They're mostly pretty miserable, though. I haven't met one teacher that has said "I got my bills all paid, and I'm taking my vacation days this week!" Actually, I have only seen one or two teachers who sincerely SMILE

You're only miserable because you choose to be, and you teachers usually aren't that poor. When I interned with Ohio's AOS Performance Audit, I usually found that teachers were making substantially more than the community average before benefits (usually about 25%).

And Ohio's school funding situation is totally jacked. The Supreme Court has found it to be unconstitutional at least four times.

Intriguing saga, kin. I don't live in Ohio, I don't know anything about Ohio, I don't know any of the parameters of your "finding", especially whether the "community average" was a suitable living wage. I don't care what the Supreme Court thinks of Ohio's education funding. As for the miserable bit, I suppose you're right: I'd be quite a bit less stressed and harrowed if I could convince myself to care less and do less. Unfortunately, I can't.

I don't know that many people who smile when they're working.

You probably shouldn't bring up vacation days when comparing teaching to other professions either, if you want to take the teacher's side.

I am glad I go to a public school where Religion is a no-no to teach. Because if I was in a Religion class, there would be daily arguments.

That seems wrong, nothing should be a no-no to teach, my World Religions elective class was very unbiased, despite the entire class being either atheist, deist or Christian, we had a lot of debates, but debates are a great form of education.
World Religions should a required course in school, from personal experience I can say it makes people much more accepting of each other's beliefs. And their are too many misconceptions about it all.

That depends entirely on what she meant by "tallest", how well she communicated that, and how much of a smart ass you were.

While the various incidents are too numerous to list, I could make my high school history teacher visibly flinch by raising my hand. I did kind of feel sorry for the guy since the class was full of idiots who had had trouble reading the textbook, much less listening to anything that wasn't about sports, but hopefully I helped his next class out a bit. Various examples include spelling Afghanistan with a 'ph', the airplane being invented in 1914, and the locomotive being invented in the US.

That is stupid. Teachers should be encouraging you to find things like that. It shows you are interested in learning and finding data. Of course it is also not totally the teachers fault as rigid state enforced curriculum and guidelines make it almost impossible for them to properly teach.

The school does have a hierarchy, whether you can see it or not, and whether you take active part in it or not. Personally, I did, and I hate that I did, but still ... I did. There's a hierarchy based on everyone slamming their boot down on the people below them, except for the people at the very top who are usually really great people (in my experience, and based on stories) because they have no reason to step on other people (anymore, at least).
