Executive Order to ensure that Luziyca complies with the Three Conditions
Image
Sera Svensson at a campaign rally

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - Just a day after the leaders of the OGIE arrived in Gusev where they were arrested by Namorese police for terrorist attacks against Namor, Sera Svensson signed an executive order regarding the "Three Conditions" that were a prerequisite for normalization relations with Namor from the end of the Third Namo-Luziycan War. Her order would formally ensure Luziycan compliance with the Three Conditions.

The Three Conditions were agreed by the Namorese Central Council to be like this:

  1. Luziyca ceases all recognition towards the regime in Peitoa (Republic of Namor) and recognizes the People's Republic of Namor as the sole, legitimate government of the Namorese nation and people.
  2. Luziyca acknowledges that Nantai is Namorese "culturally, politically and legally." It must agree that Namor should restore sovereignty over Nantai sometime soon (although Su didn't specify when) and prepare for reunification. It must recognize Namor's stance that although Namo supports a peaceful reunification, Namo can resort to unilateral moves whenever it sees fit.
  3. Luziyca apologizes and compensates for all harm inflicted by it on the Namorese people. Luziyca should compensate no less than £200,000 to the descendants of Namorese soldiers recognized to have fought in the First Namo-Luziycan War, no less than £400,000 to the relatives of those who died during the Txotai rebellion, and no less than £800,000 to the families of the 16 Namorese civilians killed in the Vulan Incident. As for the Vulan Incident, Luziyca must acknowledge that it deliberately perpetrated the massacre and either hand all responsible officers to Namor so that they can be tried, or try them domestically.

The executive order issued by Sera Svensson formally stated in response to the Three Conditions that:

  1. Noting the ceasing of operations of the Republic of Namor, and the decision to sever ties with the RoN prior to the Namorese liberation of Peitoa and its associated islands
  2. Declaring that the October Consensus adequately ensures the compliance of the Second Condition
  3. Formally acknowledges that it has committed significant grievances, and apologizes for what it has done to the Namorese people in the First Namo-Luziycan War, the Txotai War, and the Third Namo-Luziycan War.
    1. The government also takes full responsibility for the Vulan incident, and shall formally charge all those responsible for committing a breach of the laws of war
    2. Also shall provide adequate compensation as listed in the demands of the Three Conditions to all these parties, and to provide the necessary funds to transfer these funds to the Namorese government so to distribute them

When asked about this order by reporters, she says, "Our main priority for the first while is to acknowledge that we are no longer in a detente stage. In many ways, we are forming a close partnership, and my hope is that over the course of my presidency, we will no longer have detente: instead, we will become close regional partners, and as the economies of these two south Velkian nations become intertwined, I have high hopes that there shall be no stumbling blocks towards this lofty goal."

But her decision to support the Three Conditions has seen significant opposition: Paul Nikolovich condemned Sera Svensson, saying that "she is taking detente too far," and adding that "she is placing the interests of Namor over that of our people and our country. Had the people known that she would implement such a dangerous path, we would have kept Shjoraski in office!"

Approval ratings of Sera Svensson have fallen to 27% since she decided to extradite Yorskov Lhego and Valeriy Anisim to Namor for terrorism, as well as the recent decision to sign the executive order that would ensure that Luziyca fully complies with the Three Conditions had been set out by Namor nearly twenty years ago as a precondition to normalize relations with Namor.

In Gijirokastra, protesters sympathizing with the Otekians began to demand that Svensson leave, chanting "CARE FOR US, NOT THE NAMORIAN!" and "SVENSSON WILL BANKRUPT OUR COUNTRY AND ENRICH THE NAMORESE!" Banners demonstrated opposition to her plan to expand detente and help forge closer ties to Namor.

There, the new NLP leader, ethnic Otekian Dorothy Vasiliev stated at the rally that "There is a clear line between improving relations between Namor and Luziyca, and then there is just becoming a Namorese colony. And we ran past that line, and running towards Namo," much to critical acclaim and cheers from the crowd.

This protest, as well as others all across the country, indicates that it is clear that detente is starting to reach its political limits in Luziyca, like it already has within Namor.

Vice-President Colin Hardage told reporters that "Svensson ran on a platform to promise that we will get better services. While we are starting to see some of that policy with universal healthcare beginning to be put into place nationwide, her recent decisions to pander to the Namorese on such a huge scale is too much for many Luziycans to handle. We need to slow things down a smidge, and take it gradually, not just have these changes thrust upon us."

Svensson shot, VP Hardage to serve as acting President
Image
Acting President Colin Hardage

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - At a speech in Frontiersburg, discussing plans to launch an inquiry regarding the fabrication of the charges against top OGIE officials, President Sera Svensson was wounded by a gunman who fired two shots towards her, wounding her, and placing her in critical condition at the William Aberhart Hospital in Frontiersburg.

Sera Svensson announced to a crowd of protesters in Frontiersburg that "We will investigate all accusations that the tax evasion charges were fabricated for the sole purpose of transporting Yorskov Lhego and Valeriy Anisim to Namor, and I pledge that it will begin as soon as..." before she got shot. She finished "...possible," but was unable to finish the rest of the speech.

Paramedics were quick to respond, and transported her to the William Aberhart Hospital in Frontiersburg, where she currently is in intensive care.

A nurse stated that "she is critical. We are not certain if she will live or die, but it is painfully clear that she will not be able to exercise the duties of the Presidency for a while."

As soon as the news came of Sera Svensson's assassination attempt, Vice-President Colin Hardage assumed the duties of acting President, swearing the oath privately, and then stating on national television and radio the news of the tragedy, saying that "I feel sorrow for the family of Sera Svensson, and I sincerely hope that she recovers, because she is a good leader in the making. It would be a shame to see her career be cut off so soon after it began."

Across the country, many protesters who have gathered to demand an investigation to detente held a vigil for Sera Svensson, and expressed hopes that the President will recover from the assassination as soon as possible. When news struck the Square of Nations, many protesters were stunned to hear the news.

The suspect is 38-year old Lombardian Giacinto Borghese from Stagno, and is currently held in custody for attempted first-degree murder against the President.

