Daily Question #14: Future?

Funny you should ask this, I really don't know! I never went into making Grand Emilia with any grand designs, I just wanted to play NationStates again!

I want people to remember Grand Emilia as the people of Grand Emilia would, as a clearing of safety in the dark abyssal forest of the Atlantic. Grand Emilia is not a superpower, it's not trying to tip the world in its favour. Grand Emilia should serve as proof that a nation can thrive off of kindness, rather than simple-minded conquest or sociopathic Byzantine-level espionage. Life deserves to be good for all, and I want Grand Emilia to act as a beacon of that philosophy.

Of course, this world isn't perfect. As such, not everything in Grand Emilia can be easy breezy. That's saved more for whatever happens during roleplay, however. Whether Grand Emilia begins to collapse in on itself, or the world bends to its ways, that's down to however things go with the adventures of the Caretaker and her ministers.

Let's hope for the best, shall we?

Daily Question #14: Future?[b]
[b]What is the future of your country?.
To be clear: The question is directed at you, what are your reallife goals with the nation (OOC) and at you, what does the future of your country look like from an RP perspective (IC).
So: what are your goals with the nation? How do you want to leave a lasting impression on NS?
And: how is your country likely to go down? Are there any major political changes looming for your country right now?

I'm planning on actually establishing internal lore and making something work. I remember that Donjon had a fractal world generator, which I will use, and then I'll hopefully make a climate map from that, and then I will begin fleshing out my nation and its neighbors.

My coat of arms

Postby Scraponia » Mon Oct 17, 2022 11:41 am

The coat of arms a beaver holding a compass in its hand and a sword in the other: progress and self-defence, as well as strenght. Parva gravitas is a recall of the motto, which indicates the care-free attitude of the citizen, accepted after the Great Burnout that happened during the frantic settling, so the scrappos learned to take things with more joviality.

https://imgur.com/a/zKfHpZ4 (you'll have to open the link because the forum does not allow me to post images.)

The octagon is because of the hope of national regeneration that may hopefully happen. The red and yellow represent the energy and passion of the people when partying AND working. The beaver looks up and to the right in the sense that they are looking away from sinister prospects and up to better things.

(Starting from the center) Crossed Horseshoe and Hammer: Symbol that represents the working classes of Equus: the peasant who works the land with his own hooves and the city worker who uses his tools for the construction of socialism. Their union represents the joint solidarity of the two classes.

World of Equus under the Horseshoe and the Hammer: the World Revolution that will triumph all over the globe.

Red Star: represents the five social groups that contribute to the transition to socialism: young people, the military, workers, peasants and intellectuals.

Dawn: Symbolizes the new future facing the world and the hope of the working classes to free themselves from oppression.

Ears of wheat wrapped in red ribbon: it symbolizes food for the people, as well as the hard work they have to get it. On the tape is Caramel Marks' famous motto in various languages: "Proletarians of the world, unite!"

The coat of arms was adopted in 1842. Paragraph 1 of Article 433 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Veraguas (Constitución Política de la República de Veraguas) describes it thusly: "of circular form, which is described as a palm branch intertwined with an olive branch at the vertex and open at the upper part, with a star placed in the center and an inscription on the border edge which reads, "República de Veraguas"."

Daily Question #15: A seal is on the seal!
What is your nation's coat of arms.

The imperial seal of Tangatarehua is the Whetu o Puanga or 'stars of Puanga' emblem, which like the nation's flag contains a view of the constellation Orion as viewed from the southern hemisphere due to its importance in Rehuan mythology. Puanga (daughter of Rehua, the star god) is the top star and all Empresses are believed to have been descended from her.

Image

The imperial seal is only ever used by the Empress or the Imperial Household Agency and never by the government or civilians - but it does appear on the passport of Tangatarehua. Misuse of the symbol is considered a serious crime.

Between 1779 and 1979 Te Mata o te Pakanga ("The Face of War") was used as the coat of arms for the Imperial Tangatarehua Army and Navy, featuring the image of a mythical Taniwha above two crossed Taiaha in a symbol somewhat resembling the western skull and bones symbol, and as such designed to instil fear into those who saw it.

Image

The symbol was co-opted by Te Huinga Rangatiratanga o Tangatarehua (the Tangatarehua Imperial Rule Association), the fascist ruling body between 1943 and 1979 and was even added to the national flag during that period.

In modern times the symbol is considered extremely controversial and there's even talk of banning it, as it's today considered Tangatarehua's equivalent of the swastika and was a symbol under which the nation committed terrible atrocities throughout the 20th century. Today it is used almost exclusively by the far right.

Absolutely not, they'd given help for their mental illness but under no circumstances would a split personality be given legal recognition.

