Would you summon a Demon?

Postby Infected Mushroom » Mon Jul 13, 2015 2:24 pm

You have a very very clear dream in which you pick up an ancient-looking purple book, turn to page 666, read the words on that page in a clear voice, and then drop the book into a large bonfire.

You are aware in the dream that this will summon a Demon.

Before you see what happens next, you wake up.

The next morning, you are having coffee when the mail man drops a package by the door. You open up the package and to your shock, you find the ancient purple book (it looks exactly as it does in your dream).

You decide to do some research. You go to your local library and read up everything you can find on the shelves and on the web on demons, incantations, demonic pacts, even some literature on the subject etc.

You draw your own conclusion based on this research.

You go home and you find the book waiting.

What do you do with the book?

Do you destroy it? Do you use it to summon a demon (and if so... why? Do you do it out of intellectual curiosity? Out of the hope that you can make a pact that can benefit you? Or for some other purpose?).

What do you do?

I think ultimately I would have to try it out and summon the demon. Otherwise, my curiosity will never let me sleep.

Turn it over to the church or the government, possibly. Arrange for a controlled experiment. This represents the chance to prove the existence of the supernatural, but also the potential to destroy all of humanity.

May be could try it out on the Moon.

That said, it would depend on what's likely to happen.

Also, am I the only one who instantly recognized this as a Kefka thread from the title?

Pretty sure we're going off the assumption that demons exist for this question. Saying "lol they aint real" isn't adding too much, dontcha think?

No, I wouldn't summon one. Things be crazy evil, after all.

^^Actually you can because science is a thing but that's another topic altogether.
vv "Would" and "Could" are not the same thing.

I'm quite certain that I would not summon something that doesn't exist.

I'd been hoping to introduce that one.

No, I would not. Apart from the ethical problems inherent in it(both sorcery being immoral and the whole slavery thing), it's also incredibly dangerous. Demons are considered incredibly powerful in many traditions; I have to assume a worst case scenario. And if I lose control of it(which I probably would, not being good at controlling demons), it would probably kill me. And likely other people too.

Anyway, if it was an actual demon from something akin to hell, I wouldn't, partly due to the fact I would at that point know relatively little of magic and using magic in a safe manner. And the whole weird dream, the book arriving, "waiting" for me, etc. It's just... creepy. It's book burnin' time, boys...

Why wouldn't you?
The question is "would" after all. There is a very obvious implication of "If it were possible" here.
And the OP's scenerio, which you are being asking to go along with, seems to heavily assert they exist.

Infected Mushroom wrote:

Yes you can, though. Science. No evidence supports them.

Edit: in short, no, that's a bad argument. They don't exist.

If I got one, someone else probably did. I'm sure the Feds will be interested after the first one goes public because some idiot made a wish that went terribly, horribly wrong.

Also, if the book itself is clearly anomalous in some way, it would be a quick ride up the hierarchy until it ends up in Nevada for testing.

Either way, the fact of the matter is that I'm not equipped to handle the possibility that this thing escapes and goes on a rampage, possesses the nearest person, or does any number of things that a physical creature can't do. Since it's allowed to break the laws of reality, there is no upper limit to the amount of damage it could do. Since it's inhuman, there's no reason it can't be superintelligent and, with just access to my two ears, arrange for the destruction of human civilization. You might as well ask what I'd do if I came into the possession of a hydrogen bomb.

If, for some reason, I can't convince anyone to take it more seriously, I do have enough connections to smother it in concrete and drop it into the ocean.