Former CIA agent identified as suspect in attempted assassination of Svensson
Image
Giacinto Borghese at a campaign rally for mayor in 2014

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - As the nation teeters on the edge and nervously watching whether Colin Hardage becomes the actual President or if Sera Svensson will recover from her wounds, Giacinto Borghese's identity was released to the public. Born in Stagno, Lombardia on January 2, 1975, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1996, and served until 2013 when he retired to get involved in local politics.

Giaconto Borghese ran as an independent candidate in 2014 for mayor of Stagno, but lost the election. Borghese was an ultranationalist, believing that "the Namorians should go burn in hell," and was an avid support of the Otekian cause for independence, stating in a tweet from 2014 that "Oteki has a right to become a free and democratic country."

However, Borghese stated to Frontiersburg Police that "this assassination is because she is giving up our sovereignty, our independence to the Namorians. She is betrayin' our values and seeks to turn this holy land into a new Sodom. And we cannot allow this to happen!" He admitted to doing it, saying, "I did it so to save our beloved country."

With the news of the fact that Borghese was a former CIA agent, Acting President Colin Hardage has announced to fast-track the investigation of the CIA, saying that "the fact that the potential murderer of Sera Svensson was once part of the CIA indicates that the CIA needs to be investigated as soon as possible, and its powers heavily restricted so that the CIA will not be able to have the ability to destroy other nations, let alone this country."

FRONTIERSBURG, UPPER YORK - A spokesperson for President Sera Svensson has said that "she is recovering from her assassination attempt," and told reporters that "she is responsive, and responds well to simple commands. Her prognosis as of today seems very good for maintaining her function, but it is unclear if she will remain President."

The spokesperson also added that "her husband and children have been encouraged by this responsiveness, and has also received a lot of sympathy from many of our countrymen. If she continues to recover at this pace, she will definitely be transferred from the William Aberhart Hospital in Frontiersburg to the Empress Sofia Hospital in Jerusalem where she will undergo physical therapy, and other therapies to ensure that she will recover from this traumatic incident."

After hearing the news, Acting President Colin Hardage has said that "The President is beginning the long and rough road for recovery. She has opened her eyes for the first time in a few days, and can follow simple commands, according to her spokesman. He has said that her prognosis seems very good, but as much as we want to wish her luck in her recovery, we must admit that it is not clear if she shall survive. All we can do is wish her the best of luck in recovery, and that we need to stay united in the face of this tragedy." He also stated that "No matter what happens, the best we can do is continue the path of normality: and to this end, we will continue our partnership with Namor, but it must also be balanced with the needs of the people."

The nation is no longer anxiously watching her as much as they have been, but they are keeping a lookout for the health of the President, because it is possible that she will eventually die as a result of her wounds.

Esquarian Congress votes to disband the EU
Image
Headquarters of the EU

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - With news of a Pexit, and a potential Katranjian exit, the Esquarian Congress voted on legislation to "cease all activities of the Esquarian Congress," and calls upon the rest of the EU organs to "cease all operations before the year out."

The legislation is titled "On the procedures to terminate all activities of the Esquarian Union," stating that "due to redundancy with the EC, and the historic ties of the EU to Luziycan foreign policy," in addition to declining membership (seeing a decrease from nine members in 2014 to five), that "all EU organs should cease operation at 11:59:59 pm, on December 31, 2016, at the latest," and also adding that "all EU resolutions and laws shall cease having effect," before stating that "once this bill has passed, the Congress shall adjourn sine die."

Due to the Esquarian Congress providing the budget for the other institutions of the Esquarian Union, such as the Esquarian Commission, the ICC, and the EU Defense Command, the EU will, by January 1, 2017, lack funding to operate its institutions, especially with the Congress ceasing all operations. Consequently, programs operated by the EU will essentially be no longer to operate due to a lack of cash.

When asked by reporters, Speaker Joseph Daskalov explained that "The EU has outlived its purpose, which was to foster closer relations among Esquarians. The fact that the EC exists to provide the same role, and has significantly more members proves that we can no longer have a separate organization." Daskalov recommend to governments that "All of the current EU members should consider joining the EC as soon as possible."

No comment has yet been made from the other EU institutions regarding the decision, although the EU Commission has been reportedly discussing plans to abolish the Esquarian Union altogether.

Svensson transferred to Jerusalem, releases video message
Image
Sera Svensson before flying to Bethlehem

JERUSALEM, INLEDA - Today, President Sera Svensson has been transferred from the William Aberhart General Hospital to the Empress Sofia Hospital. A spokesperson for Sera Svensson has also released a video of the President from her hospital bed in Jerusalem, expressing thanks for the well-wishes and explaining her recovery.

In her native Swedish, the President explained that "I am recovering very well. The bullet has been removed at the Frontiersburg hospital, and I am quite confident that I will return home pretty soon, but it is unclear if I will be able to continue my position as President of this beloved country. That being said, I would like thank you all for your well-wishes and prayers for my health over the past few weeks." She also told viewers that "My hope is that I will be back at the Presidential Palace by the end of the year, but things change, y'know."

Upon the release of the video, leader of the official opposition, and of the Social Credit Party, Paul Nikolovich stated that "I am glad to hear that Sera Svensson is recovering, but I believe that it is a good idea for Svensson to step down from the Presidency so she can concentrate on her recovery from the traumatic incident that occurred in Frontiersburg."

Acting President Colin Hardage however fired back at Paul Nikolovich, saying that "While I am prepared to formally assume the title of President any time, I have hopes that she fully recovers. Whether she will step down, it is her own decision to make, not ours."

Nantainese Legislature considers allowing Nantainese to vote in Namorese elections on home soil
Image
River Tam

KENYEN, NANTAI - Today, PAP legislator Gi Sang has tabled legislation that would permit Nantainese to vote in Namorese elections on Nantainese soil. The legislation will help ensure that "Nantainese can feel more connected to Namor," in case of a hypothetical referendum for the status of Nantai, and mean that people ages 18 and older shall be allowed to vote in Namorese presidential elections, as well as Namorese CenCo elections.