While Grand Emilia's NHS provides aid and assistence to these kinds of people every day, citizenship is recognised based upon a person's observable body. This is purely for bureaucratic ease, rather than any particular motive.

Yes. There is no such thing as "illegal immigration" in Diaboland. All you have to do is step on our land and you're a citizen now. Our citizenship laws are extremely relaxed, so I don't see what the problem is. Super interesting question by the way! Really got me thinking

Daily Question #17: The secret rulers …
How massive are domestic and international companies in your nation?

Since 1979, successive governments of Tangatarehua (particularly the Liberal government of 1982 - 2000) have been aggressively pro-business and have pursued policies designed to allow the rapid expansion of commerce and industry as well as attracting foreign direct investment or allowing multinational corporations access to the market with minimal barriers.

This semi-corporatist economic policy has largely been credited for Te merekara ohaoha (the "economic miracle") of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s which saw Tangatarehua rapidly transform from an impoverished, war-torn state with severely damaged infrastructure into a nation whose living standards are comparable with the west.

The economy of Tangatarehua is dominated by four types of business:

  • Kaporeihana ke ("Foreign Corporations"): These are the multinational businesses that have subsidiaries or operations in Tangatarehua with a handful even registered in the nation due to favourable tax policies. Working for these companies is sometimes seen as a gamble - they tend to pay the highest salaries of any job in Tangatarehua but have less regulation and therefore less job security. Occasionally domestic companies that are publicly traded on the stock exchange are considered Kaporeihana ke, as it's impossible to prove whether such a company is owned by domestic or foreign shareholders.
  • Rōpū pūtea nui (Domestic corporations, literally: "Large financial clique"): Rōpū pūtea nui refers to a series of horizontally or vertically integrated conglomerates that are privately owned or controlled by the nobility. These companies are almost always controlled by Toa, the former warrior class and their influence is considered a modern form of feudalism. They are usually given extremely favourable tax and regulatory conditions by the government, however unlike western corporations these companies are less focussed on economic efficiency and more on providing social benefits. For example, it is expected that a worker at one of these companies will be employed for life and that the company will take care of elderly family members and pay for children's education, etc.
  • Hinonga Emepaea ("Imperial Enterprises"): This refers to both state-owned companies such as Ara Tereina o Tangatarehua [Tangatarehua Railways] and companies owned by the Imperial family. These companies usually function similarly to Rōpū pūtea nui, however it's common for these companies to be monopolies or provide important services but run at a loss, requiring taxpayer subsidisation. Some Hinonga Emepaea are basically just government departments (such as the Imperial Reserve Banking Corporation, or the Imperial Tourism Corporation) running independently under license due to the way that Tangatarehua's government is structured. Others are for-profit but considered culturally significant, such as Te pakihi waipiro
(literally: "The alcohol company") which is owned by the Imperial family and is the only licensed producer of traditional Rehuan sweet potato vodka.
  • Pakihi Kaiahu (Small Businesses, literally: "Peasant Business"): These are what they say on the tin - they're the small mom-and-pop stores you see on every street and include grocery stores, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Supermarkets, for example, are not common in Tangatarehua and many have been broken down into various Pakihi Kaiahu as a way of safeguarding this sector of the economy. Small businesses play an essential role in the government's economic strategy because they help absorb unemployment, preserve local culture and tend to liven up areas that might otherwise be at risk of falling into depravation and urban decay. Pakihi Kaiahu are a major contributing factor to why the size of Tangatarehua's retail sector is ranked in the top 1% of the world.

The close relationship between government and corporations is regularly scrutinised and does occasionally lead to corruption, such a the recent notorious case of a former Prime Minister using his influence to benefit a corporation he had invested in.

Generally however, this relationship is considered an important symbiotic relationship because in the early post-war years the government relied heavily on corporations to rebuild the nation's infrastructure as well as provide social welfare at a time when the government was still too weak and poor to do so itself.

Daily Question #17: The secret rulers …

Over the years, Grand Emilia and the Commonwealth Council have had an uneasy job with maintaining the balance between the power of the council and the free reign of corporations within the country. The current faction of the Council in power, Emilians for Progress, isn't strictly anti-business, but they certainly prefer corporations, especially foreign ones, having as little influence as possible.

The largest business in the country is the main chain supermarket, Calico (Often stylised as CALICO). Founded in 1938 as a market stall in Emborough, the company has managed to work through Grand Emilia's rigorous system, being on good standing with the government without either having much influence on the other. The company operates about 70 different locations across the country of varying sizes.

The biggest foreign company in Grand Emilia is, unsurprisingly, McDonalds. Their grasp on the nation is tightly contained. As such, they lack the influence they do in other countries. They only maintain 10 restaurants throughout Grand Emilia, about one per major settlement.

Daily Question #17: The secret rulers...
How massive are domestic and international companies in your nation?

