Good ol' American Football, because I'll be daggone mad if some Europeans are going to discredit my wins with the great Longhorns. Think of the effect these people will have on my son Bobby!

Football is like Chess.
Soccer is like Checkers.

I prefer Chess.

AFL pitches are generally 150 metres long and 135 metres wide. Thats right. You can't out wank Australia.

I wasn't going to try to.

I actually hadn't gotten to see Aussie footy until I went to Australia last year. It's a very interesting game. I couldn't quite gather all the nuanced rules but I generally got the gist of how to play. The consistent scoring also keeps matches very interesting.

Yes, it is a great game to watch.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to watch a game that has a possibility of having NO GOALS SCORED OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF!

However, I do not mind American football and even watch the Super Bowl when it is shown on TV here. I might even go watch should another American Football match take place at Wembley.

You need nothing more for American Football, although the flavour of that variety is a little different, as you can do without the goalposts at all when done that way...

Australian Football has that possibility as well. It just doesn't ever happen.

Just because Soccer does not involve large numbers of scores doesn't mean it's unmatchable. I enjoy watching soccer. Not as much as Australian Rules, but I still find it enjoyable.

Yes, but the possibility of it happening in soccer is so much higher. I doubt that there has ever been a game (Under regular circumstances) of AFL that has had no goals scored.

It is down to personal preference, so none of the sports can actually 'win', I just like to state why I prefer AFL.

Hmm, let us see...

  • Economically: there is no contest: Football. American Football is dwarfed by the amount of money that goes around in Football.
  • Popularity: again no contest. Football is popular in almost every country on all continents. American Football is mostly popular in the USA.
  • Linguistically: Football. Voetbal. Fussball. It is a game where you play a ball with your foot most of the time. Again - something almost every country agrees on.
  • As a sport: Hmm. Tricky. American Football requires more strategy, but has too many breaks. A small win to AF.
  • Macho Man: Football. Really. American Football players wear armour. Footballers wear shorts and kick eachother into the hospital.

Who continues ?

American Football would be much better if it were invented in Britain rather than America.

It wouldn't stop every couple of minutes for an ad break. That's dreadfully tacky. Instead it would go on over several days, with regular breaks for tea and crumpets. It'd also for some reason automatically stop when it's raining, and Cliff Richard would come out and sing to entertain the crowd. The vast majority of matches would end in a draw, the most sportsmanlike result. To ensure health and safety we'd remove the armour too and make sure that any physical contact rather than a light tap with the index finger would result in a three match ban.

Now that's sport, right there.

I don't get the animosity just cause they happen to share a name. Names are funny things. Who knows why we call things what we do. So shrug.

Both are really fun sports. I like following American football a lot more. But that's me. It's like a very complex, very intense, very high stakes chess match played out on the field for 60 brutal minutes. Soccer meanwhile (sorry, I'm American), is a very physical, free-flowing contest. I prefer playing soccer much more, and it's easier to just pick up and play uninterrupted with a bunch of people. When I sit down in front of a TV though, it's American football all the way. I'd probably tune out for stretches of tens of minutes in a soccer game. Not really that way with football, which is a very structured story of drives and turnovers. It's a perfect balance of 'interesting statistics kept' vs 'freeform play', IMO.

Soccer for instance, at least to my knowledge, has a lot of more intangibles to a game. You don't look at a box score for instance and find out easily how a player did in that game: the sharp passes, well-taken positions, expert dribbling through defenders, etc...are they marked down on a scoresheet? I think you have to either be paying close attention or read a detailed account of the story to get that type of information. Baseball's on the other extreme, SO MUCH stoppage, and so dreadfully boring aside from the playoffs. On the other hand, more stats than I can bother trying to wrap my head around. Reading about people debating different players' HOF merits in baseball is always amusing.

Soccer obviously has more global reach, but sorry baseball, football is America's sport.

Now that's not being macho. That's football being ridiculously dangerous, and the old-timer jokers who keep complaining that the sport is being pussified don't realize the players these days are bigger, faster, and stronger, and their equipment harder and studier, resulting in collisions more dreadful than they could imagine. Concussions are a big deal, and the NFL is starting to realize this and address this...

The common misconception among Americans is that soccer is a girl's sport. Diving is probably more prevalent, but soccer is pretty macho in its own right...very physical.

Eliminate the first three because it has nothing to do with what sport is better. Then Macho Man is up for grabs- both produce their walking and unwalking wounded, and calling one or another more macho than the other is kinda...odd. As a sport, as said before, it is up to taste and preference.

Both.

I watched the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl, and I'll be rooting for the United States to win the World Cup final - which I'll watch, even if they don't.