Gi explained that "for generations, Nantainese have participated exclusively in the Luziycan political system. However... however, we'd like to encourage Nantainese to also look at Namor's political system, and to participate in that too: after all, Namor has all these seats, but yet, all of them come from East Po'ai, not from Nantai, so the system is inevitably rigged in favor of the leftists."

Gi then stated that "if we permit Nantainese to vote in Namorese elections, we will finally have a say in Namo, and explain to the Namorese politicians who for so long have ignored the will of the people, what we really want, not what they want from their ivory towers because they never experienced actual Nantainese outside of East Po'ai."

Gi's bill was met with substantial opposition: Andrei Wei from the Whig Party criticized the bill, stating that "if we allow Nantainese to participate in Namorese elections, Namor will claim that their claim over Nantai has legitimacy, and they will use that as an excuse to ignore the will of the people. Is that what we want? NO!"

However, it is very clear though that even if the law permitting Nantainese gets passed in time, this law would be met with a lot of challenge from the federal government, so it is very unlikely that Nantainese will be able to vote in this Namorese election without going towards Namor, or heading to the Namorese consulate in Kenyen. It is more likely that Nantainese may be able to vote from Nantai in the NMR 2383 general elections.

Esquarian Commission officially decides to dissolve the Esquarian Union
Image
Headquarters of the EU

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - Over a month ago, the Esquarian Congress voted itself out of existence, meaning that as a result of lack of funding, the EU would be unable to provide services after December 31, 2016. Today, the flag of the Esquarian Union was lowered for the last time as the Esquarian Commission officially voted to dissolve the EU.

The legislation that the Congress passed was titled "On the procedures to terminate all activities of the Esquarian Union," stating that "due to redundancy with the EC, and the historic ties of the EU to Luziycan foreign policy," in addition to declining membership (seeing a decrease from eleven members in 2014 to seven), that "all EU organs should cease operation at 11:59:59 pm, on December 31, 2016, at the latest," and also added that "all EU resolutions and laws shall cease having effect," before stating that "once this bill has passed, the Congress shall adjourn sine die."

Due to the fact that the Esquarian Congress provided the budget for the other institutions of the Esquarian Union, such as the Esquarian Commission, the ICC, and the EU Defense Command, the EU would lack funding to operate its institutions from Jan. 1, 2017 onwards, especially with the Congress having ceased all operations. Consequently, programs operated by the EU would essentially be no longer to operate due to a lack of cash.

Today, the President of the Esquarian Union, Lilyana Paskaleva (from Katranjiev), after reaching an agreement to end the EU issued the following statement to the press, saying that "Effective immediately, all member states of the EU shall be released from their obligations to the Esquarian Union."

When asked by reporters when the EU will end, she replied that, "It will end at the very last second of the very last day of 2016," but also added that "with this decision, the EU now is basically going to spend the rest of the year wrapping up loose ends and winding all operations down, so that by the time that clock hits midnight, the EU will cease to exist as an independent legal entity."

Plans are proposed to transfer control of the International Criminal Court to the Organization of Esquarian Nations, while the EU Defense Command and the Supreme Court will be dissolved altogether. All of the records of the EU will be transferred to various archives throughout the world. In addition, the future of the Greenwich Area is now uncertain due to the fact that there is no central authority coordinating the area.

For now, Acting President Colin Hardage has said that "we will try and maintain the Greenwich Area, but since the EU is essentially kaput, there is no obligation to remain in it. We will plan on negotiating a new treaty to create a successor to the Greenwich Area."

Shohai Antelope wins, government pledges to continue relationship
Image
President General Shohai Antelope

NAMO, NAMOR - Today, PTH has officially announced that Liberationist party leader, Shohai Antelope had won the Namorese general election by a stunning landslide that has been unseen since the NMR 2368 elections when Fu Wen became President-General, removing Kaitlyn Khan from the office.

"The People's Republic of Namor is a People's Republic again," Shohai Antelope declared in his victory speech. "The election may be over, but this is only the beginning of a long campaign to achieve a better future for all Namorese, from east to west and from north to south. By casting our votes, we have initiated the revolutionary spark that will set this country ablaze."

Meanwhile, Huan An had conceded defeat after the Namorese districts of West Nozama and East Nozama saw overwhelming victories for the Popular Front (an electoral alliance of the Democratic Socialists, the Socialists, and the Liberationists), explaining to PTH that "We have lost. It is clear that we have let ourselves down," prior to congratulating Huan An on his victory.

Before PTH officially called the election in favor of Shohai Antelope, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Alina Stasov stated on Twitter her congratulations to Shohai Antelope, and stating that "may he run Namor well!"

Acting President Colin Hardage has said after all the ballots were tallied that "I am glad that Namor chose who they thought to be the best choice for their country. I am looking forward to working with him, and I wish him the best of luck in his coming term."

In Nantai though, his rhetoric towards the constituent republic has scared people: Chief Executive River Tam stated to LRT that "I am concerned that after years of peace in Nantai, after years of stability and increasingly cordial relations, Shohai will pander to the interests of the Namorese, who seek to integrate Nantai into Namor, without consider what we, the Nantainese, want for Nantai." She went on to add that "I want reassurance from Shohai that 'the status quo as it stands now' be upheld in regards to Nantai."

However, despite these concerns, former Chief Executive Kung Alicia commented that "I doubt Shohai will invade Nantai and occupy its territory. It is just pure rhetoric."

Sera Svensson makes first public appearance
Image
Sera Svensson at campaign stop

YERMAL, SPRESI - President Sera Svensson made her first public appearance since her assassination attempt in Frontiersburg, appearing at the official dedication of the Fu Wen Primary School, built near the site of the Veran Hus Primary School, which suffered a tragic school shooting last year, resulting in the deaths of 19 people.

President Svensson said that "despite the actions of the madman who took nineteen souls last year, we will remain strong. We shall remain firm and steadfast. We will never forget the death of these innocent angels who left us too soon, but we must make sure that Yermal returns to normalcy. Thus, I open the school in honor of a man who brought detente to new heights, and whose response to the tragedy last year was enough for the community to name the school after him. I hereby open the Fu Wen Primary School."

