Need help looking for a good, wool tie.

Postby The Parkus Empire » Fri Mar 05, 2010 5:39 am

All my ties are silk, and I've decided to try a wool tie. I like wide ties. Any suggestions?

So far I'm liking this, though I'd prefer something a bit wider:

http://www.bluefly.com/Gucci-black-stri ... detail.fly

What's the opinion on it? What other wool ties can NSG recommend?

A wool tie sounds quite Dark Ages, when silk was this mythical stuff found in mysterious eastern lands.

It's not entirely unattractive, but it's not worth $200, either.

Get one of those, and truly you would be the belle of the ball.

The cheaper ones run about $75. But I don't mind spending a lot of money on a piece of clothing I love. Not on jeans, or anything, but as far as dress goes, my pocket-book isn't bashful.

I already have numerous colorful, dated ties (most of my collection was made no later than the 1950's), but I doubt I'd like something as loud as a Kipper, unless I wanted to be a super-villain. Plus, I'm not trying to be a "belle".

I don't really like the G at all, but I'm willing to look past it, mainly because it probably wouldn't be noticed in everyday interactions.

thats what i like about it. for your $150 you get a tie that IS designer but doesnt scream it out.

there really isnt any way to judge a tie without seeing it in context.

One reason I'm thinking about just getting a custom tie.

you must live in the big city! ive never heard of a custom tie maker.

you must also be very confident of your good taste. (i do envy people with excellent taste) the reason people go with designer stuff is so that if it turns out badly they can always fall back on "its gucci" as a defense.

I live close enough to LA to take the trip for a good tie, and most dedicated custom tailors will make just about anything.

You can easily order one online, but I prefer to see how the tie would look on me before I commission it.

I'd like to think I have taste, though I generally get female opinions on anything before I have it done, clothing wise.

To be quite honest, wool ties look just dreadful. Unless you are trying to look like a Jonas brother, stick with the silk.

There are no good wool ties.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

While you're entitled to your opinion, Parth (and I'm still wearing silk most of the time), I'm gonna try what women recommend to me.

The women you are dealing with have no taste. That being said, at least go with a respectable brand...

I really like that first one, Parth, too bad it isn't wider. I might get it, anyway, though.

I can't imagine a setting or climate condition that would make that tie look appropriate. After examining the color, texture, and pattern, I'd have to say that if the conditions are right for that tie, the man should just wear a sweater.

I'm probably going to just get a solid black one.
