Real life you vs. internet you

Postby The Plutonian Empire » Wed Jun 24, 2009 6:42 pm

Is there any difference between your IRL personality and your internet forum / chatroom personality?

If so, what?

I'm generally a nice guy IRL, but on the interwebs, I can be quite a jerk. And an opinionated one at that.

I'm a little bit more of an asshole IRL than on nationstates. I'm nicer here.

Jejeje. I always start to think that every person on NS is there for my entertainment. I never really remember that they are actual humans! Nevertheless I don't think I'm too much of an asshole. I suppose IRL I don't think as much before I speak.

He talks about when a person says something really stupid, and your brain comes to a screeching halt. The human brain, when given an overly complex problem, will start trying to work it out. You'll think you're driving to work, but you're not. You're thinking "How could he be more of an asshole in real life?" and you think you're having dinner with your family but you're not, you're thinking "What else could he do to make himself more of an asshole?" All day and all night, that's all you think about, until at the end of the week they find you dead your bathroom.

EDIT: These nested quotes are killing me.

I don't think I'm particularly different, except for generally being somewhat more shy and quiet in person.

I am a far nicer person on the internet then I am in person. If I heard half the comments made on these forums in person I would probably throw some punches and say rather choice words. However, in the written medium I have time to control my anger and self-censor for the administration's sake.

My real life self is very different from my online persona. IRL, I'm a brooding, moody, cynical loner who is extremely pessimistic and has no friends, whereas here I'm...

I'm afraid what you see is what you get, though in writing, I at least have the option to think before hitting 'post', or reviewing writing for rp (yes, yes, I know, boo, hiss) to say more of what I need or intend. Yes, I do role-play. But when its just me talking as me, and not in an rp environment as a character, ain't no difference type or talk. Never did see the point - not looking for anything but some interaction with fellow sentients, or close approximations thereof. ;)