Sera Svensson said at an interview that she hopes that "by the first Monday of April, I hope that I will be able to come back to Bethlehem, to serve my nation, and ensure that we get back to making this country great again." She then added that "We can't exactly mourn my attempted murder now, can't we? That'd be a bit tacky."

Vice President Colin Hardage has said that "the news that Svensson has been making public appearances is quite wonderful to hear, and I cannot wait to see her inside the Presidential Palace on April 4th."

Doctors have however advised Svensson that she should "take it easy" for the first while as she gets back into the swing of things, so Colin Hardage may maintain some of his role for the next little while.

A Nantainese referendum is on the horizon
Image
Chief Executive River Tam

KENYEN, NANTAI - At the Nantainese legislature, legislator Yi Cheng of the People's Action Party has tabled a proposal for a referendum on Nantai's status "within ninety days of approval by the Chief Executive, regardless of whether Namo or Bethlehem approve of the referendum or not," with the choices of status quo, independence, or joining Namor.

As Yi Cheng tabled the bill for first reading, he said that "for a long time, both Luziycans and Namorese have sought to negotiate the final status of Nantai. The October Consensus seems good in theory, but the Nantainese were not involved in any of this. Nowhere did they even consider what we wanted to say: while we have agreed with the status quo, it is now clear that we must send a message to the rest of the world that our opinions matter. The choice is up to the Nantainese on whether it should join Namor, or not at all."

His speech drew applause from the entire chamber, and after a voice vote, only 24 legislators have voted against: 2 were absent, resulting in 126 ayes, 24 nays, and 2 absentees for the first reading. It now is referred to committee, although it is practically guaranteed to pass through committee.

The bill stipulates that the referendum concerning the future status of Nantai must have three options:

  • Status quo - as the constituent republic of Nantai within the Christian Republic
  • Unification - becoming Nantai Prefecture in the People's Republic of Namor
  • Sovereignty - becoming an independent country

To ensure fairness, the bill mandates that the governments of Namor and Luziyca send observers, as well as inviting other countries such as Geadland, Katranjiev, and Ainin to observe the elections for any irregularities made on election day.

The voting system will not be first past the post, but instead would be instant-runoff voting: in particular, optional preferential voting, meaning that if the referendum takes place, people can just place an "X" next to their first choice, or they can number their selections on the ballot from 1 to 3, with 1 being the most preferred option, and 3 being least preferred option.

With news of this referendum passing its first reading, Chief Executive River Tam has expressed her approval. Tam stated that "I am glad that Nantainese will get a say. I know it may be controversial, but I think it is about time for us Nantainese to express whether we want to join Namor, or to stay with Luziyca. When even the Namorese government refuses to even allow people in the constituent republic of Nantai to have a say in their elections, but yet still claim it, it is nuts."

President Sera Svensson however was critical of the bill for a referendum on Nantai's status. In Jasper, she told reporters that "this bill for a referendum in Nantai is unilateral and will inevitably damage detente. We cannot afford to damage detente at a time when Shohai Antelope prepares to take office as the first Liberationist President-General since detente began. We will do everything we can to discourage the Nantainese legislature from holding the referendum," but said in a disappointed tone that "[r]egardless, we will recognize the results of the referendum, since all constituent republics do have a right to secede from us."

Svensson returns and has an axe to grind

Chief Executive River Tam: traitor?

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - President Sera Svensson has made her return to the Congressional Palace today, and was met with unanimous applause at a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate. She made an address to the chamber, condemning the plans for a Nantainese referendum concerning its future status, using more harsh language than she did yesterday in Jasper.

Sera Svensson said, "The referendum being held in Nantai jeopardizes detente. It threatens relations with Namor, and it could potentially catapult us towards a fourth Namo-Luziycan War. Nowhere did the federal government approve of the decision of Nantainese Legislative Assembly to hold a unilateral referendum!"

Consumed by fury, she angrily stated, "This referendum only seeks to take advantage of paranoia, of rightist paranoia generated by the People's Action Party, and the Whig Party, to ensure that detente collapses! Is that what you want, Yi Cheng and River Tam? If so, you are doing a great job in destroying all the progress we have made over the past few years! Congratulations for that!"

After a long pause, she stated that "We will condemn all attempts by the Nantainese legislature to destroy all the progress that we have made in advancing Namorese-Luziycan relations, and we will point that out that if in the event that the referendum is held, status quo means we will continue to adhere to the October Consensus. Period. Nantai will remain a Namorese territory under Luziycan administration until the Nantainese are ready to return to Namorese control. And we will not let the demagogues who control Kenyen say otherwise!" This earned applause from her Liberal and Socred colleagues, and a few Whigs.

However, there has already been support for the referendum: many Otekians in Luziyca supported Yi's proposal for a referendum for Nantai, with an unnamed Otekian saying that "the referendum should demonstrate that Nantainese opinions matter when it comes to settling the Nantai dispute." Many Lombardians and Inledans have shown support, and the range of support ranges from the left to the right. A few have opposed Svensson's confrontational tone with Kenyen's legislature, concerned that it may strain relations between Bethlehem and Kenyen.

In Nantai, a poll taken by the Kenyen Sibo have shown 82% support of the referendum proposal (with 15% opposing, and the rest offering no opinion), and it is clear that it will pass through committee, and pass second reading.

A Gallup poll has shown that 65% of the national population support a referendum regarding Nantai's status, with 23% opposing a referendum, and the remainder having no opinion on the matter.

Svensson visits Kenyen, scolds River Tam
Image
Sera Svensson in Kenyen

KENYEN, NANTAI - As many Nantainese have expressed their support for a referendum, President Sera Svensson has made a visit to Kenyen to try and convince the Nantainese Legislature to not hold the referendum, stating that "to hold a referendum on the future status of Nantai will jeopardize relations between Namor and Luziyca," and then went on state that "[the status quo] shall mean the October Consensus: Nantai will be returned to Namor eventually. Not now, of course, but at a future date."

Sera Svensson told the legislature at a committee meeting that "to hold a referendum on the future status of Nantai will jeopardize relations between Namor and Luziyca. This is why I am opposed to it, because this referendum is unilaterally decided by the Nantainese legislature, without consulting the federal government, or the Namorese government."

