groups, it would be wise to use something that's not Sinitic, for fear of favouring any specific sub-group. And English is the most convenient language.

since I've forgotten this thread until lately I'm going to answer a question that I never answered - a very very long-overdue answer:

How did Feyrisshire's name come about, and I mean this OOCly. Was the idea of it being James Cook's misinterpretation always a thing, or did that come about later?

The idea of "Feyrisshire" came first before the name, there was already a Feyrisshire before a Feyrisshire. It can be gleaned in the Factbooks that its names long ago were actually that: Danschen. The conlang was already there before its name came about. How did it came about? Feyrisshire came from "ryeifinsshira" - "Ryeifins" is the Feyris word for "faeries" and "shira" for land. Therefore - "land of the faeries."

The idea of it being James Cook's misinterpretation indeed came later OOcly, but it was to justify how did a nation with a conlang of its own came to have an absurdly English name. "Feyrisshire" simply sounds so convenient because it sounds so close to the English words "faeries" and "shire". James Cook's misinterpretation did have an RL precedent, a telephone game of the native words was actually how the names of RL Japan and Korea were formed.

Define custom made.

Basically everything I use is, in some way, made or edited by me. That doesn't mean that all of it's entirely original - while I try to actually draw what I can, I oftentimes end up gluing together existing graphics to get what i need. Time taken to make them varies, but is typically no more than half an hour per logo. If I need to make multiple variations of the same thing (e.g. the Construct icons, SPU markings, etc) then obviously subsequent ones will take far less time than the first, since I'll have made a template for them. Certain bigger or more complex graphics may take longer - mostly custom banners and those big ole wallpaper-looking things i have floating around in the occasional project factbook.

That's because it isn't actually called "Froggy City", it's an English toponym. Its real name in the Feyris language is "Puraggawsen", which is... the name for a species of frog endemic for Feyrisshire, and "Froggy City" is just as good as a translated name. (Lots of words in the Wikipedia Factbooks are toponyms).

As for why its named for a frog - the area around it is always known for having lots of frogs. "Puraggawsen" is also a legendary frog in Feyris folklore. It is said that High Princess Shiori have a pet frog that can speak and talk. The frogs Puraggawsen has always been prominent in Feyris culture, shopowners put in frogs for good fortune. The city - which was actually a modern city, built by the Communist Party in 1961, is dedicated to him, the frog.

Both, although armed conflict doesn't mean the typical 'civil war' sense. Warfare is too resource-intensive, both in terms of manpower and regular resources, and most communities would prefer to use those resources on other projects, so any fighting tends to take the form of ritual war games (hint-hint in my hub) or combat duels. Traditional armed conflict isn't very common, due to the above resource reasons and the "Bigger Coalition Diplomacy" factor - when things start heating up too much, the Desertists also aren't afraid of intervening, openly or not.
There are also plenty of non-violent ways of conflicting, such as the ĝusteco or through an assembly within the General Council.

There's no specific inspiration beyond my growing up watching movies on VHS. I have a friend who really likes robots and AI, so that's probably why I wrote CARRIE into Baizou's story. But besides that, I just sort of thought up the idea. I ended up learning about stuff like lo-fi music, citypop, and analog punk after creating Baizou's videocassettepunk, and I've incorporated a lot of those kinds of ideas into the aesthetic and atmosphere I imagine for Baizou, but they're after-the-fact additions, not inspirations.

1) HOI4 and Stellaris, solely because a) TNO is a HOI4 mod and I'm just really fond of TNO's unique method of storytelling, and b) Stellaris is just far more customizable on a macro-level, even if I hate the micro-level gameplay. It also lends itself to more emergent narratives. I'm the kind of guy who used to play Civ games on marathon length solely for the narrative that created, so it makes sense I'd be more into their more narrative games. Honestly I haven't played many Paradox games, to be completely honest with you. I'm sure there's better titles out there than the basic af ones I've picked.

2) Yes, right now. I'll get right back to you when that particular existential crisis ceases.

3) MT liberal democracies and FTwank chonker empires, and all their associated details. I don't care about how a parliament is structured or (with a few exceptions) the exact ORBAT of some massive fleet and the odd physics that enable it to exist; I care about making a nation I can tell a story through that interests me. The latter of those two archetypes I might bend on, but as a rule if it's been done to death before in a way I can't spin in a unique way I'm not too interested in it. I much prefer the little details- writing things with nitty-gritty knobby bits I can get into, and lots of dirt and grime to mess shit up with. Considering my ideas for PALISADE include "nomadic corporatist psychedelic cult with literal militias for its armed forces and an emphasis on civic duty", "an Afrikaner dude in spaaaaaace! and his Sears Catalog neocolonialist playground," "Operation Enduring Freedom but overseen by a corrupt ex-military junta beholden to foreign interests", "robot farmers playing Terminator for the hell of it", and "just some dude's college course", I think you can tell I'm not too interested in working in things I can't make weird. I definitely make exceptions to that rule, but at the moment I'm on a real micro-level design kick, and I don't see it ending any time soon.