The Emerstarian government levies a tax on businesses for their number of locations. The rate of this tax increases as locations increase, and as a result, it becomes far more expensive for businesses to own and operate many locations than to own and operate just one. By this and other means, including laws that are intended to distribute ownership as widely as possible and to promote local ownership of the means of production, the size of domestic companies in Emerstari is inhibited, few being as large as many companies are in other countries. Further, international companies' presence in Emerstari is inhibited by laws against foreign ownership of land and high tariffs directed against certain products that may readily be made domestically — ships, steel, lumber, foodstuff, clothing, furniture, etc.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. A few companies, which are publicly-owned, are exempt from Emerstari's anti-monopolistic laws, such as the Royal Post — the sole mail carrier in the country, which has been granted a monopoly by the Crown — and the Royal Railway Corporation, which owns and services the railroads of Emerstari. A private exception was formerly the Fyrlandish Trading Company, which was granted a monopoly from the Crown over the fur trade in Fyrland in 1797, but this charter was eventually revoked in 1860, and the company was dissolved in 1868 after new competition took its profits. Though not technically companies themselves, the Shipbuilders' and Steelworkers' Unions operate similarly, and have seats in the national parliament, along with other unions — or, in the Emerstarian term, gildar.

The Shipbuilders' and Steelworkers' Unions helped develop the worker-cooperative system used in most Emerstarian shipyards and steel mills today, and they have been powerful forces behind Emerstari's high tariffs on imported ships and steel. At the same time, however, the Steelworkers' Union has sometimes opposed the environmental regulations advanced by other groups in Emerstari, including in addition to environmentalists, fishermen, homeowners, and beachgoers. Speaking of the fishermen, they too — and others — through their unions or guilds, have seats in the Emerstarian parliament. Prominent groups besides those already mentioned are the lumberjacks, miners, and physicians. Not only do all of these unions have representation in the legislature, but they often devise their own regulations internally.

Daily Question #18: BANHAMMER!!

Unfortunately it wouldn't be feasible for me to write out the entire legal code of Tangatarehua, however compared to most nations Tangatarehua doesn't tend to ban things and is quite a permissive society. For example, prostitution, gambling, public nudity and soft drugs are all legal. Oh and it's legal for teachers to use corporal punishment on disruptive or unruly students.

The only thing that's banned in Tangatarehua that you wouldn't find banned elsewhere pertains to the Empress - Tangatarehua still enforces lese majeste laws and it is illegal to publicly criticise the Empress and to deface or burn an image of her. (There is a legal loophole through which it's possible to criticise the institution of the Monarchy, but a criticism of the Empress as a person is forbidden because she is Tapu, or sacred.)

In a similar vein, it is also illegal to record, photograph or film the Empress as per her own request. She is very private and reclusive and because she's considered a living goddess it's not considered appropriate to capture her image on western technology and so her images always take the form of official portraits, statues or engravings. In the unlikely event that someone were to break this law, they probably wouldn't be prosecuted as this is considered more of a matter of imperial protocol than an actual law - although you'd almost definitely be forced to make a public apology.

Daily Question #18: BANHAMMER!!
What’s banned? What are the laws of your nation?.
What is your most well-known law? Why is it illegal? What are other laws in your nation? Are these laws being constantly broken? Or are your law forces protecting the rules? What is your oldest law? Why is it still in power?
Tell me about your laws.

One thing that may be particularly surprising is how strictly we regulate automobile use, almost to the point of banning it. In order to get a civil driver's license, you need to justify it with a reason and proof. Unless you live in a rural or remote area, commuting and errands is not a valid reason. One example of a valid reason is being hired by a trucking company or being an owner-operator. Regardless, it takes, at minimum, a year to get a civil driver's license, and you must wait until eighteen to get a learner's permit. In urban areas, there are few places in which automobiles are allowed(excepting tradesman vans and emergency services). If you're driving from a foreign country, you may start with the belief that it's fine to speed a few km/h over the limit. However, your lack of a Juansonian driver's license will get you kicked out of your vehicle and arrested at the checkpoint. If you somehow had a Juansonian driver's license despite your belief on how loosely speed limits are enforced, you will quickly find out why it's called a speed limit - no matter how slight, exceeding it by the margin of error will get you a fine proportional to income. Despite it being legal for minors to drink alcohol here, any alcohol in your system when you drive will send you - and all your passengers - to prison for up two years, and none will ever drive again. If you hit and kill someone while DUI, that's first degree murder, so you need to hope that you don't get a life sentence.