"That said," she stated, "because it is clear that this proposal for a referendum has popular support among the Nantainese people, I have to point out something: should the Nantainese decide to vote for status quo, it shall mean the October Consensus: Nantai will be returned to Namor eventually. Now now, of course, but at a future date."

She also stated to the committee that "the federal government will not recognize the referendum as legally binding," meaning that if Nantainese vote to become sovereign or to join Namor, the federal government will refuse to grant sovereignty to Nantai, or allow it to join Namor without consulting the Namorese government.

When asked by the media about whether she valued placing Namo-Luziycan relations over the interests of the Nantainese people, Sera Svensson simply stated, "depends on the situation," and refused to elaborate further.

Meanwhile, leader of the official opposition Paul Nikolovich of the Social Credit Party has condemned Svensson's approach to Nantainese relations, saying that "during the campaign, she was willing to listen to the Nantainese. Now that she is in power, she is ignoring their interests, and instead putting the interests of Namor above that of Nantai."
When asked on whether he supported Nantainese self-determination, he replied, "Of course. If the Nantainese want to join Namor, that's their right. If they want to stay with us, that's their right. If they want to become sovereign, that's their right. It should only be up to them, though."

Referendum approved by legislature, River Tam "considering" a veto
Image
Legislative Building

KENYEN, NANTAI - Today, the referendum has returned for its second reading, having passed committee stage yesterday. Following this reading,, a vote was taken regarding the referendum, with 113 representatives voting aye, 34 voting against, one abstaining, and two being absent.

Despite Chief Executive River Tam's support for the first draft of the bill, the amendment (that was implemented at the committee stage) changed the status quo from being "as the constituent republic of Nantai within the Christian Republic" to being "the arrangement declared by the October Consensus with regards to Nantai" (i.e. Nantai is a Namorese territory under Luziycan administration), which has been criticized by some, including River Tam.

She said in a press conference at the Legislative Building that "What I hoped that this bill would achieve would be that Nantai would make their own decision, and so that dispute between Namor and Luziyca will come to an end. Instead, it leaves the option so that two of the results lead to Nantai becoming part of Namor, even though most of us do not want to be part of Namor."

When asked if she plans to veto it, she replied, "I am not sure if I want to veto the bill or not. I'm trying to decide whether it is worth attempting to veto it, but due to a high support for the bill as is, it will probably get passed anyways."

Thus, for now, the bill sits at her desk, but since she (like the President of Luziyca, and several other Governors) cannot use the line-item veto, she is faced with the decision of having to either implement the referendum as is, or veto it and likely end up having it be overriden by a 2/3rds majority.

President Sera Svensson has publicly urged River Tam to veto the bill, "in the name of peace between Namor and Luziyca," and added that "the Legislature must not override the veto."

Chief Executive Kung Alicia said that "if I were still the Chief Executive, I'd immediately sign the bill, for the sake of self-determination for Nantai. I want the people to decide their own future."

The referendum campaign begins
Image
Chief Executive River Tam

KENYEN, NANTAI - Earlier today, Chief Executive River Tam has signed the bill concerning the referendum for Nantai, thereby setting the election day to be 90 days of when the Chief Executive approves it. Thus, Nantainese will go to the polls on July 6th, in the expectation that they would determine their own future.

River Tam stated that "After having consulted with my cabinet and colleagues in the Legislature, it is clear that the only realistic solution is for me to sign it, and declare the beginning of the campaign period for the Nantainese status referendum. Thus, Nantainese shall go to the polls on July 6th."

The voting system will still be alternative vote, and the choices shall be as follows:

  • Status quo - the arrangement declared by the October Consensus with regards to Nantai
  • Independence - Nantai shall become a sovereign nation
  • Reunification - Nantai becomes part of Namor

Chief Executive River Tam stated that "while it is a disappointment that this referendum is likely non-binding, our hope is that Nantainese shall turn out in large numbers so to show Namo and Bethlehem what we truly want," and added that "ideally, status quo would have been what it was originally suggested by Yi Cheng."

Thus, over the next few weeks, the campaigns shall begin, as all sides seek to win the hearts and minds of the Nantainese.

Federal government requests injunction on the referendum
Image
Sera Svensson in Kenyen

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - Nearly a week into the referendum campaign, the federal government has requested a motion to file an injunction against the constituent republic of Nantai, to bar it from holding the referendum on July 6th and to force its cancellation, due to "national security" concerns.

Sera Svensson stated to the press that "with the Namorese planning to pass legislation that would destroy all of our trade with Namor and prolong the recession, we have to do everything we can to make sure that relations with Namor remain strong and healthy, no matter what. Namor is a very important trading partner, so we cannot afford to destroy all the progress that was made over the past several years."

"We are going to do everything we can to prevent the Fourth Namo-Luziycan War from breaking out," Svensson declared, "we will do everything we can to prevent further damage, and therefore, we will file the injunction against the Nantainese government to make sure the referendum will never be held." She also added that "if the motion fails, we will refuse to recognize the results of this referendum. That's all."

When asked by a reporter from LRT why she is betraying the promise to support Nantainese self-determination, Svensson replied that "Either you support the way things are now, or you want a Fourth Namo-Luziycan War. This is something that we cannot afford to have, especially with politicians like Chia Bovang who want to institute such strict tariffs and seek to destroy the progress we have made over the past few years."

"We cannot let Nantai be a thorn in our side when it comes to relations between Namo and Bethlehem," she said. "Kenyen has no role, and it should not expect to have any say whatsoever in what goes on between Shohai Antelope and myself."

The proposal for an injunction has been met with criticism: organizers of the protests said that 200,000 people (Kenyen police claim it is just 75,000) have took to the streets in Kenyen, protesting over two issues: the lack of an option for becoming "just" a constituent republic, and the proposed injunction against the Nantainese government that would force them to stop the referendum.

Nantainese flags were flown, with banners reading "WE WILL DECIDE!" and "NO TO AN INJUNCTION, YES TO A CONSTITUENT REPUBLIC" were shown. Slogans such as "We will decide!", "Our future, our choice," and "We have a say!" were chanted by the demonstrators. Among the attendees was former President Breuvi Shjoraski.

