Ah.

After researching both parties (on Wikipedia, but, hey, I need to find things out quickly) I have discovered that neither party seems all that bad, other than the nationalism thing.

Why, exactly, is nationalism in and of itself bad?

It divides people over something which is pointless, it caused the huge death toll of WWI, and it caused fascism to become popular in the post-WWI world. Plus, it assumes that one person's nation is superior to another's.

Why should it matter if someone is French or German or American or British? Why create policies that put another nation down? All you're really doing is putting other people down.

We shouldn't be bickering over imaginary borders enforced by guns and imaginary loyalties enforced by mass agreement. We should be working together to provide freedom and prosperity for all people.

**shrug**

I think national pride and patriotism are extremely useful tools for creating a national economy which is competitive in the global marketplace, especially if the economy is socialist in nature, as that naturally aims to reduce competition within the nation.

Perhaps I don't want to be 'freed from my English overlords' I am happy with the UK.

At leest that's better than salmond's ceilidh. they arenae, th' rabid type ay nationalist.

It might just be that I grew up speaking Gaelic, with both my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc being native Gaelic speakers that I detest English, both the language and its government. I really don't mean offense, but as someone who did grow up speaking Gaelic, I have heard stories from my parents, and grandparents, their parents (etc) about the racism against the Gaels by both the Lowland Scots and the English, and anyone in the UK can see the same views about the Highlanders and Gaels in particular are still espoused today, that have their origins from the Highland clearances. I have heard the term teuchter used more than once as an insult, not jokingly. Racism against the Gaels still exists today. While I don't think independence solves that, it is a step in the right direction seperating us from the reason why an ethno-linguistic group still sees racist thoughts to this day.
