Who's your favourite god or goddess?

Postby Jamie Anumia » Thu Nov 29, 2012 3:41 am

I always found Aphrodite or Athena the most interesting, so I'd say them.

Oh I thought it was spirits or something intangible. Yeah I have no idea about Icelandic lol

Yes, ok, English fails for having the right word here, or words, really. It's spirits/sprites/elves/fairies or whatever the dictionary you happened to be using has for it. "Supernatural beings that lived there first and will be really pissed off if you build over their homes without appeasing them with proper rituals first" should work as a proper translation.

Nordic "supernaturals" are really difficult to translate into English, where most of the vocabulary is connected to the ones from Celtic tradition.

Athena's a nice girl, funny, smart and just ever so slightly clueless. I mean, armor's fine now and then but not all the time. Aphrodite is sexy as hell, of course, but I don't know, I always found her a little full of herself. I suppose that's not unexpected.

I like that Loki is basically a big troll who occasionally goes a little too far. He tricks the blind Höder into killing his brother Balder, then dresses up as a female giant and refuses to cry so that Balder won't be resurrected. Later he shows up at a gathering of the gods and insults everyone present. And he pretty much does all this for the lulz.

But if I have to choose my favourite god? Sorry, I can't decide. There are too many that I like.

I like all gods/goddesses with the exceptions of Zeus(Greek) because he is a pompous butt-hole. Loki(Norse) because he is childish. Coyote(Native American) because he seems to trick everyone. the Morrigan (Celtic/Gaelic)and Maeb/Maeve(Celtic/Gaelic) because they are too wicked. Ba'al(Babylonian) because he is a dick, Addramelech/Adramelek for his human sacrifices. Cernunnos for the sacrifices to, Angra Mainyu/Ahriman(Persian/Zoroastrian) because he corrupts everything, Ares(Greek) and goddess Kali(Hindu) for being murderers. Lilith is just terrible. Set is truly evil. Lastly Enlil(Mesopotamian) tried to destroy humans for being to numerous by using a flood!

I think what attracts me about Innana has always been that she is one of the most prominent Mesopotamian goddesses. Not to mention that her priestesses were quite revered.

I blame that notion on many of her followers than of the goddess herself. Perhaps the whole deal with the sacred prostitution practiced in her temples along the Nile had something to do with the way Innana is perceived at times.