When interviewed, Shjoraski said, "I am a firm believer in self-determination. I don't think Bethlehem or Namo should interfere with Kenyen's own future," and added that "Svensson is getting too far."

Racial riots break out in Firenze
Image
A fiery scene in Firenze

FIRENZE, LOMBARDIA - Last night, riots broke out between the Shudri community and the Lombardian community following the murder of Firenze Mayor Tizio Di Cosso. At 6 pm Lombardian time, police chief Barnaba Panciera said that "about 25 people were killed, and about 250 people were injured in the riots."

Since the murder of Mayor Tizio Di Cosso by 22-year old Gregari De Riggi, angry mobs have been going through Shudri neighborhoods, throwing Molotov cocktails at Shudri houses and looting Shudri businesses. Footage has shown some Firenze police officers in uniform actively participating in the looting, or helping lead demonstrations.

39-year old Shudri man Iginio Padyatri, uncle of the deceased Schiavo Padyatri said that "the police cars were leading a bunch of angry men: armed with molotov cocktails, some armed with guns, and all marching to exact revenge. The police clearly cannot keep us safe." He added that "the police knocked on our doors and ordered to let them in: we had no choice but to do so, or we'd risk being shot dead."

Iginio lost his 3-year old daughter to lynch mobs, with Iginio stating that "one of the cops just strangled my daughter: it took her several minutes of agony before she finally left this Earth." His wife and seven-year old son were elsewhere during the incident. The house where they resided in was burned to the ground.

However, Firenze Police Department chief Baranaba Panciera stated that "the allegations that our police officers are actively participating in this Shudri-perpetrated incident is ridiculous. We are not leading lynch mobs: to the contrary, we are trying to keep a full-fledged massacre from happening here, and we're trying to keep things from escalating."

In Yerevan, Chief Executive Arcibaldo Mattiace condemned the riots and criticized Acting Mayor Lea di Santis for "refusing to take a strong stance to condemn this heinous crime against the Shudri," and condemned Baranaba Panciera's statements for being "pure and utter lies," when compared to the video evidence that have been uploaded.

The Chief Executive has issued a mass arrest warrant, targeting the Acting Mayor, the Firenze City Council, the Firenze Police Department, and around 2,000 suspects, and has warned that "a state of emergency might be declared in the Firenze Metropolitan Area if things continue to deteriorate."

Svensson to deploy military in riot-torn city
Image
Another fiery scene in Firenze

FIRENZE, LOMBARDIA - President Sera Svensson has announced that in her position as Commander-in-Chief of the Luziycan Armed Forces, that she will deploy the Luziycan Army to Firenze to restore order and co-operate with the Lombardian Police to execute the arrest warrants issued by Arcibaldo Mattiace to the local police, city council, and around two thousand suspects.

Sera Svensson said that "The city of Firenze, from the news footage, seems like a war-torn city: our immediate priority is to restore the peace here, and then our next focus is to investigate the root causes of the problem, and to prevent riots like this from occurring again."

Already, countless officials have condemned it: interim Sinhakese President Helga Duta has condemned the riots and murders, while the opposition leader in Sinhako, Johannes Sikari has condemned the riots.

In the city, Acting Mayor Lea di Santis said to reporters that "to be honest, this riot was instigated by the damned gypsies living in their ghettoes. They are going around to our neighborhoods and attacking us. We are defending ourselves from them." She stated that "about 15 Lombardians were killed, and about 105 gyps were slain. I assume about 3,000 were wounded."

Police Chief Baranaba Panciera released the count, stating that "14 Lombardians were killed, and 124 gypsies. 2,483 were wounded as of one o' clock this afternoon." He urged for "peace and calm," and ordered the police to be mobilized to crack down on the riots.

The Coupe d'Esquarium: our chances of survival
Image
Design evolution of the footballs

MINAKBIR, LIVANCIA - Tomorrow, we witness the first match of the Coupe d'Esquarium: the new national team of Luziyca has left a few days ago to adapt themselves to the tropical environment and to practice for their first match tomorrow: the match would be against the Scotians, who have decided to participate in this edition.

Despite being smaller than previous editions due to a boycott as a result of allegations of corruption, and/or security concerns (with eight nations who officially boycotted), many football powers like Ainin, Luziyca, Vyvland, Pavonistade and Nevanmaa are participating in this edition of the CdE.

This edition, the Patriots are sorted in Group B, alongside Scotia, Lydland, and Nevanmaa. This is the first major international competition under the new system that was implemented as a consequence of the controversy that plagued the previous edition of the Coupe.

The greatest challenge, as examined by Aucuria's "News of the Republic" is that "[i]t's unclear how well the Luziycan team will work as a unified group." While they have practiced quite hard over the past few days in the town of Imbiegħed, this is certainly a match that will determine our future. Why?

If we are able to win this one, we may have secured the group qualifications, for our next match shall be that of Lydland. As far as we are concerned, we have that match in the bag: that match is going to be a cakewalk, and if we pass that, we basically get to go into the Round of Sixteen, since we won two out of the three matches.

However, should we lose the match against Scotia, while we may recover in the match against Lydland, it will be an uphill challenge to beat Nevanmaa, what with their racism, bigotry, and their football prowess. Losing the match against Scotia means that the match against Nevanmaa will be very important.

As for Nevanmaa's odds? They will likely crush Lydland tomorrow, and then on Monday, comes their challenge: the match against Scotia will be critical. If Scotia lost their first match, they would be significantly demoralized, and it can help Nevanmaa boost their odds of getting into the Round of Sixteen, thus eliminating Scotia from the running.

Scotia will have a tough battle: they have to deal with the Luziycan Patriots, and then the Nevan Lions on the first two days: it may as well be their group of death.

And for Lydland? Hell will freeze over before Lydland wins the Coupe, let alone the group stage.

Thus, we wish the Patriots good luck, and may they play well tomorrow!

Highlights of our journey
Image
Isaac Dobrev, head of the Luziycan football federation

MINAKBIR, LIVANCIA - Yesterday, there was a disappointment as we faced the Nevan Lions and got defeated, breaking our victory streak, and staining it with a loss. Isaac Dobrev has issued a statement regarding the CdE VI, and we take a look at the odds of us winning tomorrow's match against the Chiefs.