The history of Juansonia's relative lack of cars goes back to before cars existed (obviously). Before cars first became widespread around 1920, Juansonia was much like the RL united states - streets were used by pedestrians, streetcars, horse-drawn vehicles, pushcarts, and children at play. The introduction of widespread automobile use resulted in an upward trend of fatalities, and the public responded with outrage. In 1923, San Augusto mandated that all cars operating in city limits have a governor installed to prevent exceeding 40 km/h Many cities followed suit. Automakers responded by offering to help write news articles on car-pedestrian collisions, but the anti-pedestrian slant didn't catch on, and newspapers were boycotted until they didn't use automaker-written articles. Automakers tried to lobby police to humiliate people who walked in the street or crossed in the middle, but those officers were quickly removed from the force since pedestrian-control laws were not implemented. The term "Jaydriving" caught on more than "Jaywalking", which was responded to in 1925 by the national government of Juansonia taking over the licensing process, instituting a motor vehicle code, and mandating driver exams. In the late 40s and early 50s, highway construction accelerated and personal automobile use skyrocketed. Construction of Prosperidad, the current capitol, began in 1955. By the late 50's, automobile collisions had skyrocketed, and the JBC exposed how many bribes were involved in the license-granting process in 1957. In 1958, Juansonia refused to issue new learning permits without a valid reason, began issuing stricter sentences for vehicular offenses, and arrested thousands of DOT workers for corruption. By the end of 1960, all pre-58 learner's permits were either made into code F licenses or expired as permits. Juansonia would continue to invest more into transit and micromobility use, and many highways would be converted for other uses. The invention of the electronic limiter resulted in San Augusto and other cities amending their laws so a limiter that was activated within city limits would suffice.

Diaboland has laws but doesn't enforce them all too much. Like if a police officer sees you murder someone, yeah obviously they'll take you to jail. Maybe death penalty depending on severity of the crime. Arrests are pretty much on a "if there's sufficient evidence" basis. Hate crimes are seen as particularly heinous across the board, however. You'll get more severe punishment for a racially motivated killing than just a random civilian, for example.

A fun law that's pretty unorthodox is our laws regarding death penalty. Basically, the prisoner can choose how they want to die, as long as the judge permits it. In some cases, the victim or victim's family will get to decide the execution method. Obviously there's the normal ones like hanging, lethal injection, guillotine, electric chair bla bla bla. We've had some really goofy ones over the years like a dunk tank filled with piranhas, crushed by a billboard, deadly rollercoaster, basically any funny way people die in cartoons and movies. And yes, they are all public. There's even been festivals dedicated to executions.

One law that is very severe, however, is anything related to banning or censorship. So yes, we literally banned banning things. Diaboland is a big believer in freedom of the press, and any suppression of the people's voice is swiftly acted upon, often with the death penalty. This can include things like school libraries having banned books, radio stations bleeping out profanity, or scenes from a movie being cut for TV. This often raises the issue of what to do with media that promotes hate (something like Mein Kampf). Laws require new broadcastings/publishings of media in that manner to have a foreword describing the context of those views, why they were wrong then and why they were wrong now.

Daily Question #18: BANHAMMER!!
What’s banned? What are the laws of your nation?.

Laasmistan has most of the pretty standard laws one would expect from any civilized nation. However, we do have a few that may be seen as unusual by outsiders. The most notable among these is the blanket ban on interest of all kinds. This is said to be in line with Islamic prohibitions against both usury and interest. Additionally, despite being a majority Islamic nation we try to keep a moderate image for ourselves. This means all Islamist activity is strictly illegal and heavily cracked down upon. Unfortunately, despite these efforts there's still the occasional incident of religious violence.

Daily Question #18: BANHAMMER!!

Grand Emilia likes to consider itself a relatively liberal nation in its law enforcement, there are certain things that are perfectly normal in other countries that are outright banned in the Land of the Purple Rose.

The most famous law is the Automotive Act. Originally signed in 1938, the Automotive Act bans all personal automobiles from roads. Service and industrial vehicles, as well as public transport, are still allowed on the streets and roads of Grand Emilia, but ordinary citizens aren't allowed to own them as personal transport vehicles.

The law began life in the early 20th century, when automobile manufacturers in the United States and Great Britain attempted to sway the Commonwealth Council into investing more into infrastructure to suit their needs. While originally dismissed by the Council and put as a low priority, the pressure from these companies kept building. The act was first passed by Emborough City Council in the 1920s, as an effort to clamp down on pollution. With the success of Grand Emilia's recent mass rail network and the unpopularity of automobiles across the country, the ban was made nationwide in 1938, forever banishing personal automobiles from the streets.

Of course, such a law isn't without its opposition. Many citizens, especially among the upper class, still oppose this law to this day. As such, numerous underground "Auto Rings" exist, dedicated to contructing, driving and racing automobiles. While these "Auto Rings" have become more numerous over the years, the law enforcement has gotten better at bringing down these Rings.