The highlights of yesterday's match
At the 11 minute mark, the Patriots score a goal: forward Mario Rusenov shot and scored, giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead over the Nevan Lions. After celebrations, at the 22 minute mark, Niko Väisänen attempted to score a goal, but was repelled by Andrei Rusik. Rusik kept the Nevans out of the goal, and by the end of the first half, the Luzzies were leading 1-0.

The second half though saw a decline in Patriot performance: at the 53-minute mark, defender James Rostov attempted to intercept Johannes Eklund's pass to Niko Väisänen failed, and Niko was able to tie the game in favor of the Nevans, evening the score. At the 61-minute mark, A.B. Normal scored a goal, retaking the lead for the Patriots at 2-1. But this lead would not last long, for at the 70-minute goal, Tero Kolkkala managed to tie the score once more.

At the 89th minute, just as it seemed like the match would go to overtime, Johannes Eklund scored a goal, ending the match with a 2-3 loss for the Patriots.

When asked by reporters, Karl Jung explained that "we did a decent job. We played well, we had a great time, and I have hopes that the match in two day's time [April 28th] shall end in a Luziycan victory. We will break the curse, and we shall win our second title this edition!"

Isaac Dobrev states that this is the "most peaceful" he's ever seen
Today, the head of the Luziycan Football Federation, Isaac Dobrev said that "this edition, despite being marred by boycotts, is, compared to the previous edition of the Chaska i Esquarium, the most peaceful that I have ever seen."

He stated that "apart from an incident in Belt tal-Lvant involving some players in the Senterland national team damaging a hotel, there has been a virtual absence of hooliganism and violence. I have absolute faith that compared to CdE V, CdE VI shall live up to its motto, and be genuinely fair and peaceful."

Our prediction for the immediate future
Now that we are in the Round of Sixteen, this match determines our fate: if we win tonight, we get to go on to the quarterfinals. If we do lose, we will have to pack our bags and head home.

Here are the standings as of the end of the Group Stage:
  • West Cedarbrook has 2 wins, and a loss: it scored 5 goals, and only had a goal scored against it
  • Luziyca has 2 wins and a loss: it has scored 7 goals, but has five goals scored against it

West Cedarbrook is the leader of Group A, while we are the runner-up, behind the Nevan Lions, who will be playing against Arkiasis tomorrow.

If we were to compare them, we may as well be at a disadvantage, it is quite clear that while we have a lot of fans travelling to Livancia, and they have done quite well in our group, the recent loss against the Nevan Lions may hamper their morale. We know that the Patriots are training well, but with the morale of the Patriots and the Chiefs, the Chiefs may have a bit higher morale than us.

Thus, we predict a 2-1 victory for the Chiefs. Sorry, Patriots.

The light at the end of the tunnel
Image
Coach Gutman of the West Cedarbrookese Chiefs

MINAKBIR, LIVANCIA - Today, the Luziycan Patriots have advanced from the Round of Sixteen to the quarterfinals, with the Patriots scoring a 2-1 victory over the West Cedarbrookese Chiefs in the pitch at the al-Watan Stadium in the capital.

The highlights of the match
At the 16 minute mark, Chief forward William Shiffmn shot and scored a goal, giving the West Cedarbrookese Chiefs a lead (by one point). The celebration did not last long, for at the 27th minute, Phillipe DeSoliel's attempt at a goal would be intercepted by Patriot defender James Rostov, who then passed it to Gregory Todorov. Gregory then went on to make a pass to Mario Rusenov, who then scored a goal, tying the first half 1-1.

For the rest of the first half, both sides stonewalled each other's attempts to score further goals, meaning that at the end of the half, the results were a goal for the Patriots, and one for the Chiefs.

The second half was met with further stonewalling: attempts at the 52nd, 61st, and 72nd minutes by the Patriots, and at the 58th, 63rd, and 78th minutes by the Chiefs were met with fierce resistance and a failure to break the tie. It was only at the 86th minute when Gregory Todorov managed to score a goal for the Patriots, breaking the tie in our favor. The match came to an end with a 2-1 victory!

Our predictions for the quarterfinal match on April 30th
Our next opponent is Arkiasis: having defeated the Nevan Lions 1-0, and being runners-up in Group C, it may be a good thing that we aren't facing the Nevans again, considering what they have done to us this past Tuesday when we got trounced by them, and lost 2-3.

Compared to us, Arkiasis has a poorer win-loss record than us, with them only having a single win, a draw, and a loss (much like Estovnia, who they only failed to get in due to scoring less goals than Arkiasis). We could thus logically say that we can easily dominate them.

Except there is a catch: we confidently predicted a Patriot defeat, but somehow, we were able to scrape by and win the match. Arkiasis has scored 4 goals for during the group stage, but it took 4 goals against, so it has zero. We scored 7 goals for, and took 5 goals against us during the group stage, so we got +2.

Since both of us have won their most recent matches, this would be a match worth watching for, because while the odds appear to be in our favor, the Arkiasis national team may be able to pull off an upset and throw a spanner into our plans to bring the trophy back.

It is time for... April Annihilation (in May)!

An ashamed La Via

FIRENZE, LOMBARDIA - Today, arrest warrants were carried out on influential Purity Congress members, as pursuant to the executive order that declared the Purity Congress a terrorist organization. Among those caught up in this string of arrests were Luziycan Guardian Ulrico De Stefano, Pure Guardian Valdis Kortchens (who arrived from Pavonistade following the group being designated a hate group in the Eastern Islands), and most infamously, the ex-leader of the National Luziycan Party, Narsete La Via, as well as a few other dozen members including the Acting Mayor of Firenze, Lea di Santis.

These arrests took place throughout the day, and were mostly concentrated in Firenze, except for La Via, who was arrested in Bethlehem. All of those arrested face charges of being in a terrorist organization, and some face other charges, most notably Di Santis.

Commander Amore Marandola (serving as the military officer in charge of maintaining martial law) told reporters that "these documents reported by the Sinhakese news agencies were a very damning indictment against the Purity Congress. They have managed to infiltrate the local police, the local government, especially after the fall of communism."

Marandola said that "with the fact that the Purity Congress has been so deeply embedded within Firenze's civic administration, it is painfully clear that at this point, we will need to construct an entirely new [municipal] government from the ground up, instead of attempting to reform the previous municipal government."

President Sera Svensson had applauded the decision, saying that "we must send a message to racists and bigots that your opinions are no longer welcomed, especially if they engage in violent and illegal activity."

Former President Breuvi Shjoraski also supported the decision, stating that "the fact that they were heavily involved in the riots [in Firenze], combined with their infiltration of the local government of Firenze show that they are really a terrorist organization."

Even Chief Executive Arcibaldo Mattiace had praised the arrests of the top PCG officials, saying that "Firenze is an embarrassment to all of Lombardia," and hoped that the arrests would "bring a better reputation to our homeland."

An unforgivable crime, President offers economic, moral support to affected nations

President Sera Svensson

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - In light of the terrorist attacks in the Nordanian nations of Vjaarland, Lyonsland, and Arkaisis, President Sera Svensson has made an emergency announcement on national television, condemning the terrorist attacks and offering moral and economic support to all of the Nordanian nations who have suffered through these attacks.

Svensson stated that "This morning, an unforgivable crime has been committed. In various cities across Nordania... in Vjaarland, in Lyonsland, and in Arkiasis, terrorists have committed crimes against ordinary civilians. What gain do they have from committing such a barbaric crime?"

"They won't. They may believe that they are doing this for a greater cause, but... many, many nations will make sure that the third of June, shall be the beginning of the end of the cause that the terrorists have supported," Svensson declared.

"On behalf of our government, we would like to offer economic support to all of the nations affected by this inhuman terrorist attack. We hope that our economic aid will help ensure that you may rebuild and recover," she said.

She then added that "We would also like to provide moral support. On this horrifying day, you are not alone. Every Luziycan, from Askatasuna to Jerusalem, from Kenyen to Gijirokastra, shall send their prayers towards you in this trying time."

More as the story develops.

Luziyca to "stay out of the Nordanian War"
Image
President Sera Svensson

BETHLEHEM, F.C. - With news of the declaration of war against Teutonia by various Nordanian countries as a result of evidence of Teutonian involvement on the June 3rd terrorist attacks in Nordania, many officials have advocated for Luziyca to engage in military involvement in Nordania against the Nazi terrorists. However, today, Svensson has firmly rejected these plans at a press conference at the Presidential Palace.

Svensson told reporters that "I have consulted with my cabinet, and these meetings were long and gruelling. Now, after countless days of discussions, we have made an official position."

"The Christian Republic is going to stay out of the Nordanian War," Svensson said. "We will supply nations fighting Teutonian terrorism with weapons, economic, and moral support against the Teutonian foe. But I am going to say this: they shouldn't expect Luziycan troops on the ground."

The Social Credit Party supported Svensson's position, with Paul Nikolovich saying "We're supportive of the position of the Liberal government concerning the situation [in Nordania]."

The Whigs were opposed, with former President Breuvi Shjoraski stating that "Svensson no longer seems willing to exercise our country's status as the leader of the free world. The fact that she is trying to reduce Luziyca's influence on the global stage is concerning, especially when we shirk our responsibilities to serve as the guardian of the world."

Lovato I mission comes to a close
Image
The Brouvayeshki module before the placement of the Nucleo module, 2015

STAGNO, LOMBARDIA - Today, exactly 365 days since the Lovato I mission began, the aquanauts have completed their mission and ascended up from the Lovato habitat to the surface of the Gulf of Arazei. The participants which came from ten different countries were taken up by submersible from the habitat to the surface, where they were picked up by waiting boats.

Once the last person of the Lovato I mission, Birger Ohly, stepped out onto the boat, the boat was transported back towards Stagno, where they were greeted by President Sera Svensson and Lombardian Chief Executive Arcibaldo Mattiace, before Svensson gave a speech.

"You twenty-one souls," Sera Svensson said in Lombardian, "you have made great contributions to science. You have given not just Luziyca, but the whole world, a sense of knowledge. You have tested the possibility of not just living under the sea for a lengthy period of time, but your knowledge will greatly benefit those who one day will set up colonies on Mars."

"To live in such a remote environment," she said, "it is very remarkable. Therefore, on behalf of the Christian Republic, I would like to congratulate you on contributing so much to science."

The scientific impact
Karin Ohly, who came from Inleda and participated in the mission said that "the data that we have generated over the course of the mission will probably provide researchers with at least fifty papers regarding the feasibility of living in remote environments, such as under the sea, or in outer space." She said that "Of course, the results will need to be replicated, but it is very impressive."

Pavon participant Miranda Merkud stated that "This is a rare opportunity for us to not just study group dynamics, but also observe the marine environment in ways that we could never have dreamed of," adding that "scuba dives only give us a snapshot of the grandeur that is below the surface. But over the course of the mission, it was a delight to wake up and see the marine life."

But not all data has been collected: Zakaria al-Abrash, the first person to ever be born underwater, and who was in healthy condition while on the Lovato, will be studied to determine if being born under the sea would cause health problems due to being raised under ambient pressure. But so far, according to a local doctor, "he [Zakaria] is doing quite well."

The future
The next mission, Lovato III, was initially planned to occur after Lovato I had concluded, but due to funding constraints by the University of Yerevan, in addition to a refocus of the aims of the mission to have both a larger crew (of forty people), and a longer period (five years rather than one year), it will take place after Lovato II comes to an end in February of next year, and will last until 2022.

Currently, the twenty people of Lovato II will continue their mission, and many inhabitants have expressed a sense of loss, but hopes to "help continue to provide the world with opportunities to learn about life underneath the sea."

To tide the time between the end of Lovato I and the start of Lovato III, it was decided by the University of Yerevan that the Brouvayeshki module will function as an underwater hotel, with an overnight stay in the underwater hotel costing ₤337.50 ($675) per person. The intention of this is to help provide the university with additional funding to keep the Lovato operational, especially over the next five years, and to give tourists a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay underwater, just like the aquanauts.
